You've probably discussed this, but I'm new. So signpost me where I need to go... I know that there was alledgedly a stadium going to be built according to a link on Joshua's site, but does anyone know of any real plans?

Wow! I hadn't heard that. That would be quite a task.

    (And welcome to Rollerball, Rusty!)

Yeah, but what a task! Forget the poitical backdrop of the game, just the game itself. As an old and not so bouncy skater boy, it would have been a thrill to play a game based on motorbikes and skates. It sort of got me brainstorming about a whole genre of motor/skate games, it opens up a whole genre of its own.

LOL... I never tried to make that implication... sorry... point it out and I will clarify this.

It was just a sentece somewhere talking about a stadium being built in, yes you guessed it, Houston. I'm not a hundred percent sure it was in your documents. Seems to me, I'm the only person who likes the idea...like the very idea is heresey...love your thoughts on the matter.

IIRC, a Texas investor asked Jewsion if he could license the game rules after the film was release. Needless to say, Jewison abhorred the idea.

Me? I love to see a real match, and the group here have the rules fleshed out well enough for someone to try it. I think that the initial cost (specifically the track and gun) are large enough to deter a small from building the track, which is the hardest obstacle. The equipment is easy to get, and so are the bikes. The ball would have to be custom. And it seems to be a solid core, I wonder how expensive it is to make.

A primitive version of the game (no track / no metal ball) could be played tomorrow, if people were inclined to.

Sure, I understand the people would think its heresy because Rollerball represents the gestalt of the "future consumer society" Jewison pictured. And that is the major problem with the film. The game is so well executed; the message is lost in the spectacle of the game. We are not repulsed, we are not chastised by our enjoyment of sanctioned violence, because the game is too damn interesting, his filming of it too well executed, in contrast with the rest of the film (with exception to the women shooting the trees).

So we are left with the game, not the message. Funny, because inadvertently, the gladiatorial violence Jewison was rallying against is what makes this film memorable.

We are a men's rollerderby team and we've been considering having a primitive bout as a half-time event for a derby bout.

No motorcyles, no weapons, no fascist corporations involved, no metal ball. Less players.

If done clean, it looks fun.

We've been looking at Joshua's site.

I've seen a roller derby before. I don't know what your's is like, but the one i went to didn't seem too.... professional. Not saying the athletes themselves weren't professional, but they portrayed the sport in a demeaning manor. The players were constantly getting in fights, getting mad and throwing their helmets down while still playing and threatening the other players. The stupidity of the refs letting the athletes play without helmets almost floored me. (mainly because I'm a safety nut with my background in paintball) It reminded me of watching WWE or some other wrestling federation on t.v. Completely staged and fake.

Don't get me wrong here, I am not trying to bash on your sport, I've seen videos of rollerderby played in many countries and it looked cool. I imagine it is played better where you are. The only thing that bothers me about rollerderby is how you score.

Here is a video of Japanese "Roller Game" (same thing as rollerderby). They remind me of the Tokyo team of Rollerball, they play with heart and skill.
You must scroll down a little to see the video.

      Back on Topic.
I wish rollerball was a real sport. It wouldn't be that difficult to make given enough funding just to start it up.

The things that would have to change would be
      1. No spikes on gloves.
      2. Basically all other rules covered in Rollerball (Except they would actually be enforced)
      3. More refs to better enforce said rules.

Because the movie portrayed violence without restriction, other physical contact rules would be created/modified.
      And possibly two cannons?

Thanks for the thoughtful post. What does the game gain using another cannon?

          Perhaps nothing

          But, I quote from www.joshuabarbieri.com/roller...all.htm

"What was most frustrating is if Rollerball had a “lap rule” before you could shoot the ball. Many people assume that a team has to make one (or more) full lap around the track before they can shoot. This is because the Gun has a red arrow above it in Zone C. It is not in the other Zone C so we know there is only one Gun. We only see the gun shoot clockwise at Goal 1. We only see the skater move anticlockwise. We see the ball land somewhere between (the red triangles in) Zone B, C or D. so, the Gun only shot the ball in one direction; therefore it was shot toward one goal every time.

Therefore, players shooting at Goal 2 are always at an advantage, because no matter how many “laps” you tack on, it will always be shorter to get to Goal 2. And without evidence of “laps” it makes the advantage even greater, making the game lopsided.

However, the teams stay static at thier goals. They don't change gaols after each attempt. So, I decided (since the gun only fire in a clockwise direction, you can "pretend" its a second gun) to keep the play balanced and to limit interruptions to the game, there is a second Gun."

OK I see your point - make it fair for both teams to catch and score.

My simulator gets around that with an adjustable ball speed (random, to the players) that allows the controller to place the ball into any zone he pleases. I always figured that's why he has a ballspeed display - if it's fixed, why bother?
            • Re: When will Rollerball be a real game?

              Tue, March 20, 2007 - 11:10 PM
I think the reason the ball speed display in the Controller's seat exists is for Multivision purposes. That is to say, if Multivision has a camera in the Controller's booth (certainly a likely possibility...look at all the cameras and different angles in your typical sports broadcast of our year 2007), then surely the fans would want to know the ball speed. Plus there are records mentioned in the movie for Highest Velocity of a Ball When Fielded, IIRC.

Getting back to the topic at hand, it's actually quite close to reality that we now have sports that can result in gruesome/painful death. Even pro football has experienced player deaths as a result of in-game injuries, so it's not that hard to imagine. Even so, I'm sure some smart guy could convince a cable TV sports network to carry live or taped matches. Anybody here remember such TV "sports" as Slamball or Extreme Dodgeball?
