YYYYYESSS!!!
Thanks to all who turned out for a good time. That was a great ride -- not confrontational / aggro but not too wimpy either. I was a little worried, based on what I've been hearing lately about recent rides, that radical holier-than-thou types would piss people off and kill the fun -- but I worry almost as much about those with an overly gentle approach who always want to move over to let cars pass.
We had around 150 cyclists and rode for about an hour and a half! We went down first to Center, left on 6th, then up Sierra over to Arlington to Mt. Rose, Right on Plumas down to Moana, then took Virginia St all the way back to California. The ride ended at a party where THE JUVINALS played and we tapped the 3-gallon keg of hard apple cider that Dan Bailey and Kaki donated. That stuff was good...
Ok, about confrontation/wimpiness -- I think our ride was pretty great yesterday, but I think there was a slight lack of unity on how many lanes to take, and when to run red lights. My opinion goes something like this: first priority is to keep our ride together. If it's possible to let cars pass, either at a light or in an adjacent lane, without fragmenting our ride, then we should do so. We don't want to piss anyone off, but at the same time I feel like asking motorists to put up with us for one hour per month (when we put up with them every damned day) isn't asking too much.
As one proudly proclaimed, "WE'RE NOT BLOCKING TRAFFIC - WE *ARE* TRAFFIC!"

Re: OCTOBER 7 RIDE A SMASHING SUCCESS
Tue, October 11, 2005 - 12:07 PMwhen i was riding with it nobody would take over intersections with me so i am here stalling in oncoming traffic on a tall bike with everyone waiting for a green light. it was kind of annoying. have the cops been an issue? how about whole lane usage versus bike lane single file only. details.... -

Tue, October 18, 2005 - 8:20 AMyo wick! you were there? how is it possible that I didn't see you when you were on a tallbike and I was on a 7-seat septocycle?? I thought the "corking" of intersections went pretty well... we did stop at some red lights, but it helped us regroup... -
