I realize most of you in this tribe are experienced hoopers, but I thought you might still want to know about the classes starting on July 8th. Need a hoop

Hello

I am new to hooping, in fact, so new, i don't even have a hula hoop. Does anyone have an inexpensive, beginners hula hoop they'd like to sell? I should have bought one at a festival this summer but didn't. I'm looking to spend about $40 for a "medium", not the big ones, not the small ones, but somewhere in between. About 3/4", I think.

2 beautiful P.S.I. hoops for sale in Great condition!

I have a beautiful one year old p.s.i. hoop for sale! While it is a year old, it hasn't seen much action since February when I splurged and bought a second smaller p.s.i. and now I am no longer acclimated to its size and weight :( I want to save for a set of twin p.s.i. hoops so sadly I must sell my first love! It is 36 inches 7/8th tubing stiff with lime green and hot pink gaffers tape. 8 blue LEDs 8 Dragonfly 4 Rainbow Riders and 4 elfin ring. It is GREAT condition and needs a loving home! check out my profile pictures for photos. It is the one with mostly blue. I'll sell that one for $280 plus shipping. PM me if interested

I am also going to sell the second one I bought because again I need twins. The second one is 35 inches 7/8th tubing stiff with neon orange and hot pink gaffers. tape 8 red yellow facing to make orange, 8 dragonfly, 8 elfin ring. WHY TWO HOOP TRIBES??????

I'm glad you bring that up....I think Richmond does need two hoop tribes.
Here's the reason Joe and I decided to keep the tribes both active and separate....
Joes has spent the past two years working with Citizens Against Crime, the Boys and Girls Club and others to provide community awareness by using the hoop to bring people together. The primary focus of Richmond Hoopers will always be around charitable and volunteer efforts. RVA Hoop Lovers and the MeetUp group I started, will hopefully feed more ideas and volunteers into Richmond Hoopers.

RVA HOop LOvers is more focused on the individual Hooper. The Hooper that wants to improve hoop skills, needs help from other experienced hoopers, wants to meet up and share flight time, etc.... We might even take a road trip from time to time to meet up with other hoop groups...RVA HOop LOvers is more for the performer. It's new and it's open for all sorts of creative ideas for advancing hoop skills.

The separation is clear to me today....but who's to say it might not change tomorrow. At this time, my goal is to build a community of hoopers that just want to be involved in "something"..... the overlap is good, but the separation is necessary for now.
Hope that clears things up for anyone that's been wondering about WHY.....
I'll try to do a better job of making things more clear going forward.

Having re-read all this, I am reminded that I went against the original vision for the Richmond Hoopers tribe by posting my C-HAG classes there. For that, I apologize and will be more mindful in the future.

Out of respect for the agreement with Joe M, and the work he had done for 2 years prior to my becoming involved, I will not post “revenue generating” events/activities on Richmond Hoopers, and ask that other members do the same.

I would like to remind everyone that RVA Hoop Lovers is not a business, but rather a community that was started back in Oct. 2007. It was a community from the start it continues to be a growing community to this day. RVA Hoop Lovers recently began to bloom at a more rapid pace for two significant reason….1) I am no longer Co-Owner of Hoop-Active, and 2) RVA Hoop LOvers is fortunate enough to have found a home base at Carving Healing Arts Gallery. C-HAG provides us with a safe, comfortable space to gather for all sorts of hooping activities….jams, workshops, classes and whatever else our creative hearts desire. SO, the simple fact is….we have grown…in numbers, in groups, in skill levels and even in businesses. Where there was nothing, or a mere handful, we now have many….and I love the fact that we have choices.

WE have grown…WE will continue to grow….and WE are HOOPERS. My son said to me just the other day….”Mom, I see hoops everywhere I go!!!” I thought my heart would explode with love.

Learning on your own versus classes

I'm reposting this from Tracy with my response included because I think it is an awesome topic. It fell under FireFly's class listing so I didn't think people would know it was there...

ugh so i would love to hoop with all you lovely people. But I just don't see the point in paying for something that you can just share with the world!! I've seen Cari's poi/double hoop video and it was just jaw droppingly inspirational but with practice and effort i feel that I could be able to achieve something just as great! If y'all ever just want to get together for a friendly, non business, hoop session let me know. Otherwise happy hooping and bliss to all.

My response:

I absolutely agree with you Tracy! That is exactly the path I have taken and I think the results have been fabulous. I know that during those times in the beginning when I had no one around to show me anything I would have killed for a class. What takes me months to break down and process I can pass on to students in less than 10 minutes. Sometimes it is frustrating to watch things come so easy to others that were very difficult for me but I think that is just my fate in life. That is where I stood with poi and now with hoop. But I get a great satisfaction with knowing that I climbed this ladder on my own and when I get something it means so much more because it was so hard. I love to share what I can when I can and teaching the classes gives me the opportunity to do that guilt free. I can pull away from my tremendous responsibilities and hoop knowing that by getting paid it will make our lives easier. Otherwise, no one would benefit from the journey I have taken because no one would get a chance to see it. You Tube is one way and I don't get to interact with other hoopers which is a huge part of the whole picture. But on that rare occasion that I have free time, I love to hoop jam! And when that happens, I will be sure to post it here on Richmond Hoopers tribe so we can spend some time together in a "friendly, non business, hoop session". Good luck on your hooping journey Tracy, I look forward to seeing your hoop flow in person sometime!

Summer Hoop Classes in Henrico

Henrico County Parks and Rec. is offering Hoop Dance classes this summer. Come join me, Cari, for 6 weeks of fun and exploration of hoop dancing! Monday night classes run from July 6th to August 10th at Pinchbeck Elementary School off of Gayton and Gaskins Road in the West End. Level I starts at 6 pm followed by a Level II class at 7 pm. We will be indoors in a very spacious, air conditioned, multipurpose room at the school. All levels of hoopers are welcome and based on what you already know you can sign up for the beginner's Level I class or the post-beginner Level II class. Level I teaches the basics of hoop dance starting with waist hooping and we dance our way through shoulder, leg, angle, and sustained spin hooping with additional off body hooping skills like isolations and jumps. For those of you that already have the basics, come join me in the Level II class where anything goes. Every week is different as we explore every aspect of Hoop Dance from building inner strength with our minds to building core strength with our bodies. We explore single hoops and twin hooping (my personal favorite and specialty). All I know is we spend a lot of time smiling and laughing, and dance to the music. Where else can you have this much fun for $36? That is $6 a class!

Hoop Playshop with Michele

DanceAFire and Contradiction Dance are excited to present a special workshop with local Hoopdance legend Michele Clark next Sunday, March 8. The class will be during the normal open level Hoop Class time, but will be extended to a two-hour block from 3:30 - 5:00 to give more time to absorb the new and fun techniques.

Creative Movement Play and Hoop Dance
Expand your movement vocabulary and learn how to integrate tricks and dance into your hoop flow. We will explore a variety of techniques to help you develop your own signature tricks and free up your body giving you more room for expression and increase your musicality.

Need RVA Hooper Input - PA-leaze!

Hello Hoopers!

It's been a cold weather mission of several folks to secure an indoor practice space. Unfortunately, we haven't had much luck. So, my thoughts on the matter have shifted. What if we formed a club? A local hooping club with a membership fee that would secure a weekly space for practice, workshops and anything hooping related. How many of you would be willing to pay a fee, to secure a space for 6 or 12 months at a time? It's hard to say what that fee would be because I do not have a space yet, but I'm guessing in the neighborhood of $25 - $40 for a six month period. Again, that's a guess but the point is, it would be a reasonable fee. If I could get an idea of the amount of interest, I would feel better about negotiating with the facilities. So, I need your input.

Tell me what you think....would you consider joining a hoop club with membership fees if it meant you would have a space to practice at least once a week?

What would be your preferred side of town?

What would be your preferred day of the week....week night, weekend?

Any thoughts on places that I could pursue would be helpful too. Indoor space is not only useful for the cold weather months. It would nice to secure a space that we could use for workshops all year round. I'm willing to put in the leg work to help make this idea a reality if you guys would assure me that you are interested.

Richmond Hoopers Moderator Needed

Hello Richmond Hoopers! Believe it or not, I'm supposed to be the moderator of this tribe. FireFlyGirl is dead (in more ways than one), but because of technical issues with Tribe, I cannot swap the moderation to my new account. Something I need to work on a little harder. I'd like to see this tribe used for exactly what Brook just posted about the TN Hoop Path workshop. Recently Groovin' Megzz had a workshop in Richmond, and I'm sure if Megzz had known about this site, she would have posted here and more of us would have been aware of her visit. I'm now part of a small hoop group/business called Hoop-Active and I would like to post our classes and events here as well. Hoop-Active keeps me pretty busy so I'd like to see if someone can take on this tribe and put it to good use.

I will get tribe to help me gain access to FireFlyGirl, I would LOVE to pass the hoop. Any takers?

Transformus Chill Spin Zone and Skillz Exchange

I am happy to announce that the Chill Spin Skillz Exchange will be returning to Transformus 08!

The Chill Spin Zone is a low-key, safe place for spinners and dancers of any skill level. It is both a learning and a teaching environment as well as a non-competitive play space. There will be music, workshops, classes and freeform fun throughout the weekend. Look for us in the Elyssium Fields.

The Chill Spin Zone and Skillz Exchange is brought to you by Philosopher's Stone, Bubble Camp, Ripe and Juicy and many wonderful and giving teachers from all over Mysteria. i need to play with fire

hello hoopers!!!!
i just got back from langerado music fest in florida where i got to hoop my ass off ! i am feeling extra energetic with all the extra sunlight and hooping ive done recently and i am writing to ask for some help. i have been hooping for a while and consider myself pretty advanced but i have yet to have the opportunity to learn to hoop with fire. would anyone of you richmond hoopers be willing to help a sista out and teach me? i dont really think i would need much teaching just a fire hoop to use and some encouragement. im so grateful for the positive energy and happiness hooping has brought to my life and i really want to take the next step to FIRE!!!!
happy early spring to everyone!!!! cant wait for some outdoor shows so we can all get our hoopin' grooves on!!

Hold up! We have decided, for a few reasons which I will explain in a moment, to POSTPONE this workshop to the weekend of MAY 31st/JUNE 1st!

We are really looking forward to connecting with all the Baltimore area hoopers--we just began to realize that March 22-23 being Easter weekend was inhibiting some folks from coming, and we want to make the shop available to as many people as possible.

Also, we are hoping (!) to bring Hoop Pather BETH up there with us! Y'all will love hooping with her---she is a magical hooper and wonderful person.

We will build a new registration link pronto and post it here. Please spread the word to other hoopers! We look forward to seeing y'all in May/June!

Thanks, everyone, for a nice week in Richmond. That was one of the most unique workshop spaces I've ever taught in. It felt really good to feel the space, and share with you guys.

Special thanks to Stacey, Cari, and Steven for the (southern) Hospitality. Winding down with fire and friends that night was just what I needed. Everyone was so comfortable to be around. I'm sorry if my silence during the fire spinning seemed anti-social, but I was so into the Flow that was present that I just wanted to hoop as much as I could.

Cari, you are sick with fire. You fly with the wings of the Phoenix. Thank you for sharing "the Blue House" with us. Blessings to you, Sister.

Howdy, friends...

Hopefully I'll get to meet all of you soon. My name's Bird, I just arrived from Charlottesville where I made hoops (and still do so) for Spiral. I'm trying to work on my skills here in RVA (I'm pretty new to the hoopin' thang, just since September) so I've been carrying my hoop over to the YMCA because there's a great little half-gym that's almost always empty, with a mirror wall---and the other day, the Wellness Director approached me and said she'd love to have hoopers come practice there! Regular practice space once a week or more, and maybe even advertised events once a month (like something inclusive of kids, families, the community).

The catch: you've gotta be a member of the Y. She tried really hard to work around that, but that's the deal. The good part about that is it's sliding scale---my membership to ALL the YMCAs in Richmond is $12/month, and it would only be 10 if I was just a member at the Franklin Street one. Cheap.

So. My question is, of course, who's up for it? I go there all the time already, so if you're a member of the Y or are thinking of joining, hit me up! Let's organize!

We are thrilled to announce that Baxter and Ann from The Hoop Path are coming to Richmond to amaze and enlighten us with a 3 hour Hoop Workshop!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
This workshop will introduce you to the physical challenge and meditative bliss of hoopdance: the energetic flow art of dancing with the sacred circle, the hoop. Hooping can be an exercise, a dance, a meditation. On the Hoop Path, we approach our hoop Practice with shared intentions not only to improve our hooping skill, but also to develop the skills to go Within, as we believe that Inner and Outer strength are inextricably and intimately intertwined. The introductory workshop will be divided into two sections, both taught by master teacher and Hoop Path founder Jonathan Baxter. Together we will focus on building core hooping skills, introducing students to Hoop Path terms such as pe*A*ce, Ritmo, One Tree/Two Tree Hooping, and Two Birds. Depending on where we find our rhythm as a group, we may well get into some of the more physically challenging techniques like Reversing, Breaking, Paddling, Lifts, and Angle Hooping.

First National Hooper's Conference!!!

Hoop Convergence ~ Friday April 11 - Wednesday April 16, 2008

Please join us for the very first national (hopefully International!) Hooper’s Conference -- The Hoop Convergence.

The Hoop Convergence is the bringing together of a wide variety of hoopers from all over the world to create a synergistic learning environment where we will address all aspects of hooping. There will be panel discussions and workshops with a variety of amazing teachers and hoopers from all over the United States.

The Convergence will be held in beautiful the Hooper Haven of Carrboro, NC. Everything in this wonderful town is in walking distance and already many local hoopers are opening their homes or offering camping on their property to visiting hoopers from all over the country. Make plans to join us now.

Here are some of the amazing workshops and activities that are confirmed as of right now:

HOOP SKILLS WORKSHOPS
Currently, Spiral, Revolva, Caroleeena and Jewels are all confirmed to teach. These workshops will teach a variety of hooping techniques, including hand work, footwork, bodywork and dance, as well as hooping specialties, such as street performance and twin hooping. There will be workshops appropriate to all skill levels and other classes will be added to the curriculum as they are confirmed. Workshop details are forthcoming.

YOGA, INJURY PREVENTION & HEALING
We will host an injury prevention discussion panel made up of yogis, hoopers, massage therapists and other body/mind workers and healers. Hopefully we will be able to offer a HoopYoga workshop as well.

COSTUME DESIGN and THEATER MAKE-UP WORKSHOPS
In addition to learning costume design and theater make-up, the Convergence will also include a trade circle, a costume swap, sewing and non-sewing methods for making/decorating costumes, pattern shares, and a discussion where we will share ideas about themes, hoopable clothing and info for creating fire safe costumes . If you stay for the entire week, there will be excursions to some kick ass thrift stores too! (Then, after the Convergence, you can try out your new threads at Shakori Hills the following weekend!)

COMMUNITY, SERVICE PROJECTS and WORLD HOOP DAY
There will also be a discussion panel on community building, event planning, service projects and World Hoop Day. Hoopin' Annie O, creator of World Hoop Day, Jewels, who created Hoops for Haiti, and Caroleeena, who started the Henrietta Jensen Outreach and Education Project in Jamaica are all confirmed and will all be available to help you envision and manifest your world hoop day events or community outreach projects. (Hopefully Xta will be able to make it also!)

FIRE
On Saturday night, we will have a drum circle and fire ceremony with fire dancing. If you haven't fire hooped before, this could be your moment! There will also be discussions on Fire Philosophy & Ritual, Safety, Tool Repair, Craft and Professionalism. (There may also be a workshop highlighting a variety of different fire hoops and build techniques. We may not have time amidst everything else to build our own fire hoops, but maybe. If not, I'm sure you can order one from a local crafter to be customized for you and ready for your arrival to NC or to be shipped to you when you return home.)

JAM ~ DANCE PARTY
Sunday night, we will have a funky, dressy, jamming hoop hop set. There will also be a pre-party, house-party for dressing and making up!

OTHER THINGS we hope to include are:
Performances by and for each other
Publicity and Marketing
Business Management and Taxes for Professionals
Teaching Techniques
Hooping with kids
Sharing Poetry and Stories
Hoop Philosophy and Spirituality

Finally, if we can manage it, and if we have enough people at Shakori Hills, I think it would be fun to try to choreograph and premier the world’s largest choreographed hoop dance! I know they would let us do it there. We just have to see if we can make it happen!

We have lots of other ideas too – Circus hooping, Native American Hoop Dance, Rhythmic Gymanastics, Hoop Yoga, integrating specific types of dance into hooping, and more – but those things may have to wait until next year … unless you know someone willing and/or able to teach! If you would like to teach or lead a discussion panel, please post that on the Hoop Convergence tribe too or feel free to PM a description to Jewels at hoopflow@gmail.com. Depending on our turnout, you will hopefully also receive compensation for your efforts. (We are still working out the estimated costs for this event but we are working to keep them reasonable. Several teachers are volunteering altogether.)

If you can stay through the week, festivities, workshops, discussion panels and field trips will be offered Friday through Wednesday. Then, on Thursday, we'll head over to Silk Hope for a great, family-friendly, hooper-rich, inexpensive local music festival with incredibly sweet vibes through the following Sunday!

If you can't stay through the week and for the music festival, there will be plenty of hoopy goodness happening during the weekend from Fri - Sun/Mon. Do try to stay Sunday night for a big jam and costuming pre-party though!

A new leader for the Richmond Hoopers

Please join me in welcoming Stacey as the new leader of the Richmond Hoopers! I will stay very much involved with the group and will be available to help out at many of the events we are planning. Stacey's enthusiasm for hooping and her desire to carry on our message and expand our outreach programs in the community makes her a perfect candidate to run the group. I am very happy to hand the torch to her.

As for me, I just felt it was time for a leadership change after starting the group and running it for 2 years. I am hoping to start a few new endeavors to help the community. Specifically, I'd like to work towards being a swimming coach, to some day teach guitar lessons to kids, and to use my background in Chemistry to design and put on Chemistry demonstrations and mini-lessons in the schools to help get kids interested in science.

With Stacey's leadership and help we are planning to put on many hooping activities in the near future with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Richmond, Gallery 5, Citizens Against Crime and many more. Please stay tuned for more details and again, please welcome Stacey as our new leader.

Citizens Against Crime Neighborhood Clean-up and Cookout at Boys and Girls Club 11/3

Hola Hoopers, come have some fun with us! We are teaming up with Citizens Against Crime again to help them at their Neighborhood Clean-up event on Saturday Nov 3. We have also been asked to join them for a cookout immediately following at the Boys and Girls Club of Richmond - Capitol One Unit from 12 - 2. We will be providing hula hoops for the kids to use and putting on a little demonstration and group hoop down! If you have some free time I hope everyone can come out and give Citizens Against Crime a hand and / or please at join us for the cookout. I could really use some help hooping it up with the kids. I will have extra supplies so that anyone who needs a hoop can make one of their own.

We are going to set up a meeting with them for sometime next week to go over the details of what they envision for us and how we can help out. I would like to have someone take the lead on some of the coordination for this event because I am up to my ears with work and other commitments. I will handle all of the financing for supplies and materials - I just need help with well...everything else...coordination, sign making, and recruiting and organizing volunteers. I can help out with all of this stuff but I would like for someone to lead. Please let me know what you think. I would like for the Richmond Hoopers to do many events like this throughout the year. There is so much that we can do but I need lots of help and enthusiasm from you all.

Fun time making hoops at the Carillon last Sunday

We got to meet some of our cool new members and made lots of hoops together. The drummers were there and we got to hoop it up with them for a while.

Hi everyone! I watched some amazing hoopers this weekend and I'm super excited to begin hooping too! Is there anywhere in richmond that sells them?

Hi there! My name's Megan and I currently live in Farmville, Va. I just got back from the All Good Music Festival and while I was there I fell in love with all the people who were hooping. It was just amazing to watch them for hours during the music. I really would love to get into hooping so I hope to join you guys the next time you have an event or gathering coming up!

Supplies

I have read most of the prevoius posts and made my first two hoops yesterday:) Just a few questions for the locals.... Where do you get your supplies around town? I got most stuff at Lowe's , but I was wondering if there is anywhere else that may be cheaper....How about colored duct tape? I used E.T. and I really want some purple and couldn't find any. Anyone see purple E.T. anywehere around here? I have found colored duct tape and was wondering what you veteran hoop makers think. From what I read, it may be harder to apply and may leave a sticky residue....What do you use to do the connectors? I seemed to have a hard time pushing them in. Did I not get it hot enough or is it hard in general. I guess that is all for now. It's time to practice:)

Hooping and Hoop making workshop May 20 from 1-4 pm in Byrd Park at Non-Violence Festival

The Richmond Hoopers have been invited to put on a hoop making and hooping workshop at the Not With These Hands.org Non-Violence Festival Sunday, May 20th from 1-4pm at Byrd Park on the Carillon grounds in Richmond.

Here is some more information about the event:
It will be a free, fun, family- centered event celebrating non-violence in the community and the efforts to prevent violence in Greater Richmond. Not With These Hands.org initiated a community created pledge of non-violence earlier this year, and we are having a community event at Byrd Park on The Carillon grounds on Sunday, May 20th from 1-4pm. We would LOVE for your group to come and help people get interested in hooping, promote your programs, classes, etc. and generally have fun. It would be a part of our activities section, which will include Mask Making by The Creative Arts Space, cooperative games by Just Be Yoga, Yoga Demonstrations by Nora Pozzi and Integral Yoga friends, and face painting.

The event will have performances by 5 different local groups (string instruments, dance, drama, drumming, and gospel singing) and our partner organizations will all have information booths there.

The heart of the event will be the exhibition of all pledge vision submissions received up to that point. We will have an unveiling of our "Band Together Quilt" made up of 8x8" squares of fabric decorated by the public. Please visit our website to see more! www.notwiththesehands.org

The Richmond Hoopers will provide all of the hoop making supplies. I am looking for a few of our members to volunteer and help out with the workshop and also I'll need some help getting ready assembling hoops beforehand.

Richmond Hoopers on Virginia Currents

Yes, yes, it's true. We were featured on the PBS program Virginia Currents last week along with the River City Burners. Virginia Currents is a 30 minute news magazine about people and places in Virginia. The program aired on WCVE and other PBS stations around Virginia. The production crew came out to a few of our Richmond Hoopers Gatherings this summer with their cameras and they also came to the Citizens Against Crime Expanding Opportunities Camp that we did with the Burners for the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Richmond and Fairfield Court Elementary School. We are truely honored to have been featured on this wonderful program. Thank you to WCVE, The Community Idea Stations, Public Broadcasting Service, and everyone at Virginia Currents! A very special thank you to Paul and Melina for their vision, hard work and support of the community, and for supporting the Richmond Hoopers and helping us get out our message.

Citizens Against Crime - Expanding Opportunities Hooper Camp, Friday July 14

The Richmond Hoopers and The River City Burners will be teaming up again with Citizens Against Crime to put on an Expanding Opportunities Camp for the Fairfield Court Boys and Girls Club and students of Fairfield Court Elementary School this Friday at 5:30. We will be helping the kids make and decorate hoops and sock poi, giving hooping and poi lessons and having a big cook out. At the end of the evening we will close with a fire performance by the River City Burners. Citizens Against Crime is putting everything together and will be providing hot dogs and hamburgers for everyone.

We need some volunteers to help the kids decorate their hoops and sock poi - anyone interested can contact me through the tribe email for more information or just meet us there.

Polka Dot Art Center - New Hooping Space

Well, we got to check out the new space last night at the Polka Dot Art Center and it totally Rocks! There is some heat and there is plenty of room for hooping and hanging out. Although it is a little cluttered and we had to clean up a little, it is a very comfortable space and I think everyone will enjoy hooping there in the future. There are lots of chairs for lounging and even a bar where we can serve hot coffee and tea. The bathrooms are clean and it is totally free for us to use every Tuesday night!!! I hope everyone can come out and join us next Tuesday.
