Chapter Five of the Red Witch Tradition
Creating Sacred Space
Silverstar Red Crow © 1998/2007
The strongest and most enduring magickal tool that can be possessed is the human form: body, mind and spirit. If a seeker has entered into an agreement with one’s Higher Mind and The Divine to begin an investigation into the occult arts and sciences and Witchcraft, it is not necessary to rush out and fill one’s body and home with all the trappings of modern day Witches. Since I operate a business which stocks magickal supplies, I have had a wonderful glimpse into the desired accoutrements of not only teenagers but also adult novitiates.
One early Autumn day, a middle-aged woman of average means entered my establishment. She had a sunny disposition and was direct in her desires. She marched up to the main counter and presented me with a shopping list: broom, cauldron, athame, wand, cup, burning dish; it went on and on. I was a little surprised and asked her what had inspired such a list. Most retailers would have jumped at such an opportunity, but I do not possess the best business demeanor. Some regular customers of mine tell me I am the only person who doesn’t let them buy everything they want. Her broad grin widened and a rosy glow flushed her cheeks. She said that she was reading a popular book on Eclectic Witchcraft and was compelled to create sacred space of her own and she wanted all the tools that were necessary to do so.
A vision filled my mind; this middle class suburban housewife in a brand new shiny black robe in the middle of her back yard making Holy Water, fighting off the affection of her yellow lab for space to complete her work. I scolded myself quickly and was reminded that Witches come from every conceivable background. I took a deep breath, thanked my Spirit Guides for illuminating me and said, “To create sacred space all you need is you!” She seemed almost disappointed; what about all those new and spooky things that I was going to scare my husband with, I could hear her mind say. Instead of filling her original list, I offered some new suggestions: salt, incense, a book on meditative techniques and a small manual on ritual preparation that I had put out the year before. She spent some money, had fun and received a practical direction that did not contain any spookiness. We were both happy.
Many people have different ideas about what sacred means. Is it mysterious and quiet, closed and private, protected by a Divine energy? According to Barbara Walker, sacred is a derivation of Latin sacer, which meant “untouchable” in the dual sense of both holy and unclean. No wonder there is so much mystery and awkward energy surrounding this subject. Many people cower at the very mention of the word sacred, fearing an impact that is so potentially powerful that they would explode if they claimed that power for their own. This mysteriousness, I believe, is the invention of a priestly overcast of many denominations and belief systems, trying to keep as much spiritual power as possible as a tool of control. It is the lack of foresight and individual ability that keeps sacredness out of the reach of the masses. This is obvious when studying history. When the powers of church and state join together as one force, there is a need to keep divinity out of reach for the rank and file.
I believe sacred means special, protected by The Divine and attainable. I define sacred to represent the following:
Sacred Space is an area that has been blessed by intent and prayer and is guarded by the Spirit World to retain powers of protection, inspiration and initiation. It can be private or public as long as it is respected and its borders uncorrupted by negative intent or disregard.
A Sacred Object once was a part of the Natural World and has been reshaped and dedicated to exemplify Divinity; it can be touched and used as a tool for the seeker to become closer to The Divine.
A Sacred Act is an action taken to protect the sanctity of life, to heal wounds on all levels, to provide comfort for those asking, who are in need and to teach or pass on the wisdom of the ages.
A Sacred Person is an individual who through thought and deed embodies divinity and seeks to upraise the sufferings of others so that illumination of one’s choices can become clear.
I believe that participating in an intentional feast in celebration of a holy or special day, praying for harmony and fairness in society and physical acts of stewardship for nature and all creatures, including plant life and the mineral kingdom, are sacred acts. The cornerstone of Practickal Magick is the practice of any act, whether mundane or spiritual that is backed with positive intention, which becomes a powerful life-affirming step towards evolution. Consequently, manifesting the desire to create Sacred Space is the first and most edifying step of the process.
The Circle is used throughout the world as a fitting display of Sacred Space, since it has no beginning or end and it shares the qualities of both female and male. There is debate on how large a Sacred or Magickal Circle should be, some scholars and Witches believe that a real Magickal Circle needs to be 9’ in diameter, 3 X’s 3 = 9.
I believe that Sacred Space can be created almost anywhere, in any shape, depending on need, and can be almost any size. Any size; well, I said almost. When creating a protected magickal area, you have to gauge what your personal energy can handle. Remember each person generates different energy levels at different times. Try this exercise to elaborate my point: stand with your feet two feet apart, with arms outstretched. Now, begin to twirl slowly clockwise. As the air in the room begins to move and swirl in response to the whirling motion, feel the electrical charge that is created around your body. Stop twirling and try to measure where the energy stops. Now, repeat the process, but twirl counterclockwise, releasing the energy.
In affect, through motion, you created a space potent with energy, or a Magick Circle, if properly dedicated to be so. Since it was created in a circular fashion, with a physical body as its focus point, it was approximately 5.5 feet in diameter. Did you feel that you were in psychic control of that space or was it too charged with energy for you to handle? When creating Sacred Space, you must be clear about what your power limits are and do not manifest inappropriate bravado about what that means. It is not wise to overwhelm your being, especially when it is not equipped to handle it. Even though the calling of the Spirit World and The Divine are important ingredients in generating magickal space, you are ultimately responsible for it, including the charge and upliftment of the area. It is your energy that is manifesting it and maintaining it. It is a great responsibility. If it feels right, then you know you can handle that amount of space. If it felt fun and charged, but dizzying and out of control, you know that it is too much space for you to handle.
A great idea to measure psychic space, which has been used by Witches forever, is achieved by using a rock and rope or heavy cording. Tie a fairly large rock, about 5” in diameter, with rayon cord about ten feet long; I use red for potency. Tie the first knot 18” from the rock, then every three feet in the cord. Put the rock directly on the floor or ground, this will work as your center point of the circle. Then, take the cord at the first knot and walk around the circle clockwise, measuring a three-foot circle. Once the boundaries are clear, remove the rock and twirl inside of the three-foot circle, being careful to honor the boundaries of the circle, which means that you will be unable to stretch out your arms and still stay within the circle. How do you feel? If you feel that it is manageable space, move on to the next knot that will create a nine-foot circle. If that space feels too large and your energy feels as if it is waning, tie an additional knot half way between the first and second knot, which will make a six-foot circle. Then test yourself, once again. Remember to Clear, Center and Ground and turn on your energy before trying this exercise. This will protect your energy out-go so fatigue will not be a problem. For each revolution you move in a clockwise fashion, once the particular test is complete, be sure to move in a counterclockwise manner to release the energy formed. This is a wonderful exercise to test powers of manifestations and it helps to set reasonable limits.
Once reasonable limits are set, it is time to search for the ideal area in which to create Sacred Space. I suggest looking for three different areas:
The first area is for personal Altar space, along a Northern wall in the room that has been designated for private use only.
The second is for a future ritual area, preferably as a part of designated private space.
The third area is out of doors and will be used for Altar and ritual space, house shrines, etc.
Indoors:
To create a personal Sacred Space, initially identify a private, bare area, that is free of clutter, traffic and pets and with a good heat source and ventilation. This space will eventually become a personal Altar and ritual area. It should primarily provide safety. Ideally, anything can be said or done here, as long as it causes no harm. This is where a personal relationship with The Divine can be forged, where experiments with the forces of the universe can be made and where one can eventually become a part of that universe. The most appropriate location for an Altar is in the North, since North is the direction of the Goddess, of Tradition, Wisdom and The Old Ways.
A note about indoor animals: many Witches have life-long profound relationships with animals, particularly pets. I am not suggesting eliminating these powerful friendship bonds, by having personal Altar and ritual areas free from pets; it is the “traffic” that I am concerned with. Eventually, you will be called upon to do complicated spellwork that will include the burning of incenses and candles, some candles staying lit for days. Consequently, it is important to protect these vulnerable areas from fire and accidents. Starhawk mentions in her book, The Spiral Dance, it is wise to segregate pets from ritual areas, since they are not accustomed to understanding and revering boundaries.
Outdoors:
Finding an Altar Space out of doors can be a difficult feat. Be persistent, however, as performing rituals outside under the stars or while soaking-up warm rays of sunshine can be its own reward. Be sure to choose an area that is completely guarded against all traffic, from people, animals or noise. As I have stated above concerning pets, it is wise to protect an outdoor area as well. Study the terrain. Be sensitive to the wants of the Natural World, you are in another territory, now. It is disrespectful to build a stone Altar in an established deer trail. This would bring discomfort to the creatures of the Natural World. It is important to set realistic goals for outdoor ritual. It is almost impossible to guard against a wild creature breaking the ritual circle out of doors. As a matter of fact, if perceived correctly , wild creatures can bring blessings and insight.
It may be necessary to create a space, perhaps a sheltered rock garden, a partially covered gazebo or other natural-looking nooks and crannies. If you find an almost perfect area, but one side of it is opened to the sometime prying eyes of neighbors, if it is doable, create a wall or fence. Remember safety counts and safety includes comfort. In the late nineteen-nineties, a certain small town in South Florida made it illegal to “pray over outdoor barbecues or fires”. Their town had become a popular destination spot for Witches, both on holiday and as permanent residences. This infuriated the conservative “town fathers”. So legislation was passed to intimidate and curb the activities of the unwanted minority. Do not underestimate the power of neighbors.
Regardless of how much one may love Nature, keep the outdoor Altar the secondary place of worship. Ritual should not be postponed due to rain, or any other occurrences of the Natural World. This can become an easy cop-out to avoid magickal work and worship. So, prepare for that New Moon on Tuesday, when it is below zero, you are sleep-deprived and the laundry needs to be done. Create a ritual area that is flexible and is a pleasurable oasis that is always waiting for your visit.
USING YOUR BODY AS A MAGICKAL TOOL
As you have seen in the exercise outlined in the first part of this chapter, the human form is a remarkable energy source. It is phenomenal to think about all the possibility located in and around our personal physical bodies and the power that is generated by the human mind. It is truly a miracle.
One can harness the inherent power of human form and with the assistance of the Spirit Realms and The Divine, create Sacred Space with it. The physical body, stated earlier, is our greatest ally in magickal work and is our greatest stumbling block. Because of superficial and negative attachments, the human body is a receptacle of unhealthy fear (not all fear is unhealthy), misguided intention and self-righteousness. Only after releasing our attachments to unwanted patterns, can we enlist successfully the power of magick. Coming this far in your spiritual education, you realize the importance of elimination, work and commitment to self that it takes to live a magickal life; it is time to activate your intention.
Clear, Center, Ground and turn-on your psychic energy; face North in your private space and take three deep cleansing breaths. Stretch and wiggle the kinks out of your body. Rub your hands vigorously together, just like the beginning process of cleaning the auric field. Then, look at the palms and opened fingers of your hands. See the intricate patterns in the skin of your palms, study them.
Let your eyes go out of focus, slightly. As your heart beats and the throbbing of the turned-on energy pumps in your fingertips, allow your eyes to see the energy that you are busily manufacturing. When you have successfully seen some of the energy (it is not necessary to see pyrotechnics), visualize a stream of silver light coming into the fingertips of your left hand; this is the Goddess’ energy. To successfully activate the energy of the Goddess, which is receptive in nature, it must be teamed with the vital catalytic energy of the God, which is assertive. Without that vital energy link, the manifestation of balanced Divine energy is rarely possible. You are, in effect, a clear channel for The Divine, if you allow the energy to flow. Feel the Divine Energy flow, in the form of silver light.
Raise your left arm to chest level and visualize the silver light flow up your left arm, through the shoulder area and let it rest in the Heart Chakra area. Lower your arm. Let the silver energy activate the Heart Chakra. As the Heart Chakra slowly spins clockwise, feel the silver light transform into the gold light of the God. Let the gold light engulf the whole chest region, spreading solar warmth to the entire body. Lift your right arm. See the gold light flow down your right and fill your right hand. Imagine golden light streaming into the right index finger; this is your magick wand! Study the feelings that your body and mind are experiencing. Feel the tingly sensation and the throbbing of the right index finger. Now, visualize the golden light stream from your index finger as you aim the stream to approximately 5” from the opened fingers of your left hand. See the gold light transform itself into the silver light of the Goddess. Now, form a pyramid shape with your hands as outlined in Chapter Two and visualize the light switch turning off. Take a deep cleansing breath and relax.
This simple technique illustrates the ability to not only generate, but also channel and direct individual energy. Now it is time to unify the exercises of desiring to create, generation of energy through motion, finding one’s limits and aiming energy, to successfully create Sacred Space.
Aura Exercise
To further my point of viewing the human body as a magickal tool, try this exercise. Once you become proficient at it, you will want to incorporate it into your daily spiritual routine, at least for a while.
Ask a friend to assist you the first time you practice this spiritual exercise. Offer them lunch or tea and a relaxing afternoon. Find the largest, blankest wall in your home. Facing the wall, create a comfortable place to sit, in a straight-back chair. Smudge the room and your body and friend thoroughly and offer thanks and respect to the 5-Directions. Clear, Center and Ground and raise a Power Cone. Invite your friend to sit solidly against the blank wall and to begin meditating. Make sure the room is dimly lit, but not dark.
Sit comfortably in your chair with both feet touching the ground. Go through the complete Relaxation Meditation, beginning with your feet, rising through your body and ending at the top of your head. Continue breathing the 4-8 breathing pattern, while focusing your eyes in the center of your forehead (the 3rd Eye Chakra Center).
Now, slowly open your eyes. Focus on the top of your friend’s head. Let your eyes relax. Stay quiet and centered. Avoid direct eye contact. You will start to notice a slight glow around your friend’s body.
Gently concentrate on that glow; it is not unusual to see specks of light all through the air. The specks might appear to be little sparks of energy or faint electric eyelashes. This is called PRANA = Soul Energy. Prana is Life-Force on a molecular level, what we are all made up of; in Polynesia, this same energy is called Mana, in Japan Ki, in Chinese Chi.
Keep concentrating. If you are fortunate, you will begin to notice color emanating from the glow. This is the AURIC FIELD. Remain calm and continue to see as much as you can.
After several weeks or months, you will become aware of AURAS without doing any exercise. You will sensitize yourself to your surroundings to the point where you feel, sense and see the Pranic energy flowing through and with us. Eventually, you will be able to see AURAS around all things, from your pets, to your Spiritual Tools, to the refrigerator. Everything!
DIRECTIONAL MEDITATION
Before starting the process of creating Sacred Space, alert your being to the power of the 5-Directions by performing this meditation. Sit with back straight, either on a cushion or in a chair, facing North. If seated on a chair, place both feet flat on the floor or ground. If seated on the floor, cross legs, right over left; palms should be open (slightly curved in, so you are not giving your energy away, but recycling and generating more) and resting on the thighs. Have the area as quiet as possible. Clear, Center and Ground. Follow the directions of the Breathing Exercise, allowing at least 5 minutes for deep meditation.
Visualize yourself as one with the planet, blue and green, energized and serene.
From the East, feel the first rays of yellow sunshine on your face. As you watch, The Sun rises on the horizon, and a large golden eagle flies out of the sunrays. As it flies over your head, feel the energy surge through your entire body, feeling its power.
Know that the power of the East is Air. Know that this power brings inspiration and the desire to communicate your union between body and mind.
From the South, feel the burning of the mid-day sun beat down in powerful rays on your head. As you absorb heat from The Sun, become aware of a brilliant white horse, as white as the hottest flame. It seems to cover the sky.
Watch its powerful gait, hear its loud snorts and neighs, smell its powerfully sweet scent, feel its heat, taste the salt of its flying sweat.
Know that the power of the South is Fire. This power brings rebirth, purified by red flames.
From the West, see the last rays of The Sun begin to change to the brilliant colors of the rainbow. Feel a slight chill as the Crescent Moon rises over a large and gently lapping lake.
Hear your finned sisters and brothers popping their heads from the deep waters, trying to glimpse the radiant majesty of The Moon.
Immerse yourself in the cool blue waters, waking to a sharper image of the world around you. Know that the power of the West is Water. This power brings the fullness of the essence of truth.
From the North, see the electric glow of the Full Moon in an indigo sky surrounded by the Great Star Nation. The Moon’s glow has illuminated the deep greens of the Great Northern Forest.
Become aware of all the creatures of the night. Here you are safe; part of all the great spiritual traditions of your ancestors.
Know the power of the North is Earth. Feel the knowledge you have gained throughout your life, transformed into wisdom.
From the Center, you are now in the realm of Spirit. You are surrounded by a dry purple mist, out of which you feel the gentle explosions of crystalline energy. You are joined in this land of dreams by all the other elements: Air, Fire, Water and Earth. As you all touch, healing energy is released and is quickly absorbed again, repeating the cycle of Life, over and over.
Know that the power of Spirit is Ether. Experience the joy of your most hidden wondrous dreams as they manifest before your eyes.
Raise your arms to the sky and say aloud,
“Great Spirit, Grandmothers, Grandfathers,
Great Goddess, Great God,
Bless me with your love, guidance and protection.
Let me soar to great heights,
as I embrace your energy.
So Be It!”
Take 3 cleansing breaths. Open your eyes, focus on the fresh and vigorous energy of the meditation.
GESTURING
Gesturing is a way to acclimate one’s body to the physicality of the 5-Directions. It can be used as a tool to create Sacred Space, employing all the techniques mentioned earlier in this chapter. “Spiritual Calisthenics” is an appropriate way to describe gesturing; by moving and stretching the human body, the attention of the mind is focused and the innate abilities of personal psychic power are heightened. Gesturing teaches positive control and how to effectively work within our individually set limits. Gesturing shares many qualities of Tai Chi, though it is not as complex. It is an exercise that has the potential of creating profound integration between body, mind and spirit, though it depends on the approach and need of the seeker to bring to it the power and passion of practice.
Gesturing can be used to actually create dynamic magickal space and once made can be practiced additionally, within Sacred Space, to celebrate the beauty of motion and to hone stamina and endurance for involvement in ritual. When celebrating rites of Esbat or Sabbat, within the Sacred Circle, one may stand for up to 3 hours at a time, depending on the complexity of the ritual. And, for the sake of our joints, we need to be in relatively good physical shape! Even if one has a disability and is sitting while in Circle, it is still important to be in touch with the feelings generated by the body. Stamina is still a necessary ingredient because the body helps the mind to keep sharp, in order for psychic energies to flow properly. Many people have misconceptions about disabilities, thinking that the physical body takes a minor role to the mind or spirit for those who are unable to walk, bend, stand or exert their bodies fiercely. This is far from the truth. Many people with disabilities require even more physical stamina, because they suffer from the constant onslaught of pain, which takes an extraordinary amount of endurance to remain in a good sitting posture, not to mention in a positive frame of mind.
Much of the following gesturing process is performed from the waist up. Consequentially, do not let a disability hamper this exciting method to help put the body in sync with the powers of mind and spirit.
First; Clear, Center and Ground facing North. Turn-on your psychic energy. Raise a Power Cone. Put yourself into a relaxed-meditative state. Give yourself plenty of room.
While still facing North, place both arms straight out to your sides. You are forming a star, 5 points for 5-Directions.
Begin swaying to the East, then to the West, stretching your body boldly. Repeat 5 times.
Now, face East, repeat the process. Face South and repeat the process. Face West and repeat the process. Face North again and repeat the process. You have awakened to the particular powers of all 5 Elements, allowing the physical body to be charged by each in its particular power direction.
Beginning in the North, spin clockwise 5 times. You have now cast a Circle, creating Sacred Space with the power of physical movement.
Still facing North, and keeping your legs a shoulder’s width apart, lift both hands to chest level, palms down. Press fingers together. As you tighten all your fingers together, feel a sense of connection to the Goddess. Feel the power, wisdom and tradition of the North. Feel the solidity of Earth.
Face East. With legs apart, raise hands twelve inches higher, palms facing away from body, elbows slightly bent. Spread your fingers as wide as you can and hold them in this position. As Air passes through your fingers, feel the unfurling of wings as if flight were to commence. Feel the inspiration, creativity and the electricity of the East. Feel the transmuting power of Air.
Face South. With legs apart, lift your hands above your head. Elbows straight, hands in fists. As you feel your fists tightly clench, feel the vital energy of the God flow through you. Feel the purification and renewal of the South. Feel the flames of Fire.
Face West. With legs apart, lower hands twelve inches. Bend elbows, palms upward and cup them; thumbs touching forefingers, creating the symbols of The Moon, both New and Full. Feel the pull of the tides sway your emotions. Feel the truth and courage of the West! Feel the fluidity of Water.
Face North again. With legs apart, head back, raise both hands to the sky, palms up, fingers spread, bending your back as much as you can. Feel all 4-Elements combine and become one powerful force, filling every cell in your body with power. Feel the connection to all life-forms through Spirit. Feel the dreams of Ether.
Repeat Step #2, but proceed counterclockwise.
Now, spin 5 times counterclockwise. You have opened your Circle.
Later on in your studies, you will keep the Circle closed and perform your ritual right after gesturing in the Fifth Element of Ether (or Spirit). After the ritual is completed, final steps are taken to open the Circle and transform the once Sacred Space to corporal reality. It is my feeling if you establish the borders of Sacred Space in a particular area; it will retain a certain protected feeling and dimension that is greater than normal reality. But, it is necessary to begin each and every time you perform ritual, with a new and clean Sacred Space. You might think that this is simply too simple; did you think that a creation of this kind was difficult and extremely mysterious and dangerous? It is all that and more, depending on how you look at it.
USING THE COMBINATION OF SOUND AND MOTION TO CREATE SACRED SPACE
Sound not only gets the attention of humans and animals, it puts all living creatures of the Natural World and the Spirit World on alert. By announcing your presence to the Natural World and the Spirit Realms, a direct energy link is created between all life forms. I am not suggesting that you walk to the center of a pristine mountain meadow and blast it with the sounds of heavy metal, just making sure that you are heard. There is a difference between sound and noise and in this present society, noise pollution has become a real problem. I am suggesting that you employ the varied world of harmony, coupled with movement of the physical body, in order to manifest enchantment and ingratiate the protection of the Spirit World.
Calculated physical movement can be extremely stiff and not particularly pleasing to the eye. But when choreographed movement marries music, the joyous art form of dance is created. Dance has the ability to stir emotion, without the use of words or conditions. It is powerful and all peoples, regardless of background or heritage, are touched by dance. Have you ever wondered why dance is prohibited by some conservative religions? Dance produces personal power and the desire for freedom, which the practitioner of magick can harness.
First acquire a good cassette deck or portable CD player with a remote control. Select music that is harmonious with your surroundings, neither loud nor offensive in any way. Handle it with care, as if it were a magickal tool; clean, smudge and store it reverently. Then choose a preferred ritual location. Once the area is mentally mapped out, place the stereo outside the boundaries of where you want to create the Sacred Circle. But have it loaded with the chosen music and have possession of the remote; tuck it into a belt or put it in a pocket.
Clear, Center, Ground, turn-on your psychic energy and raise a Power Cone. Place yourself at the top Northern point of where you want the Circle and face North. Ask the Goddess and the God to bless you in your endeavors and to protect you from all harm. Center your intent. Turn on the music with the remote control device. Let the music flow through you for several moments, closing your eyes and focusing on the emotions that the music is creating. Once you can visualize your body moving to the music, open your eyes and begin to slowly dance clockwise around the mental bounds of the Circle. Let your mind drift to visions of vast green forests, as you think of Earth. Dance the entire Circle, carefully making mental notes of its psychic boundaries. Keep dancing and when you reach the Eastern point of the now completed Circle, let the yellow energy of Air envelop your body. Dance the entire Circle, thinking of the element of Air. Do not stop dancing. When your reach the Southern point, shift your mind to the powers of Fire; let your body be swept away with the warm nature of Fire and continue to dance the Circle. This could take some time; be sure to choose music without apparent endings, songs that segue easily into each other. Now, let your body take itself to the Western point of Water. Feel it flow through you as you dance the entire Circle. Let yourself be led to North again, this time feeling the purple of Ether flooding your senses. Dance the Circle one last time, feeling the intensity of formed Sacred Space.
Once the space is created, spend time listening to the music, feeling the growing power of the area. Feel free to move yourself to the center of the Circle, all the while being sensitive to the growing power of the 5-Elements around you. This space can be used for ritual or simply as an area for individual empowerment. Went your task is complete, open the Circle the same way you created it, by dancing, but this time dance counterclockwise. Feel the elemental change with each direction. Once you have completed all five rounds, stand in the North, facing North and thank the Goddess and the God for their blessings and protection.
Try this basic technique again, but alter it slightly. Instead of dancing, face North and clap three times with your hands above your head. Walk the Circle, slowly and deliberately, thinking about the power of Earth, until you come to the Eastern point. Stop walking, put your hands above your head and clap three times. Continue through all 5-Directions, thinking about the power of all 5-Elements. Feel the amazing power that has been created through simple movements, coupled with sound. Make sure that you do not miss any steps when opening the Circle, repeating each step thoroughly and thoughtfully, counterclockwise. This technique can be used with whistling, playing the flute, tin whistle or eagle bone whistle, using a rattle or beating a drum. Experiment and what best suits your personality.
CREATING SACRED SPACE FOR ALTARS
Creating Sacred Space for Altars is not all that different from Circles, but Altars are not always within a Circle. Altars in this tradition are commonly along the North wall in a private space. Since the Altar space is against a solid structure, it is physically impossible to get all around it to form an energy cone. This is a typical problem, but not insurmountable. Earlier, I mentioned that I believe that Sacred Space can be created in any shape or size, as long as it is created within the bounds of our innate powers. Choose the area you want to sanctify for your personal Altar. Physically clean the area, and then smudge it. Choose the appropriate furniture that will be used to hold your magickal focal points, tools, stones and herbs, whether it is a hanging shelf, table or dresser top. Clean and smudge the furniture as well.
Review the aiming exercise that transforms a human finger into a magick wand. Basically, you will use your finger to draw a Magickal Circle around your Altar Space, which will be magickally incased in a Power Cone of its own. Power Cones can be constructed out of squares, rectangles, stars, pyramids. So do not limit your energy because of the piece of furniture you have chosen. You are limited only by the bounds of imagination and need. By using the power of visualization, stumbling blocks like walls, gates, doors even the borders of countries become impotent.
When preparing Sacred Space for Altars, prepare yourself for ritual: psychically protect yourself and environment, then purify your body and space including the act of smudging and then turn-on your power. I find it helpful to do some stretching and gesturing to increase my energy level, before tackling the project directly. At this point, you can create Sacred Space by using twirling motion. Call on the Goddess and the God and ask for their protection and blessings and, if you feel comfortable in doing so, call on the Spirit Guides that have recently introduced themselves to you through the meditation exercises you have been practicing.
Move to the exact spot in which you want the Altar to be positioned. Charge your hands thoroughly, then move your hands through the open space, just like you do when cleaning your aura. Then, as outlined in the aiming exercise, direct silver light into your body through the left hand and transmute the silver light to gold and release it through the right index finger. This applies to right and left-handed people. The left side of the human body is the receptive side and the right side is the assertive. With golden light emanating through the right index finger, draw the desired shape, clockwise, to form a Power Cone. Ask the Goddess and the God to bless this area and protect it as Sacred Space. With feet, two feet apart and arms chest high, bent at the elbows and palms open (the Goddess Position) say:
“I dedicate this holy and private place
to the workings of the Divine Mother.
May kindness and sweetness grow,
as knowledge and wisdom gain control.
Blessed Be.”
Thank The Divine for their blessings. Ground the Power Cone firmly into the Earth. Open the Circle that you have created by twirling counterclockwise. Then, turn your energy off. Make sure that you remember to turn your psychic energy off after magickal workings. Otherwise, your being can become overloaded with power and begin to hurt. Too much of a good thing can be unpleasant. Try to maintain a sense of balance in everything you do.
Use this same procedure before setting up an Altar out-of-doors.
SETTING-UP PERSONAL INDOOR ALTAR SPACE
Refer to the gathering list in Chapter Three, “Spiritual Purification”. Lay out all of the supplies listed below and smudge them and yourself thoroughly. Clear, Center, Ground and raise a Power Cone. Take the Goddess Position facing North and ask the Goddess and the God to bless you in your work, praying for direction, guidance, protection and love. Sanctify your Altar with a Medicine Wheel of Kosher Salt, then, place a new, clean piece of red cloth over the salt. On the West side of the Altar, place a single black taper candle in a silver (or silver-plated or colored) candleholder. On the East side of the Altar, place a single white taper candle in a gold colored (brass is fine) candleholder. Over the Altar, place a drawing of the Wheel of the Natural Year (see graphics).
Carefully place each item that you have gathered lately, including the substitute tools for the 5-Directions that were gathered during the studying of Chapter Four, “Remembering”. For items that are ruled by receptive Goddess energy, items from the sea (with exception of the smudge shell) or the Earth, place them on the West side of the Altar, in front of the black taper candle. For items that are from the air, feathers, and items that represent fire, the smudge shell and incense, place on the East side, in front of the white taper. Do not be concerned about having the exact placement for your spiritual supplies, at this time. Your understanding will continue to grow, consequently, your Altar will proceed to change. Follow the messages given to you by your Higher Mind. Let Spirit guide you with this endeavor.
Once you have completed setting up the Altar and feel good about its appearance and feel, light the taper candles, beginning with the black one, remembering that the Goddess comes first in ritual, symbolizing Her power as Life Giver. Sit in front of the Altar and meditate for five to ten minutes, surrounding the Altar with visualized light of many colors, imbuing it with rainbow energy. The rainbow is a symbol of humankind at its height, joined with the powers of divinity. It also symbolizes spiritual action, though it is calm and represents patience and moderation in all things. End this pleasant meditation, feeling refreshed and grateful for the energy of the Spirit World. Extinguish the candles with a candlesnuffer. Thank the Goddess and the God for their blessings and ask them to continually protect you from harm through the charged energy of the Altar.
