OK, I wore out my shop bought breeches finally. I want to make a new pair. I can use the old ones as a pattern, but I know the fly is not right. Looks like a modern fly, except it uses Velcro for closure. Talking about a simple pair of long breeches. Any one got any links to any online patterns for middle class men's breeches that shows the fly. I hate to buy a pattern for one pair of breeches. I will if I have to, but I only need know about the fly. Don't want a huge codpiece thing. Just something simple. Or is there no fly at this time?

Re: Proper Breeches
Mon, April 13, 2009 - 1:48 PMI made two sets of breeches for my husband from a McCall's pattern. I removed the elastic in the back, gathered it into a straight waistband, put velcro closures on the slit fly, then covered that with a codpiece consisting of an inverted triangle of fabric attached at the crotch by sewing and at the tops by buttons.
I don't know of a breeches pattern that is already set to go like that. Perhaps Margo Anderson has it.

Mon, April 13, 2009 - 2:30 PMI've made nine pair of breeches and slops making up a simple hybrid type of fly using the Margo Anderson Patterns and Fantasy Fashion Paned Slops and Breeches. Very easy to do and the men I sew for tell me easy to wear.
An inner fly with a outer fly/codpiece triangle. Just a couple buttons and ties hold it all together securely and easy to access for necessity needs. Positng two pic's here.

Instead of her suggestion of hooks or snaps, go with buttons made out of fabric scraps www.employees.org/~cathy/buttons.html has a quick tutorial.
