Hi Family,

The fastest way to legalize industrial hemp is to legalize the entire Cannabis plant. No part of this plant is a threat to society.

Right now there are two competing signature drives to put Cannabis legalization initiatives on the ballot in California in November 2010.

One is found at www.taxcannabis2010.org

The other is found at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org

Please look carefully at the text of both laws (the text of each is finalized) and make up your own mind which one you support.

I am supporting www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org because our law will protect Cannabis users from discrimination in

healthcare, employment, and housing. It is a full legalization measure for industrial hemp and recreational cannabis which will restore full human rights to Hemp farmers and Cannabis users all across California. Of course supplying Cannabis to children will remain illegal just as it is today. Driving vehicles under the influence will remain illegal just as it is today. Cannabis users will still be fired from their jobs if they show up to work impaired.

There are two parts to our plan. The first part is to publicly post and personally distribute our "Freedom Lover's Call to Arms" in order to recruit volunteers. This document is available here-

www.imgur.com/dbU83

The second part of our plan is to ask everyone who volunteers to make a pledge for how many signatures they can collect in

the next 30 days or so. 15-30 signatures is a good number. If enough volunteers show this level of commitment we can succeed. You can probably get that number from your family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors without having to solicit in public too much. This is an "out of the closet" movement. We will have to proudly advocate human rights for responsible, honest, hard-working Cannabis smokers in order to convince legitimate people to support us. I can supply stickers equivalent to each persons pledge number. These stickers can be used to generate interest and be given to voters who sign the petition. Here is the sticker design-

www.imgur.com/2cjvb

Feel free to distribute and use these images. Just don't copyright them.

We have 145 days in order to get the number of signatures that we need. Our petition is hot off the press on 9/11 and we

have started collecting the first signatures yesterday 9/12.

We are polling 56% public support for Cannabis legalization in California which menas that this is an initiative which is not doomed. Its time has finally arrived; we are at the tipping point right now. Now is the time to do this and to do it right. We may only get one chance. If a law which is not exactly what we want is implemented then we may lose our critical mass and our ability to set it right.

I believe that less adults will smoke cannabis after it is legal. This is the case in the Netherlands where it has been

available over-the-counter for 30 years yet only half as many citizens (percentage-wise) smoke as do citizens here. My economics professor has taught for years that prohibition has not succeeded in decreasing usage by increasing penalties. Instead it has destroyed lives and families without substantial benefit to society. After legalization hard-drug usage will decrease due to a "separation of the markets," a decline in the price of Cannabis relative to hard-drugs, and the restoration of honesty and common sense in drug education. Violence, thievery, and the incarceration of honest people will decrease as well. I also believe that a well regulated market will decrease the availability and appeal of cannabis to children. In fact teenage Cannabis use in California has fallen steadily since the passage of Proposition 215. Furthermore the adults who smoke Cannabis after legalization will be better able appreciate the majesty of nature in peace and unity without learning to fear and disrespect authority figures. This will be better for their spirits and better for society. Finally the human rights of legitimate medical Cannabis patients will be better protected than they are today. Legalizing Cannabis will create a safer, healthier, and more humane California for us all to live in.

If you want to help us in any way please contact the CCI campaign at www.CaliforniaCannabisInitiative.org or write me at
deep_space_underground@yahoo.com I give you my encouragement to modify this message if necessary and distribute it to anyone who might help on any forum or by any mechanism.

Love,
-Fully Committed

Rock the Earth Announces 2008 Planet Defenders
Dave Matthews Band, Andrew Winston, Karen Cragnolin of Riverlink
win prestigious award

(DENVER) - Colorado-based environmental organization Rock the Earth has announced its 2008 Planet Defender Awards, in conjunction with their national Rock the Earth Day celebration. Virginia-based musicians Dave Matthews Band, Andrew Winston Strategies Founder Andrew Winston, and Executive Director of Riverlink Karen Cragnolin were selected as the winners in three categories. Planet Defender recipients are nominated by Rock the Earth members and chosen by Rock the Earth's national Volunteer Staff.

Dave Matthews Band, winners in the Artist category, have long advocated for environmental sustainability through their words and actions. Touring for more than 17 years, the Dave Matthews Band has promoted their environmental ethic through their tour practices and by collaborating with a host of environmental organizations. Stefan Lessard, DMB bass player, has helped the band form a partnership with the non-profit environmental group Reverb in an effort to educate fans as well as other musicians to promote environmental sustainability by offsetting their tour by using Biodiesel in their tour busses, reducing the Band's carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits, offering eco-friendly merchandise to their fans and reducing the amount of waste they produce at shows by recycling and utilizing biodegradable utensils and plates for their catering. The Band has also been involved in numerous benefit concerts and environmental initiatives over the years, including a partnership with the Nature Conservancy to plant 900 trees in Band's hometown of Charlottesville, VA, on the Conservancy's land and working with Ben & Jerry's to offer a flavor of ice cream that supports global warming relief. The Band's charity, the Bama Works Foundation, has also distributed millions of dollars in grants to environmental organizations. Dave Matthews sits on the board of Farm Aid and recently performed an acoustic show for the nonprofit, Seeds of Change, with the Dalai Lama.

" Dave Matthews Band is in a fortunate position to play to many fans on tour," says Lessard. "This allows us to spread a positive environmental message to hundreds of thousands of people in a fun concert setting."

Andrew Winston, founder of Winston Eco-Strategies, is co-author of Green to Gold , the best-selling book offering advice to companies on how to go green. Andrew is a globally recognized expert on green business, and has written for or appeared in Time, BusinessWeek, Forbes, The New York Times, ABC News, National Public Radio, and CNBC. After a career in business, Andrew pursued his passion to find the overlap between business and environment. In his talks to thousands of people around the world, Andrew speaks the language of business as an evangelist for the benefits of going green. He also served as the Director of the Corporate Environmental Strategy Project at Yale's renowned School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. Andrew is dedicated to helping companies both large and small use environmental strategy to grow, create enduring value, and build stronger relationships with employees, customers, and other stakeholders. His work in addressing environmental pressures on the marketplace and working with corporations to develop eco-strategies has earned him the Planet Defender as Community Leader.

"I am honored to receive the Planet Defender Award as a Community Leader from Rock the Earth. I consider myself an evangelist for green business, helping companies see that environmental protection and a strong, thriving business community are no longer at odds - in fact, they depend on each other. Businesses that solve environmental challenges for themselves and their customers will be the ultimate winners...and they will lead the creation of a healthier, more sustainable planet."

Karen Cragnolin, executive director of RiverLink , was selected as the winner of the Grassroots Activist award. Riverlink is a regional non-profit spearheading the economic and environmental revitalization of the French Broad River and its tributaries in Asheville, NC. Through her efforts, the organization is engaged in simultaneous efforts to address water quality concerns throughout the French Broad River basin, expand public opportunities for access and recreation, and promote the economic revitalization of Asheville's dilapidated riverfront district. She currently serves as the acquisitions chair for the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, Buncombe County's Conservation and Environmental Boards, the City of Asheville's Watershed Advisory Board and ex-officio member of the Asheville Tree and Greenway Commission, the French Broad River Garden Club and Foundation Board, and the Warren Wilson College Board of Visitors. Her actions in preserving open space and developing greenways along the river corridors for all to enjoy makes her a wonderful choice for the Planet Defender Award in Grassroots Activism.

"I am honored that my work to protect the environment has been recognized with a Planet Defender award and support what Rock the Earth is doing 100%. Clean water and clean air are neither a democrat or a republican issue - it is all of us. We have to work together to make sure our children and grandchildren and their children and grandchildren can drink the water and breathe the air, too. We have rights as individuals, but also have a clear collective responsibility to make sure that Mother Earth can continue to support us all, no matter what our political affiliation. There is nothing either conservative or progressive about breathing clean air and drinking clean water. The environment is the ultimate bipartisan issue."

Rock the Earth is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit, national public interest environmental advocacy organization, committed to protecting and defending America's natural resources through partnerships with the music industry and the worldwide environmental community. Rock the Earth represents those individuals and communities whose environment or natural surroundings are directly and adversely affected by the actions of others. Through partnerships with artists as diverse as Bonnie Raitt, Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, and Bon Jovi, Rock the Earth educates and activates fans to pursue a vision of global sustainability and environmental responsibility. Previous winners of the Planet Defender Awards have included Jack Johnson, the Barenaked Ladies, Blue Ocean Institute's Carl Safina, Salt Lake City's Mayor Rocky Anderson, Karen Dolan of the Illick's Mill Project, and Jason Rutledge of the Healing Harvest Forest Foundation.

If the malignant greed of the government ignores the many voices of protest and disregards the imminent peril of wildlife, what can be done? As polar ice-caps diminish, bear cubs drown. More drilling for oil in their habitat greatly increases potential for hazardous oil spills, no guarantees to protect wildlife and the rapid demise of one of the world's fierce and majestic animals.

I wonder what parents will tell their children a few years hence when asked, "What did you do to help the polar bears?" Will we be able to say we resolved to drive our cars less, we used public transport, we actively worked to advance more eco-friendly fuel options, we refused to buy from environmental terrorists?

Our failure to be respectful stewards of this most precious and beautiful earth will not be easily forgiven by our offspring. And if they indeed survive, they inherit a desolate, ravaged planet, testimony only to our arrogance and self-absorption.

Doing nothing is criminal and complicit in the mindless voraciousness and disrespect for the sanctity of life that characterizes the current U.S. leadership.

GROUPS APPEAL RULING ON COLORADO
RIVER MANAGEMENT ON
100TH ANNIVERSARY OF GRAND CANYON PROTECTION

Four conservation groups filed an appeal today from the U.S. District Court in Arizona to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals as part of their on-going effort to protect and restore the Grand Canyon's natural sounds and wilderness values from a steady increase in motorized and commercial uses.

The groups, which include River Runners for Wilderness, Rock the Earth, Living Rivers and Wilderness Watch, claim the National Park Service's new management plan for the Colorado River corridor which authorizes motorboat use and helicopter passenger exchanges in the heart of the Grand Canyon is inconsistent with National Park Service obligations to preserve the area's wilderness character.

The groups challenged the National Park Service's management plan in Federal District Court in 2006, claiming that the Park's own policies require managing the canyon as wilderness. They also claimed that the National Park Service illegally granted the majority of river access to commercial concessionaires thereby forcing members of the general public to wait years for a chance to obtain a permit to float the Colorado River.

In November 2007, U.S. District Court Judge David G. Campbell upheld the National Park Service's new river management plan. Intervening in the case on the side of the Park Service were the Grand Canyon Private Boaters Association and the Grand Canyon River Outfitters Association.

The groups' appeal comes on the 100th anniversary of President Theodore Roosevelt's declaring the Grand Canyon a National Monument.

One hundred years ago, President Roosevelt noted "We have gotten past the stage, my fellow-citizens, when we are to be pardoned if we treat any part of our country as something to be skinned for two or three years for the use of the present generation, whether it is the forest, the water, the scenery. Whatever it is, handle it so that your children's children will get the benefit of it."

George Nickas, executive director of Wilderness Watch, builds on that commitment to protection. "No doubt Teddy Roosevelt would be appalled if he were here today and saw how the park service has commercialized the Grand Canyon and allowed the song of the canyon wren to be drowned by the racket of outboard motors."

"Notably, when first proposed, President Roosevelt was forced to strongly defend his Grand Canyon proclamation against repeated opposition in the courts" stated Tom Martin, Co-Director of River Runners for Wilderness. "One hundred years later, we are in a similar fight and likewise determined to win the best possible protection for Grand Canyon's Colorado River" added Martin.

"What's at stake is incredibly important to all Americans. Not only is public access to our public spaces, without the need to pay concessionaires thousands of dollars, at issue," noted Marc Ross, Executive Director of Rock the Earth, "but also the idea that there needs to be places where one can go in this country to seek peace and solitude without hearing the roar of engines."

The groups are represented by Julia Olson of Wild Earth Advocates and Matthew Bishop of the Western Environmental Law Center.

Often artists with whom we collaborate use biodiesel and/or let environmental groups table their shows. But rarely will artists make it a point to actually go out and organize environmental service projects throughout their tours. Thanks to the assistance of Music Matters www.musicmatters.net, Rock the Earth is collaborating with the John Butler Trio www.johnbutlertrio.com on environmental service projects during an upcoming tour stop in San Francisco.

On Sunday, December 2nd, JBT will be collaborating with Rock the Earth, Surfrider Foundation www.surfrider.org and Save the Bay www.savesfbay.org to clean up Ocean Beach in San Francisco. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world's oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now has over 50,000 members and 80 chapters worldwide. The San Francisco chapter's Beach Clean-Up Program is one of the most successful of its kind. As a recipient of the Surfrider Foundation's distinguished "Clean Beach Award," this program has set the standard for other Surfrider chapters around the country, and increasingly, the world.

It would be great to get a good showing of people out for the clean up to show JBT just how much we care about our beaches. This will be a great event for all ages so bring the kids AND the grandparents! Bags for trash collection will be provided by Surfrider so all you need to bring is a willingness to help beautify Ocean Beach :-)

To participate in the San Francisco John Butler Trio environmental service project, write to tree@rocktheearth.org

And don't miss JBT at the Warfield later that night!

I'm pasting below the text of a recent fact sheet the RtE technical team put together. Please note that the National Park Service is accepting public comment until September 15, so if you feel so inclined, please send a letter or email before Sept. 15.

Tuolumne River and Hetch Hetchy
Hetch Hetchy Valley, in Yosemite National Park, is an area of remarkable natural beauty. One of only four glacially-carved valleys in California, it features granite bluffs, tall waterfalls and grand vistas. Since 1923, Tuolumne River has been impounded by O'Shaughnessy Dam , creating Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. This 1,900-acre lake in the middle of the National Park supplies San Francisco with over 85% of its drinking water, along with a modest amount of electrical power. The dam was built over the strenuous objections of legendary conservationist John Muir, and environmentalists have deplored its existence ever since.

Tuolumne River Management Plan
The National Park Service (NPS) is finalizing the scope of a new management plan for the Tuolumne River under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. This law requires the NPS to preserve select rivers possessing outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geological, fish and wildlife, historical, cultural, or other similar values in free-flowing condition and to protect these rivers and their immediate environments for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.

In 2006, NPS solicited comments from the public, requesting input into the scope for the Management Plan. Rock the Earth submitted a detailed legal and technical comment letter, urging NPS to consider removing the dam as part of the Management Plan, or at a minimum, to evaluate alternatives for operating the dam.

Continuing the planning process, NPS issued the Tuolumne Planning Workbook this July. This document, which is written for the non-technical reader, summarizes the options currently under consideration and requests further comments from the public. The Workbook does not propose to consider the management of the dam, or its removal, as part of the Management Plan.

Rock the Earth continues to strongly believe that NPS is required to consider the dam as part of the Management Plan. The Workbook states that the reservoir is not eligible to be included in the Wild and Scenic River designation because it is not free flowing. This ignores the fact that the only reason the Tuolumne River is not free flowing through Hetch Hetchy is due to the presence of the dam. If the dam was removed, the impounded segment of the river would be restored to its natural flow, and would be eligible to be considered for protection under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

In our September, 2006 comment letter, Rock the Earth demonstrated that removing the dam and preserving San Francisco's water supply are technically feasible and worthy of further study.

In addition, the presence of the dam clearly affects the free-flowing segments upstream and downstream of the reservoir. For example, lowering the water level could potentially reclaim a portion of the river upstream of the reservoir. Apart from the option of removing the dam entirely, NPS should consider alternatives for operating the dam in order to fully assess its impacts on the river and its outstandingly remarkable values.

Get Involved!
NPS is accepting comments from the public through September 15. We encourage our friends and members to participate in the public discussion on the future of this natural wonder. If you believe that removing or altering the operation of O'Shaughnessy Dam should be considered as part of the Tuolumne River Management Plan, consider submitting a comment to NPS. Some points you may want to include:

ÿ Hetch Hetchy Valley represents an outstandingly remarkable value of the Tuolumne River that NPS is mandated to protect;
ÿ Removal of the dam is technically feasible, and, in conjunction with other improvements, can be implemented without endangering San Francisco’s water supply;
ÿ Short of removing the dam, NPS should evaluate alternatives for the operation of the dam.

Apart from issues surrounding Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, the Workbook contains a great deal of information on management options for the other segments of the Tuolumne River within the National Park. We encourage you to download and read this document, and share your thoughts about the management of the river with NPS.

Get behind a movie and a movement that means a lot to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Make sure you check out the film 11th Hour which opens in New York and Los Angeles this Friday, August 17th. For more info on showtimes/locations, go here: www.11thhouraction.com/seethefilm
Take a few minutes to look through the 11thHourAction site and download 11th Hour banners for your own MySpace pages and to find out how YOU can take action!

Billie Joe Armstrong from GREEN DAY says:

Last week, Adrienne and I went to the premiere of "The 11th Hour," Leonardo DiCaprio's new documentary film. The movie is really great. You should check it out (it opens in New York and Los
Angeles on Friday the 17th, and in other cities later this month).

"The 11th Hour" is intense. It tells us the truth that nobody wants to hear: that human beings, especially greedy corporate executives and their politician cronies, are responsible for putting our planet in serious danger. If things don't change soon, life on Earth may not survive. It has to be this generation that breaks the chain between the polluting corporations and the crooked politicians, this generation that changes its habits so there's something left for other species and the people who come after us.

There IS hope. We can make changes in our everyday lives, and most of the technology we need to move forward, we already have today. What we really need is the leadership, and the will, to change.

Rock the Earth Announces 2007 Planet Defenders
Barenaked Ladies, Blue Ocean's Carl Safina
Illick's Mills' Karen Dolan win prestigious award

(DENVER) - Colorado-based environmental organization Rock the Earth has announced its 2007 Planet Defender Awards, in conjunction with their national Rock the Earth Day celebration. Toronto-based musicians Barenaked Ladies, Blue Ocean Institute President and Co-Founder Dr. Carl Safina, and environmental educator Karen Dolan were selected as the winners in three categories. Planet Defender recipients are nominated by Rock the Earth members and chosen by Rock the Earth's national Volunteer Staff.

Barenaked Ladies, winners in the Artist category, have long advocated for environmental sustainability through their music and actions. Touring for more than 15 years, Barenaked Ladies have forged an international following through their witty, heartfelt lyrics and special relationship with their fans. BNL has recently teamed up with Reverb to communicate with their fans about environmental and social issues that are increasingly important to them. On their recent Fall Tour, BNL fueled their tour buses and trucks with biodiesel, offset the energy used at each show with wind power, and recycled and used compostable materials backstage.

Dr. Carl Safina was chosen as the Community Leader winner. Safina, 52, a native New Yorker and head of the Long-Island based Blue Ocean Institute, is an internationally-renowned scientist and author who has traveled the globe to study endangered ocean species and encourage humans to realize the inherent magnificence and importance of the global seas and its inhabitants. His latest book, Voyage of the Turtle, is a global journey in pursuit of the Earth's last warm-blooded monster reptile, the Leatherback turtle.

For the second consecutive year, Rock the Earth returns to the Keystone State of Pennsylvania to honor our Grassroots Activist. Karen Dolan is a schoolteacher and founder of the Illick's Mill Project in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Illick's Mill was an operational grist mill in the late 1800s and early 1900s and is being restored to serve as an environmental education center for the Bethlehem community. Illick's Mill is a true community organization, with strong involvement from local high school students, community members, and Pennsylvania-based musicians Rusted Root.

This year's Planet Defenders join last year's recipients - Musician Jack Johnson, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson and Jason Rutledge - and continue the tradition of Rock the Earth honoring individuals who Defend the Planet One Beat at a Time.

Tour. A distinction typically offered to large non-profit organizations, Mayor Will Wynn and City Council Member Mike Martinez will recognize Franti’s efforts for peace with a presentation from the stage. Additionally, through a donation of renewable energy credits from Green Mountain Energy, the Austin performance will offset the 4,400 pounds of CO2 used to power Franti’s Stubb’s performance.

This is an article from Glide Magazine http://tinyurl.com/2j8mtx. I also wanted to mention that we will have a table set up with volunteers working at all 5 shows. Please come by and say hello!

Everyone Orchestra Plans Southeast Tour with Kimock, Coffin & Sipe

Everyone Orchestra will bring their infectiously entertaining brand of improvisational jams to the Southeast next month. The shows will feature group founder and conductor Matt Butler, as well as Steve Kimock, Jeff Coffin, Jeff Sipe, and soulful chanteuse Tanya Shylock.

The impetus for this tour evolved out of Everyone Orchestra’s performance at Smilefest XII in June where Butler, Coffin, Sipe and Shylock were part of the cast which also included experimental guitar legend Adrian Belew, Darol Anger, Jimmy Herring and many more.

EO shows consistently focus on musical juxtaposition and the expansion of experiential boundaries, but as many can attest, the most intriguing aspect of Everyone Orchestra performances is their elimination of the “fourth wall,” encouraging and demanding a melding of audience members and performers in a way that few have previously experienced.

In addition to an impressive musical experience, each EO appearance will include live, on-stage painting by artists whose works will be auctioned to support the efforts of environmental advocacy group Rock the Earth. Working closely with the music industry and its fans, many of whom are concerned with the fate of public lands, air and water, Rock the Earth acts to ensure the existence of a sustainable and healthy environment.

Tuesday, February 20 – The Pour House – Charleston, SC
Wednesday, February 21 - Grey Eagle – Asheville, NC
Friday, February 23 - Neighborhood Theatre, Charlotte, NC

As part of Rock the Earth’s Greening Jam Cruise program, Rock the Earth will once again be hosting a private, interactive educational program on “Social Change through Music.” Only the first 100 lucky individuals will be able to attend this exclusive event, which will be moderated by RtE Executive Director, Marc Ross, and will feature several Jam Cruise artists and activists speaking about how social issues impact their work as artists. Confirmed artists include ALO’s Zach Gill, Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone, Hot Buttered Rum’s Zac Matthews, Zero’s Martin Fierro, Perpetual Groove’s Matt McDonald, and other artists to be announced later. Hot Buttered Rum will also provide a brief tutorial on the everyday use of biofuels as well as some musical interludes that are sure to be memorable. In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to taste fine Italian and domestic wines as well as different microbrew beers donated by Colorado’s New Belgium Brewery. This event will be held on Wednesday, January 3, from 3-5 p.m. in the Byblos Discotheque (Deck La Bohème). Tickets are now available for $20 here. All proceeds will go towards Rock the Earth’s Greening Jam Cruise Project and in furtherance of their mission to Defend the Planet One Beat at a Time. Only 100 tickets will be available and may not be sold on Jam Cruise if they sell out beforehand, so get them now so you don’t miss out on one of the most unique events on Jam Cruise!
At the present time, NPS does not intend to consider the impact from the operation of the dam on the Tuolumne within the scope of the Management Plan. Rock the Earth believes that if it fails to consider the impact of the dam on the river, NPS will be shirking its legal duties for properly managing the River. Not only does the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act mandate this analysis, but also the original legislation that authorized the NPS (the Organic Act and the General Services Act) mandate that NPS consider the impact from the operation of the dam.

Background:

Hetch Hetchy Valley, in Yosemite National Park, is an area of remarkable natural beauty. One of only four glacially-carved valleys in California, it features granite bluffs, tall waterfalls and grand vistas. Hetch Hetchy was often compared to Yosemite Valley itself, that is, until 1923, when O'Shaughnessy Dam was completed along the western end of the valley, creating Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. This 1,900-acre lake in the middle of the National Park now supplies the City of San Francisco with over 85% of its drinking water, along with a modest amount of electrical power. The dam was built over the strenuous objections of legendary conservationist John Muir, and environmentalists have deplored its existence ever since.

One option that might result from such analysis would be the removal of the O'Shaughnessy Dam. Removing the dam and restoring natural flows to the Tuolumne River would be a big task, but it is technically feasible. In the last two decades, more than a dozen studies have been prepared on this issue, and have clearly demonstrated that there are no overwhelming technical obstacles to restoring natural flows to the Tuolumne River and reclaiming Hetch Hetchy Valley.
Over 400 dams have already been removed in the United States, and the same could be done with the dam at Hetch Hetchy, building upon past experiences. With or without human intervention, the ecosystem of Hetch Hetchy Valley would be restored to its original, natural state in less than 150 years.

Ensuring that San Francisco's water supply is not disrupted would be the most critical aspect of the restoration project. But the water that is currently taken from the Tuolumne River from behind the dam could be just as easily diverted from a new pumping station located about a half-mile downstream from the current dam site. This station would be almost imperceptible from the valley, and would provide for all of San Francisco's water needs in most years, with only a 5% shortfall in the driest years. This minor shortfall could be reclaimed in several ways, including enlarging some existing reservoirs and constructing new pipelines. The City is currently implementing a major upgrade of its water delivery system (downstream from Hetch Hetchy), and several of these projects could be modified to provide the missing water supply.

RtE Position:

On September 8, 2006, Rock the Earth submitted a detailed comment letter to NPS, presenting our technical and legal arguments for the need for NPS to review the impact from the operation of the dam. Further, the NPS must also consider potential dam removal as part of the new Tuolumne River Wild and Scenic River Management Plan, in order to restore this natural jewel to America's premier National Park.
TERENCE CHEA
Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - A federal judge on Wednesday reinstated a ban on road construction in nearly a third of national forests, overturning a Bush administration rule that allowed states to decide how to manage individual forests.

U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Laporte sided with states and environmental groups that sued the U.S. Forest Service after it reversed President Clinton's 2001 "Roadless Rule" that prohibited logging, mining and other development on 58.5 million acres in 38 states and Puerto Rico.

In May last year, the Bush administration replaced the Clinton rule with a process that required governors to petition the federal government to protect national forests in their states.

Laporte said the process violated federal law because it didn't require necessary environmental studies.

Forest Service officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

The plaintiffs, including 20 environmental groups and California, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington, were pleased with Laporte's ruling.

"This is fantastic news for millions of Americans who have consistently told the forest service that they wanted these last wild areas of public land protected," said Kristen Boyles, an attorney for Earthjustice, one of the groups that filed the lawsuit in October 2005.

Laporte's ruling does not affect about 9.3 million acres of Alaska's Tongass National Forest, which is covered by a separate rule on road construction and other development.

At the table we have many informative fact sheets so you do not need to be well versed in all the projects but having a familiarity with what we do and a passion for music and environmental protection is a huge plus!

If you are interested in helping out, please send me an email at tree@rocktheearth.org or a message through Tribe.

The 28th annual Harmony Festival (formerly Health & Harmony) in Santa Rosa, CA was nothing short of wonderful. With a lineup that included War, Zero, New Monsoon with Steve Kimock, Hot Buttered Rum, Spearhead, Ratdog, STS9, Ozomatli and many more, we knew we were in for a treat. I've been going to this festival for the past 5 years but this year was definitely different. There was onsite camping, a much better music lineup, Peak Production & Anon Salon helping to set the vibe, 3 late night shows and many more out-of-state people coming in for the fest.

This was the 2nd year that RtE had a booth at the fest. Some people who came up had heard about us at a previous show or fest which helped but most had no idea what we did. One woman I spoke to remembered reading a piece written about the Colorado River Management Plan in the news so it allowed us to have a nice conversation. We signed up 8 new members and many more signed up to receive the RtE newsletter.

There were a handful of bands on the lineup who support RtE's mission - Hot Buttered Rum, New Monsoon, Ozomatli and, one of our advisory board members, Michael Franti and Spearhead. I think one of the highlights for many people at this fest was the performance Saturday night by Zero with Judge Murphy on vocals and Donna Jean Godcheux as a guest. This apparently was the last show with Judge. Jerry Joseph will be on vocals for the band beginning with their sets at High Sierra Music Fest. Donna Jean sang a beautiful Gomorrah which was talked about for the rest of the festival.

Another highlight for many was Sunday's performance by War. They had everyone up and dancing for their many hits - Cisco Kid, Spill the Wine, The World is a Ghetto. Low Rider and many more. Before their set people were talking about the songs they knew by the band. Once the music began everyone realized they knew many more songs than they thought. War is definitely a gem in the classic rock genre. Their songs have a lot of relevance to the current state of affairs.

Aside from the music there were many alternative health practictioners, environmental educators and workshops on topics ranging from how to make your own bio fuel to creating an eco-village. Until this year, I always felt music was secondary to all the wonderful lectures and workshops you could attend but this year it was pretty balanced. I think many people walked away from the fest having learned about something new and exciting.

I encourage anyone who might be in the Northern California area next June to attend this festival. It's well worth checking out.
Smilefest: 6/2-6/4/2006

Gorges Music Park, Lake Toxaway, North Carolina

Chandra Ruff and Kathryn Blau

Chandra and Marc parted ways after RtE’s first date of the Dave Matthews tour. Marc headed off for his sister’s wedding, and Chandra made her way down to North Carolina for Smilefest at Lake Toxaway’s Gorges Music Park. Chandra met up with Kathryn Blau, who will be interning with Rock the Earth in June and August. The night before the festival we (Chandra and Kathryn) stayed outside of Asheville in Tryon, NC, with Ian Williams, a friend of Kathryn’s from UNC-Chapel Hill who was also heading to Smilefest. Ian and his parents, Jacque and Craig, and their French exchange student, Julia, were kind enough to host us in their beautiful log cabin in the woods. They even cooked us pancakes with blueberries fresh from the garden before we left on Friday morning- a great way to start a festival weekend!

We were psyched for the 12th annual Smilefest lineup’s great list of bands. The list ranged from local acts from around the state of North Carolina, like bluegrass boys the Avett Brothers, to Larry Keel and other veterans of the festival circuit. The lineup also included several bands that work with Rock the Earth, including New Monsoon, Hot Buttered Rum String Band, Yonder Mountain String Band, Keller Williams, and Michael Franti and Spearhead.

This year’s Smilefest was held at Gorges Music Park, a new venue tucked in the mountains of NC that boasts waterfalls and shady campsites. We couldn’t believe our luck when we found out that Rock the Earth’s booth would be set up right in front of the main stage, along with the other non-profit organizations working Smilefest. This location was ideal for taking in the weekend’s music and talking to as many people as possible about Rock the Earth.

Our neighbors were Mountain XPress, a progressive newspaper in Asheville that sponsored the main Smilefest stage, and Honest Tune, a jamband magazine out of Charlotte, NC. Mountain XPress was giving away shirts and bags, and since they aren’t non-profit they were kind enough to encourage people to instead donate to Rock the Earth! There were also several local environmental organizations represented, including the Dogwood Alliance and Southern Appalachian Biodiversity Project, working to protect the astounding natural beauty of Western NC and the Southeast. We were excited to meet Walter, an environmental lawyer with SABP who signed up for a RtE membership and is interested in joining forces with us!

The music started at noon on Friday as we were setting up the RtE booth. Hot Buttered Rum and Yonder Mountain were both highlights of the first day of Smilefest, both rocking the Appalachian mountains with their slamming bluegrass. HBRSB played Well Oiled Machine, a song written about their bio-diesel tour bus, a shining example of a band who uses their music to promote environmental awareness. During the set, John Youman of the Indiana Statesman stopped by the RtE booth to interview us about our work with artists such as HBRSB.

After a brief thunderstorm, YMSB kicked off their set with Follow Me Down to the Riverside, and Sam Bush sat in on Keep on Goin’. Between sets on the Mountain XPress stage, the Front Porch stage hosted bands such as bluegrass/ funk/ jam band Barefoot Manner. Sam Bush returned to the main stage as we were closing down the RtE booth, and the thumping electronic beats of the Pnuma Trio rocked the festivarians late into the night.

Saturday morning brought sunshine and smiles as the sweet sounds of Sugar and Spice roused the weary. The day was filled with bluegrass new and old, from the classic twangs of Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings to the high energy thrashing of the Avett Brothers, touted as the next big thing on the bluegrass scene.

As the daylight faded, the tone for the night was set by Jimmy Herring, former guitarist??? for the Grateful Dead, along with Rodgers and Sipe. Conducted by RtE board member Matt Herring, the Everyone Orchestra included many who made other appearances at Smilefest and some who came just to be a part of the giant band’s constantly revolving lineup. Darol Anger, Sam Bush….. and Mountains of Venus singer Tanya. Septet New Monsoon, who works with RtE on environmental justice issues in their home state of California, kept the crowd dancing and warm in the chilly mountain air with their unique brand of international-influenced jam rock. Several band members stopped by the RtE booth throughout the weekend to hang out and catch some of the music from our great location!

Sunday was anything but a day of rest- the last day of Smilefest had the least packed schedule, but the most surprises. The day began with the acoustic stylings of bluegrass bands Greensky Bluegrass, Hit and Run, Town Mountain, Furnace Mountain, and the Biscuit Burners. Early in the day, Rock the Earth was interviewed again for a Smilefest video being produced by Concerts For Charity. Throughout the weekend we sold raffle tickets for a signed copy of the new Animal Liberation Orchestra album, Fly Between Falls, which raised $70 for RtE. Thanks to everyone who donated, and congrats to our winner, Simon Stickel!

We couldn’t help but smile as costume-clad members of the Kids Parade wound past the RtE booth and made their way to the main stage to sing for the crowd. The youth-themed entertainment continued with the Embe Marimba band, a group of students from a local charter school who construct and play their own xylophones.

Stellar bluegrass guitarist Larry Keel and his bass playing wife Jenny unexpectedly played with their band, Natural Bridge, before rocking out with Keller Williams. Highlights from Keller and the Keels included covers of the Grateful Dead, the Steve Miller Band, and two from Tom Petty- Mary Jane and Breakdown.

RtE board member Michael Franti and his band, Spearhead, closed out Smilefest with an uplifting set of politically charged songs that left us with a positive message of peace and community. Franti recently returned from a trip to Iraq, where he filmed the documentary I Am Not Alone- his work with social and environmental issues is an inspiration to both the environmental and music communities. We had the good fortune to meet Michael and the band backstage, and they were nice enough to sign a copy of the Franti poster by the stage painter, “Scramble.”

Smilefest was a success for RtE- we signed up eight new members and many more on the email list. We had a blast at this year’s Smilefest, and we hope to return next year for lucky number 13!
Our first DMB show since 2004 and Chandra and I were pretty psyched. Another new venue for RtE -- the UMB Bank Pavilion, formerly known as Riverport. The venue is a modern shed, a cookie cutter pavilion with a large lawn. What made this venue somewhat different was that it was located in the middle of a business park, which I can only imagine makes access during the rush hour time a nightmare. Luckily, we arrived early, found our passes, met our old friend Alison (from Guster) and our new friends Alex, Bo (DMB), and Josh from the ONE Campaign. For this show, our host from the night before, RtE Staffer, Mike Gerfen, joined in helping us work the show.

After setting up the booth, Mike went to the front entrance to hand out download cards while Chandra and I made some last minute changes to the booth and took in the soundcheck. Gates opened early at 5 and we did our best to draw folks into the booth. The response was so-so with some stopping in.

G Love opened with his blend of funky rap and kicked it into gear immediately with my favorite G Love tune, I-76, followed by Stepping Stone, and a bunch of other tunes (some likely from his new CD due to come out in August) as well as fan-favorites Cold Beverages and Baby’s Got Sauce. The set break was pretty busy before Dave’s set took off with Granny. Joining Dave this tour is Rashawn Ross on trumpet who sat in for pretty much the full set. Other highlights included Crash, Rapunzel, JTR, Jimi Thing (with a huge Jam into Buffalo Springfield For What It’s Worth in the middle of it), Proudest Monkey, Satellite and Everyday.

In the end, we managed to pull out 3 members, 34 new folks on the mailing list and a few bucks in the jar, but were overall, a bit disappointed in our first outing with Dave this tour. Hopefully, as folks see us more and more, we’ll do better in drawing folks in to educate them and have them join RtE.

Joining me for the start of the tour is intern Chandra Ruff, a recent graduate from University of Nebraska. We first met Chandra at the Big Summer Classic show last summer at Sauget (St. Louis), where upon finding out about our group, she immediately volunteered and started working hard. Shade camping, easy walks between stages, ultra-kind employees (save for the woman who would not let me wash out my newly and deeply scratched cornea in the bathroom). Nearly doubling in size since last year, this year’s attendance had to have reached 10-12,000 attendees, most of whom were there to see the two big acts: moe. (3 nights), and Umphrey’s McGee.

The line-up overall, while similar to last year, had some interesting additions: ALO, Yonder Mtn. String Band, Tea Leaf Green, Apollo Sunshine, Honkeytonk Homeslice, Zilla, Pangea, the Disco Biscuits and U-Melt. Meanwhile, Summer Camp Alums New Monsoon, Keller Williamys, Groovatron, Cornmeal, and RAQ continued to grow their audience.

I really like the layout of the three stages: Main Stage, Sunshine Stage (second) and Campground Stage, reserving the barn for the late nights. Unfortuately, my ability to provide musical reviews as I did last year is vastly diminished as we were set back from the Sunshine Stage, so I’m really unable to describe many of the highlights from the main stage. We did manage to get to see some great music from moe. each night as we made it a point to close down during their first set. The highlights for me (in no particular order) were pretty much Rebubala (especially the long tease in and out of it on the second night to finish the first night’s opener), Buster, Brent Black, Crab Eyes, 32 Things, Dr. G, and YOY. Rusted Root had an amazingly energetic set in the hot 90 degree temps on Sat., as did Yonder on Sun. Apollo Sunshine and Cornmeal continue to amaze folks as they start to break on the festival circuit. New Monsoon had a night-closing second stage performance on Sun. and then an enthusiastically received Main Stage set on Fri. All the while, Great American Taxi’s Vince Herman played MC during the day, performing tweener acoustic sets and then jamming around the large campfire at night, performing on Fri. night with a large marching band.

On the RtE front, the highlight of the weekend came when moe.’s Al Schnier stopped by to register some voters with our friends Headcount and then proceeded to tell folks around our booth about our organization, drawing in more than a few to sign up for membership. Then, as if that weren’t enough, he spearheaded an effort to have 30 signed posters donated to be sold at the official merchandise booth to benefit Rock the Earth, Headcount and USTORM (Umphree’s McGee’s brand spanking new nonprofit to benefit needy children and young adults to improve their lives by providing access to various music and art educational programs. Not too many pics (as I was dealing with the aforementioned scratched cornea), but I’ll post what I have when I can.

Meanwhile, it’s a night off in St. Louis at RtE Staffer Mike Gerfen’s (and his lovely wife Amy’s) house and then we begin our summer-long relationship with the Dave Matthews Band in St. Louis.

Much, much more to come.

It's festival season again and that means I need some awesome volunteers to help put in some time at the Rock the Earth booth for both Harmony Fest (June 9-11) in Santa Rosa, CA and High Sierra Music Fest (June 29-July 2) in Quincy, CA. Unfortunately, I do not have any passes available but I can get a few discounted day passes for Harmony Fest for those that are willing to work about 3 hours throughout any of the days of Harmony Fest. Otherwise, I still need people who can help out any amount of time you're willing to give.

If you're interested in helping out, please contact me offlist and let me know which festival you can help at (if you can do a little at both then that would be great!). Also let me know how much time you're willing to put in at the booth.

If you haven't yet checked out our website, please do so www.rocktheearth.org You can learn all about the projects RtE is currently working on and find out what shows we have done (see the Tour Journal for posts from our road crew) and which ones we plan to do.
Feel free to introduce yourselves and tell us where your favorite (or one of) place is in nature and why. There are a lot of people in this tribe and it would be great to get some good conversations happening.

I'll start...I'm Tree and I live in Santa Cruz County, CA. I'm one of the volunteer staff members of Rock the Earth on the Membership & Outreach Committee. One of my favorite places in nature is Mt. Pisgah Arboretum in Eugene, OR http://www.efn.org/~mtpisgah/. My favorite tree is located in this park. Not a very large tree but it has a natural reclining chair in it's trunk that allows you to sit on the tree and lie back under the canopy of the surrounding forest. The tree is located on a path that not many people seem to walk down because I have sat there many times for long periods of time and never saw many people walk down the path. It's serene and very peaceful. I always make sure to visit the park and my tree friend when I drive through the area.

The event was a huge success for RtE, gaining many new members, talking to folks about our work and schmoozing with musicians who want to help Defend the Planet. One of those musicians, who also signed up to be a member of RtE was Bela Fleck, who has supported our work since our first summer tour in 2004. Several other Flecktones stopped by to hi as well - not only are they fantastic musicians, they are actively involved in spreading the word about important environmental and social justice issues.

Rock the Earth is pleased to announce the 2006 recipients of its prestigious Planet Defender Awards. Awarded in conjunction with Earth Day, the 2006 recipients include popular touring musician Jack Johnson, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson, and Jason Rutledge of the Healing Harvest Forest Foundation.

Johnson, a Hawaii native, has been heavily involved in the Surfrider Foundation and has lent his voice towards the protection of the Northwest Hawaiian Islands. In his 2005 tour of North America, Johnson donated 1% of his tour proceeds to organizations certified by One Percent for the Planet, a consortium of businesses who promise to donate at least one percent of sales to the natural environment. Rock the Earth toured extensively with Johnson in 2005, working closely to educate fans on critical environmental issues facing our nation.

Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson has garnered global recognition for his initiatives to move the city toward a healthy, sustainable future. Mayor Anderson created Salt Lake City Green, a guide for the city's comprehensive approach to environmental protection. Mayor Anderson has been a leading spokesman for combating global warming and has helped convince cities throughout the United States to take more aggressive roles in fighting global warming.

"I am deeply honored to receive Rock the Earth's Planet Defender award. Salt Lake City's efforts to combat global climate disruption focus on the urgent need to coordinate efforts by governments, businesses, and individuals to act in ways that effectively reduce emissions of global warming pollutants from the burning of fossil fuels. We all have a tremendous responsibility to do all we can to prevent climatic disaster resulting from global warming. We have the means to meet this challenge; all we need is the personal and political will." - Mayor Rocky Anderson

Jason Rutledge is the President and Founder of Virginia's Healing Harvest Forest Foundation. Healing Harvest was established to develop, implement and support community-based sustainable forestry initiatives and to create a nurturing coexistence between the forest and human communities. The practices of Healing Harvest simply imitate nature and take the worst trees first, using skilled, modern horse logging techniques that have a very low impact on the forest.

"Our Earth is a living organism that we are a part of and dependent upon for our very survival. It is our home, our house and to truly understand this - is to be compelled to defend it. The greatest personal value in practicing restorative forestry is the human dignity dividend of knowing you are doing 'good work.' Such 'good work' is supported by a wonderful award like the Rock the Earth - Planet Defender." - Jason Rutledge

Colorado-based Rock the Earth is an environmental advocacy organization that works closely with the music industry and its fans, many of whom are concerned with the fate of our public lands, air and water.

Planet Defender winners were chosen by Rock the Earth Volunteer Staff out of nominations from Rock the Earth members and friends. Each Planet Defender recipient will receive a one-of-a-kind award created by artist Scott Wolfson of the Crefeld School, a progressive, alternative learning community in Philadelphia.
Rock the Earth Fires Opening Salvo in Battle to Protect the Grand Canyon
Coalition effort to save the Grand Canyon experience with an improved management plan

(DENVER) Colorado-based environmental advocacy organization Rock the Earth has announced its intention to challenge the National Park Service's recent decision to allow motorized, commercial rafting tours and helicopter passenger exchanges to continue through Grand Canyon National Park. Currently, the ear-splitting sound of motorized boats and helicopters dominates the limited access to the Park's Colorado River world-class whitewater experience, ruining trips down the river that many wait decades to have. Rock the Earth and a coalition of wilderness groups, including River Runners for Wilderness, Wilderness Watch and Living Rivers, are defending this crown jewel of the National Park system and every visitor's right to a pristine wilderness experience of the park.

"After consulting with a number of partners and citizen groups, we feel that the recent park service ruling fails to properly fulfill the National Park Service mandate that the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon must be managed as wilderness," stated Rock the Earth Executive Director Marc Ross. "We're fighting to make sure the National Park Service does the duty all Americans entrust them with: protecting this beloved natural treasure."

In addition to the Park Service's failure to remove motorized uses in a qualifying wilderness area, the agency's decision to perpetuate the inequitable allocation of river running permits, is also at issue. Currently, commercial tours receive priority over public opportunities for do-it-yourself rafting and kayaking. "It is inherently discriminatory that river runners have little or no meaningful chance of certainty to experience a Grand Canyon whitewater adventure, while tourists can buy their way onto a high-priced tour almost immediately," notes Jo Johnson, Co-Director of River Runners for Wilderness. "Dangerous national precedents for the commercialization and privatization of public lands and wilderness areas are at stake here," said Julia Olson, of Wild Earth Advocates, one of the firms handling the case. "We hope they finally address these vital concerns now that we've filed notice." A third concern of the group is the Park Service's failure to properly address and mitigate degradation of the Grand Canyon's river ecosystems by human use and the ongoing depredations of Glen Canyon dam.

Rock the Earth is a Colorado-based, national public interest environmental organization dedicated to protecting and defending America's natural resources through partnerships with the music industry and the worldwide environmental community. The organization has recently received support from musician Jack Johnson and the Rex Foundation, allowing it to pursue the defense of important natural areas. In addition to Attorney Olson, Rock the Earth will be represented by Matthew Bishop of the Western Environmental Law Center.
