I was told in the dogzone tribe to check out this tribe for puppy homemade food. I search but could not find much.
I have a 6 week old labrador and I presently feed hime royal canin. Is it a good a idea to him raw food before he gets
all his shots and builds up his immunity.
I would love to learn more about this... any insights?!?!

Re: puppy food raw food diet?
Mon, July 9, 2007 - 4:15 PMThere are no vaccines made to deal with food borne disease, so he's not at anymore risk than an adult dog. Don't worry about salmonella because dogs have the ability to shed it in their feces. Dogs and puppies can eat all sorts of nasty things with no problems, like when they bury a bone, just to dig up weeks later to gnaw on. Just make sure to do the switch slowly so they can get acclimated to the change. Also, bone and organ content can play a HUGE role in stool consistancy. So if your puppy gets diarrhea from the raw diet, it's most likely not that he's sick, but rather he's getting too much organ meat or not enough bone. Too much bone will make him constipated (stools will also be chalky looking), so it's a bit of a juggling act.
Also, vomiting when first starting the diet is common. I remember when wer first started Squeek on the diet I completely FREAKED out when she vomited up a piece of bone. I came to find out that this is normal. Her stomach was just ejecting an irritating object rather than trying to pass it. I also learned that you should make sure that the pieces of meat with bone should be large enough that the dog actually has to crunch it up before swallowing. Chicken quarters work well for my two dogs which weigh about 50lbs each. The quarters are too big for them to gulp, so they have to chew. Some people with larger dogs, give them whole chickens to munch on, and then when they've eaten a certain amount of the carcass they take it away from them to serve for another day. Which gets me to my next point. ALWAYS supervise meal times. Another trick to get them not to gulp their food is to hold onto the piece of meat while they crunch it.
Check out the Yahoo Group "Raw Feeding" for lots more info on feeding puppies raw food. -

Re: puppy food raw food diet?
Sun, July 15, 2007 - 9:47 AMFor a while, our dogs would throw up the ends of chicken legs that didn't get digested, but not any more. Ever once in a while, someone will throw up a whole stomach full of food to be promptly re-eaten. We just look the other way! They did that with kibble, too, though.
Ms. Purity is spot on with everything. You get used to watching their stools and adjusting, but for the most part, we try to give something like chicken quarters which have a good balance of meat and bone, with occasional organ meat. We try to mix it up for variety, but you can't beat chicken for availability and cost.
You should adjust slowly, but that's the same with all foods.
