I've never met Babarah -- she was one of the first bellydancers in Rochester, back in the 70's. Several dancers in our area got their start with her. She's in Arizona now, but is coming to NY to visit friends and family. She's teaching a workshop on June 30. Here's the information:

Re: Workshop coming to Rochester
Mon, June 4, 2007 - 9:08 AMGosh, a slice of Rochester belly dance history! I'm intrigued. However--
I wonder why the location is "secret"? That leaves a bad taste. Location is one of several factors that goes into my decision about whether or not to take a particular workshop. Not the most important, but it's there, especially when we're talking about a dancer I know zip about and who's asking $50 for 3 hours.
Sorry, Rafiqa--don't mean to be negative, just a little leery here.

The Discipline of Middle Eastern Dance is a comprehension of the basic technique, movement and guidelines which are an integral part of the culture, and teach the dancer how to express and enhance this movement.
As in all dance forms, there is a specific discipline
which provides guidelines to perfect the movement.

and enhance the Middle Eastern art form.

What are your thoughts when you see an inferior performance?
Improve your dance by integrating fundamental core movement and cultural significance.
Simple basic technique and guidelines would probably improve an inferior presentation.
The workshop has three sections:
The first section breaks down the core/fundamental movement, the overall posture and the attitude that are the expression of the culture.
The second section teaches a series of combinations.
The third section applies the combinations to music.
The goal: to maintain cultural significance in this dance form.
