Yuri's Night / Reno-Compression Party

public - created 02/22/07
Visit event website at www.MutantVehicle.com/Yuri.htm As we Reno-Compress for our time on the playa this year, Cosmo-Naughties of many ages and camps will descend upon the humble burg of Reno, Nevada. There, the launch codes will be entered for an evening of space dance and electronica chill music, interactive art, light shows, mini-theme camps, and friendly people. But when the celebration marks something as extraordinary as the dawn of human spaceflight, expect a HUGE party...IN SPACE!!!

That party is Yuri’s Night, celebrated in dozens of cities around the world, on ALL seven continents. Yes, even Antarctica occasionally throws a Yuri’s Night party, and residents of the International Space Station have even been known to join in on the fun. But who is this Yuri, and why are thousands of people worldwide celebrating him?

Yuri’s Night is the global celebration of human space travel, held annually on April 12, (although ours will be on Saturday, April 14th.) Yuri’s Night commemorates both the historic first flight of Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961, as well as the launch of the first Space Shuttle (STS-1) exactly 20 years later. This year we’re celebrating the 46th anniversary of Yuri’s flight and the 26th anniversary of STS-1, along with that Reno-compression feeling you've had at previous Burner parties like the ones at Skoosh.
