Items from Recycled Plastic Bags

Just wanted to share this link to Daily Om selling items made from recycled bags from Nepal. As I've mentioned, I've seen handbags made from old plastic snack bags here in Mexico. Wondered if that might be something people in Roblito are interested in. These items look cool too.

Christine... I saw hand bags made like this here in Mazatlan too. Very exciting!

Yesterday I had a very successful meeting with the owners of the Playa Mazatlan Hotel... the oldest and maybe nicest in the Golden Zone. They are keen to support the Palmillas project, and want to host a green festival at the hotel next year.

Samantha, the wife of the owner's son, also works for a phone company setting up communications technologies in rural areas. She was looking for someone like me to hook up with, and says she will help write the proposal to make it happen. She said that putting a tower near Roblito would offer net access 50km around.

I've gone on a few field trips with new friends... to a mountain bought by 25 mountain bikers who are making a track, and also a nature preserve for native plants where we will set up treehouse hammocks.

Tomorrow I am going surfing with Roberta and her man Fufo. Danny is leaving to head back to the the USA.

In Tecuala I found sheet aluminum to fix the playground in Roblito, so we will get to do that project Tuesday.

And the cool thing about working with the mountain bikers and nature preserve is that together we are exploring a greenway for tourists and locals to use to get between all the little rural villages around Mazatlan.

I love the sound of this. Being in Vallarta where there's a lot of traffic and buses, there are very few bicycles in the central area. Kind of sad because I always envisioned biking in Mexico and here I am reminiscing about the daily biking I did in New York City. So preserving natural areas for biking between villages and exploring is so great! May they never discover those horrible ATVs that rip up the terrain and make lots of noise. That's another thing that has developed here. Unfortunately, most people would prefer (sometimes due to being out of shape physically) to be on a motorized vehicle "exploring nature" than using their own "pedal power".

Development is such a tricky thing. Because once it starts occuring, it can be like a snowball. You might start out with the idea of bikes and greenways, but then someone who's interested in just making a buck comes in and tears up the area for ATVs. I guess it's all about planning and getting the initial people in power to buy into preservation and "green" and how using those concepts will also make money.
