Hello,
I'm a 28 year old male researching study abroad (and hopefully eventual permanent relocation) options.
Right now I'm a little frustrated at the lack of surface information available to somebody with my hopes and needs.
I'm basically looking for advice to help me narrow down my potential destinations to a manageable few.
This is my wish list so far (it may shrink as my research continues):
1. Progressive/tolerant political and social environment.
2. Innovative, fertile and supported local music scene. The ability to join/start a music project that has some sort of audience (despite its relevance to surface trends - or lack of) is of extreme importance. (My tastes include Free-Jazz, Math-Rock, Avant-Noise, Experimental, Post-Punk...fugazi, mr. bungle, john zorn, the minutemen, mark ribot, fred frith, sonic youth, shellac, mogwai, godspeed, mike patton, secret chiefs 3...).
3. Friendly, warm, open and educated populace (accepting of outsiders/expatriates).
4. Friendly (and perhaps somewhat forward) dating environment (just in case I am single at that time). Somewhere where my shyness will not be a henderance or liability.
5. Good underground art/film scene. Hopefully this will also include many good film/media studies programs/schools. I would like to find a good support network within which I can nurture my documentary filmmaking habit.
Once the list is down to a manageable few, I'm going to a variety of schools in the listed cities and let that determine my fate.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks much!
Dave

Sat, November 22, 2003 - 9:54 PMBerlin or Amsterdam should have what you're looking for. I spent a year at the Free University in Berlin and found lots of opportunities for arts and music and further travel. Outside of Europe, Melbourne is also good for underground and progressive art and music. I found all my connections once I got there, it's true there isn't a lot of outside information to set things up before you arrive. You have to just jump in!

Re: Where to (for a shy artist/musician)?
Tue, December 16, 2003 - 12:44 PMHey there,
If I can plug my adopted home... 'm a Baltimoron who's been living in Hamburg for going on 7 years, and I loveit. The music scene is incredible here, and the city is more intimate than Berlin while still being "weltoffen" (literally open to the world, i.e. tolerant), with less Nazis than Berlin. Plus, the city has lots of old historical neighborhoods that give it a Village feel. There are several small but respected film festivals in the city every year.
I never thought I'd enjoy living in Germany after seveal less than great stints before coming here, but it's really an oasis. -

Tue, June 29, 2004 - 9:20 AMHi Julie,
Thanks for the advice.
I'm leaning a little toward Berlin.
Perhaps I can get to Hamburg once I'm there and check it out.
What originally brought you to Hamburg?

Re: Where to (for a shy artist/musician)?
Tue, June 29, 2004 - 11:17 AMIf you insist on relocating overseas, so be it, but Austin TX would suit your needs too. The city is geared towards people in their 20's/30's. Dating potential abounds & Texas is known for friendliness. Very tolerant socially (cannot judge politically myself), the music scene rocks in every aspect & genre and I can only presume that the arts/film scene is just as vibrant. Check out my friend Todd - he's heavily involved with AMODA - Austin Museum of Digital Art. To boot, Austin's cost of living is relatively cheaper than many cities, especially compared to those on either coast, but the city's cost of living is on the higher end in Texas. UT Austin is one of the nation's best universities.
If you're really hung up on relocating overseas, I have a few words about the UAE. While Sheikh Muhammed, the Crown Prince of Dubai (and Minister of Defense) is very progressive and is working to bring Dubai into a very modern, connected 21st century, socially Americans may find it restrictive. People are separated by gender whenever possible, but Americans still manage to date & do their own thing. (Just don't bring attention to yourself.) Politically, the average citizen doesn't play a role in politics, period. It's taboo to even openly criticize the government. Dubai is generally a safe place for Americans in the Middle East, but for your purposes, I would recommend only a vacation. -

Tue, June 29, 2004 - 7:49 PMThanks Beverly.
I looking for a bit more of a culture shock at this point.
Something to help break the crust of conventions and conditioning off a bit.
I think a European experience will help provide a catalyst of change while providing opportunities to express myself artistically.
Austin seems like an awesome place to end up and I definitely have considered it. -

Wed, June 30, 2004 - 1:18 PMOh, Dubai could give you plenty of culture shock. I lived in Abu Dhabi for almost two years and I suffered from culture shock almost the entire time I was there. Even tiny things, like picking up packages from the post office could make me cry if I got lost. Maybe Europe is your answer - just enough shock to get you out of your comfort zone, but not enough to drive you crazy. -

Re: Where to (for a shy artist/musician)?
Sat, September 4, 2004 - 1:10 AMHow's the search going? There are so many expatriate websites out there that once you pick a location it should be a lot easier to focus in on what you are looking for. Of course if you are not able to speak the local language that could be a huge setback. Remember, if you don't speak the local language then you most likely will end up with a lot of other foreigners. If that is what you want then you can find that in a lot of places.
If you want to learn a new language... which one would it be? That might be a helpful way to help you decide. Because even though many people may speak English (for example in Amsterdam) all the paperwork/bills/admin etc will be in the local language and many of those people working at those places will NOT speak English.
Europe isn't really excited about expatriates on the whole right now either.
Australia is a great place to consider. It is the land of immigrants and pretty accepting. In fact Melbourne has a great expat group.
I'm surprised you haven't considered London. Musically and artistically they should have what you are looking for and while it is extremely expensive to live there you could most likely find some flat options where people are looking for roommates.
Hugs!
Julia
