This thread is for developing ideas for the organisation of this Raw Communities network.
Some questions to ask yourself...
How do we best go about creating and living in raw communities for each other?
How can vibrant and on-going inter-relations between the different raw communities be achieved?
What issues of importance can we put our hands together to accomplish?
(...and will raw foods save the world? ; )

www.rawcommunities.com website ideas
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 4:50 AMi've been having an email discussion with Rob recently about the possibilites for the www.rawcommunities.com website. i am opening and continuing the discussion under this topic for involvement and participation with all!
The emails start after sending Rob an invite to the forum...
Rob says >
Thanks, that's a great idea. I'll put a link up from the
RawCommunities.com website.
I have thought about putting a forum on the Rawcommunities site and I just want to say that is still an option to keep everything together.
If it works being on tribes.net then great, it does look like and
interesting place with lots of raw connections. But if it doesn't get
many people joining, we could try moving it to RawCommunities.com

thanks for emailing, and i'd really appreciate a link on your cool site!
halfway through sending out the invites to everyone today i saw that we shared the same "Raw Communities" title. so i then considered changing mine to "Raw Communities Collective" or something different anyway so as not to disturb your rightful claim to the name! i can always change it later if you want. But now that you mention the possibilty of moving the forum to your website in the future, well it might be a good sign of coincidence!
Perhaps as you say we can wait and see how things go with tribe.net first. One thing tribe.net has going for it is connectivity and exposure, here the raw community forum becomes a 'network within a network' of interest groups and individuals. it is might prove easy in amongst this diverse cyber-environ to deepen online relations with each other within tribe.net and become involved with each other's various interests outside of the "rawfood communities" setting. Something like this happening would assist the formation of strong and layered community relations important for living communities.
Do you have other ideas for your website you'd like to work on? There are many things that i know i would really like to do that the tribe.net forum won't do. Perhaps rawcommunities.com could leave off from develping forums, and instead provide those things that can't be otherwise done with the tribe.net forum. If you are interested we can discuss the thought further and work together in symbiosis.

Don't worry about the name, I'm not into trade marks or copyright kind of stuff! When we first opened rawcommunities.com someone else opened rawcommunity.com which I think had chat/forums but it doesn't seem to be around anymore.
We (Steve Charter actually owns the domain name and it is a joint
project but I seem to have taken over although Steve still pays the
domain reg) did (and maybe still do) have lots of plans for
rawcommunities.com but they seem to have gone by the wayside. It always happens when there is a distinct lack of interest in a site I put up, I sought of give up a bit. I mean, I've not even implemented the search or edit functions. I promise to do them soon.
I have started to put raw news up there, particularly UK stuff as it
seems to be a bit under-represented with all the US stuff going on.
More recently I've been working on www.funkyraw.com and a related print magazine which seem to be having a good success and a lot of hits to the website. I suppose in some ways this has taken over in that I was going to put some kind of "people connections" type of thing up on rawcommunities but now funkyaw.com has a personals section and a forum
Ok, I think that's enough rambling from me, but if you have any ideas I
would love to hear them, I'm definatly up for working together on stuff
- might motivate me a bit more.

one important initial aspect in getting communities to work might be in conducting online surveys/questionaires/polls.
the gathering of information and feedback commentary from raw people out there can be quite useful towards assisting community understanding and developments. all sorts of basic questions can be asked for starters about the spectrum of who's out there, what are their interests, what would they like to have in a community, how serious they are about community living, what are their concerns. data can be both collected and reported in such a way that respects individual privacy, yet allows greater comprehension of groups as a whole. a generic survey may also be applied to a community to find out people's attractions and aversions to it. Such a collection and sharing of opinions amongst the raw community may be the start for stimulating a real understanding of what issues need to be addressed both specifically and as a whole.
Steve Charter from Eco-forest? i really like what the Eco-forest organisation is trying to do. it's a shame that their community, like alot of other communites, currently lacks in numbers of dedicated long-term members. This is one issue that hopefully we will be able to dissolve through the raw communities forum and its related activities.
Rob, funkyraw.com is a very nice website, and i like catchy thematics of the colourful little hippy-flowers all through it! i've read a little bit from books about designing websites but havent actually sat down and built one yet. Perhaps if you think some of the ideas we discuss motivate you enough, then we could hear your ideas for rawcommunities.com's overall design, if it comes to that, as well -

Re: www.rawcommunities.com website ideas
Tue, June 21, 2005 - 7:30 AMSome good ideas there Rachan.
Do you know Steve Charter/have you been to Ecoforest? I lived there for a year (www.ecoforest.org) and it was amazing but also had it's issues. Not enough people wanted to live there and for me it was just too quiet. Also a personality clash... I really don't think any kind of online stuff would help in this kind of case, what's needed is good communication between the people who live there.
The stuff you suggest could definatly help in setting up a community...
The reason www.rawcommunities.com has a very basic design was that I was planning to translate it into multiple languages and allow users to help build these translations. I've just had so much other stuff to do and also stopped enjoying doing computer work so much and just prefer to be outside in the garden or out hiking somewhere! I do plan to at least make the site work in Spanish at some point.

Re: www.rawcommunities.com website ideas
Thu, June 23, 2005 - 2:49 AMNo, i don't actually know Steve, i'm a relative newbie to raw, i've not been out or met alot of raw people. Perhaps there's another thing that the website could assist with later on... helping to people plan their travels so they can meet/travel with other rawfoodies.
Maybe there could evetually be a semi-organised tour or listing of events, not so much to encourage people to hop on a plane, i'm not into burning lots of fossil fuels, but it would be good to make the most of it if one does decide to travel.
A multi-language site sounds very cool, Rob, i hadnt thought of that. Also, bridging some of the different world languages from early on might also be quite relevant to conducting of surveys. Allowing users not just translate material but also to help with ongoing building and development of the website could be good too. If more people were involved and helping you out it might make things easier and free up your time for other things.
Perhaps a resource for reviewing the different approaches to community government and conflict resolution processes could be very helpful to have on website. There is potentially alot to say on this topic so i might just leave it at that and start a new thread on it later.
"Not enough people wanted to live there and for me it was just too quiet."
- this is one of my hesitations to jumping into a raw community. i am hoping that if more people were to connect online through some of these discussions, then we might be able to begin to make a more concerted approach in this regards. -

Re: www.rawcommunities.com website ideas
Thu, June 30, 2005 - 10:22 AMWhile I just love the idea of Ecoforest, it seems to me that a more sustainable way to encourage "raw behavior" is to help people intigrate raw eating into their already existing framework, rather than suggesting eating raw food exclusively is for people willing to leave their lives behind and move to a hopeful utopia.
It seems that while some people would be happy living in an Ecoforest-type place, for many of us, it would be a wondrous place to visit, to meet like-minded people and learn about raw living, and as Rachan mentioned, a destination or part of a larger trip for people looking for this sort of thing...and saving the world :D

Thu, July 28, 2005 - 8:27 PMHello folks,
I just found this blog and want to say hello. I live in Arizona and my wife and I are about 85% raw food diet.
We are also activists for saving our vitamin freedoms.
What countries are you all in?

who we are
Sat, July 30, 2005 - 4:35 AMhi Edward, welcome : )
click on each person here to see where we are all from and more...!
admittedly it would be nice to have a world-map showing a distribution of rawfoodists across the globe. perhaps that could be included on the rawcommunities.com website (...at least, for members of rawcommunities.com).
info on locations could just be for starters... membership-forms and small surveys and polls can collect various basic info and feedback and the results and figures displayed onsite.
to begin with, this sort of general info might be useful in giving a sense of who we are and where each one of us fits in, and so that we can start to "see" ourselves more clearly as a whole. later on it can be specifically targeted towards helping find our common interests and directions. -

Re: who we are
Wed, August 24, 2005 - 4:51 AMI really like the idea of a map showing where the raw communities are around the world, but really don't have time to implement anything like this at the moment.... if anyone could do this or knows of an easy way how then please let me know!

Re: who we are
Wed, September 21, 2005 - 6:52 PMI really like the idea of helping rawies travel to meet others rawies in raw ecocommunities. While we need to get together as a culture/ community, we could teach about raw or preparation, so people can integrate this into their already mainstream lifestyle. Or at least thats my job for the present (raw vegan personal chef). Great idea though, Ill keep checking in with you guys hopefull we can work something out. I would love to help with the comp stuff, but I know very little about computers.

Re: who we are
Wed, November 9, 2005 - 9:46 PMhi,
some other websites i found through google while considering the mapping of raw communities...
mbbnet.umn.edu/scmap.html
and
www.insc.anl.gov/pwrmaps/m...ld_map.php
Above links are two examples of webpages with world map represention of spread info.
The first link's page has big brown dots that are linked to other pages. There could be something similar to represent the various raw communities on the map.
The second link's page also allows you to click on different regions for close-ups on the map.
not sure of the best place to get free maps but this looks like a good start...
alabamamaps.ua.edu/about.html
where it says the contemporary maps:
"may be used free of charge by anyone for any purpose. Our only caveats are that we be cited as the map's source and that the map not be modified in any way."
By 'modified', i think that just means not changing the boundaries of the countries for example, you'd still be free to write your own text on it and change it's format. So this free map looks pretty good to me...
alabamamaps.ua.edu/contempo...rld3c.pdf
rob, i would be happy to help you with the mapping, such as photoshop help for example if needed.
sounds like you'd just like to do one for raw communities, but i would be interested to do one for raw individuals as well so i might work on that. might be good if the same source-map were applied to both.

Re: who we are
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 4:32 AM(It's been a while...sorry I've been so busy with other things.)
These last few days I really really really felt like knowing of other people interested in raw community in Thailand or Australia. This has now finally made me realise what can really really really help make the raw communities website much more effective, and it's so simple and obvious...
We need people to step into the circle and see each other.
We have a raw communities directory, but especially seeing as we have so few communities, we also need a 'people-who-are-interested-in-raw-communities' directory. A brief personal profile with such "fill in the blank" details as preferred locations, whether they are interested in short-term or long-term stay, when they would be interested in joining/creating a community, preferred community policies... Profile search functions can then be created around this collective information to help find matches and so everyone knows about each other.
I guess initially I thought the profiles on Tribe.net might be enough. Now I think it would be much better to have specific profiles as stated above on rawcommunities.com with links to profiles here or elsewhere if desired. (Eventually even this forum will probably shift there too.)
I really believe in this. What do other people think?
(Rob, was this what you meant by, "I was going to putsome kind of 'people connections' type of thing up on rawcommunities", you mentioned before?)
