Yep!! You read that correctly Barbie as in the Doll! I remember the news article on this when it came out although I have not seen the doll.

Perhaps the doll was only scheduled for release in Italy or Europe in general?

They do have many versions of Renaissance Barbie on the market, though none of the ones I've seen are very good. .

I have a Barbie customized in a complete fool's costume, with a basket, tankard, sheep, the whole nine yards...I had it done some years ago for one of my guild members. We also had a 'Constable Ken' made for Barky a while back. I used a GI Joe though instead of an actual Ken doll as Ken has left faire and is now living in the Castro with a Cabbage Patch doll named Ramone.

What I learned from that frivolous adventure, is that people that sew little tiny doll clothes must be insane. It was not easy.

          Probably so Molly.

All I know is that the Museum of the Palazzo Riccardi with Mattel, did a major presentation on both the doll and the history of Catherine de Medici, Queen of France. The little that remains of the exhibit online says that they got some serious designers and jewel makers to collorborate in making both the mock up and the initial doll. To be honest this is the only time I have ever seen a book on the exhibit and making of a particular Barbie doll but then, I'm not a doll collector. Still seems pretty darn awesome. :)
