...and, in related news...
Sat, January 7, 2006 - 11:04 AMSierra Pacific Power Co. won approval from state regulators Monday to build a $420 million natural gas-fired power plant east of Sparks opening in 2008.
At least part of the cost, yet to be determined, could be born by ratepayers, but utility officials said that will need regulatory approval and wouldn't be decided for at least two years.
The plant will be built behind an existing gas-fired plant at Tracy off of Interstate 80 about 15 miles east of Sparks.

Re: ...and, in related news...
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 6:10 PMI suppose it demonstrates that power plants are being built in Nevada that are meeting local demand and that do not use coal, which is arguably has much more of a negative impact. The natural gas plant is an upgrade of an existing plant. It helps show how Sempra's plan is out of balance with local planning since it establishes a new industrial use in close proximity to an established wilderness area.
Another power plant which is more in line with sane regional planning is the Ormat 20MW geothermal power plant:

Tue, January 10, 2006 - 9:00 AMthis is good insight. i believe another letter is in order illustrating these points.
whom should it be addressed to? same people at nevada clean energy? or someone else? -

Tue, January 10, 2006 - 1:19 PMI have been pausing to collect myself before launching into renewed sabre-rattling, BUT...OK, so now to action. I'm going to start a new thread so that it gets appropriate attention.... -

Fri, January 20, 2006 - 9:27 AMit is soo sad. how many miles of wide ass horizon on the playa? has such a great potential for a solar farm, i mean the horizon is so wide, it's so sunny, wtf? am i wrong? -

Re: ...and, in related news...
Mon, January 23, 2006 - 4:56 PMWell, the Black Rock playa would never be tasked for such an enterprise, since it's a National Conservation Area, and also you would have to build the ancillary transmission wires and so forth. Certainly some other solar installation might work. Personally, I'm in favor of geothermal development, either in the Hualapai Flat or right outside of Gerlach. People always say that the water isn't hot enough in either location, but they are still listed as "prospect areas."
