Hey people,

I have been working to hard to get this project rolling (pun perhaps intended). What it is is that I felt like it was time for me live in a house, but there was this issue of rent, and none of the jobs available to me fit with my goals and values, so I decided to create my own job. What I am working on is not your typical business, but a collective, in which we work together to pick up people's food waste, compost it and grow food (and sell compost later down the road). I have been working on advertising, very basically because this style of capitalism (velorutionary anarcho-capitalism) is still new to me. I have some flyers printed up that I have been distributing, I've been talking it up around town and the response has been very positive. I do my first pick-up tomorrow, and I estimate that by the end of the month I will have a dozen people signed up at the very least. There's work for lots of us, and I'm willing to coordinate most of the advertising and booking and dispatch, etc. It would work like, I would give you flyers, you would hand out flyers. People would call and say 'this person told me about the service' and I would take their information and the person who referred them gets the first chance to do that pick-up or pass it on to someone else in the collective. They would charge $5 a week, or whatever deal they want to work out with the customer and keep the money that they collect. (Minus a membership fee to cover photocopying, advertising and whatever other admin expenses we might have.)
I am also thinking of integrating pick-up and delivery of other things (whatever people want picked up or delivered.) People in this city are starting to think about how to reduce their 'carbon footprint'. They love the idea of 'alternative transportation.'

So quit your wage slave job and join us in creating a new and sustainable industry, collectively run with deep commitment to reducing fossil fuel use and localizing and de-industrializing civic infrastructure. The CRD is doing a pilot project to pick up compost using gas-guzzling trucks and they take the compost back to a huge facility and burn mega-electricity turning it into compost. So we need to take control of the compost situation in this town while we still have the chance. Let's show the city what real sustainability looks like.
Anyway, I'm trying to form it as a collective, and I have two or three friends already excited about joining, but we should get our shizza together and have a meeting. Where yet I don't know. Camas bookstore perhaps, or Recyclistas (though I never get up there, can you believe it?) When, who knows? Who's interested? Check out the blog I am working on at pedaltopetal.blogspot.com. I've already put a lot of work into this. It's already happening, not just a crazy idea. But I need help with it if it is going to meet it's proper potetial.
VIVA LA VELORUTION!!

  • what a cool idea... you should send a press release out to the media.. you might get some coverage that way and find some interested people. i i work at monday magazine and i know we look for stuff like this for our earth week issue.
    • That's a great idea, Julia. Thanks. I'm going to do that.
I've got the meeting details worked out now.
Tuesday, December 18 5pm-6pm at Camas Collective Bookstore and Infoshop, which is on the southwest corner of Quadra and Kings.
Potluck. So actually now that I think of it, the press release could be another agenda item.
