So I am a long time Italian history buff, and I an researching the history of Mediterranean galleys. Does anyone know anything on how the ships were crewed or manned (military)? I have found some good sites on ordinance, rowing styles and deck plans but nothing on the crew and military component of a war galley.

Just an FYI for folks who might be thinking about this event for next April. I believe it conflicts with opening weekend of Southern Faire, but it was the best we could do and not have TOO many conflicts with dates for things. The later we got, the worse it got...

Feel free to ask us about it, here or on our yahoo group. It's just for us, so it's not "acting" per se, though being in character for the full immersion experience is strongly ecouraged. Think of it as, well, ... a SCHOOL! ;^D Yes, it's focused upon the Soldierly Arts of the Elizabethan and Jacobian period, but there are other aspects which may be of interest. Those who portray Gentlemen or Soldiers can gain a great deal of "backstory" from the experience of actually playing soldier in the "Lowe Countries", so consider it well worth your while to invest a weekend in this trailing the Puissant Pike. The stories are great! ("There were we, I shitte ye not...")

If you need to make special arrangements for it, now's the time to start planning. I'm driving down (hauling horses no less) from Washington for it, and we have a group flying in from Bristol Faire in Wisconsin as well, so just about anyone can manage if they start planning for it now.

The School of the Renaissance Soldier is pleased to announce the 2008 dates for the fourth annual "Actions of the Lowe Countries". The event will be held at Gibson Ranch (renaissancesoldier.com/events...h.php), in Sacramento California. The dates will be Friday April 4th through Sunday April 6th.

Actions of the Lowe Countries is a multi-unit, full immersion event for Pike, Shot and Horse (and Camp!), recreating a late 16th, early 17th century military encampment. Last year's event drew over 140 participants from as far afield as Wisconsin, Washington State, Nevada and Southern California.

Additional details will be announced soon, and on-line registration will be available in February. Make your plans now to attend this premier event!
A carrying bag for rapier fencers

Begging the moderator's indulgence, I wanted to tell you guys about my carrying bag for rapier/long weapon fencers. I've been fencing rapier, and other weapons for years--this is the bag I wished I'd been able to get all along, and since no one was making it, I went ahead and had it manufactured. It's a "triangle" style shoulder bag that's biog enough and strong enough to carry rapiers and just about as much equipment as you could want to throw in. It;s over FIVE FEET long, and can be adjusted for shorter weapons (the top of the bag had a velcro closure in case you really need to pack something evel longer--a spear, a quando, maybe your favorite broom), the back is padded, the bottom is reinforced, there are roomy outside pockets big enough for a wet fencing jacket... I think it's really a cool poduct at a good price, and I'm trying to reach more rapier fencers. Come check it out:

question about early Renaissance sailing ships

Dear tribesmen:

I am looking at a 1515 woodcut of the harbor at Antwerp. This panoramic image shows a number of early sixteenth-century sailing ships and galleys that I need to identify. Perhaps I could upload a jpg of this print, or even mail out a copy to anyone interested in trying to figure out what these ships may be.

Also, here's another question: in 1515, who did the rowing on Venetian galleys? Were they slaves, convicts, or volunteers?

Thanks!

The two day seminar taught by Instructors Gareth Thomas, John Lennox, Steve Huff and Steaphen Fick will include history and hands-on practice with such weapons as Cutlass, Sabre, Boarding Axe, Knife, Officers Sword, and even Tomahawk. By request this year both Shipboard Pike work as well as close-quarter unarmed grapples have been added.

Announcing the 2nd Annual West Coast Historical Maritime Combat Seminar

As with last year, the final day will culminate with a simulated boarding action where students will be able to apply what they've learned in a mixed weapon scenario.

Some weapons and masks will be provided, but students are strongly encouraged to bring their own practice weapons and masks, as there will be a limited number on hand. Weapons must be bated, blunted and acceptable for training; singlesticks or 7/8" wooden dowels are also permissible.

6ft. staves of 1 1/4 inches will be allowed as a substitute for pikes.

Soldiers’ Charms & Talismans

Something I wrote years ago for my 17th century group

"No commander, nor private souldier whatsoever, shall use any kind of Idolatry, Witchcraft, or Inchantment of Armes, whereby God is dishonoured, upon pain of death." -From the military regulations of Gustvus Adolphus.

Inspite of admonitions like the one above, soldiers used a number of charms and spells to protect themselves from harm. One of the most widely used soldiers’ charms was a coin with the image of St. George, patron saint of knights and fighting soldiers. This type of talisman developed from the Mansfeld thaler. First minted in 1521, it was commissioned by a Count von Mansfeld and honored his family's patron saint. An imperial officer was said to have been shot in battle, but saved from injury by a Mansfeld thaler he carried. The tale quickly spread and the cost of the thalers rose, thanks to smart middlemen, to 10-20 times the original value. Faith in the legend was renewed when a colonel of the Sachsen family, von Lisbau was supposedly twice saved by a Mansfeld thaler sewn into his clothing.

(A couple of the guys in my old reenactment group visibly sewed a large washer, or disk into the breast of their coats/doublets as if it were a coin there to protect them)

During the 30 Years War, and the wars against the Turks it is said that all officers and even some common soldiers wore these thalers. Eventually, demand was so great that some businessman started minting a special St. George talisman. These talismans were of various sizes, available in silver, gilt, or bronze, but all one basic desing. On one side was St. George on horseback, thrusting his lance at a dragon with an inscription: "S. GEORGUS. EQUITUM PATRONUS." (St. George, protector of knights) The reverse side had a ship with a taut sail on a rough sea and Christ asleep on the deck with two terrified apostles. A wind blows through a small cloud into the sail. The inscription: "IN TEMPESTATE SECURITAS. (Safety, or security in the storm). This type of charm may have been part of what was covered by Gustavus Aldolphus’ regulation mentioned above when referring to as "idolatry" - the worshiping, or praying to a saint was disapproved by Protestants.

In addition to talismans, were ceremonies and charms to give weapons magical power, or protect the user: To overcome anyone with your sword you could take the tongue of a rat and the heart of a bat, bind them together with red silk thread and have them inserted into your sword hilt; “you will be victorious everywhere.”

Or, Have inserted into the hilt of your sword a piece of the spoke of wheel on which an executioner has broken the bones of a poor sinner; every opponent will immediately break his rapier when fencing with you.

For cutting, thrusting, and gunfire - Take the skull of a man who has been hanged, or broken on the wheel, that is covered with moss when you find it; remember where it is and leave it lying there. The following day go to the same spot and place the skull so that you can take the moss off it: then on Friday before daybreak, go to the place where the skull lies and say these words: "I (name) beseech thee at this moment Thou, my Lord Jesus Christ, son of the pure Virgin Mary, to assist me in my purpose and help me bind the hands of all my enemies and help me overwhelm everything they use for thrusting and everything they have made of iron; Lord Jesus, son of Mary, help me in this purpose, In the name of the Father .. etc. Amen." Pull off the moss, wrap it in a kerchief and have it sewn into your jacket under the left shoulder, but so that you do not feel where it is; wear it always and no one will be able to wound you either by shot, cut, or thrust.

Italian Renaissance Warfare Question

For years I have seen references to the use of blowguns as weapons of war in Italy during the Renaissance. I have never been able to track down the source for these quotes. If anyone can refer me to such a source, I'd be most appreciative.

Reenactments

I find the subject of reenactments fascinating. I've been attending Renaissance Faires for about 15 years, and they always seem to have a reenactment of some kind, even if it's just a joust or a duel. One of the reasons why I enjoy the larger faires is because they often have better, or at least more impressive, reenactments.

I've been branching out, and went to the Civil Ware reenactment in Vista, and the Miramar air show (which had an excellent reenactment of a special forces raid). At each one of these, from the joust in Ojai to the duels between knights in san Diego to the Civil war battle in Vista, I've enjoyed myself and come away with some interesting knowledge.

So now I am wondering, besides the obvious renaissance and similar faires, what other reenactments are available in the Southerm to central california area?

1616 LANARIO Italian Edn on WAR IN FLANDERS
SCARCE details SPANISH MILITARY ACTIONS

Scarce Italian Edition of this survey of the War in Flanders (precedes the Spanish edition by 7 years). The work details Spanish military actions in Flanders from 1559 to 1607, under Philip II and Philip III.
Lanario y Aragón (b. Naples, 1589) notes that he had had served in Flanders on the royal council and had read everything available about the wars there: "vio a todos los que han escrito dellas, las relaciones mas particulares, y papeles secretos."

Las guerras de Flandes includes a brief reference to the desire of D. Carlos (Philip II's son and heir) to go to Flanders against his father's orders. D. Carlos, who died under house arrest at the age of 23, became the subject of increasingly romantic tales, the most famous of which is Schiller's Don Carlos.

Costumed Characters for Short Film

Hi,

I'm new to this world, so hello to all and thanks for taking the time to read this.

I'm producing a short film about the seedy underbelly of competitive eating, and I'm looking for some extroverted, costumed characters who would like to appear in our grand finale final scene.

On March 6th and 7th at the Castro Theatre, from 10 am to 4 pm both days, we are staging 'The World Pie Eating Championships'. And I am hoping to get some great characters in great costumes to appear as contestants. So if you have a great costume, especially if you are a troupe of people with matching outfits, and would like to be in a bizarre short film, I'd love to talk to you.

I'm sad to say we don't have the money to pay anyone, but we have a great photographer working on the project and will get you some cool photos. We'll feed you, treat you well, and it should be a fun two days.

If you are interested, please email me at nathan@numbersandpsaces.com, and I'll tell you all about the project. And as I said, I'm new to this scene, so I'd appreciate any advice anyone might have for me.

Thanks,
St. Columcille's ... Patron Saint of the Warriors of the Red Hand

Came across this article written by Ken Concannon following the release of Gibson's "Passion of the Christ". I liked the historical detail and depth of the article and thought I would share it with you all. Of the reasons I chose Columcille as our guilds patron saint, was that I saw a parallel betwen himself and Hugh O'Neill;
Both Irish, Northern Irish, both winning stunning military victories that in the end provided no real solutions, both championing the Catholic Faith (though admittedly O'Neill managed to unite the Irish and Columcille more or less caused divide with his war), both responsible for the deaths of many men, both imposed self-exile and never returned to their native land.
Anyway, here is the article. I hope you enjoy it as I did:

St. Columcille — Ireland's First 'White Martyr'

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Ken Concannon
Special to the Herald
(From the issue of 7/1/04)

Most people don't know it but Mel Columcille Gerard Gibson, the man who brought "The Passion of the Christ" to the big screen earlier this year, and stirred up a hornet's nest in the process, is named for two first millennium Irish St.s, Mel and Columcille.

Gibson is well named. Both St.s Mel and Columcille (pronounced Kolumkil) were deeply religious and devoted to their faith, as is, apparently, Gibson. St. Mel was one of the handful of missionaries who accompanied St. Patrick to Ireland in the fifth century, participated in the conversion of Ireland to Christianity, and later became a bishop in Ireland. Beyond that little is known about that holy man. St. Columcille, however, is a different story.

Like his namesake, Columcille, whose feast we celebrate this month, was a deeply devout but somewhat mercurial character. Regarded, along with Patrick and Brigid, as one of Ireland’s three great patron saints, Columcille is generally considered to be the first of Ireland's "white martyrs," the missionaries who, as a form of sacrifice and penance, exiled themselves from their beloved Erin to bring Christianity to the barbarian tribes that had overrun the rest of Europe.

Prince, poet, scholar, scribe, priest, monk, warrior, missionary - Columcille was also, like Gibson, something of a celebrity in his time. Born in 521 AD as Crimthann, prince of Clan Conail, he later became known among the Irish by his monastic nickname Columcille (Dove of the Church), but is frequently referred to by historians by his Romanized name, Columba.

Columcille (my preference), in addition to being all that has been described above, was something of a trend setter. He was the first white martyr, the first Irish missionary, the first loser in a copyright case, and according to legend, the first person in recorded history to encounter the Loch Ness monster. A man of many talents and almost unlimited energy, Columcille could have become Ireland’s high king had he chosen that path. Educated in both the pre-Christian bardic tradition and the Christian abbey of Clonard (on the river Boyne in what is now county Meath), he chose instead to devote his energies to the Christian priesthood. He was ordained at Clonard at the age of 25 and spent the next several years traveling throughout Ireland preaching and establishing monasteries – 41 in all, among them Derry, Durrow and Kells.

Columcille's preaching and monastery-making in Ireland came to an abrupt end when he was about 42. His love of scholarship and beauty, his prodigious skill as a scribe, his unlimited energy, and a scorching case of bad judgment all combined to set the stage for the first copyright case and his ultimate exile as the first white martyr and Irish missionary.

Columcille's mentor and teacher at Clonard, St. Finnian, returned from a pilgrimage to Rome with a beautifully decorated copy of St. Jerome's Psalter -- the Book of Psalms translated into Latin by St. Jerome in the fourth century, supposedly the only one in Ireland. Columcille wanted to make a copy; Finnian said no.

Being Irish and an aristocrat, Columcille had never been especially comfortable with the word "no." So the priest/prince, without Finnian's permission, borrowed the Psalter and copied it anyway. When Finnian discovered that Columcille had surreptitiously copied the Psalter, Finnian sued for return of the copy as stolen property. The issue was ultimately resolved by the High King of Ireland, Diarmait O'Carroll, who ruled in Finnian's favor, declaring: "To every cow her calf; to every book its copy."

Losing the first copyright case in history did not endear Columcille to Diarmait, and when one of Columcille's followers, a son of the King of Connaught (one of the four provinces of Ireland), was killed by Diarmait's soldiers in an unrelated matter, Columcille/Crimthann, Prince of Clan Conail, had had enough. The impetuous monk rallied his clan, and with the aid of Connaught, waged war on the High King, taking the field against Diarmait and his army at a place called Cuildremne in County Sligo. The battle was one-sided; by the time it was over Diarmait had suffered a humiliating defeat and 3,000 warriors lay dead.

But for the "Dove of the Church," it was a hollow victory. Realizing what he had done Columcille mourned the loss of so many Irishman, and although he had not actually drawn a sword, felt remorse for his part in their demise. He also realized that because of the battle, he had become an immediate embarrassment to himself, his faith and his country.

In order to redeem himself Columcille accepted an extraordinary penance -- exile. The penance required him to leave his beloved Ireland forever, and in his exile to bring as many souls to the faith as had perished at Cuildremne. In this manner Columcille became the first white martyr, sailing away from Ireland into the white sky of morning to an unknown destiny on a foreign shore.

Departing from Derry with 12 disciples in the year 563 AD, Columcille sailed northward toward the Hebrides off the coast of what is now Scotland, eventually landing on the island of Iona, which was then part of the Irish kingdom of Dal Riada. There he built an abbey on land given to him by his kinsman, the king of Dal Riada. Using Iona as his base of operations, Columcille set about converting the pagan inhabitants of the Scottish part of the British mainland.

Generally credited with the conversion of Scotland, Columcille's influence as a missionary during his own lifetime extended throughout the British Isles and perhaps as far north as Iceland. Iona became the model for many Irish abbeys founded outside Ireland. Columcille, the most respected Irishman of his time, became the model for all the white martyrs who ventured after him - and, to a certain extent, for one filmmaker some 1,500 years later.

Feel free to add your own pictures ... right now it's pretty heavily Irish becasue ... well ... I'm Irish and so is the Guild I run. Please add your own flavor and promote your events ... ie. Ren Military Symposium, Workshops, Faires, Events, etc.

Stuff that would be great to see is military tactics ... pike & shot formations ... battle info ... etc etc etc ....

Slan go foil!

I'll be getting a first hand perspective on some of the battle sites in Ireland. Jonny has gifted me with a Lufthansa ticket and he and I, his girl Wendy and possibly Krista will be going out in November. I have emailed the author of "Tyrone's Rebellion", who is a lecturer on Irish history at University College Cork and he wants to meet up with us to chat up some of the history!
So, expect some pictures soon.
That is, if I can get a copy of my damned birth certificate so i can get my passport. DOH!

Introductions

I see a lot of people have joined this Tribe already. I think it would be a good idea to start off with introductions. I know at least one of you has put your history and interests up here. Let's hear from the rest of you.

Here is mine:

My name is Daniel, and I have been performing at Renaissance Faires since 1993. I started at RPFS and have attended many events including: Black Point, RPFN, Stafford, Placerville, Ojai, Vegas Age of Chivalry, Arizona Faire, San Diego (Balboa Park), Escondido, Tahoe, Fair Oaks, and will be with my entire new 16th century Irish guild at Golden Gate. We plan on hitting Casa and Hanford this year as well if at all possible.

I started off in a Scottish guild at Southern Faire but wanted to play Irish since so much of my famliy is. I hit upon a new guild at it's inception "The Army of O'Neill" and helped Thomas bring it to realization. We joined with Saint Michaels South and while gaining a level of legitimacy, we had to sacrifice some historical accuracy and remove some of the very things from our costumes that identified us as Irish. While in that guild, I rose to the rank of Captain of O'Neill's forces and held the position of "Battle Pageant Coordinator" for three years. I was in league with a representative from every group that took the field at Southern.

Recently, I moved to Northern California and have started a new Irish guild based out of the Greater Sacramento area called The Warriors of the Red Hand, in hopes of building something similar and not having to sacrifice the history in order to be able to exist at events. Eventually, I want the guild to grow into a military based group with a large contingent of shot, pike, and footmen. We all have a love for music, so that will undoubtedly colour the guild. I love to interact with other groups and have made quite a few alliances with other Irish guilds including St. Kennoch's, Patrick's, O'Neill, QME, and Zaks guild as well as some Scottish groups.
When I have met a few other guilds and found a group of people that I can trust and know I can work with to put on battles, I will be more than happy to coordinate with them and work towards some historical battle reenactments. until then, I am refraining from just adding my guild to battle pageants due to the weekend warrior syndrome and the poorly planned battle reenactments I have been witness to since I have been up here. In short, I won't put my group in a situation that is poorly planned or executed.

Otherwise, I don't have much else to say until the guild has gotten it's feet wet. Golden Gate will be our first OFFICIAL event, despite the fact that we meandered about Fair Oaks.

I am a Eberhauer Landsknecht from the Kingdom of Atenveldt. I am very new to Tribe, and since I have been here, I have found a great meny tribes to join. I am amused by some of them and amazed at others. The SCA has been called my home for about 9 years now. My first Estrella war was Estrella war 12. Every year it gets bigger and better, and every year we get stronger and more structured as a Hardsute Fighting Unit. My name is Lord Wilhelm Gebauer von Stadt Konigsberg. I thank you for letting me join your tribe, and I hope I can make some new friends here. I have found my home in the SCA Tribes. Until we cross paths at war, Blesseed be and Hail Landsknecht!
