Call to the community of Kailua- Kona for design concept of a new sculpture to be built along HWY #101 on the grounds of NELHA.

An organization called Art Across America will be working with local artists and community members to build a 20 ft tall sculpture, which intends to be based on the design of a vertical wind turbine. The sculpture will be built from reclaimed materials from the big island. We are asking for suggestions of simple ideas and concepts of what the sculpture may look like and/or represent. The sculpture is to be built during the month of July.

Input from you is appreciated to represent what you wish to see on the side of the highway.

If we have ANY hope of burning the phoenix at Rebirth 2008 we NEED the
community to come together RIGHT NOW to make Mayor Harry Kim change
his mind and grant us a burn exemtion. They are telling us that we can
NOT burn the phoenix based on an emergency proclamation banning all
outdoor fires. The Mayor can give us an exemtion but will not give us
the time of day as we are nobodys.

We NEED you the community to send in a mass of emails (please
personalize to your liking but hit on the same points) to help them
understand just how much the community is invested in the burning of
the phoenix.

Tickets to Rebirth 2008 (May 15-18th)
Get your now while you still can!

Online
Ticket are still for sale online via the www.kapilina.org website until 12:01 AM Monday 5/12. All ticket bought online at this point will be held at Will Call. The online $40 tickets are almost sold out, there are a handful left.

Outlets
Ticket outlets on Oahu, Kauai, and Kona have stopped selling tickets as of Friday 5/9. Maui outlets will stop selling tickets by Saturday 5/10 and tickets on the Big Island are still on sale at CD wizard in Hilo until Tuesday 5/13. The $40 tickets for sale on the Big Island are going strong and are mostly gone.

At the Gate
Tickets will be for sale at the Gate when it opens on 5/15 at 8 AM until Saturday 5/17 at 9 PM. If there are any $40 tickets left they will go quickly so expect a ticket at the Gate to be $50 or more. There are 200 tickets at each tier: $40, $50, $60, and $70.

Buy your ticket early and get in for less. This is shaping up to be the best Rebirth yet, help support the casue and buy your ticket today and we'll see you in the jungle.

ReBirth Hawaii Burning Man Regional in Two Weeks!!

Rebirth 2008, the Hawaii Interactive Arts Festival, will open the Gate to the public at
8AM Thursday May 15th. 2 weeks from now!

Registration has closed for themecamps (volunteer registration is still open), the
art grant cycle is closed, and the low income ticket application deadline has passed.
The $40 tickets online are almost gone and the rest of the $40 tickets are going fast
(they are sold locally only on the Big Island). Please help us fund the event by
buying a ticket early, and the earlier you buy it the cheaper it will be.
You can buy a ticket online at www.kapilina.org or in a number of outlets
on the 4 main islands, go to the website for all of the details.

Here is a sampling of the interactive art you can look forward to:

Art Grant Applicants submitted, to date, are as follows:
A local glass blower named John Cobb provides portable glass blowing studio
down to rebirth to create a sculpture inspired by the festival, people and environs.
Elizabeth Immel and local folk to paint 7 to 10 people in full body paint. This is an
interactive community process / project.
Local burner Rose (that's Ranger Rose!) is going to build a day glow / lit installation
of a Phoenix with propane and tube lights.
Local artist Samantha Black will provide a body & mural paint station with
edible paints made from pudding.
Local fire artist Jason Hester (Fuego Drago) is building a large lantern he'll ignite
with pele's fire, and then return to the shire with the lit lantern.
Transfire, the Big Island's local fire conclave, will provide Saturday night fire performance
before the ceremonial burn of the Phoenix.
Other non-grant-funded art to appear at Rebirth:
Local musician/artist (Reed Richard) is going to put on a few performance art pieces
- playing his own music, and in ritualistic costume. "Combining crystal grids,
merkaba activations, acoustic and electronic sounds (alto sax, bass clarinet,
vibraphone, enhanced with effects pedals and slight amplification...
voice moving meditation with plant-based apparrel."
Evaporating Heartbeat. "Free form improvised late night implosion of consciousness..."
performed by Reed Richard + others... (this might be Jerome's group?)
Local artists Hope & Luckey will present the "Solar Secrets Tipi". Small-size tipi
made of burn-able materials (dry bamboo), plastic and paper. Surrounded by
solar lights for night-time use, this tipi is intended as a temple to your secrets.
Scrawl your secrets inside, and [hopefully], they'll be burned sacrificially.
Local artists Hope & Luckey will present "Transformation" ... a three-part installation
of a catepillar, empty crysalis, and flying butterfly. Materials will consist of everything
we can possibly find.

The Absent Friends Shakespeare Group will be performing impromptu plays in
full costume, as a roving group, throughout the event.

Themecamps
Develyn's Anonymous Camp (To support AA; a safe place for sobriety with
daily meetings. Needs a quiet place behind the Shire.)
Media camp
The Sanctuary (We want to offer holistic healing to body, heart, and soul. Mellow,
refreshing, and peaceful. We will gift a transformational experience that includes
personalized herbal remedies, therapeutic art, music therapy, positive healing prayer,
and prophetic counseling. We also hope to create a kids tent for play time and child care
at select times. We are looking for large boxes for the kids to play in.)
Source Maui (This is aimed to be a cohesive Maui presence theme camp with pretty tents,
a BOP game, great food, some No Ka Oi.)
Natasha's SINsations & Jerry's House of Costumes (An exploration of sinfully delicious
feelings and experiences to meet all your sensual and costume needs)
Inflatuland
Shire Stage (The acoustic stage in Centercamp featuring bands)
Kids camp
CAMP No-na me'
Large scale sound camps (4)

I'd like to thank all the people who made last night's fundraiser at Bar 35 a success. Special thanks to Teresa, Geoff and Sean for working overtime to make it happen. Rebirth 08 Sound Czar needed

We are looking for someone to take a lead in sorting out the issues
around sound for Rebirth 2008. This would ideally be someone with a DJ
or sound tech background. Primary tasks would include:

- running a sound check to get an idea of how far sound does carry
from the site. We have sound equipment available, a sound meter, people
that can help, etc, but we need one mind to run it.

- experimenting with strategies for isolating bass speakers from the
ground to reduce sound propogation. Again, we have ideas and access to
materials, but not much time / interest in running these exercises.

- interfacing with the rest of the team so that during the event
itself there are clear guidelines for keeping the sound issues from
shutting the event down. There are others that would be responsible for
actual enforcement, but this person would help come up with the
strategies for determining if there's an issue before the cops do.

As stated above, we'd love to have a DJ or someone else intimately
familiar with / in love with large scale sound art. We have a fund
raiser occurring in a few weeks on the Big Island and any local DJs
taking this role would be assured a slot at this event as well.

Off-island would be great, as well, as long as you can be on site a few days before the event starts.

I was checking out the Transformus tribe (NC burn, my friend Uncle Jonah is from there) and there is this terrible controversy about how they did ticketing. http://transforma.tribe.net/thread/532d3899-f5d2-4b2e-8788-192064b00106 Basically they made everyone apply through the website, and after allocating tix for crucial staff then randomly (RANDOMLY!) allocated the rest. A bunch of themecamps got split up and apparently a lot of people requested a lot more than they needed. Yikes.

Anywho planning for Rebirth is coming along fine, and we have a couple of fundraiser parties planned for Big Island (in April), and Oahu (March 22, this Saturday). Don't forget to submit your theme camp applications as soon as possible! The sooner we know how many and how big the sooner we can get to finding some nice real estate to stick em on.

hawaii islands burningman fire conclave update

aloha my fiery friends !!! well well, the time has come once again to come together as a family here; in the wonderful hawaiin island chain . getting into the burningman fire conclave is no easy task . with the growing number of fire artists springing up each year, the requirements to be excepted into the great circle are tighter then ever . for the last two years, i have been accepted into the circle being involved with the wonderful troupe " illumination" , which i regret to inform, will not be submitting an audition video this year to crimson rose ( burningman ). things have changed here as they always do. people change, people grow, and it is time for new seeds to be planted. i want nothing more than to feel the honor and accomplishment of being involved with the biggest fire show on earth . in order to do that; alot of work and dedication is needed . this letter is a calling out to every fire artist ,fire safety, drummers and photo/cinematographers who are dedicated to bringing our beautifull fire art back into the great circle this year . "illumination" my be gone for now, but the wonderfull people that made that group, are mostly still here . the main point of this letter is to inform everyone that we can still be in the circle if we pull together and work hard as we have always done before . anyone out there interested in making this happen with me, please contact me asap! either through this tribe , saftey3rd tribe, my email (hippy420@excite.com) or by phone: (808) 778-1246 . i believe that by march 1st, all of the names of people trying out for the conclave need to be submitted . i am going to be spending the next month contacting as many of you as possible myself, but i dont have everyones names/numbers/email addresses . remember, we have to impress the higher ups of burningman to accept us with an impressive audition video. either way, i love you all, and have faith in every single one of us that we will give this our best efforts and have fun growing closer as we build our new conclave !!! much respect to you all !!! i will be posting alot of updates and info this month, please be looking!

Rebirth tickets on sale 1/25!

Tickets to Rebirth 2008 are going on sale on January 25th!

Online ticket sales will begin at 8 AM on Friday January 25th on the Ka Pilina website (www.kapilina.org). There will be a total of 50 tickets available online in the first tier ($40), and 100 available in each succeeding tier ($50, $60, and $70).

We will have tickets available at outlets on each island starting in early February, check this site for full details when they are available. Big Island outlets will have a total of 50 of the first tier of tickets ($40) while neighbor island outlets will start by selling second tier tickets ($50).

When our online registration system is up and running we will also have available a limited number of discount tickets for Volunteers ($30), low-income ($30), and performers ($40). Check back with this site for the full details when they are available.

The Ka Pilina camp @ Burning Man is BACK!

Going to Burning Man 2007? Want to camp with a bunch of other Hawaii burners at the Hawaii Regional Embassy on the playa?

Now is your chance! The Ka Pilina camp will be making it's 4th consecutive appearance on the playa. It looked like we were not going to make it this year but a few dedicated local burners would not let that happen. We are not going to be a village and the camp is downsized a bit from previous years as we are trying to take a different approach this year.

We will be relying on campers to be self-reliant, meaning there will be next to nothing that the camp will provide (mainly organizing the space and putting up flags). Each camper is expected to not only come prepared (your OWN shade, food, water, showers, evaporation ponds, etc.) but also to carry away all the garbage in the camp whether it is yours or not.

The camp
We are going for a lot 200' x 200' and we are going to cap it at 125-150 people. Mike Maung is returning with his mega-art with Lawnmower II, a 25' tall sculpture lit up with EL wire. We will have 3 "mini-themecamps" within our themecamps this year: Han's Hippie Fishing Bait and Tackle, the Hawaiian Awa Hut, and Inflatuland. We hope to be on a corner again with Mike's sculpture near the point. The 3 mini-themecamps will be across an open area (for any fire performance and the luau) in an arc facing the sculpture. The most interactive elements will get the most frontage with more private camping towards the rear. We will most likely be back from the playa as in years' past but that means we are also more likely to by near but not too close to the portapotties.

We decided that after being a "soup kitchen for stoners" (like 750-1000 of them) we are going to go back to the roots of the luau which is more like a "stone soup" type of thing. We are asking for everyone who wishes to participate in the luau to bring something to share as in food and/or beverages. We want to get back to the luau being a place and time for local Hawaii burners to meet each other in a relaxing and friendly environment. We never intended the luau to be just a "big party" we throw for all Black Rock City. Everyone is welcome to attend, but we just want to be clear what the luau is about, participants contributing and people (especially kama'aina) connecting.

What a great event

Wow, Rebirth was fantastic. I can't believe how much we grew this year. From around 300 last year to over 600 this year; that's amazing. And all the art, sound camps, and activities made this one of the most memorable events these islands have ever seen.

None of this would have been possible without the dedication and hard work of many different people and I would like to thank all of them for their time and effort in making this event happen. And of course we wouldn't have had such a great time if everyone else didn't come down and participate so I would like to thank everyone for spending their time with us this weekend.

in need of ride/travel buddy...

Hello,
I am really interested in going to Rebirth, however, I am a student at UH and I play in the symphonic wind ensemble. Our last concert is April 30th and we have rehersal unil 3:30 on friday. The music department pays half my tuition so I cant really blow off the rehersal. I can probably make it to the airport for a 6:00ish flight. I checked into a rental car and it is going to be $85 plus insurance. I cant afford a rental alone and I am not very comfortable driving alone, at night, in the middle of no where, where I have never been.

So is anyone going to be leaving oahu or arriving on the big island on friday evening? I am willing to pitch in for a rental/gas money.

Change in Gate Times from Survival Guide Info

Aloha:

We have extended the Gate hours. They are now from 8 am to 10 pm on Thursday and Friday and 8 am to 9 pm on Saturday. However, it has come to our attention that ATA has some new flights arriving in Hilo at 9 pm, which does not give people time to rent a car, get supplies, etc. and arrive by 10. There are also some inter-island flights that arrive late from Honolulu. We are considering opening the Gate again from 11 pm to Midnight on Thursday and Friday if there are people who are going to be stuck. Please let me know if you are on one of these late flights, 'cause we aren't going to make a volunteer to sit at the gate when he could be getting drunk or something important unless someone needs it.

It is important that we know to get someone out there if you don't want to get stuck in limbo, so please reply to this post or contact me if you are arriving late.

need helpers and food for the imu

Hi all,

I'm cooking pigs again this year (assuming I have a successful hunt). Looking for volunteers to help me out with prepping the imu, tending the imu during cooking and pulling the food at the end.

Also if you have breadfruit, potatoes, turkey, chicken or other foods that will do well in a slow bake/steam/smoke cooking underground oven then please bring them and coordinate with me so that they make it into the imu for the Friday luau. Food goes into the imu in the wee early morning hours on Friday for removal at the end of Friday afternoon. At which point we all get to sample some really good food.

If anyone needs stuff shipped I will be happy to take your stuff down to the shipyard and get it in Hilo and bring it to Rebirth. (limited by what will fit in my car).

I will be dropping off cargo on Tuesday April 17th. Picking up at the Hilo shipyard the morning of Wed April 25.

Shipping rates are about $1/cubic foot.
