I'm just starting to look into the possibility of camping in the Red Feather Lakes area in the next few weeks (probably during the week if that makes it easier to find a space) and am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for campgrounds or if I'm crazy to think that there will be any space available in August.
I want to find a campground that is relatively quiet (no big loud RVs) and that allows dogs, and that would feel relatively safe for a woman travelling alone. If I can't find anything for August I can always try a weekend in September.
I'm in the process of checking out camping web sites, but thought I'd ask for any personal recommendations, b/c sometimes listings don't tell the whole story.
Thanks.

Re: campgrounds in Red Feather Lakes area?
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 11:57 AMwww.shambhalamountain.org/ this is up there and it looks pretty cool. I have been wanting to go there for a couple of years. It is a Buddhist temple.

I heard that lost lake is cool but I might just be thinking of the cheap beer.
Lost lake is you take prarie divide road to CR-180 to lost lake road I dont know about camp sites there but if its in roosevelt national forest you should be cool.
If you just look at a detailed map you can find it north of the main area. Also I am pretty sure that Roosevelt national forest is around there. So you can camp any where in there for free not needing a camp site. If you look at an atlas it should help you alot. ??? I used to know someone up there but dont any longer and havent been there so I can really help. -

Mon, July 25, 2005 - 1:06 PMyeah I know, i was skething cause they were huge ones, ones like the city would light off on the 4th, not like little bottle rockets. Usualy dont care what others do but dont start a forest fire, we been ravaged by them around this way for years. HIghmeadow, and haymen, im good without another!!!! -

Re: campgrounds in Red Feather Lakes area?
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 1:56 PMI agree I think table mountain was started by a cigarette butt though. I dont care if people want to kill them selves but they should be responsible to others if they arent going to be toward themselves. I am sorry if any of you smoke I know tons of people that do and I dont give them shit unless they are dumb about it. I dont think people realize how much cigarette butts pollute our earth. Just think about the amount of people that smoke and say that on the average between all people one person does it a day which is a pretty low number that is a lot of butts. -

Re: campgrounds in Red Feather Lakes area?
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 10:12 PMInteresting that you should mention the Shambhala Center. A friend from another site just mentioned that to me as well, in particular the Great Stupa, which he wants to go visit. Sounds very interesting.
I feel pretty clueless not knowing about the fire in the area. I hope it's under control.
I may look for something in the Poudre Canyon area. I would love to camp in RMNP but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to bring a dog, and that's a bummer.

Wed, July 27, 2005 - 8:08 AMI'm going this weekend on saturday for the Kan'Nal, Dark Star Orchestra, and Hot buttered rum string show at the mish. I think I might be meeting with some others if anyone else wants to go to a show and then camp after. We are going to figure out a place to camp incase that guy doesnt let us camp in his trailer lot or whatever I havent been up there yet this year. Is there any camping further up the canyon with in a reasonable distance from the venue? does anyone know? I guess I could check it out also.
But let me know -

Thu, July 28, 2005 - 6:37 PMTry this link: www.coloradoguide.com/forests...play.cfm and choose "Camping" from the pull down menu. I believe many of the campgrounds along the Poudre River are in the Roosevelt National Forest area. -

Fri, July 29, 2005 - 3:48 PMIts all good man, when I have camped up there it is back towards 287like a couple of miles in a trailer home thing I cant remember. Its just I heard that they where'nt doing that or whatever and was looking for a backup. I keep hearing all these neg things about the mish and I just think its I dont know bullshit cause its whats been said for a while, but I also think it could happen. Who knows I guess we'll see? I think if it did go under that they would have a huge blow out go out bash to say goodbye.

Re: campgrounds in Red Feather Lakes area?
Tue, February 28, 2006 - 7:48 PMI have spent alot of time at Red Feather. The place you want to go if you want quiet, few or no people, and the raw beauty is Creedmore. Follow the road from Livermore past Red Feather, and go the the end fo the road essentially. Just a few miles past Red Feather. Its gorgeous and remote enough that the campers will be back down the road. Your dog will love it there. The lake is what everyone thinks of when they hear about Colorado. The rocks and cliffs always felt safe to me. Guess I liked having something at my back. Creedmore is a special place. There are alot of places to hike into from there. That place is truly God's country.
Over the years I have checked out some the history and out of the way spots. The road in between Poudre Canyon and Red Feather is a bit rough, dirt and slow going. But its neat. There are some old graves out there and a ghost town called Manhattan. In the sun the flecks of gold are still visible and a few slabs of what were buildings a long time ago. And there is a great burger place in the town of Red Feather too.
Just a few thoughts. . . .

Re: campgrounds in Red Feather Lakes area?
Tue, February 28, 2006 - 7:58 PMJust had another thought if you want to be out away in a neat area and take your dog. At the top of Poudre Canyon, bottom of Cameron Pass is a parking lot for Lake Zimmerman. Its a 2 mile hike in but worth the hike. Just follow the path from the parking lot. Even in July there are still cornices hanging and its just below tree line. Lake Zimmerman is another one that is what Colorado is.
