I have headed the "Stomp out the improper use of the word Shire in our lifetime" campaign, correcting those actors that use it incorrectly with "Oh, you mean the village, town, port.." and THEN a CUSTOMER said to the actor "Yeah, that would be like me saying welcome I live in County of Orange". It is a hard road since the program says SHIRE in it (which actors have used as an excuse).

I extolled the virtues of linen and showed everyone in Court my hand sewn (with silk thread) linen smock.

I have added more historical tidbits to my loud "gossip" and have vocalized them over and over to any customer that will listen. Did a good one with Mistress Butler and the Earl of Sussex.

Me and another of my troupe-mates are lobbying and slowly working to get the dialog in our stage show to reflect more proper BFA.

      Great job, women.

Dre, can you work on getting people not to generically call the place the court is "the glade" or even "glade". Or should we just work on one thing at a time?

I can try but I think this year is pretty packed with Shire and nay not and such. Will definatly add it to the thought process though. Oooooooo David Wine, current Queens Court Guildmaster, is trying to get people to stop saying "Food Court" and say "Feasting Commons" instead so I will put this up here for him. I think that is a fine change.

I have spent my time quietly extolling the use of linen and phasing out cotton. Yes it was hot this weekend but I'm sure that even though I was sick, I was FAR comfier than my cotton clad counterparts. When the order came to drop a skirt, I didn't have to. I was rather comfy and left on my skirt and though I didn't wear my sleeves, I left them attached.
haw haw you cotton clad people. Live and learn!!!
          Linen stays wet longer too.
AND it's comfy to sleep in.

I eye poke anyone using the word shire and share the word 'town' with the patrons who still use the word shire.

I strive to maintain character unless of course under influence of two Benedryl returning from a very taxing progress in the heat when I accosted poor Pasha in the street with a drive by one armed hello hug. He was quite ruffled and annoyed and sputtered something about impropriety of commoners and I laughed all the way back to the Inn about it with my friend about how fun it is to harass the gentry rather loudly to the enjoyment of surrounding patrons. That was great.

I too no longer use 'food court' and use, instead, terms like 'food stalls' and 'feasting commons'. Funny enough I never EVER have to explain to the patrons what that means. They all pretty much have seemed to just know what I meant.

I cringe at Nay Not. That's one that we may never ever get rid of unfortunately. It's too ingrained into people and an easy 'supercalifragilisticexpealidocious' sorta term.

          I like "Feasting Commons"!

But the proper term for the Court's area is Satan's Frying Pan.

            <--- Lazy Snob.

This season other than throwing in some historical knowledge at a few pre-faire workshops I've done very little to further the cause of historical snobbery.

And having read this thread up to now I want to play pin the tail on the Pasha also! But does it have to be a tail? Why not something similiar to a kick me sign like, "have you seen my pink book?"

What would you suggest as an alternate for "Glade"? The map just lists our area as "Queen's Court", so we could start calling it just about anything.

considoring the location of "Main Stage," why not just call it Dinner Threater?

I tend to use "Royal Pavilion" or "Court Pavilion".

The term "glade" makes no sense unless there are trees forming a glade and your audience has a clue what that is. I have the feeling that most people who use the term don't think of it as "an open space in a forest" (dictionary.com), but "the place where the court congregates".

What's wrong is the misappropriation and eventual redefinition. Sort of like the perversion of the term "shire".

I've been researching customs, practices and superstitions related to pregnancy in Elizabethen times, and incorporating them into my character this season. I get to brag about my bump AND teach the audience members something!

Surely this is just as bad as "Glade", then, yes? Unless there's some sort of actual tent-style pavillion there? Better to call it a glade because the odds of there being trees around are much greater than the court hanging out inside a tent.

You're asking "southerners" about what they are doing. Well, I'm a northerner, but I was at Southern last weekend for my one and only time EVER! (at least up through this season-can't speak to the future yet but no more this year and never been before....AHEM! I digress) While down there, I purchased, with inspiration and direction from my fellow snobs, a cloth jerkin (don't know the material?) and it shall replace the leather one I've been wearing this last season, which is not period, if I'm to be a farmer/cotman this season. I also got some legit "farmer" shoes - ankle high, two buttons, chocolate brown - had them replace metallic buttons with dark antler. Getting my proper garb in order for the remainder of the season as a farmer persona.

                            ~clicks heels, snaps a smart salute~

                            > pa·vil·ion [puh-vil-yuhn]
                            > –noun
                            > 1. a light, usually open building used for shelter, concerts, exhibits, etc., as in a park or fair.
                            > 2. any of a number of separate or attached buildings forming a hospital or the like.
                            > 3. Architecture. a projecting element of a façade, used esp. at the center or at each end and usually treated so as to suggest a tower.
                            > 4. a tent, esp. a large and elaborate one.
                            > 5. a small, ornamental building in a garden.
                            > 6. Also called base. Jewelry. the part of a cut gem below the girdle.
                            > –verb (used with object)
                            > 7. to shelter in or as if in a pavilion.
                            > 8. to furnish with pavilions.

I don't see anything within that definition that applies to any of the court areas that I've seen in the last few years at Casa or Southern, except that one small tent they have at Southern, which is similar to tents they have in other areas, so it's an equal offender as the word "glade".

Just because you SAY it's a pavilion doesn't mean there's a pavilion there. Same thing holds true with calling it a glade. Both may be factually incorrect, depending on the layout of the faire, so what's the difference?

I'm not sure what's wrong with "Glade". I mean OK, so it isn't actually a wooded glade or grove, but there's such a thing as poetic license, especially where courtiers are concerned. and I suppose, if there aren't that many trees, "glade" could be used ironically. :-)

I like Feasting Commons. We have been calling it Cook's Court in St Lukes. Anything is better than "Food Court." Nothing can kill ambiance like feeling you are at the mall when you hear it. Bleah.

An actual proper term would be Cook Street. There's one in Dublin, Ireland which dates from Viking times.

    - I'm learning several new madrigals

    - All of our upper merchant-class shirts are linen, and my husband's shirt is entirely hand sewn; our outer-garments are wool.

-I am going to start referring to the garment formerly known as bloomers as "drawers," which word is period (although it may have meant over-socks).

    - My son's new shoes are Mary Rose reproductions, although size 13 is probably *not* period - even for Venetians (the people, not the pants).

    - When I'm daft Meg, I get confused over whether the new Queen is Mary or Elizabeth (for which I get in trouble, as is consistent with my character). And Meg wears a linen biggins inder her felt hat and a tucked-in apron.

-The Ives servants are working together to plan historical servant gigs and increase the number of people in service in the town.

My own crusade is a few personal things. Item 1 reared its ugly head over at the RPFS tribe and I had to respond.

    1) I'm trying to stamp the phrase "knight's chain" out of the Faire lexicon - unless it refers to a Greater or Lesser George. I hate SCAisms.

    2) I daily prove, by example, that you can wear proper woolen clothes, and your SLEEVES...even when it's 103 degrees.

    3) I'm promoting the use of linen by letting everyone know it's more comfortable, durable and better looking than cotton, and extolling its virtues over cotton when it's super-hot out.

    4) The GAs are trying to prove that you can be "goofy" and "entertaining" but still STAY period. To this end, we have created alter-egos as the "Deptford Devils" - an Elizabethan "street gang."

    5) This one's really pedantic, but that's why I'm a snob. The swordfighting we do for stage combat (the stuff that looks good) would be totally historically accurate for sideswords. Ergo, I carry an actual sidesword at faire.

    6) I try to provide some "edutainment" to everyone, ESPECIALLY the people who show up for our "Ren-Quest" fights, by teaching them the origin of terms like "swashbuckler."

That enough to renew my credentials?
    • Re: Snob check

      Mon, April 28, 2008 - 8:13 PM
oh is this for snob renewal?

I forgot to mention wearing the linen hand sewn biggins under my wool hat. And I TRY to remember to tuck in something resembling an apron whenever I can.

I can't bring myself to hand sew EVERYTHING though. Just the bits that show. No more top stitching by machine though. I make too many costumes to hand sew stuff.

By the way, my snob card hangs behind my gate pass. Everyone gets such a laugh over it when they see it.
