Project: Film Stills

I've been experimenting recently with using a digital camera to take film stills from the TV. The distorted quality you get from the dual media (TV screen plus digital camera) creates some interesting textures. Plus, it's possible to decontextualize individual images from the intended narrative and then create new narratives.

You can see a series of stills I recently took, as well as some additional thoughts on kidnapping images from television here:

Interesting stuff...so are you just shooting digital images of the TV set? I think that is what you are saying...right?

    Any...cool stuff!

Right, just a series of digital pictures. Generally, I've been making sure all the lights are off and that the flash is deactivated in order to have the screen be the only light source (the camera will need to be either on a tripod or sitting on a steady surface to avoid blur). That way, it isn't immediately evident that the pics are screenshots.

    those are nice -
    - the scan lines of the tv and camera are out of phase with each other and make those distortion stripes-

Thanks! In fact, I wonder whether viewing these images on a screen create additional distortion pattens. Maybe I should try to make some prints.
