Hello everyone.
I'm thinking about having a special in Ottawa, Canada.
The event has the goal of having a 5 day workshop where I go over lots of tricks and movements and teach them to the group.
For those of you who do not know. I am a graduate from the National Circus School's Coaching Program. Which means I'm certified as a high caliber circus coach.
I got the idea from an individual who called me last night for a few questions about Roue Cyr stuff, then asked me how to get in contact with Daniel Cyr for some private lessons. But I know Daniel Cyr.. he is not interested in teaching right now. So last night, I was with Daniel Cyr in person, and I asked him how he would feel if I gave a week long workshop under my own name, and he thinks that it's a great idea.
Now, I'm looking to see how many of you would be willing to invest 500$ a day, for 5 days (2'500$) and to travel your way to Ottawa, Canada (2 hours west of Montreal) to follow a Roue Cyr workshop under my teachings. If there is only a small group of you, I think I can accommodate you in my apartment. But otherwise, I could help you find some affordable accommodations.
If you've ever wondered how to perform a certain skill, or felt like you were doing something wrong but couldn't quite figure it out, chances are, I know how to teach it to you, or correct you. It would also be a place to explore new techniques together and hopefully raise the bar of all of our potentials by simply unblocking creative limitations.
Would anyone be interested in this during a week in November of 2009?
Would anyone be interested in this during a week in December of 2009?
Would anyone be interested in this during a week in January of 2010?
Would anyone be interested in this during a week in February of 2010?
Would anyone be interested in this during a week in March of 2010?
Would anyone be interested in this during a week in April of 2010?
Would anyone be interested in this during a week in May of 2010?
Would anyone be interested in this during a week in June of 2010?
Please let me know which of these months you would be interested and I will pick the month with the most people interested and coordinate all of our schedules to have an event with the biggest turn out as possible.
I hope you are all doing well.
Cheers,
Paul

Re: Roue Cyr Work Shop : Special Event!
Fri, October 9, 2009 - 10:03 AMThis sounds like a really cool idea; I have felt for a long time that we needed more ways to get Cyr wheel artists together and I love the idea of a week long workshop. Unfortunately, the cost you are proposing looks really prohibitive. It might be that I am a poor college student, but as much as I love Cyr wheel, there is no way I could afford this. Travel alone would be fairly expensive for me, and I know that I am a lot closer to Ottawa than many others here. I think it's great that you are trying to put something like this together and I wish you luck, but, as much as I would like to, I doubt I could attend myself.

Re: Roue Cyr Work Shop : Special Event!
Sat, October 10, 2009 - 6:30 AMMaybe if there are enough people interested, I could adjust the pricing to be more feasible for people with limited income.
I'm just looking at it from a professional performer's point of view.
2'500$ for the week can be earned in like 2 - 3 shows... Depending on where you perform and how you sell yourself, you could make that back in a weekend's worth of fun in your wheel in front of an audience.
But since you're the first to respond, when would you be available for such a gathering and what price range would you be looking for?
Keep in mind, I'll be sharing very rare knowledge that cost me 4'000$ in tuition alone to acquire over a 16 month period at 83 hours a week without any kind of income since I simply had no time to work while being a student at the National Circus School. Add living expenses on top of that, and the real cost of the information that I'm talking about sharing is pretty huge.
Graduating from the National Circus School's coaching program was the hardest thing I've ever accomplished and it had a total cost of WAY more than 2'500$. I don't want to just give it all away to my fellow roue cyr artist (and market competitors - haha)
So if my marketing classes serve me right... this workshop has to be affordable for the people who want to come out and learn, but it also has to motivate me to compact and summarize thousands of hours of knowledge, research and experience to hand it all over efficiently in a neat little week long platter.
Also, I'm not sure if you've ever taken private lessons before, but they are usually quite expensive. I know they were in my experiences of when I got some private lessons. It's investment into your career by choosing to learn from the experts who know how to make the learning process simplified and more efficient for you.
So, Stephen, any ideas on how I should price this event so that people come on out?
Looking forward to hear what you have to say.
Paul

Re: Roue Cyr Work Shop : Special Event!
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 10:05 AMI suppose the pricing you set should depend on what you are trying to do with this event. If you want to run this as a way to make more money and you can make $2,500 in a week from doing two or three show's, then you should price it such that you are earning at least as much as you could make otherwise. If that is your intent, though, then I think I would be less interested in this event, regardless of the price; I see something like this as a way of bringing together roue artists for a unique and amazing experience. Most of us, I assume, train alone, so this would be a very cool opportunity, which I would hope justifies the cost of running it; if you wanted to make money, you could do anything, but you chose to be a performer because you love it. I am not a professional performer, so this event would not advance my career any; if I came, it would be because I love the wheel and what can be done with it. I don't see this as a skill I need to carefully guard the secrets of, but as something I enjoy and am happy to share with anyone.
That said, yes private lessons are often expensiveness, so I know that you can charge a lot and not seem out of line. In comparison though, I am a fencer and take lesson from a two time world champion who charges $30 for a half hour. He once did a week long training camp and brought in another world champion fencer and charged $500 per person for the week.
As for how you should price this, it really depends on what you want to do with it. Do you want to maximize profits or do you want to bring people together? As for me, I trying to afford my last year of college and so don't have much money lying around, but would be more available during my winter break in the later part of December or after I graduate in June. Keep me informed on what happens with this; I think it is a really cool idea and I hope it happens, regardless of whether I can attend or not.

Re: Roue Cyr Work Shop : Special Event!
Wed, October 21, 2009 - 5:50 AMHey Paul,
I would be interested n participating in a workshop. At present I am in Hong Kong and will be returning to the US at the end of December.
Not to sound like a wimp, but Ottowa in the winter just sounds frigid. I would say April May or June would be an option for me -

Re: Roue Cyr Work Shop : Special Event!
Tue, November 10, 2009 - 12:48 PMHey Paul,
I think workshops are a great idea and something that'll help push the art / sport / form of Roue Cyr. As for pricing, it's always a give and take, but I have to agree that your prices seem prohibitively high to me. I'm actually planning on teaching a workshop this summer and will be asking for more along the lines of $100 - $200 a day, and you're asking for $500 a day. I've taken and taught circus, dance and theatre workshops around the world for over a decade now and I've never paid or asked for anywhere near that kind of price, even from world famous experts. I totally understand what you're saying about what you've put into it, but still, there's no one out there asking for anything near that kind of money that i know of, so if you want to make it viable, i'd consider lowering it considerably.
in any case, i'm excited to see new opportunities for the roue popping up!
good luck!

Re: Roue Cyr Work Shop : Special Event!
Fri, November 13, 2009 - 6:21 AMThanx for your input David, you know, as always, I really take time to listen to what you have to tell me because for the past (3?) years that we've been talking with each other online, you've always said wise things. You're words have meaning to me and I will put more thought about this.
I'm happy to hear that this idea has been getting support.
And now I'm thinking about May.

Re: Roue Cyr Work Shop : Special Event!
Sat, December 5, 2009 - 10:53 PMHey Paul!! Yes let me know when this workshop happens!! Many if not all of the Cyr folk have a very good point on the pricing of this workshop (in regards to making it affordable)..chew on it for a bit(ponder over it)..but I would love to attend this event!!!
Talk soon!!

Re: Roue Cyr Work Shop : Special Event!
Thu, December 10, 2009 - 7:29 AMYeah, I'm strongly considering making more affordable and turning into something that would be appealing to all those who like Cyr Wheel and turn it into an annual event. Kind of like the jugglers have their World Juggling Federation.. Or Juggling Conventions. We could have this event.
The best part is.. Before getting into circus, I graduated with a major in Event Management.. so I actually know how to pull this off!
I just need time to make it happen properly.
I'm excited about the feedback though.
