September 12th and 13th, join Rom Deussen in welcoming HELM and Asharah for workshops and a show, plus our very own Thia from Salt Lake City.

Asharah, who can be seen on the Gothic Bellydance DVD's, and star of Modern Tribal Bellydance with Asharah (http://www.asharah.com/dvd.htm) is an amazing dancer. While known for her fusion work, she has also studied cabaret, musicality, and her technique is undeniably strong. This is the woman, ladies, who turned down the BDSS (I love fellow scientists who love their jobs).

Helm, most known as the band who plays for Fat Chance Belly Dance, is coming in a rare opportunity to take workshops with Mark, Ling Shien, and Larry, individually and as a group teaching. They are nationally and internationally known, playing at Rakkasah, Tribal Girona in Spain, and elsewhere. They have played for some of the best in the industry, and are highly sought after musicians and instructors. (www.helmmusic.com).

Thia has won the titles of Grand Dancer of 2006, Headliner Dancer of 2000 and 2005, Contributions to Utah Dance 2007, and was certified in Gypsy Caravan #1 in 2007. She has also studied Classical Indian dance and Tribal as well. An amazing cabaret dancer with more experience than many of us will ever have, we are thrilled to have Thia with us this year.

Workshops held at the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 611 N.2450 East, St. George, Utah. Easily accessible off of I-15. E-mail Rom for directions.

Friday, September 12th:
4:00 HELM--Mark Bell (workshop topic to be announced--settling in final details), $30

5:00 THIA--Tribal and Classical Katak Indian fusion, (a fusion of Gypsy Caravan and Classical Indian movement that gives the best of East meets West), $20.

Learn to add some ethnic and fusion flair to your choreographies and dance. Katak is a beautiful, intricate Classical Indian dance whose grace and elegance adds to any dancer, and we all love our Tribal!

6:00 Asharah. The Sinewy Spine, $30
Strength and Flexibility for Backbends and Floorwork
Maximum Class Size - 10 students.
Experience Level: Intermediate and above.
Asharah has been known for making backbends and floorwork look elegant and effortless. In this workshop, Asharah will lead you through an intense warm-up, then we'll do a series of yoga poses and pilates exercises to strengthen the abdominals, thighs, and back muscles as well as lengthen the spine to prepare you for backbends and floorwork. Students will then spot each other as they try out laybacks, berber walks, and backbends on the floor, taking care of our lower backs and knees as we try these difficult, yet impressive movements. Tips for keeping your spine happy and healthy will be discussed throughout the workshop.

SATURDAY, September 13th:
9:00 ASHARAH, $25
Danse Mécanique
Integrating Elegant and Technical Movement for Tribal Fusion Bellydance
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.
This workshop will help you refine your technique and add elegance to your bellydance movement. While sharp pops and locks are an essential part of the tribal dancer's repertoire, grace and polish are equally, if not more, important for conveying expression and feeling from the stage to the audience. Asharah will lead students through an intense warm-up that will prepare the body for fluid arm-work, well-defined isolations, and dramatic extension. We will drill smooth bellydance movements (such as arm waves, interior hip circles, and undulations) and hard contraction movements (such as chest locks and hip work in various directions), and Asharah will teach a short combination using these moves in a choreography, emphasizing flow and musical interpretation.
11:00 HELM with Ling Shien--workshop specific topic TBA, $30

1:00 HELM with all three members, teaching a choreography that all workshop participants will be welcomed to dance to in the show, $30

2:30 If there is interest in this topic, ASHARAH, $25
Pops, Locks, and Tick Tocks
Technical Tricks to Mechanize your Movement
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.
Inspired by robots, experimental electronic music, and poppin' and lockin', Asharah has integrated mechanical movements into her expressive tribal fusion performances. In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through an intense warm up and then will show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, shoulder rolls, torso undulations, turns, and arm waves into smaller and sharper parts to give your performances a robotic and creepy edge. After drilling these movements, she'll teach a short combination that demonstrates how these movements can be used in a performance. She'll also briefly discuss concepts of electronic music, how it is created, and how to listen to the nuances of music made by machines and computers.

6:00 HELM and ASHARAH show!!! $20 a ticket.
Held at The Space Between Theater Company in Kayenta, Utah. In this gorgeous outdoors theater, where you can see the sun set and the band of the Milky Way, come see Helm, Asharah, and some of Las Vegas' and Utah's best talent. Helm will be playing music from their CD, Spice Box. Tickets are limited to 150 seats, since this is an intimate venue. Kayenta is an art village, so there is a locally owned fantastic restaurant and some shops, but it is not an urban area. This is truly dancing in the desert. Slots are still open for dancing--e-mail Rom for details. LIne up includes Asharah, Rom Deussen, Black Star Dance Company, Maha Devi, and more!

EARLY BIRD SPECIAL if tickets bought by August 25th: All 3 Helm workshops for $75 instead of $90. Both Asharah Saturday workshops $40 instead of $50.

Contact Rom for details, and the website will be up soon!

I will have already learned some basics from the "Art of Bellydance" set. And there is some instruction on zills that I can add to what I already know. So if I can only buy two DVD's at a time for now, I'm guessing that I would benefit most from Volumes One and Four. (As opposed to buying Volumes One and Two or One and Three. I'm also thinking about Gypsy Caravan DVD's and also stuff from dancers like Rachel Brice.
Hi Everyone,
We are looking for dancers for our PIRATE GOTHLA - our annual Halloween Show & Bash at the Parthenon Restaurant! The event is set for Saturday, October 27, 2007 pm.
The show will star LARA ZORN of Atash Maya Dance Company www.atashmaya.com/index.html and www.atashmaya.com/bio_lara.html

There will be a workshop Saturday morning and LaRa will teach some JUICY COMBOS - ATASH STYLE!!

LaRa Zorn first become entranced by the art of Belly Dance while watching, some of the original members of, Urban Tribal Dance Company at the Southern California Renaissance Faire. Only eleven years old and very naïve, LaRa believed that the exotic movements must
have been limited to mothers and daughters of particular cultures. However, years later, at the age of eighteen, she found Cabaret Style classes at the Riverside Community College. Soon she moved on to such well know instructors as Catharae, Amara, & Shahira.
In 2003, she sought out Tribal style classes and, shortly thereafter, found Rachel Lazarus Soto of Devadasi-World Fusion Dance
(a Tribal Fusion dance troupe). After a few months of studying exclusively with Rachel, she was invited to become a core member of Devadasi. During that time she had the privilege of performing at a variety of venues and training with
many different instructors. Outside projects and instruction later lead her to realize her dream of becoming a member of
Atash Maya Dance Company, based in San Diego, with whom she now studies and performs.
In addition to that, LaRa now teaches Tribal Fusion Basics through the Norco City Parks & Recreation Center & can be seen
performing on “Evolution,” a Tribal Fusion performance DVD, with Devadasi. LaRa is also a Holistic Health Practitioner & Massage
Therapy
Instructor.

Re: SW UTAH'S FIRST BELLYDANCE STUDENT SHOW!Today, 6:47 PM
Ladies, this is Marta, our veil vendor!!! If you have veil questions, please ask them! Actually, if you can, Marta, can you make a new post on this tribe as to your sizes, shapes, colors, etc?

Rom,
Reading your post, it brought back memories of the old chat room days when the guys used to as you your stats! *laughing*
Size- Large and round
Shape-depends on what part you are asking about
Color- Um, depends on what I've been dying lately...usually I have rainbow colored hands.

On more of a serious note...I'm so excited to come down to St. George to your little get together. We still haven't decided if we (the students) are dancing yet, but my husband and I are both hoping you are planning on dancing....can't wait.
As far as my veils go, the standard veil is
* 3 1/4  yard x 45" (you can request longer or shorter)
* I like to use either 5mm or 8 mm habotai silk...depends on availability of silk and color
design.
* Colors are up to the customer. I have a portfolio of veils I've done before, but because
each is hand dyed, dye lot changes, and silk changes the colors vary slightly.
* Price is $25 for the standard veil, longer veils will be more money.
You can see some of the stuff I've done at
http://www.miners-peak.com/bellydance (we are updating the site, so be patient)
or you can go to my profile here.

Please let me know if you have any questions.....Marta

L's solo--the shimmy to one side, drop the hip, shimmy to the other side, drop the hip (or you can simply do a figure 8 instead of the shimmy), repeat 2 more times, then step forward w/ the hip twist, figure 8 with hips, repeat 3 times. Shimmy left, shimmy right, shimmy left, omi turn hips around so you turn away from audience. Shimmy left, shimmy right, shimmy left, hands lift above head.
All face audience, snake arms for a moment, then do the weaving in and out to form the line perpendicular to the audience.
With R leading which arm to go with, alternate the slow and fast snake arms, with and without leans.
Shimmy/camel out. Basic Pull-Down step for four, shimmy four, step/twist for four, swoop arms down and up alternating for 4, then turns (REMEMBER, you can go slow)
Finish with right hand extended above head.

SMILE! Phew! You're done!

ALSO, we have the option of black one shoulder tee's (the asymmetrical, you have to wear a strapless bra with kind).

Actually, now would be a good time to say that Neon, your videos are one of the most easily obtainable out here in St. George, for several reasons. We don't have a big bookstore here, and our grocery store does have a few bellydance videos, but they're a bit expensive. At ROSS (the discount department store), they carry your Instant Bellydancer DVD's, as well as one other dancer. At $6.99, your DVD is easily affordable, and an incredible value. So welcome! We're so glad to have you here!
(p.s. to my students--All of Neon's videos are also on Netflix if you want to see them first! Go to netflix.com for details)

This tribe will take a bit longer to start up (the Rom Deussen Studio tribe--no S--was started by mistake when I hit enter too soon, so have it take that one down), and get conversations rolling, but it'll come in time. First off, this is a place for my students to meet each other, and to converse, and to bounce ideas off each other. You can give suggestions for new classes, suggestions for current classes, let me know of scheduling issues, anything at all! Constructive criticism is always welcome, too!
It is also a place for my textile art studio. As some of you know, my work hung in a few museums back home and galleries, and while I can only crank out one or two a year, the wonderful Rebecca Sordia and I have been working together on a few designs by the famous kaleidoscope artist Charles Karadimos, as well as Rebecca's own patterns. They're all advanced cross stitch patterns, and really are pretty awesome. I would be remiss if I didn't mention Golden Kite and their super-cool patterns, but they are horrifically expensive, while Rebecca's are VERY affordable, and comparable.
Finally this is the place for Ratana. Ratana is the brainchild of photographer Roger Wood, and is a soon-to-be-touring bellydance production. Well, "dance," but completely focused on bellydance, with a theme, original score, and custom sets. I'm the marketing and business growth director, as well as costuming for now, Roger is the creative director and complete and utter boss, and we hope to get this show "on the road" shortly. Why it's here--so all of you can see the OTHER side of bellydance--the business and out of costume end, and the art of self promotion of a non-existant budget :) That, and I like tribe much better than bhuz or Roger's website for it (ha ha). BUT, also, so I can get YOUR feedback on things like costumes, what you think would be fair for pricing, what kind of merchandise you'd like to see at a bellydance show, etc.
So, welcome! And introduce yourself!!!
