I am not reading anything now. I cant decide so I figure lets have a vote. I will give 5 books I am thinking about and you all chime in and the one with the most thumbs ups is what I read next
the choices are "classics" and a few i hear rather heavy
Homer's The Iliad
Virgil's The Aeneid
Sophacles' Eedipus the King
The Arabian Knights
Jane Austen's Mansfield Park (I have never read Austen and never watched any of the movies based on her books. But I did catch about 20 minutes of the end of Mansfield Park a few nights ago and I was intrigued to finally read something, well maybe read something by her)

Re: What are you reading these days? Part II
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 2:19 PMbro,
make a new list. life's too short. if you want to read a 600 page book i highly recommend The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by Murikami. weird and wonderful.
your list reminds me of the guy who went to the greek tailor with a rent in his garment.
tailor: euripides?
guy: yeah. eumenides? -

Mon, May 12, 2008 - 2:35 PM<<with a rent in his>>
Is rent a euphimism?
I actually want to read some of these books. And I own them so it seems I should give it the old college try. Of course with the college try that means I need to include a BIG drink too. -

Re: What are you reading these days? Part II
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 10:42 PMI think given the choices I'd opt for the Iliad. It's especially interesting if you consider it may have only been first written down by the Greeks, not necessarily a Greek tale originally, as Imus Jacob Wilkens argues. Homer's descriptions in no way resemble the traditional site of Hissarlik, so I think Wilkens may be on to something.
Now if you had Aristophanes on your list I'd have opted for his comedies, as they seem quite modern in many respects, spiritually akin to Theatre of the Absurd. -

Wed, May 14, 2008 - 6:44 PMI agree - the Iliad. On the other hand, the Arabian Nights is sort of out of the box ... -

Re: What are you reading these days? Part II
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 1:32 AMThe Arabian Knights (it's a good read....if you have a good memory, other wise it's just confusing.) or The Iliad (good book but a sad book) -

Re: What are you reading these days? Part II
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 2:01 AMI have Dhalgren. I started it but got side tracked. I do need to go back to that. -

Re: What are you reading these days? Part II
Mon, May 19, 2008 - 5:48 PMIlliad is interesting but monotonous and redundant. I havent read the 50,0000000 page arabian nights but most abbridged versions just give you teh tasty stuff. probly a quickie. another quick read is oedipus - you could read that in like an hour or two.
i havent read jane austin either. what was the other one? whatever.
