Volunteers needed at High Sierra Music Fest

We need some rockin volunteers to help at the RtE booth at High Sierra over the 4th of July weekend. Any amount of time you are willing to help would be appreciated. You'll be educating people on RtE's mission of protecting natural resources in partnership with musicians and others in the music and environmental communities. No experience is necessary but a willingness and ease in talking with people about environmental issues is important!

Unfortunately, we do not have passes available at this time so you will need to have already purchased your tickets. Rock the Earth Announces 2008 Planet Defenders
Dave Matthews Band, Andrew Winston, Karen Cragnolin of Riverlink
win prestigious award

(DENVER) - Colorado-based environmental organization Rock the Earth has announced its 2008 Planet Defender Awards, in conjunction with their national Rock the Earth Day celebration. Virginia-based musicians Dave Matthews Band, Andrew Winston Strategies Founder Andrew Winston, and Executive Director of Riverlink Karen Cragnolin were selected as the winners in three categories. Planet Defender recipients are nominated by Rock the Earth members and chosen by Rock the Earth's national Volunteer Staff.

Dave Matthews Band, winners in the Artist category, have long advocated for environmental sustainability through their words and actions. Touring for more than 17 years, the Dave Matthews Band has promoted their environmental ethic through their tour practices and by collaborating with a host of environmental organizations. Stefan Lessard, DMB bass player, has helped the band form a partnership with the non-profit environmental group Reverb in an effort to educate fans as well as other musicians to promote environmental sustainability by offsetting their tour by using Biodiesel in their tour busses, reducing the Band's carbon footprint by purchasing carbon credits, offering eco-friendly merchandise to their fans and reducing the amount of waste they produce at shows by recycling and utilizing biodegradable utensils and plates for their catering. The Band has also been involved in numerous benefit concerts and environmental initiatives over the years, including a partnership with the Nature Conservancy to plant 900 trees in Band's hometown of Charlottesville, VA, on the Conservancy's land and working with Ben & Jerry's to offer a flavor of ice cream that supports global warming relief. The Band's charity, the Bama Works Foundation, has also distributed millions of dollars in grants to environmental organizations. Dave Matthews sits on the board of Farm Aid and recently performed an acoustic show for the nonprofit, Seeds of Change, with the Dalai Lama.

Through her efforts, the organization is engaged in simultaneous efforts to address water quality concerns throughout the French Broad River basin, expand public opportunities for access and recreation, and promote the economic revitalization of Asheville's dilapidated riverfront district. She currently serves as the acquisitions chair for the Clean Water Management Trust Fund, Buncombe County's Conservation and Environmental Boards, the City of Asheville's Watershed Advisory Board and ex-officio member of the Asheville Tree and Greenway Commission, the French Broad River Garden Club and Foundation Board, and the Warren Wilson College Board of Visitors. Her actions in preserving open space and developing greenways along the river corridors for all to enjoy makes her a wonderful choice for the Planet Defender Award in Grassroots Activism.

RtE will have a booth set up at the Green Apple Festival in Golden Gate Park this Sunday conducting outreach to music fans and the bay area environmental community. Volunteers are needed to help at the booth to educate people about Rock the Earth and sign up new members. No prior tabling experience is necessary but a willingness and ability to speak with people about environmental issues is important.

the federal administration saw fit to auction off an enormous tract of Alaskan territory to big name oil companies for oil drilling (www.adn.com/front/story/307588.html).

If the malignant greed of the government ignores the many voices of protest and disregards the imminent peril of wildlife, what can be done? As polar ice-caps diminish, bear cubs drown. More drilling for oil in their habitat greatly increases potential for hazardous oil spills, no guarantees to protect wildlife and the rapid demise of one of the world's fierce and majestic animals.

I wonder what parents will tell their children a few years hence when asked, "What did you do to help the polar bears?" Will we be able to say we resolved to drive our cars less, we used public transport, we actively worked to advance more eco-friendly fuel options, we refused to buy from environmental terrorists?

Our failure to be respectful stewards of this most precious and beautiful earth will not be easily forgiven by our offspring. And if they indeed survive, they inherit a desolate, ravaged planet, testimony only to our arrogance and self-absorption.

Doing nothing is criminal and complicit in the mindless voraciousness and disrespect for the sanctity of life that characterizes the current U.S. leadership.

RIVER MANAGEMENT ON
100TH ANNIVERSARY OF GRAND CANYON PROTECTION

Four conservation groups filed an appeal today from the U.S. District Court in Arizona to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals as part of their on-going effort to protect and restore the Grand Canyon's natural sounds and wilderness values from a steady increase in motorized and commercial uses.

The groups, which include River Runners for Wilderness, Rock the Earth, Living Rivers and Wilderness Watch, claim the National Park Service's new management plan for the Colorado River corridor which authorizes motorboat use and helicopter passenger exchanges in the heart of the Grand Canyon is inconsistent with National Park Service obligations to preserve the area's wilderness character.

The groups challenged the National Park Service's management plan in Federal District Court in 2006, claiming that the Park's own policies require managing the canyon as wilderness. They also claimed that the National Park Service illegally granted the majority of river access to commercial concessionaires thereby forcing members of the general public to wait years for a chance to obtain a permit to float the Colorado River.

In November 2007, U.S. District Court Judge David G. Campbell upheld the National Park Service's new river management plan. Intervening in the case on the side of the Park Service were the Grand Canyon Private Boaters Association and the Grand Canyon River Outfitters Association.

The groups' appeal comes on the 100th anniversary of President Theodore Roosevelt's declaring the Grand Canyon a National Monument.

One hundred years ago, President Roosevelt noted "We have gotten past the stage, my fellow-citizens, when we are to be pardoned if we treat any part of our country as something to be skinned for two or three years for the use of the present generation, whether it is the forest, the water, the scenery. Whatever it is, handle it so that your children's children will get the benefit of it."

George Nickas, executive director of Wilderness Watch, builds on that commitment to protection. "No doubt Teddy Roosevelt would be appalled if he were here today and saw how the park service has commercialized the Grand Canyon and allowed the song of the canyon wren to be drowned by the racket of outboard motors."

"Notably, when first proposed, President Roosevelt was forced to strongly defend his Grand Canyon proclamation against repeated opposition in the courts" stated Tom Martin, Co-Director of River Runners for Wilderness. "One hundred years later, we are in a similar fight and likewise determined to win the best possible protection for Grand Canyon's Colorado River" added Martin.

"What's at stake is incredibly important to all Americans. Not only is public access to our public spaces, without the need to pay concessionaires thousands of dollars, at issue," noted Marc Ross, Executive Director of Rock the Earth, "but also the idea that there needs to be places where one can go in this country to seek peace and solitude without hearing the roar of engines."

The groups are represented by Julia Olson of Wild Earth Advocates and Matthew Bishop of the Western Environmental Law Center.

Dec. 2 John Butler Trio Rocks the Earth in San Francisco!

Often artists with whom we collaborate use biodiesel and/or let environmental groups table their shows. But rarely will artists make it a point to actually go out and organize environmental service projects throughout their tours. Thanks to the assistance of Music Matters www.musicmatters.net, Rock the Earth is collaborating with the John Butler Trio www.johnbutlertrio.com on environmental service projects during an upcoming tour stop in San Francisco.

On Sunday, December 2nd, JBT will be collaborating with Rock the Earth, Surfrider Foundation www.surfrider.org and Save the Bay www.savesfbay.org to clean up Ocean Beach in San Francisco. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of our world's oceans, waves and beaches. Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now has over 50,000 members and 80 chapters worldwide. The San Francisco chapter's Beach Clean-Up Program is one of the most successful of its kind. As a recipient of the Surfrider Foundation's distinguished "Clean Beach Award," this program has set the standard for other Surfrider chapters around the country, and increasingly, the world.

It would be great to get a good showing of people out for the clean up to show JBT just how much we care about our beaches. This will be a great event for all ages so bring the kids AND the grandparents! Bags for trash collection will be provided by Surfrider so all you need to bring is a willingness to help beautify Ocean Beach :-)

I'm pasting below the text of a recent fact sheet the RtE technical team put together. Please note that the National Park Service is accepting public comment until September 15, so if you feel so inclined, please send a letter or email before Sept. 15.

Tuolumne River and Hetch Hetchy
Hetch Hetchy Valley, in Yosemite National Park, is an area of remarkable natural beauty. One of only four glacially-carved valleys in California, it features granite bluffs, tall waterfalls and grand vistas. Since 1923, Tuolumne River has been impounded by O'Shaughnessy Dam , creating Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. This 1,900-acre lake in the middle of the National Park supplies San Francisco with over 85% of its drinking water, along with a modest amount of electrical power. The dam was built over the strenuous objections of legendary conservationist John Muir, and environmentalists have deplored its existence ever since.

Tuolumne River Management Plan
The National Park Service (NPS) is finalizing the scope of a new management plan for the Tuolumne River under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. This law requires the NPS to preserve select rivers possessing outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geological, fish and wildlife, historical, cultural, or other similar values in free-flowing condition and to protect these rivers and their immediate environments for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.

In 2006, NPS solicited comments from the public, requesting input into the scope for the Management Plan. Rock the Earth submitted a detailed legal and technical comment letter, urging NPS to consider removing the dam as part of the Management Plan, or at a minimum, to evaluate alternatives for operating the dam.

Continuing the planning process, NPS issued the Tuolumne Planning Workbook this July. This document, which is written for the non-technical reader, summarizes the options currently under consideration and requests further comments from the public. The Workbook does not propose to consider the management of the dam, or its removal, as part of the Management Plan.

Rock the Earth continues to strongly believe that NPS is required to consider the dam as part of the Management Plan. The Workbook states that the reservoir is not eligible to be included in the Wild and Scenic River designation because it is not free flowing. This ignores the fact that the only reason the Tuolumne River is not free flowing through Hetch Hetchy is due to the presence of the dam. If the dam was removed, the impounded segment of the river would be restored to its natural flow, and would be eligible to be considered for protection under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

In our September, 2006 comment letter, Rock the Earth demonstrated that removing the dam and preserving San Francisco's water supply are technically feasible and worthy of further study.

In addition, the presence of the dam clearly affects the free-flowing segments upstream and downstream of the reservoir. For example, lowering the water level could potentially reclaim a portion of the river upstream of the reservoir. Apart from the option of removing the dam entirely, NPS should consider alternatives for operating the dam in order to fully assess its impacts on the river and its outstandingly remarkable values.

Get Involved!
NPS is accepting comments from the public through September 15. We encourage our friends and members to participate in the public discussion on the future of this natural wonder. If you believe that removing or altering the operation of O'Shaughnessy Dam should be considered as part of the Tuolumne River Management Plan, consider submitting a comment to NPS. Some points you may want to include:

ÿ Hetch Hetchy Valley represents an outstandingly remarkable value of the Tuolumne River that NPS is mandated to protect;
ÿ Removal of the dam is technically feasible, and, in conjunction with other improvements, can be implemented without endangering San Francisco’s water supply;
ÿ Short of removing the dam, NPS should evaluate alternatives for the operation of the dam.

Apart from issues surrounding Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, the Workbook contains a great deal of information on management options for the other segments of the Tuolumne River within the National Park. We encourage you to download and read this document, and share your thoughts about the management of the river with NPS.

RtE Volunteers needed for Power to the Peaceful in SF September 8

RtE will have a booth set up at Power to the Peaceful on Saturday, September 8. This is the annual free event put on by Michael Franti in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park http://www.powertothepeaceful.org/index.html. This year the lineup includes Hot Buttered Rum, Indigo Girls, and, of course, headlining will be Spearhead.

She lays by water and becomes that which is immortal poetry of cycles and rhymes, holden to the bridge between her childhood and all beyond in which blossoming unfolds with pedals of songs and bees buzz along and justly cry out to their father, “Can’t you hear me, why must I holler?” Every morning of everyday she’d go down to the river to pray, that if today I die, then deliver me by chariot ride far, far beyond these hills and thrills of lazy summer days and the confusion of her youth beckoning with her reckoning of glory.

Daughter of a gypsy, queen of the Nile,
Raised in a backwoods hillbilly, hippy style.
Running around naked in the middle of July,
Sunbaked and educated, learning the reasons why.

Heavy in the humidity, arms out open wide with nothing to do but try. And maybe follow a star or perhaps just a cloud out of town with her mother’s shroud. Illick's Mills' Karen Dolan win prestigious award

(DENVER) - Colorado-based environmental organization Rock the Earth has announced its 2007 Planet Defender Awards, in conjunction with their national Rock the Earth Day celebration. Toronto-based musicians Barenaked Ladies, Blue Ocean Institute President and Co-Founder Dr. Carl Safina, and environmental educator Karen Dolan were selected as the winners in three categories. Planet Defender recipients are nominated by Rock the Earth members and chosen by Rock the Earth's national Volunteer Staff.

Barenaked Ladies, winners in the Artist category, have long advocated for environmental sustainability through their music and actions. Touring for more than 15 years, Barenaked Ladies have forged an international following through their witty, heartfelt lyrics and special relationship with their fans. BNL has recently teamed up with Reverb to communicate with their fans about environmental and social issues that are increasingly important to them. On their recent Fall Tour, BNL fueled their tour buses and trucks with biodiesel, offset the energy used at each show with wind power, and recycled and used compostable materials backstage.

Dr. Carl Safina was chosen as the Community Leader winner. Safina, 52, a native New Yorker and head of the Long-Island based Blue Ocean Institute, is an internationally-renowned scientist and author who has traveled the globe to study endangered ocean species and encourage humans to realize the inherent magnificence and importance of the global seas and its inhabitants. His latest book, Voyage of the Turtle, is a global journey in pursuit of the Earth's last warm-blooded monster reptile, the Leatherback turtle.

For the second consecutive year, Rock the Earth returns to the Keystone State of Pennsylvania to honor our Grassroots Activist. Karen Dolan is a schoolteacher and founder of the Illick's Mill Project in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Illick's Mill was an operational grist mill in the late 1800s and early 1900s and is being restored to serve as an environmental education center for the Bethlehem community. Illick's Mill is a true community organization, with strong involvement from local high school students, community members, and Pennsylvania-based musicians Rusted Root.

This year's Planet Defenders join last year's recipients - Musician Jack Johnson, Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson and Jason Rutledge - and continue the tradition of Rock the Earth honoring individuals who Defend the Planet One Beat at a Time.

To amend the Small Tracts Act to facilitate the exchange of small tracts of land, and for other purposes.

Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,

SECTION 1. SHORT TITLE.

This Act may be cited as the `Small Tracts Reform Act'.

SEC. 2. FACILITATION OF EXCHANGE OF SMALL TRACTS.

(a) Expansion of Availability of Lands for Sale or Exchange- Section 3 of Public Law 97-465 (16 U.S.C. 521e; section 3 of the Act commonly known as the Small Tracts Act) is amended--

(1) by striking `not practicable' and inserting `either not practicable or not expedient';

(2) by striking `, which have a value as determined by the Secretary of not more than $150,000,'; and

(3) in paragraph (1)--

(A) by striking `parcels of forty acres' and inserting `parcels or portions of parcels of 100 acres'; and

(B) by striking `under the mining laws'.

(b) Rules or Regulations Not Required- Nothing in the amendments made by this section shall require the Forest Service to issue rules or regulations prior to any sale, exchange, or interchange under Public Law 97-465 (16 U.S.C. 521c et seq.).

Everyone Orchestra Plans Southeast Tour with Kimock, Coffin & Sipe

Everyone Orchestra will bring their infectiously entertaining brand of improvisational jams to the Southeast next month. The shows will feature group founder and conductor Matt Butler, as well as Steve Kimock, Jeff Coffin, Jeff Sipe, and soulful chanteuse Tanya Shylock.

The impetus for this tour evolved out of Everyone Orchestra’s performance at Smilefest XII in June where Butler, Coffin, Sipe and Shylock were part of the cast which also included experimental guitar legend Adrian Belew, Darol Anger, Jimmy Herring and many more.

EO shows consistently focus on musical juxtaposition and the expansion of experiential boundaries, but as many can attest, the most intriguing aspect of Everyone Orchestra performances is their elimination of the “fourth wall,” encouraging and demanding a melding of audience members and performers in a way that few have previously experienced.

In addition to an impressive musical experience, each EO appearance will include live, on-stage painting by artists whose works will be auctioned to support the efforts of environmental advocacy group Rock the Earth. Rock the Earth is very excited to once again be leading the greening of Jam Cruise 5! The Greening Jam Cruise Program provides educational programs, eco-friendly products, panel discussions and an extraordinary silent auction complete with signed instruments and band merchandise, festival packages, photography, original artwork, eco-friendly products and more! We are also organizing an extensive recycling program, a tree planting program to help offset the emissions of the cruise and a Leaving a Positive Legacy Program to positively impact the islands we will be visiting.

Hundreds of hours of volunteer time are dedicated to making this program a success, and we could use your help! We are working with the cruise line to implement another extensive recycling program to minimize passenger waste, partnering with Trees for the Future on a tree planting program to help offset the emissions of the cruise, planning a Leaving a Positive Legacy Program to positively impact the islands we will be visiting, distributing eco-friendly products and educating passengers about positive choices for the environment.

As part of Rock the Earth’s Greening Jam Cruise program, Rock the Earth will once again be hosting a private, interactive educational program on “Social Change through Music.” Only the first 100 lucky individuals will be able to attend this exclusive event, which will be moderated by RtE Executive Director, Marc Ross, and will feature several Jam Cruise artists and activists speaking about how social issues impact their work as artists. Confirmed artists include ALO’s Zach Gill, Railroad Earth’s Tim Carbone, Hot Buttered Rum’s Zac Matthews, Zero’s Martin Fierro, Perpetual Groove’s Matt McDonald, and other artists to be announced later. Hot Buttered Rum will also provide a brief tutorial on the everyday use of biofuels as well as some musical interludes that are sure to be memorable. In addition, attendees will have an opportunity to taste fine Italian and domestic wines as well as different microbrew beers donated by Colorado’s New Belgium Brewery. This event will be held on Wednesday, January 3, from 3-5 p.m. in the Byblos Discotheque (Deck La Bohème). Tickets are now available for $20 here. Tuolumne River Wild and Scenic Management Plan

Issue:

The National Park Service (NPS) is currently developing the scope of a new management plan for the Tuolumne River under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. This law compels the NPS to preserve selective rivers possessing outstandingly remarkable scenic, recreational, geological, fish and wildlife, historical, cultural, or other similar values in free-flowing condition and to protect these rivers and their immediate environments for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations.

At the present time, NPS does not intend to consider the impact from the operation of the dam on the Tuolumne within the scope of the Management Plan. Rock the Earth believes that if it fails to consider the impact of the dam on the river, NPS will be shirking its legal duties for properly managing the River. Not only does the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act mandate this analysis, but also the original legislation that authorized the NPS (the Organic Act and the General Services Act) mandate that NPS consider the impact from the operation of the dam.

Background:

Hetch Hetchy Valley, in Yosemite National Park, is an area of remarkable natural beauty. One of only four glacially-carved valleys in California, it features granite bluffs, tall waterfalls and grand vistas. Hetch Hetchy was often compared to Yosemite Valley itself, that is, until 1923, when O'Shaughnessy Dam was completed along the western end of the valley, creating Hetch Hetchy Reservoir. This 1,900-acre lake in the middle of the National Park now supplies the City of San Francisco with over 85% of its drinking water, along with a modest amount of electrical power. The dam was built over the strenuous objections of legendary conservationist John Muir, and environmentalists have deplored its existence ever since.

One option that might result from such analysis would be the removal of the O'Shaughnessy Dam. Removing the dam and restoring natural flows to the Tuolumne River would be a big task, but it is technically feasible. In the last two decades, more than a dozen studies have been prepared on this issue, and have clearly demonstrated that there are no overwhelming technical obstacles to restoring natural flows to the Tuolumne River and reclaiming Hetch Hetchy Valley.
Over 400 dams have already been removed in the United States, and the same could be done with the dam at Hetch Hetchy, building upon past experiences. With or without human intervention, the ecosystem of Hetch Hetchy Valley would be restored to its original, natural state in less than 150 years.

Ensuring that San Francisco's water supply is not disrupted would be the most critical aspect of the restoration project. But the water that is currently taken from the Tuolumne River from behind the dam could be just as easily diverted from a new pumping station located about a half-mile downstream from the current dam site. This station would be almost imperceptible from the valley, and would provide for all of San Francisco's water needs in most years, with only a 5% shortfall in the driest years. This minor shortfall could be reclaimed in several ways, including enlarging some existing reservoirs and constructing new pipelines. The City is currently implementing a major upgrade of its water delivery system (downstream from Hetch Hetchy), and several of these projects could be modified to provide the missing water supply.

RtE Position:

On September 8, 2006, Rock the Earth submitted a detailed comment letter to NPS, presenting our technical and legal arguments for the need for NPS to review the impact from the operation of the dam. Further, the NPS must also consider potential dam removal as part of the new Tuolumne River Wild and Scenic River Management Plan, in order to restore this natural jewel to America's premier National Park.

SAN FRANCISCO - A federal judge on Wednesday reinstated a ban on road construction in nearly a third of national forests, overturning a Bush administration rule that allowed states to decide how to manage individual forests.

U.S. District Judge Elizabeth Laporte sided with states and environmental groups that sued the U.S. Forest Service after it reversed President Clinton's 2001 "Roadless Rule" that prohibited logging, mining and other development on 58.5 million acres in 38 states and Puerto Rico.

In May last year, the Bush administration replaced the Clinton rule with a process that required governors to petition the federal government to protect national forests in their states.

Laporte said the process violated federal law because it didn't require necessary environmental studies.

Forest Service officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

The plaintiffs, including 20 environmental groups and California, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington, were pleased with Laporte's ruling.

"This is fantastic news for millions of Americans who have consistently told the forest service that they wanted these last wild areas of public land protected," said Kristen Boyles, an attorney for Earthjustice, one of the groups that filed the lawsuit in October 2005.

Laporte's ruling does not affect about 9.3 million acres of Alaska's Tongass National Forest, which is covered by a separate rule on road construction and other development.

It has been a long time coming (well, okay, under one year overdue) but this year’s Vegoose will feature a charity blackjack tournament. Musicians such as John Medeski and Robert Randolph are said to be possible entrants in the event which will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Friday, October, 27. The buy-in will be $250 dollars, with the winner taking home an estimated $30,000. Proceeds raised from the tournament will benefit a number of charities including the Nevada Cancer Institute, the Common Ground Collective and Rock the Earth. All entrants must be 21 or older and register in person on Friday, October 27 between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. PDT.

Rock the Earth Benefit in San Francisco Sunday, Sept. 17

Gone Global Productions will be putting on a FREE Rock the Earth benefit show on Sunday, Sept. 17 from 11:30-6:30pm at the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in San Francisco. Confirmed talent includes Blue Turtle Seduction, The Trespassers, and David Gans is forming an all-star band with: Rowan Brothers and Robin Sylvester (Ratdog), and Adam Perry on drums. More bands TBA in the coming weeks so stay tuned!

This will be a family event so bring the kids! Rainbow Montessori preschool is sponsoring a global childrens village with free
arts and crafts, music workshops and creative movement. There will be food vendors as well serving delicious organic food.

RtE is getting ready for another big summer tour of fundraising, outreach & education! This year we're joining Dave Matthews Band, Guster and Ray LaMontagne, the Allman Brothers, Bonnie Raitt and many festivals across the country to spread the word about our work on important environmental issues.

As an organization run almost entirely by volunteers, we are looking for passionate and dedicated music fans & nature lovers to help out at festivals this summer.
