Had a chance to swing by the Big Bear Ren Faire (as small as it is) and grab some shots for the portfolio. Images are posted at the link below. If anyone is in the So Cal area and interested in formal portraits in costume, I have the gear and the portable studio equipment for on location shots. Southern California only so my wife doesn't kill me with the gas consumption! If you visit the site, please feel free to swing by the Guestbook and make a comment! Thanks!

Re: Photos from the Big Bear Ren Faire
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 6:04 PMIs that Jack Sparrow? Do I need to punch your arm? Great pictures, though!
The arrival of our new grandbaby this week kept us from Big Bear, this year, I'm afraid. -

Re: Photos from the Big Bear Ren Faire
Sun, August 17, 2008 - 6:15 PMactually we caught the Jack Sparrow show. He read from books he bought at a store somewhere - not even period looking which sucked. But HE was brilliant as far as Jack Sparrows go.
Overall I think Jack was probably one of the more historical aspects about that faire. I wasn't terribly impressed, though everyone was extra nice. The Kmart foldout chairs all over the place kinda ruined the effect - watching someone at an ale stand eating peanuts out of a planters can on the counter kinda ruined it too. -

Sun, August 17, 2008 - 10:25 PMOne thing you will definitely learn about the Big Bear Renaissance Festival is that Historical Accuracy is NOT on the top of the list. It's all about enjoying the day with a Renaissance twist. It's a great little Faire if you want to spend a few hours then go hang out on the lake. -

Re: Photos from the Big Bear Ren Faire
Tue, August 19, 2008 - 3:15 PMEvery small faire has it's own charms and drawbacks. History snobs should take that well into account at all events they visit, but moreso at something of this scale. Beyond that, I don't personally recall ever being told by the BBRF staff (or seen on the site) any particular claim to absolute authenticity. Heck, I don't even recall an attempt to claim "modest" historocity.
I've not been since the Move, but the faire itself definitely had charm. A few local groups would have areas/representatives (Moonridge Zoo springs to mind), occasional RPFS groups would make smaller appearances, and a number of smaller faire circuit groups would come out. Several stage shows - circuit and faire specific - make the trip up on occasion... Boggards, Belles, MWOW, Merry Misfits, I'm pretty sure I remember Sound and Fury one year, it's a pretty good assortment.
It's definitely a small faire. I don't think I'd recommend it if you're looking for a full weekend, but it's great to go up, do the faire, and then retire to local restaurants and bars depending on your lodging.

Re: Photos from the Big Bear Ren Faire
Thu, August 21, 2008 - 4:29 PMThe Moon Ridge Animal Park is an animal refuge which is absolutely awesome. I definitely plan on swinging up there in the near future to check out the wolves, mountain lions, bears, etc. It definitely goes beyond a "zoo."
