I am looking into starting improv class(es) outside of faire. I am looking to see what kind of intrest there would be in attending a regular weekly classes with a small fee to cover the cost of the space. The classes would probably be held in the Pasadena area. If there was enough intrest I would even consider doing two classes a week with the hope of having a basic and an intemediate/ advanced class.
There would also (hopefully) be the opportunity to have regular shows. I am still working out the details. This is all being taken very seriously.
Anybody interested?

Re: Improv Classes
Tue, May 27, 2008 - 8:58 AMdefinately interested. Not sure the kind of commitment I/We could make with new baby and change of work schedule but even if I/We could only attend once a month there is interest here.
Which brings me to the question would you require an ongoing commitment? Would it be each class building in the previous? Or would it be "drop in" so to speak. If it were the case that people could come to classes as they had the time availibility to (beginners at least) you might get a better overall interest/turn out. -

Re: Improv Classes
Tue, May 27, 2008 - 11:58 AMCertainly the beginer class is something I am looking into as far as a "drop in" class. I believe in a different focus in each class so that we would work on one or two aspects per each class, each class being about three hours (with a break). All improv will always build on what came before but you would not be behind so to speak. The only thing that drop in's might get hurt on would be performing. I believe that those slots would go to those come on a regular basis. I also believe that beginers should be allowed to perform if they want to. It is up to directors and teachers to find out a way to make that happen.
For those concerned about time, I understand. I would probably try to set up a Saturday class as well as a weekly night class. -

Re: Improv Classes
Tue, May 27, 2008 - 9:22 AMHi Greg. Yes I would DEFINATELY be interested. My only conflict would be scheduling. driving up from Huntington Beach on weekdays, so I'd be hard pressed to make it there before 6:30-7pm. Weekends are free up until Northern faire. I'm also taking a course at the LA Fight Academy on Mondays in June.
I have no problem with the fee. I was looking at shelling out the cash for the Groundlings course later this year but I think your fees will be more reasonable. Let me know if you'd still be able to fit me in. Thanks!

Re: Improv Classes
Fri, May 30, 2008 - 4:17 PMMy problem with the average Improv class is that it will require me to work in ways that I physically wouldn't, even on the streets. Why would I so far forget myself as to do something physically painful in a street environment? And if I wouldn't do it there, why should I be expected to do it for classes? -

Re: Improv Classes
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 11:12 PMWell improv is about the mental not the physical. Your teacher(s) should always respect somones physical ability as well as what improv level you are at. You should be challenged and gently pushed but never shoved. -
-
Re: Improv Classes
Tue, June 3, 2008 - 10:34 AMGenerally shoved or ignored. This could be because with fibro, my level of ability fluctuates from day to day. What I can do one day may be completely impossible for months afterward.

Re: Improv Classes
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 6:46 AMI'd be interested from the South West corner of the Inland Empire (Corona Area) but for the cost of fuel (curses to fuel prices) .... anyone looking to defray costs with a carpool? I'd probably do the weekend class because I intend to work in the Orange County area and move there sooner than later.
I know the people I live with (that work faire) have no interest in improv classes cuz they say that faire has nothing to do with acting.... :-\
So if you wanna go and can get to Corona to carpool with me - or live along the way to Pasadena from here (up the 71) Drop me a private message.
What are the costs of the class going to be?? -
-
Re: Improv Classes
Mon, June 2, 2008 - 11:59 AMI would bus up for that.
I have found that I am terribly rusty and would probably take from beginner up.
All my improv was learned on the streets of faire.
I'm sure I could learn LOADS from you.
