HI Folks,
Several new cast members have asked me about wearing French hoods with padded rolls instead of crescents (ala page 140 of Winter and Savoy's "Elizabethan Costuming for the Years 1550 to 1580") and I can't seem to find any paintings or drawing from period of English ladies wearing anything like this.
I am not sure if these padded roll hoods are period correct for the c. 1570s or if they were ever worn by the English...I wonder if this is a misinterpretation of something else ???
Can anyone point me to a painting or other source for these padded roll hoods or does anyone know the origin of this hat appearing in the Winter and Savoy book?
thanks,
Vel

Re: French Hoods with padded rolls ?
Fri, June 26, 2009 - 1:40 PMHi Vel - unfortunately I don't know the source of Winter & Savoy's idea for padded rolls in French hoods, but my guess is if you haven't found a source so far, you probably won't... That being said, someone who has done a lot of research on what French hoods REALLY were is Sarah of Mode Historique -- you should check out her website: www.modehistorique.com/elizab...ds.html -

Fri, June 26, 2009 - 3:32 PMThanks Kendra,
The truely odd thing about the hood that appears in Winter and Savoy is that the roll is not something underneath that is done as a support (which I could see why one might do that) but rather it replaces the crescent, has jewels sewn on it and the hood/veil is sewn to it...

Re: French Hoods with padded rolls ?
Fri, June 26, 2009 - 3:36 PMI have seen a few of these in the Southern Performing Arts Department trailer from AGES ago for Commedia style outfits. They were all theatrical not historical. I've never seen a roll used as a French Hood though I have seen a bike visor ;) -

Sat, June 27, 2009 - 10:27 AMThanks folks,
I think Kimiko over on the elizabethan costume tribe may have solved the mystery...the roll may be a misinterpretation of the huge biliment on the french hood in this painting: www.kimiko1.com/research-1...kn1569.html
thanks again,
