Just a quick remeinder that Becket's final performances are this weekend. Fri @ 7:30 and Sat @ 7:30, mantinee @ 2pm on Sunday. Hope you can make it. I am very proud of this production and Jorge is brilliant. Camille also turns in an exceptional performance eventhough her time on stage is limited and the rest of the cast is superb. Hope to see you there. If not, have a wonder holiday season and a happy new year!
Homeslice Productions and The Studio on 4th present the debut of "The Art Bar Cabaret"-- Reno 's Premier Charity Variety Show! This FREE show, debuting Wed. Nov 19th at 8pm, has the integrity of an open-mic in the sense that ALL participants are local artists, but there are only 7 acts "competing" to see who can raise the most money for charity. The audience "votes" by donating to their favorite act, and at the end of the show whoever has raised the most money gets to choose the charity to donate to, AND becomes the featured act/host of the next Art Bar Cabaret. (think: " Reno 's Got Talent" meets classy cabaret setting).
November 19th's show features creativity in the form of: Singing, Dancing, Comedy, Magic, Juggling, Spoken word, and more!
Come out and support local artists, local charities, and unique Reno entertainment.
[Note: If you are interested in performing in the next Art Bar Cabaret, please attend this first show and talk to our fabulous Mistress of Ceremonies, Jes. Or, email homesliceproductions@gmail.com]

"Metacomedy and the Art of Coming Out" by Jes Levatter, Metaphysical Comedienne and Scholar, is a hilarious and inspirational PowerPoint Presentation about comedy, philosophy, and the meaning of life. "Everyone's life has a purpose, this is mine." Learn to know yourself, love yourself, and be yourself.

Tom Stoppard's play "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead" is the next show in our season. Kirk Gardner & Michael Peters will be directing.

When: April 14th & 15th @7pm
Where: RLT's rehearsal hall, 246 E. Arroyo (between Wells & Holcomb) behind little brick house.
What: cold readings from the script
Who: 8 men, 4 women

FAQs:

Do I have to come both nights? No. You are encouraged to do so, but it is not mandatory.
Do I need experience acting? Not necessarily. For the larger parts, probably, but there are many smaller parts and anyone is welcome to audition.
Where should I park? You can park on the street, or if there is space, in the lot to the west of the rehearsal hall (right side).
When will the performances be? It opens Sat. May 31st and plays June 6, 7, 13, 14 (all at 7:30 pm) with matinees on June 1, 8, & 15 @ 2pm.
When will rehearsals be? Rehearsals will vary depending on the part, most rehearsals are M-Th in the evenings. A schedule will be available when you audition and you can let the directors know if you have conflicts. Many conflicts won't necessarily mean you won't get cast but you probably won't get a large part. And once we move to the theater you will be expected to be there for every rehearsal, including weekends.
Move to the theater? Yes, we rehearse our shows in the rehearsal hall (where you audition) but for now are performing at Hug High School's Theater.

Any more questions? Check out www.renolittletheater.org or call 775-329-0661.
Hope to see you there!

What? A new, award-winning play that is cerebral, human, historical, theatrical, and highly entertaining. It tells the story of the birth of the atomic age and the cold war through the life of the bomb's "father", J. Robert Oppenheimer, and his struggles with the consequences of what he has created. Original and thought-provoking.

Come ready for cold readings and more, and dressed for movement. For info and scripts call 826-1685.

Hope to see you there!

Curtains
by Stephen Bill
3M 5F
Ages 30-86
Synopsis: Ida's family is throwing her a 'birthday tea" for her eighty-sixth birthday. Their efforts to be cheerful and make the event a success verge on the desperate. Ida is racked with pain and feels she has lived too long. Susan, the prodigal daughter who has been away for 25 years, arrives to find that her mother has only brief periods of lucidity and appears not to remember her. After the party is over and the family has dispersed, it is Katherine, Ida's eldest daughter, who is left to look after her. Katherine is tortured by the promise she made to her mother not to let her suffer, and after several bungled attempts, is finally able to "help" her mother die. When the family finds out what she has done, a can of worms is opened as they struggle with their consciences and individual inadequacies. All the old family prejudices and rivalries are forced out into the open in a sometimes hilarious, painful and moving picture of a family in turmoil.

Enchanted April
by Matthew Barber, from the novel by Elizabeth von Arnim
3M, 5F
Ages 25-70
Synopsis: When two frustrated London housewives decide to rent a villa in Italy for a holiday away from their bleak marriages, they recruit two very different English women to share the cost and the experience. There, among the wisteria blossoms and Mediterranean sunshine, all four bloom again—rediscovering themselves in ways that they—and we—could never have expected. A charming period piece (1920's).

Neville's Island
by Tim Firth
4M
Ages 35-50
Synopsis: Neville, Gordon, Angus and Roy, a middle management team from Pennine Spring Water, Ltd., are sent on a "business outbound team building weekend" in the Lake District. What should have been a run-of-the-mill orienteering exercise turns into a slapstick nightmare when Neville's team boat hits the rocks leaving them stranded on an uninhabited island—the first people ever to be shipwrecked inland. These middle-aged men are not suited for life in the wilds and quickly begin to show it. Neville, the captain of the team, tries to be objective and practical; Gordon quickly moves from caustic to cruel, and stays there, taking little responsibility for anything; Roy, recovering from a recent mental breakdown, goes deeper into prayer; and the mild-mannered Angus does his best to remain cheerful until Gordon's constant hounding drives him to violence. Their attempts at teamwork create one humorous situation after another as they backfire, and after which Gordon's belittling drives them apart. Roy seems to suffer another breakdown, running into the woods with just the right equipment to hang himself, causing Angus to snap and come at Gordon with a knife. The situation pitches on the brink of catastrophe when suddenly a chopper spots them and begins to descend. But the events on the island have changed them so much that even imminent rescue can't bring back who they were.

Stage Fright
by Charles Marowitz
2M 1F
Ages 45-65
Synopsis: A leading metropolitan drama critic is led by an attractive production assistant into a recently discovered nineteenth-century theater. There, the critic will film a television interview for a documentary on the actor John Wilkes Booth, who once acted on those very boards. The critic, F.F. Charnick, notorious for his venomous reviews, visibly warms to the classy elegance of the British P.A. But no sooner has he downed a glass of wine than he falls drugged and unconscious. When he awakens, he is firmly tied to a Shakespearean throne on the stage of the old theatre with an ominous woman intoning Lady Macbeth beside him. The attractive P.A. has turned into Mitzi Crenshaw, an actress of the "old school" whom Charnick has savaged in dozens of reviews. The critically maligned actress has shanghaied the surly critic as part of an elaborate murder plot against the man who virtually destroyed both her career and that of her actor-husband, Denis Michaelson. After forcing the bound critic to endure several dramatic recitations, Mitzi's husband suddenly arrives on the scene, ostensibly to try to deter his unbalanced wife and release the imprisoned critic. But after an elaborately rigged "scene" between the couple, it is soon apparent that Denis is actually in on the plot and just as determined to wreak revenge against the critic. The theatricalized torture goes through several permutations, inspiring blood-curdling confessions from the critic and ending with the actors granting him a reprieve—but not before his most embarrassing revelations have been taped on video to be shown to the entire nation.

Probably most of you never knew Alice Brouss. Her days of performing for RLT dated back to the theater on 7th & Sierra Streets, but if you ever worked on a show with her, chances are you remember her well.

She was a character, not just on stage, but in life as well. Her voice carried a constant growl, maybe from years of smoking and maybe from years of singing, and maybe from something that was nobody's business so she never explained! Her expression could be scary -- some people thought she was mad all the time, but it was just her way because then she would smile and you could feel the joy pouring out from her eyes. She liked a good laugh, too.

As an actress, I remember Alice doing a lot of comedic roles. She could get a reaction with the rise of an eyebrow or by pursing her mouth. There was a time I remember, though, that she performed a more dramatic piece and made it look as easy as anything. It was when Gothic North Theater was performing at Laxalt Auditorium and the show was "Voices". The director, Joan Long, had cast Alice in the part of an aging American ex-patriot reminiscing about having gone to Paris in the early part of the 20th century to study with Isadora Duncan. The staging was very sparse; each actress got only a cube to sit on and a key-light, but Alice managed to take you beyond the stage and into her memories of a place and time that seemed more beautiful, glamorous and exotic than a dark theater in Reno NV in the 90's.

Alice quit doing theater several years ago and she died a few days ago. I know I'm always amazed when I meet someone who recognizes me and remembers seeing me on-stage or who tells me how a performance of mine impressed them and stuck in their memory. I don't expect people to remember me. I suspect that Alice would have been surprised to know that she was so well remembered, too.

RLT has been asked to provide "atmosphere" actors for the IGT Hollywood Holiday party on Saturday, Dec. 8. The commitment is from 4:15pm until 7pm on that Saturday, plus one meeting to go over finer details of what they want from us. This is easy stuff and a lot of fun, too. I've done things like this and they're quick, easy and fun, so I urge you to join us. Here's the details.

IGT wants all of their employees and party guests to feel like stars for the evening. Now stars, as we all know, need FANS and that's where we come in. RLT needs to provide about 20 fans of all ages to wait at the red carpet and be "star-struck" as the party guests appear. We'll ask for autographs and snap pictures and generally make a fuss. They also want us to provide a Marilyn Monroe and an Elvis look-alike for photos so let me know if you're interested and just happen to have an Elvis outfit!

In exchange for this IGT is prepared to make a generous donation to RLT. So, although this is still volunteer acting, it's acting for a good cause. Please email me directly if you're interested (julie@jewelcelebrations.com) or call my office 636-3041, because I need to finalize a list really soon!

Thanks one and all!

We need a person to run sound and lights (we will train the right person, it shouldn't be a complicated show).
We also need a few people, 2 or 3, to help backstage. One might be the stage manager, if interested. We have a large cast so much of the set will be moved by cast members but we will need assistance.

We currently are rehearsing Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Fridays. We'd love to have you come to as many rehearsals as possible to learn the show and meet the fantastic cast. The week of tech we have rehearsals Sunday, Sept. 16-Wednesday Sept. 19th. We have Thursday off and we might or might not have a rehearsal the 21st. All tech rehearsals & performances take place at Hug High School, all rehearsals prior at 246 E. Arroyo.

We open Saturday the 22nd of September. Curtain is at 7:30 on Fridays & Saturdays, at 2 on Sundays. The show runs through October 7th. A total of eight performances.

We held the 13th Annual Blythe Awards on July 28th of this year. For those of you who missed it, or just can't remember what happened, here is a recap:
Best Bit Actor: Victor Mercado ("Wrong Turn at Lungfish")
Best Supporting Actress: Camille Abelow ("A Doll's House")
Best Supporting Actor: Doug Mishler ("Early One Evening at the Rainbow Bar & Grille")
Best Lead Actress: Holly Natwora ("A Doll's House")
Best Lead Actor: Michael Peters ("Wrong Turn at Lungfish")

It was a season full of strong performances, exceptional production values, and huge audiences. It wasn't easy to pick winners in any category, which is always a nice feeling!

Congratulations to all the nominees and winners and we hope that you will grace our stage many more times in the future!
