I'm just starting to look into the possibility of camping in the Red Feather Lakes area in the next few weeks (probably during the week if that makes it easier to find a space) and am wondering if anyone has any recommendations for campgrounds or if I'm crazy to think that there will be any space available in August.

I want to find a campground that is relatively quiet (no big loud RVs) and that allows dogs, and that would feel relatively safe for a woman travelling alone. If I can't find anything for August I can always try a weekend in September.

I'm in the process of checking out camping web sites, but thought I'd ask for any personal recommendations, b/c sometimes listings don't tell the whole story.

Thanks.

I have spent alot of time at Red Feather. The place you want to go if you want quiet, few or no people, and the raw beauty is Creedmore. Follow the road from Livermore past Red Feather, and go the the end fo the road essentially. Just a few miles past Red Feather. Its gorgeous and remote enough that the campers will be back down the road. Your dog will love it there. The lake is what everyone thinks of when they hear about Colorado. The rocks and cliffs always felt safe to me. Guess I liked having something at my back. Creedmore is a special place. There are alot of places to hike into from there. That place is truly God's country.

Over the years I have checked out some the history and out of the way spots. The road in between Poudre Canyon and Red Feather is a bit rough, dirt and slow going. But its neat. There are some old graves out there and a ghost town called Manhattan. In the sun the flecks of gold are still visible and a few slabs of what were buildings a long time ago. And there is a great burger place in the town of Red Feather too.

    Just a few thoughts. . . .

Just had another thought if you want to be out away in a neat area and take your dog. At the top of Poudre Canyon, bottom of Cameron Pass is a parking lot for Lake Zimmerman. Its a 2 mile hike in but worth the hike. Just follow the path from the parking lot. Even in July there are still cornices hanging and its just below tree line. Lake Zimmerman is another one that is what Colorado is.
