The Great Plague of '08

topic posted Mon, May 5, 2008 - 9:04 AM by
So, how many folks have gotten this thing now? By 'Thing', I'm of course talking about the really nasty stomache virus that's ripped through 3/4's of Country Garden Dance, Jose', some of the Mongers, and more. I've been fighting it for nearly a week now; symptoms are a general breakdown of the gastro-intestinal tract (with all that that implies), loss of energy, no appetite, and minimal will-to-live. Is this pretty much confined to the denizen's of Guild Ghetto or is it more widespread?

Yeah, the palgue has hit Kids Kingdom later than we would have expected, what with the germy little kids and all. But it has. One Ship's Musician and One Fairy Godmother down with plague, the other with injury.

I have to say the injured yet plucky Morgana took it all in stride - hobbled out to Faire on Sunday and sat in front of our area under a tree. She put a tissue-paper bandage on one of her wings and told her sad story...

"There I was, just mindin' my own business, when a lady with a giant storybook came up behind me and said, 'You're a Fairy Godmother! You belong in my book!' Then she slammed the book on me, but I was quick and she only got my wing."

So there she sat, surrounded by KK folks and little kids. Every once in awhile she would "sneeze" a handful of glitter aka Fairy Dust, thus enchanting the little ones even more. What a lovely tableau she created!

          Gotta love it! Very creative!

Zachary started showing symptoms on Wednesday of last week. I kept him home from Faire this past weekend, and I started showing symptoms Saturday evening. Heather started showing symptoms on Sunday night.

Zachary's appetite is back. So that's about 5 days.
Allie threw up once last week, but that's it.

One of my roommates, who does not work faire, was down with something nasty last week. Threw up every morning, generally nauseous and fatigued (and no, she wasn't pregnant, she checked). I think it went on for about 5-7 days.

Thankfully, so far I haven't contracted it.

I know that Enge was down with it this weekend as well. I will say that, the very LAST thing that *I* need is a stomach virus. Ugh!

ah ha! Mebbe that's what hit me last night....?

It hit the Blackpoint Faire back in ... ummm... '92 and was rerrered to as "Lot Rot" because it mostly hit crew and others who were on site all week.

that was the year that faire failed to pump the privies a fter closeing sunday and durring the winter the site had a gully washer(heaps of rain) and all the old wood privies floated down to the serpentine.so the dust was a bio hazzard.

I know several from our group who got it, including me :(

I'm hoping it goes away quickly. Never any fun.

"Gastroenteritis" is the technical name for what you're probably describing.

When a particularly nasty bug gets into your digestive tract, your body launches it back out...of both ends. 'nuff said.

There are generally two distinct phases to the malady.
In Phase One, you are generally afraid you're going to die.
In Phase Two, you're afraid you're not.

Onset is usually rather quick, usually within 24 hours or sooner of orally ingesting someone else's cooties, and the only blessing is that the worst symptoms usually go away with equal speed, theough the fatigue from the ordeal lasts a bit longer, and is exacerbated by heat and dehydration. For instance, like dancing on hot days, and not drinking enough water.

      Prevention is rather simple:
      1) WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE YOU EAT
      2) DON'T STICK DIRTY HANDS INTO "COMMON" FOOD BOWLS
      3) WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE PUTTING THEM IN/ON/AROUND YOUR MOUTH
      4) WASH YOUR HANDS

Things like the alcohol-based gels are good, but make the effort to find water and soap before meals, and use it. You should be scrubbing your fingers and hands for the length of time it takes to sing "Happy Birthday To You" or The ABC Song" before you stop scrubbing.
(If I hear anyone humming either song while washing their hands, I promise not to point or make fun. Bless you for not spreading cooties.)

      Faire is a magical place.
But bacteria only halt for plain old boring 19th-century science.
Soap and water is your friend.

Yeah, I had a bout starting last Monday, but rallied through with a milder version that lasted about 4 days. Just Sunday back to "wanting" to eat. See? Tha's what we all get for collecting meal cards! The county put a hex on us!!

      BUT.....

The same vicious set of symptoms were going around here at work a few weeks ago, so maybe the meal cards are not the source. Huh?

I minimized cup sharing and smooches this weekend, though I did rub a few sad bellies out of pity. haven't felt tip-top, but also haven't been sick with this monster. If you haven't had it yet, hie yourself to the dairy section and eat some yoghurt, or ask your pharm for acidophilius. Beef up your belly! um, not literally. That probably wouldn't do any good.

All my problems have been upper respiratory...that's why I've been sounding like Rod Stewart on stage the last two weekends...but I'm almost 50% recovered now, thank God, and will probably sound roughly normal next weekend.

My husband is one of the Country Garden Dancers who came down with the Plague. His tummy started causing him problems mid-week last week and he couldn't be too far from a privy on Saturday. He did better on Sunday, but has suffered a relapse and called to tell me he was home early from work because he had to make three mad dashes for the restrooms at his office.

    Get well, everyone!

I'm hoping, stay away this weekend saved me... someone only has to whisper stomach flu...

I feel bad for all my friends... get better. *HUGS*

I caught it too, and had to skip this weekend as a result. Faire is tough enough on my body right now when I'm healthy, but with the pregnancy AND a compromised immune system? No way...

However, the rest did me a world of good, and I'm feeling a lot better now.

If you're sick, though, DON'T come to Faire! There are plenty more pregnant women and others with immune issues that really don't need to catch what you have.

Pregnancy alone can cause enough dehydration concerns.

And those with auto immune disorders, like mine, or other immunity issues, have to live in some fear of catching every little bug that comes along. My family knows, and will attest, that I not only get it more easily, but I get it the worst of the whole family, grandchildren included.

greatest terror of my life was when I told the Dr's office that imodium sped things up on the exit. Their comment was "You don't want to keep it in a let it mutate!"
Really do think that we are depending on the stuff in the privies for germ control. Get to water and wash.
Good luck to all and acidophilus is sold at Trader Joe's now. So no excuses to not repopulate the good flora in your digestive tract.

far be it for me to say..........but its most likely the watter fowl poop mixed in with the pulverized dirt that we are injesting.I live pretty much in the dirt/dust so my tolerance is pretty high. but like the man said wash yer hands, wash yer cups, and stay outta the community food bowl.there are those that dont wash thier hands.

Well, I think I had something resembling this opening weekend. My stomach rebelled Saturday afternoon - I threw up and kept throwing up all evening. I still felt a bit wonky on Sunday morning, but by Sunday afternoon, I was fine.

I thought it was just food poisoning. Guess I was wrong.
