*******Meeting Notes********

****Look for the **** and you will find my notes.

Recycle Camp – Meeting 03/30/2008
3PM – 5PM
BMHQ, 1st Floor Conference Room

****Meeting was moved to the Board Room on the 2nd floor. (There was a knitting workshop in the 1st floor conference room)

Agenda

Introductions: Name, # of years attending BM, # of years at Recycle
Camp, ???

*****Blue - 8th Burn, 8th year at Recycle Camp
*****Anna - 3rd Burn, 3rd year at Recycle Camp
*****Sarah - 3rd Burn, 3rd year at Recycle Camp
*****AWOL - 2nd Burn, 2nd year at Recycle Camp
*****Eric - 4th burn, 1st year at Recycle Camp
*****Jenny - 4th burn, 1st year at Recycle Camp

Recap of 2007 event: successes and challenges.

*****Went over the recap for the people that weren't at the 1st meeting.

Camp Layout – due April 18th (The day after “Wear your PJ’s to work
day.”)

Ideas from the February 24th meeting.

– Sorting Table scheme including shade in front of the crusher
dome.

****We continued discussion on the sorting table ideas. Definitely more shade. Blue brought up the idea of more visual signs. Eric worked up an idea to use a character such as a raccoon and a message for each step of the sorting & crushing process. Basically taking the participants through the steps, having them deal with their cans and their MOOP more efficiently while having a fun experience. And a cold beverage when their done, especeially if they ride the bike.

– Durable, flexible, lightweight bins. Large but not too large.
To replace the heavy shopping carts and small milk crates.

****We want to get like a dozen of these. They want to be the "Rubber Made" type, flexible rubber, not hard rigid plastic. The hard rigid plastic shatters easily. Everyone look for these on Craigslist or at garage/yard sales.

****Used for the sorting process, like the bins you use when you go through security at the airport, participants come to the sorting area, get a bin or 2 and move to the table where they sort their cans and place only the cans in the rubber bins. Then they take the bin to the crusher and well you get the idea.

– Improve barrier along the road. More defined separation of
work area vs. camping area.

****See garlic/onion crates below.

– Shade for tent camping, I repeat, SHADE FOR TENT CAMPING!!! =)

****We went over an idea that was first proposed at the first meeting. Blue took the idea and worked it a little. It is basically 4, 12x24 shade structures configured so that their is an open space in the middle. We will erect the 14 foot tall dome in the open space. It will be very cool. I am going to work up a drawing in the next 2 weeks and I will put it up on the Tribe site for viewing. (Joing the Tribe if you haven't already!!!)

– A chillout area location that allows for observation of the
front of camp/work area after hours to help deter dumping.

****Those at the meeting today think that the viewing spot from atop the container is the prime spot for this. This doesn't help when people spend more time chilling in the space under the deck. Part of the appeal of the chill space under the deck last year and basically 2006's shade space that was similar, is that it is set away and not viewable from the work/public space. Blue will consider all this when doing the camp layout.

– Garlic crates instead of burlap bags. We will need something
under the crates.

****Blue has secured 2 dozen of these so far.
****Plan is to use these to create the barrier along 6:00 & Center Camp, to deter people wandering into the work area after hours. We can also do a row of these to dived he public space from the more private camping area.

Core Recycle Camp Campers - Roles

****TABLED THIS TILL NEXT MEETING

****Next Meeting will be either Sunday April 27th or Saturday May 3rd?!?!? Please give me feedback on which day works best for you. We will decide in a week. Meeting will be like 2PM to 4PM or 3PM to 5PM or suggest a better time.

Again, thanks to all that came to the meeting, I appreciate the collaborative process.

peace,
blue

Recycling beyond the aluminum cans

We had a good discussion on this subject. We reached a consensus (Not everyone agreed 100% but it was consensus) that we do not plan to expand Recycling to include anything beyond aluminum cans at Recycle Camp. Some people felt that if the name of the camp were something other than Recycle Camp, something that spoke more to the aluminum, that people would be less inclined to think of us as a Recycling Center that should be taking all things. It was pointed out that the main purpose of BRC Recycle Camp is to promote the 6 R’s, Respect, Rethink, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Restore. To promote the mantra for Personal Responsibility “Pack it in, Pack it out”. Teach people how to “Do” Burning Man without bringing hundreds of plastic water bottles to the Playa. Teach them to separate their recyclables from their trash and if possible the compostable organics too. Recycle Camp is an educational camp. It is also a working recycling station, that is the Participation Angle for the camp. It is important to understand why BM the Organization does not exist to provide every possible service in BRC, only the ones vital to the events existence and survival. Everything else is produced, installed, serviced, enjoyed, uninstalled and finally taken away by the participants. This is the way BM is, it is the way it works. It is the reason BM is and it is the reason it works.

In addition, a separate discussion took place regarding the separation & collection of recyclables from the BM Org Departments. MrBlue is determined to make this effort happen again and again, year after year. He is already working with DPW, The Commissary, The Café and others to evaluate the effort in 2007 and fix any problems and iron out the wrinkles so to speak. MrBlue is asking members of the Recycle Camp crew to think about whether or not you want to be involved with making this effort a success in 2008. We will talk more about this in future meeting as new developments arise.
Camp layout for 2008

Tabled this discussion until the March meeting.

Roles for core Recycle Camp campers

o Peoples interests/roles

- I am asking everyone to think of what interests you most about Recycle Camp and what part of the camp operation you get passionate about. I want to talk more about this at the March meeting.

o Arrival and departure dates

- This was tabled until the March meeting.

Next meeting - March 30, 2008 2 – 4 PM at BMHQ 1st Floor Conference Room. If this changes, we will let everyone know.

I know a lot of people have a stash of old tapes in a box in the basement that they've forgotten about. Why not get rid of the tapes and donate 'em to a good cause?! I will recycle the tapes (via true recycling, not downcycling) and use them as part of my upcoming album.
