Agenda:
Recap of 2007 event; successes and challenges.
Aries – Positive experience, camp worked great.
Challenge – Need to acculturate flakey people at our camp.
Suddenly – Also thought it was a great year, positive.
Challenge – Shade early on for set up crew.
Challenge – Carpenter no shows
Tracy – Also thought it was a successful year. Clean up team worked well. 6 people total worked well.
Challenge – people that are doing things in our camp and making messes, need to be made to clean up after themselves.
Spanky – Blue took Spanky in as refugee. New to the camp, plans to be even more involved.
Challenge – sorting situation for the cans. Need sorting tables.
Generally everyone agreed it was a great year. We also seemed to be in agreement on what the challenges were and are already brainstorming solutions.
Ideas for 2008
– Sorting Table scheme including shade in front of the crusher dome.
– Durable, flexible, lightweight bins. Large but not too large. To replace the heavy shopping carts and small milk crates.
– Improve barrier along the road. More defined separation of work area vs. camping area.
– Shade for tent camping, I repeat, SHADE FOR TENT CAMPING!!! =)
– A chillout area location that allows for observation of the front of camp/work area after hours to help deter dumping.
– Garlic crates instead of burlap bags. We will need something under the crates.
– Clamps – need 2 dozen more for various things.
Recycling beyond the aluminum cans
We had a good discussion on this subject. We reached a consensus (Not everyone agreed 100% but it was consensus) that we do not plan to expand Recycling to include anything beyond aluminum cans at Recycle Camp. Some people felt that if the name of the camp were something other than Recycle Camp, something that spoke more to the aluminum, that people would be less inclined to think of us as a Recycling Center that should be taking all things. It was pointed out that the main purpose of BRC Recycle Camp is to promote the 6 R’s, Respect, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Restore. To promote the mantra for Personal Responsibility “Pack it in, Pack it out”. Teach people how to “Do” Burning Man without bringing hundreds of plastic water bottles to the Playa. Teach them to separate their recyclables from their trash and if possible the compostable organics too. Recycle Camp is an educational camp. It is also a working recycling station, that is the Participation Angle for the camp. It is important to understand why BM the Organization does not exist to provide every possible service in BRC, only the ones vital to the events existence and survival. Everything else is produced, installed, serviced, enjoyed, uninstalled and finally taken away by the participants. This is the way BM is, it is the way it works. It is the reason BM is and it is the reason it works.
In addition, a separate discussion took place regarding the separation & collection of recyclables from the BM Org Departments. MrBlue is determined to make this effort happen again and again, year after year. He is already working with DPW, The Commissary, The Café and others to evaluate the effort in 2007 and fix any problems and iron out the wrinkles so to speak. MrBlue is asking members of the Recycle Camp crew to think about whether or not you want to be involved with making this effort a success in 2008. We will talk more about this in future meeting as new developments arise.
