***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 11:08 PMThanks Ryan-O. Nothing I can confirm first hand, but I can tell you that Stoneys is no longer the Venue for Yuri's Night 2008. Wow, that sounded like a political sidestep, didn't it? Well, just trying to keep it about the Big We.
For this reason, WE HAVE CHANGED LOCATIONS for our first planning mixer to the basement of The Red Rock Lounge on Sierra Street, this Friday, 8:00 PM to discuss things like errrrrr Yuri's venue! 8-)
All the best to you warm, fuzzy freaks on a chilly and hug-worthy evening. Please pipe in here and let us space peeps know if you plan to attend.
Hey A_delle: Please bring your balls (not-so inside joke). -

Fri, January 4, 2008 - 2:23 PMJelly just posted on the Reno list that we are postponing the meeting until next Friday. Tribe was down, so he hasn't posted here yet.
So...
meeting postponed to Friday, Jan 11 8pm Red Rock.
I won't be there cuz I'll be in New York at a performing arts festival/conference... Yipee!!!
Sorry I can't make it. -

Fri, January 4, 2008 - 8:15 PMThanks, Jess. That's confirmed, and the Red Rock Lounge was happy to accommodate. Here in the Sparks Vistas it's 7.5 inches on the ground already. I just shoveled it up and cracked open a Red Stripe. Let's all have a drink together here on Tribe tonight! -

Fri, January 11, 2008 - 11:22 PMThanks and big wet sloppy kisses to all who attended. It's easy to see just from the turnout and excitement that this is going to be the best recompression event ever and as Kernul Killbuck said "Put Reno on the map at 'Burner Central'"! -

Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 10:33 AMyep - a great turnout, and if you can go by the skate park today, please do so.
open ground skatepark
2450 valley road - setback a bit off of the road, blue roof, towards the end of valley closer to mccarran).
and if anyone has another venue suggestion, now's the time!
it seems as if its an "either - or" scenario between skate and underground, both with pros/cons.
other locales previously considered but ruled out due to time//cost//size constraints:::
livestock
lawlor
the stadium-(south meadows gym)
frank sinata showroom(cal neva-crystal bay)
carano family convention rooms(legacy-eldorado)
convention center
green room
art space on 4th
zephyr
skoosh - as awesome as susan is, it wouldnt be fair to even ask to subject her business to the abuse that comes from..........space.
stoneys was the orignal choice, but that is no longer a venue, and even though it may be again w/some new people, we're just about out of time to seriously consider it as a reality from a planning perspective.
so that leaves underground or the open ground, or.......?? (or someones as yet undisclosed warehouse....anyone?anyone?)
i will be making a trip to the skate today, and get as many questions that i could not answer last night answered and posted.
so please consensus asap so's we can roll out the launch pads.......
this show will be a burner, and i'm very excited to see what everybody does!

Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 12:08 PMjust returned from skatepark.
the outside def. gets my vote.
i can see giant fire, metal art cars and rvs even now,
the inside would have to be a 4hr set-up, and the terms are basically the same as verbalized last night, so i'm in the "lets try it" camp.
there is a huge fenced area on the right side of the building that could be used for__________.
we could have all day to do the outdoor installations, and their removal could be dealt with over the whole of sunday.
indoors we still have to be out by 11am, and
there is a no-smoking indoor policy, (which i cant imagine why in a place full of lumber).
multiple areas for decor, at its peak the ceilings arch to 20ft.
i like the ramps and the defined areas they create - with teams working in specific areas i feel we can get the interior done.
and on a personal level, it would work perfectly for our screens.
it would have to be well-organized mos def. -

The Venue... In space!
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 1:46 PMYes indeedy. There was expression last night about the hassle of the limited set up time. Major contributers at last year's event like Titwi and Pinemom expressed their very valid concerns. We'll need to nail it in the contract so we are not delayed one more minute than agreed. Let's use the ramps to our advantage so people will not need to put up so many temporary walls as last year. We could call the coves between them "craters" and if we get a map of them and number them off, it will be really easy for people to find placement and go to town on them. The tops of them make such great go-go dancing platforms! It reminds me of the Lost In Space episode when they were on the planet where they "just can't stop dancing!".
As for non-smoking- that means people will want to come and go a lot more so we may consider bright colored wrist bands instead of hand stamps for fast security pass-through.
Congratulations to Kevan for volunteering to do the outdoor chill room. -

Re: The Venue... In space!
Sat, January 12, 2008 - 2:20 PMIf I can't smoke inside I'm not coming.
haha.,..that rules.
The smoking area has been the fenced in area at the raves I've been to there. One thing to consider is BATHROOMS. Apparently that has been an issue at the all ages shows there.
There are also 2 small rooms off to the left side and i have seen at the raves i have been to there that they create another "room" off to the right of the room for more djs.
plus we should have security always out there watching cars. there has been vandalism there in the past.
we should try and do another mixer there soon.

I just stopped by there (around midnight) on my way home, and, wow, although I didn't go in, I could see inside, as there were bicyclists going at it inside -- looks great, ideal, in fact, cratered, ...in space ! And the outside, plenty.....of parking on both sides of the building, in fact down several hundred feet along the right (south side), and the out front is ideal especially for I am imagining major fire stuff -- hey RyanO, what about setting up the Shiva Vista Stage and all the disciples etc out front, i.e. if we can in fact have all day to set up, and all day to take down !? PLEASE !!!
All-in-all, sounds great to me, too ! Thanks ! -

Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Tue, January 15, 2008 - 8:14 PMWOW!!! Looks like a lot has been accomplished since I have been away. Glad to hear the venue has been decided. We checked it out yesterday online (we're still in NYC), and it looks like there are a lot of opportunities for making seperate chill spaces and dance spaces! I, even as a smoker, like the idea of the venue being non smoking.
A few questions....
Do they charge? If so, how much?
What is max occupancy indoors?
Do they have security (I assume so since its been mentioned, but just double-checking)?
Can we really get everything set up indoors in 4 hours? We had some trouble getting it all done at underground for Decompose...
How many porta-potties should we get? Can we get any inside to help with the lack of potties in there?
Is there a stage, or do we need to makeshift one? Or will the ramps work for that?
Do we need to get tables and get other seating areas in there? What kind of cost are we looking at for that?
Can we attach things to the walls? What can we do to decorate?
Can we get an indoor fire permit? (i.e. will the owners let us burn inside?)
Can we hang silks from the rafters/ceiling?
Is there going to be a staging/performers area for changing, etc?
Are we going to have food again?
Can we get stripper poles in there?
Is this going to be a 21+ event? (I hope so!)
How does the bar/drinking work? Do they have a bar? Do we need to provide one and obtain a temporary liquor license?
Ok, now that I've accosted y'all with a bunch of questions that have probably already been answered (no one posted any minutes!)... please let me know! April is going to come QUICK so I'd like to get some stuff hashed out ASAP.

Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 10:50 AMi'm in a perpetual timewarp Beneath the Planet of the Apes.......(in space)
>Do they charge? If so, how much? <
$600 cleaning deposit due at contract signing-(and we should // will // better get this back, moopers)
$1000 due 2 weeks prior to event
$1000 due by midnite during event
>What is max occupancy indoors?<
"officially" 410 - but thats with bikes and skateboards-they average over 600 for all ages raves held there since late 2006
>Do they have security<
rec. that we hire out a couple of their regular sec.staff @ $10 each /hour - to be used in addition to BRR "volunteers"
>Can we really get everything set up indoors in 4 hours?<
we have all day for the outside set-up, which should be the bulk(larger pieces, fire, rvs, portas)
>We had some trouble getting it all done at underground<
this isnt the UG, so we'll have to manage ourselves as diy as possible, and ask more questions earlier (just like you did here)
and fewer day of questions/waiting for answers should mean that since we have practiced for the big game, put me in coach, we're ready!
indoors the respective crews need to be READY, and with jellis "crater assignment plan", it should go as smoothly........
(i'm legally obliged to say: "in.space.")
for the sound / visuals, we can name that tune in 3hours.59minutes.53seconds....
it will be a tight schedule for sure, but we can secure the camp before the storm - yeah?
>How many porta-potties should we get? Can we get any inside to help with the lack of potties in there?<
we need to rent a min. of 2 each trailer w/ portas, and they stay outside, since my aroma should be enough indoors for all to enjoy,
that + i want no part of indoor portas.
>Is there a stage, or do we need to makeshift one? Or will the ramps work for that?<
tops of ramps are to be used by their respective "crater campers", except for the one in the center of the room for the main sound/lighting
no makeshift stage - no time,no money, it can be worked around.
>Do we need to get tables and get other seating areas in there? What kind of cost are we looking at for that? <
there are a few tables/chairs and an assortment of couches indoors - nothing outside, and not renting any additional as far as i know
> Can we attach things to the walls? What can we do to decorate?<
there are a ton of leftover g.wires hanging from the rafters, will support alot - the walls are ok as long as we dont pound lots of holes.
the top arch of the a-frames are about 20ft high. we will have an 8ft ladder in addition to the one there.
>Can we get an indoor fire permit? (i.e. will the owners let us burn inside?) <
doubtful, what with the "no smoking indoor" policy, but will find out
>Can we hang silks from the rafters/ceiling?<
yes, as long as they dont interfere w/sprinkler system
>Is there going to be a staging/performers area for changing, etc?<
we can make that happen....the destructor will come as one of the prechosen forms, gozar the gozarian, stay-puft marshmellow man?
>Are we going to have food again?<
burrito? - this needs to be sorted out a bit more...
>Can we get stripper poles in there?<
yes
>Is this going to be a 21+ event? (I hope so!) <
yes
>How does the bar/drinking work?
"a nun, a rabbi, and a funker-chunker with a balloon for a hand walk into a bar............."
Do they have a bar?
nope-in-deedly-doodly,flanders
Do we need to provide one and obtain a temporary liquor license? <
we supply/run our own bar set-up - the venue gets to sell water bottles(cheap)//sodas - still working out the other part of question

>Can we hang silks from the rafters/ceiling?<
At two of the events we've done, the fire marshal had a tizzy about any vertically hanging material that was not fire rated or sprayed with fire retardant. Anybody have leads on this?
There are a lot of worthy causes and fund raisers going on. Shiva Vista's 2/2 the most imminent. Killbuck and I are bringing Mantis there to support their efforts.
An announcement that I made at the meeting and want to re-state here is just what the proceeds of this Yuri's Night event (if any) go to after we pay our expenses. They are, in equal 1/3 shares, the following Burning Man 2008 art installations:
"Jackbot" by Robotronia
"Dead Fidel" by Apokiliptika
"Zsu Zsu: The Crybaby Drama Queen" by the Zsu Zsu Crew
Anybody who wants to put on a fundraiser to help finance their art projects is encouraged to do so, as we surly don't have an exclusive on events. I want to thank in advance all of you who are supporting this event and bringing your art to help our art. Please don't hesitate to ask us to bring our art to your event in the future. -

Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 4:15 PMJust want to put my big toe in here, wondering out loud, unless someone is already in mind for doing all of the bar, please include me as the one going out and getting all the booze for the bar -- as you all probably know by now, I work for Southern Wine & Spirits, largest wine & spirits distributor in the state, and we carry lots of beer too. I also know most of the salesmen for the other distributors, too. So, getting together with you the producers, and whoever will be the bartenders, and getting together a list of boozes needed, I can then get most of everything at wholesale prices -- if not better than wholesale prices. I will probably also donate a bit of free beer, and maybe a bottle or two of spirits. If needs be, I'm willing to pay for all the booze up-front, so long as I am compensated at the end of the night. I figure also at the end of the night we can determine what to do with the leftover booze? Mind you I am not volunteering to bartend, though ;-) -

Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 4:21 PMRe: food
We all sort of discussed this at last weeks mixer, just saying that I found the potluck at Reno Decompose, as well as at Skoosh Recompression parties of the past, a great way to go. Overall at Reno Decompose I found it to be a success, particularly because a variety of food was available at-will throughout the night. Some of us need a meal and a half for a whole night of fun, particularly dancing, and the amount and variety of food provided through a potluck just about does. With a few volunteers (including me), is not a huge pain the ass to care for and clean up, either. And it's free ! And I can't think of any reason not to? Can we, do you feel we can do this again, pretty please? -

Do you think there is enough seating available? Nothing like enough lounging in places other than on the floor. Is a chair, couch drive necessary?
What sort of actual "bar" is gonna happen, you think? Do we need to supply, make one? Bring (more) stools or other? -
-
Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Wed, January 16, 2008 - 8:40 PMthere are a multitude of ramps to lounge on, as far as seating goes.
I think the "bar" should just be a place to serve da booze, not so much a hangout zone.

Thu, January 17, 2008 - 1:30 PMTrue that! I'd like to take a trip to the desert hot springs just to get my bones thawed!
Certainly, Nathan, we'd love to have you coordinate the bar. GT: Are you going to get the city permit for that?
As for food, I like it and sometimes eat it. It's just not where my special skill set is, including clean up, more trash to haul, etc.
One of the things that worked for Yuri's night was having different foods served at the individual theme camps (crater camps) so people would mingle more and take the real tour. Finger food works great for that, and each camp is responsible to clean up their own.
Thoughts? Suggestions? Filled out questionares? Somebody do a PowerPoint presentation-- quick! -

True. But as for myself I didn't get to eat much, at all, at Yuri's Night 2007, due to my dietary lifestyle...Not hearing it was going to be a potluck, but that theme camps were going to provide food, I looked forward to mowwing as I may -- to not see much volume or variety that I could. Not knocking anyone or theme camp, AT ALL, mind you ! Just saying that announcing it as a potluck, and of course provding the platform for folks to place their food, i.e. over and beyond what theme camps will do on their own, will likely bring in the volumes and varieties of food to feed me, myself, and I, and of course everyone else. For Reno Decompose we seemed to have enough food (anyone, anyone have other info, Bueller?), and there wasn're really anything left over at all. We also put a call out for tables, so space was sufficient for the food. Same goes with utensils. Clean up was not a problem. I am volunteering to bring some food, a table or two, and to help clean up, and I feel that again as at Reno Decompose others will get jazzed about potlucking too?

If this would be the case, then, sorry, I don't quite have the deep enough pockets to donate that kind of volume of booze, unless you guys are thinking of covering the cost of the booze from the door cover?
I was under the impression that getting a few volunteers to bartend (not to mention, for tips) wouldn't be a problem, at all. I was also wondering out loud, that the bar would charge ( MIND YOU, A FAIR PRICE) for drinks -- not only would the money generated from folks buying their drinks, pay back the costs for the booze, it would also generate more funds for the event itself -- i.e. generate more funds for the 3 art projects -- probably A WHOLE HECK OF A LOTTA money at that! Add in the factors a) that some folks (like me) like cocktails, b) don't want to make them, themselves, and/or c) don't know how to make them good enough -- radical self-reliance aside.
As for enough chairs or couches, I just will add that even those of us who dance many many hours like to sit, mingle, or makeout -- i.e. lounge -- on something other than ground or ramp, occasionally ;-p -

Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 5:29 PMOh, and, um, so I still have A LOT of liquor gift set glasses here in my apartment from the holidays, which I was planning on giving to friends...
Seems like they could very well be used for the bar at the event? Shot glasses, whiskey glasses, and some martini glasses. Buying regular plastic cups for other drinks, and encouraging folks to bring their own, for the rest?
Which leads to the additional question blurping around in my psyche, beyond what sort of bar there is going to be, is there a sink with running water available at where the bar is going to be, so glasses can be cleaned for further use that night? -

Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 9:12 PMYes, I dig d6 to mean it is not a hosted bar but indeed a cash bar. I agree that it's a good revenue generator for the cause-- just don't build a video poker machine into your bar top there, JackBot!
I liked your "bring your own cup" promotion for Decompose, Nathan. If we all carribinar them to our space belts, we'll be good to go... IN SPACE!
Guess what! We just got mentioned on the international Yuri's Night Website in their press release! "...areas as diverse as... Sparks Nevada..." . I corrected them that although I live in Sparks, it's a Reno event. Dig it at:
www.yurisnight.net/2008/new...-page.php
and feel free to order your own Yuri's Night party pack. The one I got last hear had some great trinkets and was worth the T-shirt alone for the $25 donation.
Cheers! -

Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Fri, January 18, 2008 - 7:39 AMHere's an idea on the bar vs. money issue
To make it wonderfully easy. We should do the ticket system, 1 for a beer, 2 for a cocktail, 3 for a double etc....
Then all the $ stays in one place, ie the door take area. Peeps can purchase their tickets when they come in, come back for more tickets when they need them, so you dont need a cash register, just a tear the ticket by the bartender.
And for ease of Bar stock, go down to the simple,
rum,
vodka,
scotch/bourbon,
whisky
tequila
Jager
7up
coke
diet something
soda
tonic
lemons
limes
salt
K.I.S.S.
Maybe even skip cups all together...as we all usually bring our own.
Have a stack of cups at the door for "PURCHASE", say... $ 0.50, have sharpies available for them to do their name and artwork.
(keeps people from throwing them on the floor, then asking for another, free = moop)
No cup...no drinky!
or a shot pour in the mouth...or on the body...
woops, weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.... got carried away!
You know...this COULD be alot of fun this way!
And yes...Im in for a barshift too! -

Yes, I was figuring on sort of a basic skeleton of boozes, mixers, sodas, and comdiments + ice, and a few different draft and bottle/can beers to go on, too. We'll have to probably get a few different kinds of vodkas, whiskies, etc, as, well, folks have their tastes, some like me really only like the higher end vodka, while some are good to go with the lower priced stuff -- no way around it, gotta be pleasing enough, imo.
So, I was talking with d6 earlier, and he is going to look more into what sort of bars will play out at the club, soon. We may be able to use their tables, we may even have a room or two just for a bar(s). Hopefully we will also at least get to use one good sink with running water for drinks and cleaning. Hopefully we won't have to borrow or construct a bar(s) of some sorts.
Aside from blanketing all over the place through publicity, for folks to bring their own cups to the event, I too really like the idea of buying plastic cups for sale / rent at the door for large drinks like beer, Shelly ! Like, buy a whole bunch of those large, reusable cheap plastic cups, cups primo for the playa ! Cuts down on trash. Aside, like I was saying, I got a whole lotta of liquor glasses to use too, can't quite get the feel for a shot other than with a shot glass, imo. Doesn't seem like a big enough hassle having them in addition, too -- i.e. just for the cocktails and shots.
More re the trash issue, I'm pretty sure Sabra and I would like to marshall in a newer and improved recycling system of sorts for this event...? Please..

Ok. Just saying that a lounge area of some kind, somewhere, inside, to chill a bit, mingle, make out, is a very good thing, no? Or you all thinking theme camps are the lounge areas?! -

Sat, January 19, 2008 - 10:15 AMI agree that we need a bar,but can we also add a booze pot luck or allow individuall theme camps/participants to bring booze cooler style for your typical playa bar gifting style?
I just see this as a way of sharing the load/making things more interactive.
Thoughts? -

In my limited understanding as a participant of a bar-team that seems to be coalescing, it seems to me that, what with the costs affiliated with this event (as listed above in this thread by d6), the fundraising aspect could really use the kind of money generated with having a bar(s). It seems to me if folks are allowed to bring their own booze, and booze for others, all in all playa-style, then the funds generated for the projects would probably fall drastically -- unless of course there is some kind of mass-in-your-face publicity, that much of not all of the door cover is going to basic costs for the event, and that any funds to go to the 3 projects -- very much a goal (among several) of the event, itself -- would be raised largely if not soley by "please buy drinks rather than drink for free."
Having said this, I would like to see folks besides myself being able to donate booze to the bar(s), with a point of publicity behind this, too, in the fundraising endeavor for these 3 projects?

Re: ***Location Change*** First planning mixer Friday 1/4
Sat, January 19, 2008 - 12:45 PMdepending on how busy it is...that can be worked out. if it gets too nutz better to have a person experienced get people serviced quicker.
I'd say the theme camps should steer clear of giving away booze. Non-alch is fine but consider the cost of this endeavor. The bar on this event could make it an actual benefit or just a "party."

Re: 1st Yuri's Night Mixer
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 3:24 PMEarlier today at the Studio on 4th, with Kahele, d6, GT, Jess, and myself present, we talked some more regarding the possible bar scenarios for Yuri's Night, and here are a few things that seemed to make sense for further consideration:
-Two bars, one devoted entirely to beer
-Kahele noted in her experience that money rather than tickets for drinks at the bar seems to be indispensible, due to the shiftier value of tickets and wide-range of drink prices, as well as because tips for the bartenders is mostly made where actual money is (ex)changed
-People "Please bring your own cups" be a priority through publicity, and the only plastic cups provided at the event being reusable and for sale
-

Re: 1st Yuri's Night Mixer
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 4:17 PMI am in agreement with what we talked about earlier today. It will be easier to have cash at the bars, it will also generate some much-needed change throughout the evening for the door and/or bars.
Also, it was brought to my attention that we may be incorporating SVP meetings into the Yuri's night mixers (?). It was also brought to my attention that these meetings will now be held on the second Friday of every month. This constitutes one HUGE problem for myself and Controlled Burnerz/SVPerz, and that is that Controlled Burn holds its monthly members' meetings on the second Friday of every month. Can we please move these to the first or third Fridays of the month? Pretty please? With sugar and other treatz on top?

Re: 1st Yuri's Night Mixer
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 5:53 PMJust thought I would throw this out there, while it is currently in my attention:
I became aware that prohibition against absinthe being imported into the United States has been, finally, ended. In fact, what drew this to my attention was finding out that the company I work for now carries what appears to be a very, very good version, known as Lucid Absinthe Superieure -- yes, it is from France, and apparently the only genuine version out here in the states, thusfar.
Why I bring this up here, now, is that it seems to me that serving it at the bar at Yuri's Night would be a REALLY good idea ! Some may say, "of course," but the only thing is that it is pricey -- around $45 - $50 per bottle -- equating to I guess $10 or so a drink according to average over-the-counter rates. I for one would pay for a drink of it, maybe even two, but do you all feel it would be a worthwhile investment?
Here is a link to this liqueur (note this is NOT a plug for my company, but, once in the site, move your mouse around the page...).

Re: 1st Yuri's Night Mixer
Sun, January 20, 2008 - 5:58 PMOpes, one article mischaracterized what has actually happened re prohibition of absinthe. This from the website is more accurate representation of the facts:
>>>Lucid is the first genuine Absinthe made with real Grande Wormwood to be legally available in the United States in over 95 years. Lucid is made with a full measure of Grande Wormwood (Artemesia absinthium) as well as other fine European herbs....Wormwood is not illegal as long as the finished product meets applicable standards for content. We found that by adhering to the strict techniques used over a century ago, the result was not only a genuine, historically accurate product, but a product that also happens to meet US requirements relating to alcoholic beverages. -
