A brief review: Hip Happens with Suzanna Del Vecchio at German House

A big thanks and round of thunderous applause to Brenda Steffon, Michelle Charles, and Debbie Robinson (of Be the Goddess Productions), who organized a wonderful dance event at the German House this past weekend! Presented were two days of workshops with Suzanna Del Vecchio, plus a gala show Saturday night featuring live music by the John Massoud Ensemble and the Sultan.

While I didn’t attend the Saturday workshop, I did stop in mid-day to get some bling for my henna tat from henna artist extraordinaire Robin Jaeckel (www.hennarising.com) and a quick shoulder massage from Pete Mugnolo. Suzanna was teaching what looked like a lovely Oriental choreography to a room crowded with belly dance enthusiasts of all stripes.

Later, at the pre-show buffet, foodies feasted on Mediterranean-themed dishes as dancers in bright cover-ups mingled with family and friends. The festive atmosphere intensified when the John Massoud Ensemble and the Sultan—the highlight of the event—tuned up oud and dumbek and rocked the house with middle-eastern music.

As one of the performers in the show, I found the event organizers mindful of our needs—providing a large dressing room, seeing to temperature adjustments, and making sure that water was available. A few more mirrors would have been welcome, but for the most part everyone respectfully shared.

The show itself was a delight, a mix of ensemble and solo performances, folkloric and contemporary styles. As is often the case with workshop shows, this one too was a bit long. Unfortunately for some dancers later in the second act, many of the audience had either departed or were too busy visiting with one another to pay attention to what was happening onstage. I hope those performers know that their contributions were appreciated!

Afterward, many of us were seduced into staying even later by the Ensemble and the Sultan--how often do we get to dance to a live middle-eastern band in Rochester? And then--all too quickly it seemed—it was over.

On Sunday, Suzanna taught a saucy drum solo routine to a portion of Sahra Saidi. A warm and generous instructor, she made sure to rotate lines so that everyone had a chance to see and be seen (and corrected—that’s why we pay for live instruction, after all!) Fastidious about safe technique, Suzanna supplied modifications of many of the moves for those of us with flexibility and strength issues, allowing each dancer to adapt the choreography to her own ability and style.

This was a terrific first effort by Be the Goddess Productions, and I’m eagerly looking forward to their next event.

Nomadiqa Ethnic Fusion and Arabesque Beats - Repost

Hi Folks,
We recently released a debut album. It's a mix of electronic and arabian styles. We're hoping it might appeal to the tribal and belly dance community, and also people that are into this sort of vibe and music. Please feel free to have a listen on myspace where we have four full tracks available to listen online.

http://www.myspace.com/nomadiqa

It would also be great to promote it through the network of tribal and/or belly dance teachers who might be interested to sell it at a class or bazaar. We can offer it at wholesale prices with plenty of capacity for the seller to make a decent profit on top of the wholesale price.

Please contact info@nomadiqa.com for further details. Sorry for the self promotion.

Hope to hear from you.

Many thanks,
Workshop coming to Rochester

I've never met Babarah -- she was one of the first bellydancers in Rochester, back in the 70's. Several dancers in our area got their start with her. She's in Arizona now, but is coming to NY to visit friends and family. She's teaching a workshop on June 30. Here's the information:

www.babarah.com/flyer.htm (Registration form is there)
********************
Master Instructor, historian, author and choreographer for over 35 years, Babarah will be returning to Rochester, New York to present the culmination of her expertise, from both the East Coast and the West Coast, in her latest workshop:

“The Discipline of Middle Eastern Dance”

As in all dance forms, there is a specific discipline which provides guidelines to perfect the movement. This discipline enables the dancer to project and enhance the Middle Eastern art form.

An amazing performance is the best publicity a dancer can ever have. Improve your dance by integrating fundamental core movement. This instruction presents dance competence for all levels of Middle Eastern Dance from beginner to performer. The foundation of this workshop is used in the Training of Trainers (TOT) core curriculum.

Schedule:
Admission: 8:30am
Class begins: 9:00am
Class ends: 12:00 noon

Location: Available to registered students ONLY!

Registration: Deadline for registration: Friday, June 22, 2007

See the website for more info!

What about all y'all?

I have the opportunity to open a studio/art space, customized to my specifications, free of rent for the next year.

However, because of all the other stuff I have going on, I am very uncertain.

Thoughts? Ideas? Anything?????

WNYBDA Holiday Party! (FREE)

hey! If you're close by..wander in!

pot luck dinner, gifts for every guest!

I'm looking at my crazy schedule & I think Saturday December 16th is the best night....
during the day from 3-6pm I'll be in studio at the store as usual...then the party will be from 7:30-10pm!

this is a FREE event for all the dancers in the community to come and hang out and take a break from the holiday chaos. we'll have food, open dancing, performances, & henna!

We fell WAY short on our goal for the family justice center's fundraiser, SO I am going to do a silent auction of gift baskets, we have items donated from the Bellydance superstars, Jim Boz & Sandstorm, UB Center for the Arts, and hopefully more b4 the date!

The FJC runs SOLELY on donations from the community and government programs(which don't really have much to offer) and there are threats of job cuts..ands right now, EVERY penny counts that we bring in! so please if you are able....help those who cannot help themselves! we will also be collecting toys, clothing & food for Haven house...

it would be a shame to lose such a great place that helps SO many vicitms of domestic violence & elderly abuse, sexual abuse and child neglect....

we house many agencies under one roof...and have several off site partners as well...

on site we have...the sex offense squad of the BPD, CPS, the DA office, legal aid of Buffalo/neighborhood legal services, hispanics united, the international institute, a chaplain & counseling program, UB Forensic scientists, crisis services, domestic violence advocates, child programs, haven house..and more...

If you are unable to attend & just wish to make a monetary donation, you can make the check out to The Family Justice Center of Erie County...we are non profit, so your donation is TAX DEDUCTIBLE!

we also need more donations for the auction, pls contact me if you are interested. I'll be pulling a bunch of hip scarves, accesories & and CD's off the shelf myself to make a few baskets...
If you are out of town, donations can be mailed to:

Nedra/ WNYBDA
177 Garrison Road
Williamsville, NY 14221

Event

I have the perfect space to host an event here in Rochester in the spring.

Here is the concept.

A Bazaar and hafla (think Rakassah only in a bigger space and laid out better).

I would like to have lectures about the culture and dance history, and possibly some workshops. The workshops are not the most important thing to me because of the numerous ones being sponsored up in this area anyway.

I've been looking into musicians. I would much rather have musicians than a day of dancers.
Now, obviously there will be a huge honking drum circle.

I've been looking into Oojami, Corvus Corax, a few others but they are all international and I don't know how feesible this is. Anyone have any other -more local- ideas?

Anyone have any more ideas for this event?
Thanks!

As the next year progresses I am hoping to not only host more events myself, but also work with others to promote a more unified sisterhood in Rochester. Not to mention, we are between Buffalo and Syracuse which means a TONNE of opportunity for fun!
So welcome...shimmy well and nice to meet ya!
