Adopt and Rennie (very long and VERY funny)

Welcome

Congratulations on your decision to adopt a Rennie! Many of these fascinating creatures are in need of good homes where they will be loved and cared for.

While keeping a Rennie can be expensive, time consuming, and sometimes confusing, the results can be well worth all the effort.

A well turned out Rennie who is happy and healthy is amazing to watch in action.

The guidelines below will help you care for your new charge, but they are only guidelines.

Every Rennie is quite unique and you should get to know your Rennie's personal
quirks, preferences and skills.

Introduction

The most important step in caring for your Rennie is selecting the
right one. Rennies come in many varieties. You will find them of both
sexes, and in every imaginable size, color, age, health and plumage.

But, far more important than their physical differences are the
differences in their personalities.

Every Rennie has a very unique
set of skills, preferences and attitudes, and you need to take these
into consideration as you make your choice.

If you have a nervous condition, a Daredevil Rennie is not for you.

Likewise, do not adopt a Fighter Rennie unless you have a large yard
in which he or she can chase around other Rennies with a sword.

If you have small children in the house, you might prefer to adopt a
Rennie other than the Arms Collector, and if you like your nights
silent, keep in mind that Stitching Rennies are known to stay up
quite late, whirring away at their machines, punctuated by occasional
loud bouts of cursing.

Food & Drink
Once you have selected a Rennie and brought him or her home, your
first concern may be, "What do I feed this strange creature?"
Luckily, most Rennies are not picky about what they eat, and indeed,
will consume with relish most anything you offer them.

Do not be afraid to offer your Rennie exotic or strange foods.
They have a highly devolved sense of adventure and will likely at least try
whatever it is.
Keep in mind, that through some strange quirk, your
Rennie will enjoy almost any food more if it is presented on a stick.

Your Rennie requires large quantities of water. Your Rennie will
want large quantities of liquor.

There is a very fine balance between the two that you must find to keep your Rennie (and in cases of more belligerent Rennies, yourself) happy and healthy.

Rennies are very affectionate creatures, and will often cuddle and
love on you for treats.
Favorite treats tend towards chocolate or
nice liquor, though your Rennie may have different favorites.
Recently, several varieties of Rennie have devolved a taste for
Sushi, so you may wish to try that as well.

Sleep
While your Rennie may seem to have inexhaustible supplies of
energy, they need a good nights sleep like any other creature. When
they are having fun, but are exhausted, usually at the end of a faire
day, they may behave much like a 4-year-old, insisting on staying up
and playing, "just a few more minutes." It is advised that you be
firm with your Rennie and insist that they come home and go to bed.

It is also advised that this will almost never work, and when it
does, Rennie goodbyes have been know to take upwards to two hours at
a large gathering. Sit down near the door and have another drink.

Grooming
Rennies take great joy in grooming both themselves and others and
can take hours to prepare in the morning. Rennie females, in
particular will often need the help of others in preparing for the
day.
While they may seem inconsequential or frivolous to you, each
pin, knot, and accessory is very important to your Rennie.
When your Rennie is being slow in the morning, exhortations of "Hurry up!" will
not speed matters along.
"What can I hold/tie/pin/pull/lace?" will work much more efficiently.

That being said, by the end of that self-same day, your Rennie may
be unrecognizably dirty, disheveled and grungy, though likely quite
happy.
While Rennies appreciate and enjoy a shower or bath every day,
like sleep, this is not always something they feel is required.

If your Rennie shows no inclination to bathe after a long day, helping
them undress and drawing a bath or starting the shower for them may
encourage them to get clean.
Please note that your Rennie will take great joy in all their
clothing and accessories, and will constantly want to be adding to
the horde.
Every once in a while, please go through all your
Rennies "garb" with them and help them to let go of pieces they no
longer wear.

Promising to donate the pieces to another Rennie will
help ease the pain of separation, as will offering to replace it with
something the Rennie likes better.

New garb can work as a treat even better than chocolate or liquor.

Under no circumstances get rid of anything from a Rennies garb
without their knowledge and permission unless you want your sweet
happy Rennie to instantly transform into Furious Rabid Fighter Rennie
and attempt to take of your head.

Communicating with Your Rennie
Rennies are extremely intelligent, and will likely understand
everything you say, possibly in several languages. It is far more
likely that you will not understand your Rennie when they are
speaking in BFA, Gaelic, Romany or some other obscure or not so
obscure language.
Also, they can get quite animated when speaking about their favorite hobbies or most history.

The correct response to almost anything from, "I can't do French seams in the gussets in that camica because the twill is too thick to turn twice," to "Henry VIII
and Cardinal Richelieu weren't even alive at the same time, and
France and England were at war in 1620! They can't put the Musketeers
in England!!!!" is a nodding of the head and saying, "Yes, yes, of
course.

There are two terms your Rennie may use frequently that you will
need to be familiar with right off.
The first is a loud exclamation of "HUZZAH!" This is a Rennie sound of joy and excitement, something you wish to hear often. The second is "privy." Your Rennie is asking where the bathroom is, and you'd best show them quickly unless you
want to be cleaning up Rennie messes.

Eliminating in garb can be a difficult and time consuming process.

All other terms can usually be picked up with familiarity.

Your Rennie and Play

Rennies have a highly devoloped sense of play and will often play
any opportunity they get. The idea of what is play varies greatly
from one Rennie to the next, though they will almost always be
happier to play in groups.

Some may enjoy contact juggling, some fencing, some equestrian pursuits, some computer games. However, nearly all Rennies, whether or not they are skilled, thoroughly enjoy the arts of Music and Flirting.

Given a good tune and the opportunity to sing, stomp or clap along, most Rennies will be quite happy. Likewise, what may seem to the untrained observer as heavy duty
sexual harassment is usually two Rennies who have missed each other's
company greeting one another.

Unless your Rennie looks truly upset, it is better to leave him or her alone in these situations.

See more under the Breeding section.

Your Rennie also loves toys. Amongst Rennies, favored toys may be
sharp, shiny, pointy, sparkly, made of wood, leather, metal, pottery
or fur.
Get to know your Rennie to discover his or her particular
preferences.

Illness, Injury, and Keeping Your Rennie Healthy

For some reason not yet determined by modern science, Rennies seem
to have a slightly greater concentration of diseases, which range from irritating to debilitating, than those not of the breed.

Common ailments can include hypoglycemia, fibromyalgia, MS, diabetes,
osteoporosis and a range of bum knees, trick elbows and the like. These will likely only slow your Rennie down, not stop them completely.
Your Rennie and others around him or her are usually well advised on the maladies in the group and will band together to take care of one of their number that is ill or injured, so that they can all return to the fun as soon as possible.
An injured Rennie is for some reason fairly happy.

They do like to show off gruesome scars and talk about their gory wounds. Should your
Rennie become injured, your best course of action is to simply dress the wound, give them a drink of water and then your Rennie will go back to whatever it was doing.

Except in the cases of extreme injury, they tend to be a hardy breed.

To keep your Rennie as healthy as possible, make sure that he or she drinks plenty of water, gets lots of rest and exercise and limit heir consumption of fried food on a stick.

Keep the supplies for dealing with heat stroke, sunburn, dehydration and hypothermia on
hand, as these are the most frequent complaints. Make your Rennie wear sunscreen. He or she will protest this. Make them do it anyway. Make them reapply frequently and when they get burned anyway, make them put on Aloe gel. They will protest this as well. Insist.
While Rennies are extremely intelligent, sometimes they're not very smart.

Breeding your Rennie

Nearly all Rennies love children, whether or not they have one of their own. They like to play with children, talk to children and show children things that interest them as adults.
The adult Rennies overdeveloped sense of play makes them perfect companions for
children, barring a tendency amongst the entire breed to curse.
A Rennie child very nearly is raised by a village and may have dozens of Aunties and Uncles not related to them by blood scattered all over the continent.

Despite decades of observation by many interested parties, no one has yet determined a successful program for breeding Rennies.

Their sense of high drama, passionate natures, and overly affectionate friendships have clouded the issue so deeply that it is still a mystery how they manage to breed at all. So, should you wish to breed your Rennie, it is suggested that you adopt an already mated pair. Even that is no guarantee of success.
You Rennie may have its own ideas about breeding. The best course of action to take should this happen is to stand back and observe your Rennie closely.

In the event of a heartbreak step in and feed your Rennie his or her favorite treats. While this will probably not heal your Rennie, it will make them more pleasant to be around until they find another potential mate.

Conclusion
While the above may make adopting a Rennie seem daunting, it is an
enterprise with great rewards. They are attractive, affectionate creatures, who will brighten your life for many years to come.

Thank you for your interest.

I could not for the life of me wonder why REC would not pay to keep some of there best known acts [Sound and Fury, The Nightwatch Band] then someone sent me this link;

http://stgeorge.kugelblitz.co.uk/dreadnought.htm

It's seams that they do have the $$ but they are using it to build more buildings in Bristol rather than on entertainment here in CA. That more than anything else tells me where REC's priorities are.

Another Passing - Jill Wood

Jerry Wood's wife Jill passed away yesterday after a long struggle with cancer.

Many of you will remember Jerry as a member of the Company of Foote in St. Michael's where he played Captain Stoddard before Frank Licata took it over. Jerry was also integral in orchestrating the chaos of the infamous Chess Game hosted by St. Michael's and Blackshire's Company of Foote in the late 90's/early 2000. Both Jerry and Jill retired from Faire to pursue other activities and to raise their daughter Susannah.

Jerry, Jill and Susannah recently moved to Colorado Springs, CO for the quality of life and to avoid the ever rising costs here in Southern California. They recently purchased a house and are expecting to move into it by the end of this month.

Jerry, while not alone, does not have the support and comfort of many of his longstanding friends from Faire in a time when he needs it. Please feel free to contact him at:
jerry.wood@st-mike.org

Discussions will be taking place regarding a memorial service for Jill here in Southern California in about a month.

Below is an e-mail sent out yesterday:
*********************************************************

It is with great sadness and a very heavy heart that we make this announcement. Just a short time ago, Jill passed on, succumbing to her struggle with cancer.

Jerry, her husband, best friend, companion, love, partner, co-planner, and biggest supporter was present. He had to begin the process of notifying the hundreds of friends and family to all of whom this loss will be deeply felt. Please give him some time and do not attempt to call him. He'll let us all know when he's ready to talk with his extended family and know that their immediate family is huge, many of them are with him now or on their way to Colorado.

Here's the contact information:

Jerry and Susannah Wood
14980 Camprobber Ct.
Colorado Springs, Co 80908
e-mail: jerry.wood@st-mike.org

Their daughter, Susannah, is in the loving care of her grandparents in Orange County, Larry and Ethel, who have taken on the mission of letting her know and of providing her comfort until she can be reunited with her father. She has been told and asked for the company of a close friend here in Southern California while she waits.

If you can find any joy within yourself, express it for Jill; she is in a better place.

Bless those who mourn, eternal God,
with the comfort of your love
that they may face each new day with hope
and the certainty that nothing can destroy
the good that has been given. May their memories become joyful,
their days enriched with friendship,
and their lives encircled by your love.
Amen.

Thank you
But it’s not all hard work. I get to play with my friends every day – and when it’s hot out we love to splash around in the pools.
I hope you guys are doing well!
Wags & Licks, Nisha”

Nisha also tells me that her best friend, Orion (a long haired german Shepard who’s been to faire) has dropped out. Apparently he bonded too strongly to one of the trainers and would howl when that trainer was working another dog. He also learned how to open the kennel doors and would take himself for walks.

Here’s Orion at faire…

from a Clan MacColin announcement that was sent out ...

The Lady of the House died early this morning in her sleep, at her nursing home in Palm Springs. The Taniste and I are busy making arrangements. I'll let you all know whats up as soon as we get it together. This weekend at Ft. Mac Arthur we will be going into mourning. I'll be consulting Clans, Septs and Regiments for whats befitting a Lady of her rank and position. We will be doing a little something Saturday evening after we close. It would be nice if many of you could attend. She was very partial to Silly Wizard and Andy Stewart. S

For those of you who are unfamiliar with MacColin, this is Chiefs wife Crystal.

She will be missed.

Fawnskin Victorian Festival

Hey, all! I'm very excited to announce that the next Belles of Bedlam performance is going to be in just a few short days! We've done faires for the Big Bear Valley Renaissance society before, but this year they're excited to present their very first Victorian Faire! This coming Saturday and Sunday, July 5th & 6th, join the Belles, Sportive Tricks, and a wide variety of other exciting shows and entertainments!

Here is a little more info:

The Big Bear Valley Renaissance Society, Inc. is delighted to announce our first Victorian Festival on July 5th and 6th, 2008, at our permanent site on the north shore of Big Bear Lake!

Hosted in the lovely little town of Fawnskin, the Victorian Festival is a day in Charles Dickens London: a city filled with lively and colorful characters from both literature and history. Come join us for an adventure in this elegant era with hundreds of costumed players in music halls, pubs and dance parties. Explore our winding lanes, finding trinkets and treasures while surrounded by enticing aromas of hearty foods and the joyous sound of music in the air.

Some of the activities will include a Victorian Tea, Tea with the Queen, and readings by Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, and other literary artists of the 19th century. We will have demonstrations of the Gatling gun, cannon, and a battle of the Queen's Royal Army! Entertainment, such as the always exciting (and often titillating) Belles of Bedlam, will also be provided on five stages throughout the day. And, for the younger set, we will have the children's craft & game area.

While not all visitors come in costume, a great many do. The highlight of the event, the Grand Masque Ball under the stars on Saturday night, is a costumed affair, although a non-costumed gallery is available, if you would like to witness the glamorous spectacle.

Hope to see you there!

How do we bring it all together.

This is the first year for me in entertainment. Before that, I was a “Boothie”
What was my concern at faire? Having fun and making money for my booth. While our booth was different… and we got into the BFA etc… most do not.. other than the few words need to sell their wares… Good Day to you mistress etc.
In GENERAL, as a booth worker.. you really didn’t know who the “Characters” were at faire.. you didn’t know the details.. you knew The Queen obviously.. and maybe one or two other people.. who for some strange reason you happened to either be friends with or interacted with because they knew someone you knew. For instance… Booth workers.. had NO clue about the elections at southern this year. I would bet you money.. that unless someone in axe throw.. happened to know Jenny personally.. or knew me… they would have no clue that she is anyone other than one of the Wives. They had no clue that she was involved in SOMETHING. (ok, well maybe if they happened to make it to the front gate show, but really, as a booth worker, I was never able to do that.
People who work the food court, people who sell clothing, people who work the booths… do not go to the entertainment meeting in the morning. They have NO concept of what is going on in that world. How do I know? I have been at this faire for 10 years, and for the first 9, I never knew anything like that. You all know me.. I am not shy… I am usually involved in the goings on at faire… and yet.. I was unfortunately oblivious
How do we get everyone involved? We can’t have a faire wide meeting.. logistically that would be impossible. Many of the Entertainment people… have never seen the morning newsletter, and most of the non entertainment know what is going on otherwise.

How do we become one big cohesive group? I do not mean, one big cohesive group who is all caring about entertainment… because as we just realized.. that is one part of it. But how do we get EVERYONE involved in the entire faire.. as a unit… other than just their own little slice of the pie? MANY of the people who are going to respond to this… are in entertainment… try to think of things outside of your world. I am looking for suggestions… that might be embraced. I am not looking for slamming of any particular group. And to be honest… I am looking for suggestions that might be used by the powers that be.. Northern, Southern.. ANY faire… I will be cross posting this in a few tribes... to get different opinions and points of view

Hey folks!

So my friend Isabelle is moving tomorrow, and she has dumped a bunch of faire clothing, accessories, and fabric on me in her desperation to make sure her faire gear ends up in good homes! Which basically means you get FREE STUFF!

There is one catch-- because I am doing this out of the goodness of my heart, meaning I am getting nothing out of this other than first dibs, I am asking that you try to make this as easy as possible on me. If it is inconvenient for you to come to my house in Santa Monica (I know gas is prohibitively expensive right now), I am willing to consider mailing you a box, but in that case I would ask for you to cover the cost of shipping it to you please.

If you see something that you want to call dibs on, SEND ME A MESSAGE thru Tribe or call me at (858) 699 three four 95, don't reply to this thread please. I will reply with the details to arrange pickup. First come, first served. All of this stuff is USED, and much of it is showing its age (but that's better for peasants, yes?), some of it may even need finishing or re-assemblage. I will try to keep the list updated as people claim stuff.

and I would *really* appreciate your help in getting the word out! It is a Tribe called "Service Animals" and it is for raisers, trainers and users of service animals. One of my goals with this new tribe is so I can learn more about other schools, other types of service animals (ie signal dogs). Also I want it to be a mega-mall of information!

So, if you know someone who is involved with service animals would you be so kind as to forward the link? It can be either on your tribe Friends' list or your private & personnel email lists (business contacts is up to you!). Also, posting it on your blog, your LJ, etc would also help to get the word out.

Thanks! Oh, and once it is up and running, feel free to drop by just to check it out or maybe ask a question....

Cheers!
Cat & Calle

We're doing a one-nighter of "Cyranose!" our award-winning (really!) show this Saturday JUNE 28, at 7pm in L.A. before we head off to Canada, and to Edinburgh Scotland for the Fringe Festival - the biggest theatre festival in the world.

I am told there are no degrees to Unique. Unique stands alone. Kenny Milliken stands alone as one of the MOST Unique souls I have ever met. From 1st Dickens (or before) to the Halcyon days of Agoura and on to occaisional encounters along the way I will always remember his Secret-Self that would peek of of his twinkeling eyes and captivate with a knowing wink.

There is going to be one fabulous Faire in the Afterlife,

I know...figures that I would ask a question about poking....

Of all of my connections, this is the group, particularly those who are in Military/GA's/QueensGuard.....Pax...that might have the answer for me.

I'm looking for a shield that will display a sword on a wall. We need something that can either be customized by the maker, or easily customized by an artist with a logo.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I shoulda taken his picture... but there was a peasanty/piratey dressed guy walkin around at Travel Town today. There were no others, so it's not like there was an event or dress up party... best I can figure is he went to a local(ish) small faire, and decided to go to Travel Town on his way home. That was around 2pm, tho, and about a 2 hour drive from the nearest faire I can think of...

Anyways, it was odd and cool.

I will be getting my next guide-puppy-in-training on June 6th!! YAAAY!
She will be a yellow lab..... they weren't sure if they wanted to put these puppies into the program because of their personalities, so I will be receiving a "special child".... not short-bus special, but difficult to train special.

I thought it would be fun to open up the floor to puppy name suggestions, so here are the rules;
The name cannot be derogatory nor embarrassing when called out loudly (ie. it might be embarrassing for a CEO to say, "Let's go, Lovey Pie")
The name cannot be longer than 2 syllabils.
The name MUST begin with the letter "C"

I do not guarantee that your submission will be used, but each submission WILL be considered!!

Hiya folks,

I'm the purveyor of the Scrabble name necklaces, and I have a bit of a problem. I made a special Scrabble name necklace for Brigitte, also known as Emmy (I think she is one of the ladies of the court). The only rule with Scrabble necklaces is that you have to ask me nicely for one, and I guess the unofficial rule is that you have to come get it when it's finished! Long story short-- Brigitte, where are you? I've got this nifty necklace with Brigitte on the front and Emmy on the back, and you never came to get it! Are you on this Tribe? Does anyone know her? I can mail it no problem, I just need an address!

Thanks!
:)

Improv Classes update!

>cross posted<

Hello All!

I am currently testing the waters to see how many people would be interested in taking improv (or improve) classes in the Pasadena area. I have found an available space in the Pasadena/ Altadena area that will provide both a rehearsal space as well as a performing space.

That's right, a performance space! My hope is that we would be able to have shows at least once a month. These shows would consist of the students to provide them with a real chance to show what they have learned and to keep those skills sharp! Hopefully this will lead a long term improv group forming in the Pasadena area with regular classes and weekly performances.

First a little about my background. I have been studying, performing, and teaching improv for over 15 years. I have worked and trained with the Groundlings, ACME, Improv Olympic, Second City, and Theatresports. I have also personally worked with both Cynthia Szgeti and Keith Johnstone over the years, from both of whom I learned my teaching techniques.

The classes would be held on Saturday mornings at either 10am-1pm or 11am-2pm. I would prefer to have the class slotted for 10am as this leave the rest of the day free for all of you. Each class would be about three hours long and welcome every level of experience from the most basic to advanced. If there is enough interest I will also schedule another class during the week for advanced students, but that will be discussed later.

The current cost per class is $25 per class. However to make it easier on everyone you can pay for a month of classes at once for only $20 per class. This would be due at the beginning of each month. I would also be willing to work out group rates with any of the guilds at faire.

For those of you that are interested or if you have any questions, please contact me at gregdavidjones@yahoo.com including your full name and the best way to contact you. I am looking to get classes started by the middle of this month.

Thank you for your interest. As I said before, my hope is that will become a permanent thing with regular classes and weekly performances and become part of theatre community of Pasadena.

Sincerely,
Greg Jones

I am looking into starting improv class(es) outside of faire. I am looking to see what kind of intrest there would be in attending a regular weekly classes with a small fee to cover the cost of the space. The classes would probably be held in the Pasadena area. If there was enough intrest I would even consider doing two classes a week with the hope of having a basic and an intemediate/ advanced class.

There would also (hopefully) be the opportunity to have regular shows. I am still working out the details. This is all being taken very seriously.

Anybody interested?

I seem to have left a shirt I love and adore on site and last I heard it was put in the hooch at Ale 4. Sadly I sprained my ankle the last night of faire so I never was able to get back and get it, is there anyone I can contact?? I have been trying since faire ended to trace this info down with no luck and wasn't able to get out last weekend because of my ankle. If you can offer any help I would so appreciate it, Thanks!

RUB Reveal

This was my first year participating in the RUB. It was fun! Getting little gifties from someone and figuring out how to gift someone I may or may not know.

Diana, you run one hell of a fun game with it. Thank you so much for your hard work and the effort you put into it.

I was RUBbed by Bryn from St. Cuthbert's. She's one of the not-so-visible members, as she works their kitchen. My final gift was a lovely tealight mirror that I will find a home for so I can watch it glow.

I was RUBbing Sir John Smythe in Court. I will not be so crass as to post his real name, but he is actually a gentleman I have an acquaintance with as his paramour is a friend, so she provided information and helped me to guage the acceptance of my gifts. Upon my reveal, he told me I did a very good job.

Thanks again to Diana, and everyone who helped deliver gifts.

Hey All!

It's only been a week (if you count teardown) and I already miss you!
Yeah, I guess I'm a junkie.

Any way, is there any chance that someone out there has or has seen (and can get me a link) to any pictures of when Lessa & I dressed out in Middle Easterns 6th weekend? We were out running amok (like we do!) both afternoons, and I KNOW there were cameras about...

See, my husband managed to miss seeing me both days, and he's wondering how we looked.

Help? Please?
Thank you!!!

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is a letter of intent to once again take up arms in the practice, drill and study of the European renaissance style of sideswording and rapier. These classes are open to anyone with a desire to learn to use a sword properly and with skill.

The Bankeside Schoole of Defense is once again resuming classes for those interested in learning the serious art of European martial arts. Our beginning curriculum includes the Italian sidesword and rapier with the foundation that goes with this martial art (i.e. balance, line, distance, etc.).

We will begin classes on Saturday, June 14th 2008 in the city of Riverside, CA at 12 noon. We train every Saturday at this location.

If you are interested in learning to properly use that Rapier you own and carry or you just want to learn 16th century style of sidesword and rapier fighting, then I invite you to join with us in preparing and perfecting our personal skills and getting ready for next years events. All are welcome men, women and children (minimum of 10 years of age please).

The Bankeside Schoole of Defense has been in existence since 1998 and is dedicated to the serious art of European marital arts with an emphasis on historical and theatrical movements of the period. Visit our website at www.bankeside.org

For information and directions, please contact information@bankeside.org

Please feel free to refer any questions to me.

http://www.renaissancefaire.net/2008-Irwindale-Video/index.htm

Right now there are 32 of them up on the site. I have about 100 more to do.

I've put them up in two formats: SmugMug high-quality I284 and YouTube.

I hope you enjoy these videos.

So I'm looking at a lot of photos all over the web of us (since we're so eminently photographable) and I'm noticing that there is a distinct "look" to the people who are participants at RPFS compared to most other faires. A richness, a variety, and a complexity of costume and accoutrements that sets us apart.

So a big shout-out to Freida, to her minions, to the ENT and to all of you... you rule.

There are a little over 34,000 pictures from this season.

Now I've got about a hundred videos to post, then I'm more or less done for this faire.

This has been an exciting year for our Bankeside Schoole as we have had numerous Apprentices play for the prize and rank of Scholar within our school. We have also had one of our own Scholars join the rank of Free Scholar as well.

Ms Michelle Jensen

Mr. Dan Pedelaborde of The Gentlemen Adventurers

Hey Everybody

This weekend I lost my pipe and my pale moon necklace at Faire. I lost my pipe around queens stage. It has a bamboo stem and a clay colored bowl. I also lost my pale moon necklace somewhere between parking and when I took my bag off in guild ghetto. Its a black Jack o Lantern with CMC initials on the back of it.

Also ( I lost so much this weekend), my fiance lost her spoon on site somewhere. Now I know it's just a spoon, but it's VERY colorful and made out of (i forget the wood, it's special wood) and was a gift.

So if anyone has seen any of these or has them, you can drop them off at the Privateers hooch or to any one of them or me if you see us around Faire. I'm going to check lost & found and hope a patron didn't ground scoop them. Thank you all for your help.

As one of the audience members for the "big reveal" gig, I want to offer personal thanks to all who participated - that was one of the funniest gigs I've seen in years. Giuseppe and the Brothers slapfighting. The Return of Toby Scratchit. "You fall on one, then an hour later..."

It was excellent theatre, well played, well projected and DAMNED funny.

As to the results.... Congratulations go to the winner of our Mayoral election, the lovely Ophelia Oliver!
Armed Forces Day - Saturday, May 17th

Ladies and gentlemen,

Tomorrow is Armed Forces Day, first set aside on May 17, 1949 by Harry S Truman to recognize the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense, and to acknowledge the extraordinary dedication of America's uniformed Patriots standing ready in harm's way at home and around the world.

Last year my mother and I gave as many active military patrons and participants as we could find our personal thanks and a red carnation favor. We had no idea how much of an impact it would have.

So we're doing it again this year, only with more durable ribbon favors. PLEASE, if you see someone tomorrow who 'fits the profile,' be bold and verify it, and then tell them to look for either me [Melissa Peeling with the Belles of Bedlam] or my mom [Dowager Baroness Stafford with the Queen's Court]. And if you see anyone wearing a red, white and blue ribbon favor with a gold star in the center, PLEASE thank them for their service!

Incidentally, last year I had a number of people tell me they had relatives serving, and ask if they could have a flower. Since our supplies were limited, and I really wanted to make sure we had enough for the military folk, I had to refuse. This year we've created a VERY LIMITED number of favors that include a yellow ribbon rosette. These are only for those who have a son, daughter, husband, wife, father or mother serving abroad. If that applies to you, and you wish to display it, come find me.

THANK YOU!!!

*takes off stage manager hat, takes off badge, sets them aside*
<soapbox>

I know the last weekend is here. And many MANY pranks are probably being planned.

There is an understanding when you are doing a show on stage, that while pranks are fine, they should be transparent to the audience. You would not want to go to the closing night of Wicked to see Elphaba come out in a teddy bear outfit. I don't see our show as very different from those. The audience should see the same show on last weekend as they saw on any previous weekend.

We already have grand ring out, that is VERY different for the show. It leaves many first time visitors confused, and has been mentioned to me from outsiders as the reason they have not returned.

I'd like to point out that this is a PERSONAL statement, and has NOTHING to do with an official line, not the opinions of ANYONE other than me, not the opinion of the company or any of the staff. This is just me and my personal thoughts and peeves.

<\soapbox>
*tries to remember where he put down his bade and hat...*

I was talking to a friend of mine yesterday who is a quilter... and we had a thought...

Many many of us have been cared for by Don Brown... whether it was having his chai first thing in the morning, or last thing at night... being fed when we didn't have the $$... and having his smile...

As I wrote before, he is undergoing Chemo, and our thought was to have a quilt with our warm wishes...

Sooooooooo to get the ball rolling, I will have 4 inch fabric squares available for folk to write something upon with a fabric pen... This weekend, and next weekend... possibly (probably) closing weekend... come and find me at St. Cuthberts... and decorate a square!

I'm wondering if there is anyone who lives out Santa Monica way who might be able to give me a ride home on Sunday night after closing? You will save my boyfriend from having to drive back out to fetch me from Irwindale (2 hour round trip kinda sucks!). Happy to kick in for gas $$.

Thanks!

Hee! Now that I have your attention … are there any men out there interested in helping a girl out? Here’s the deal: one of the women in our camp has gone above and beyond and we’d like to have a little fun with her and say thank you. All that would be needed from you is being able to come to MacColin and deliver something. That’s it.

We’re looking to make this an all day event, with as many men that I can get to come into camp, deliver something to her, then leave. If you’re interested, please message me privately and I’ll give more details.

(And you MacColin people on this board – shhhhh. She’s not part of Tribe, so don’t go blabbing about this over on our msn board.)

I'd just like to say a huge thanks to the owner of the Ale V flag in the parking lot!! Every time I come out, I orient myself to your flag, and can find my car at the end of the day! (That lot would be (and has been!) a nightmare without you!)
May you never go home before me! :)

Hi everyone!

I know that you all heard about Saturday night, and if not, you saw the ENTIRE IRWINDALE police and fire force show up to get me. I am not dead. My head did not fall off, get put in a cooler, and replaced on my neck. I did not break my collar bone. I did not re-break my back. I was not in labor. But all wonderful and very interesting stories.

In all seriousness, I thank you ALL for your concern and assistance. I am alive and well. My shoulder merely popped out of its proper alignment. I didn't drop the child. I wasn't doing any sort of acrobatics, just trying to walk to my car and having carried that little man (yes, the very same one who had run away from his father that afternoon)...for FAR too long that day. I finally told him I needed to put him down. Upon reaching the ground, my shoulder left its happy home, and then the fun came.

First the on-site assistance, thank you all very much. I think even a brain surgeon stopped to help ;)
Then the fire brigade...thank, you all very much too.
Then the Irwindale paramedics...you were my favorite. Although you hurt me greatly putting me on the gurney, you also started the IV that made it possible for me to stop screaming.

Got to the Emergency Room...lots of X-rays and questions later, and several hours...I might add (not that I could tell, or cared...I was...very well medicated), they knocked me over the head (okay, not really, just another push of something AMAZING into my IV....and THAT knocked me out for a good 10 minutes), the replaced my shoulder into its happy socket, and sent me on my way back.

Thank you SO MUCH, Sam, for coming with me to the hospital. What a comfort. Thank you to the (at LEAST) four families that walked by telling me that they had my kids and were taking them home for me.
Thanks to the people who stood around me so that not EVERY rubber neck could get a glimpse of the SCREAMING lady on the ground. Everyone knew it was a wife though...there were words of "There are CHEVRONS down!!! CHEVRONS ARE DOWN!"
Thank you to Paul, who barely wavered at all while holding me up so I didn't have to move.

Yea, it sucked. It hurt, and I'm in a sling. But I'm good. Alive. And I still have my head!!! I love the faire community, though, and all the much more exciting things that happened to me in the stories.

Thanks all! I'm good. :) See you next weekend!
off topic: rental in Eagle Rock

Hey Faire Folk,

This is completely off topic, but we'd love to be able to have renters and neighbors who were from the Faire community that we grew up in and know and love so well. It is a cute little 2 bedroom house in Eagle Rock, in front of the 2-bedroom house that Angela and I share. For more info either send me a message directly, or talk to Angela Allen, director of the Washerwomen. You could probably talk to any of the Washerwomen who have come to property for rehearsal...a few even helped out with the original remodeling a couple years ago.

Thanks,
Todi

A note on thefts

I realize that with things going missing from backstage areas it is much more likely that someone with a pass is the thief or theives. But unless anybody actually has proof of said thieves identities could we possibly refrain from making blanket statements about, "how could one of our own," or "it's a shame that one of our faire family," and so on and so on.

In 20 years of doing faire both north and south there has ALWAYS been problems with items going missing. Yes it is a horrible shame that it happens. But for the love of everything you hold holy can we stop pointing fingers in random directions and making paranoid statements.

All of you have seen non-pass holding people in backstage areas at one point or another while you've worked faire so it's entirely possible that someone from outside of faire is responsible for these thefts. Honestly the faire is not a secure location. People come walking along the back line along the lake every weekend. There's been problems in the parking lots with people whom are definately not part of out family. So stop with the baseless accusations. By all means you should be more vigilant with your personal belongings. By all means should the actual theives be caught they should be hung up by their toes and be made to suffer while we await law enforcement to take them into custody.

Most of all keep an eye out for yoursleves and your friends things and do everything reasonable to keep things from walking away. But let us not jump to conclusions without any proof of whom these low down worthless excuses for human beings are. Enjoy the rest of the season wish I could be with you all for the last two weeks but other life obligations must come first for me.

Thank you.

So, how many folks have gotten this thing now? By 'Thing', I'm of course talking about the really nasty stomache virus that's ripped through 3/4's of Country Garden Dance, Jose', some of the Mongers, and more. I've been fighting it for nearly a week now; symptoms are a general breakdown of the gastro-intestinal tract (with all that that implies), loss of energy, no appetite, and minimal will-to-live. Is this pretty much confined to the denizen's of Guild Ghetto or is it more widespread?

GREETINGS from Port Deptford's Mayoral Campaign in the Arse himself, Downright!

Have you met the Candidates? Have you chosen a Candidate? Have YOU voted!?

If any of these answers are "no", it is my duty to tell you there is no better time than NOW to get the vote out!! You have 3.5 great, diverse and well...rounded...candidates to choose from. Each one with a unique and strong platform to better the town of Port Deptford. Ask any of them and they will tell you.

If you don't know who they are, well let me refresh your memories!

Sir Thaddeus Foote:
A man of Progress, a man with strong business leadership and knowledge. A man who will take the next Foote forward for Port Deptford. A vote for Foote is a step in the right direction.

Don Gussepi:
Don Gussepi is for protection! If you want things to run smoothly on the docks of this Port Town, a vote (or a financial tribute) will make it happen. He's here to make sure things run in the right direction...don't be a wise guy, Vote Gussepi!

Ophelia Oliver:
She's for virtue, she's for progress, and she’s for YOU! *cough* what could define change more for Port Deptford than a WOMAN as mayor. The very leader of England is a woman, why shouldn't Port Deptford be just the same? Vote Ophelia, More women's rights more men in tights!

The Brothers Sty, Larold and Barold:
One is shy, the other is sly...no matter how you put it...they are Sty! Don't let the thought...or smell of these two fine Pig Farmers lead you a stray. The Sty brothers are here to stay. If you think we need a taller Mayor, Larold is your man. No one speaks better for him than your vote! STY!

You can go wrong with any of these fine candidates! So choose one! Get behind them, well except for Larold...that could kill someone. Show your support and get the Vote out!!

VOTE EARLY, VOTE OFTEN!

Downright, Campaign Manager

*paid for by the Port Deptford need for new leadership society*

I was doing some research for this weekend - editing Davies' "Orchestra - a poem of Dauncing". When I cam across this verse:

Thys was the Picture of her wondrous thought,
But who can wonder that her thought was so,
Sith Vulcan King of Fire, that Mirrour wrought,
(Who things to come, present, and past doth know)
And there did represent in lively show
Our glorious English Courts divine Image,
As it should be in this our *golden age.*

===============================

I added the asterisks. But pretty cool still!

Thank you to all who gave to RESCU this weekend. The Rally was a lot of fun and i can't wait to hear the numbers.
in the mean time, i was asked by a few people to put this up here, so for them and for those that missed it, i give you "You Might be a Ren Geek if..."

If your closet for Ren Faire clothes and accessories is bigger than your closet for the rest of the year… You might be a Ren Geek

If you can name five Dukes of Elizabeth’s court, but cannot name your own congressman…

If you can cite which characters shouldn’t be alive during Her Majesty’s second year of her reign…

If you can recite a sonnet that you didn’t have to learn for school…

If you know who Sir Jonathan Davyes is…

If you tried to or were even tempted to correct me that he isn’t a knight, you are right… and you ARE a ren geek.

If you googled the population of port Deptford or any other such info as soon as you found out our town’s new name…

If you know the name of the town we were last year…

If you know that the Bell in Ives is a Stewe or Brothel, and can recite more than 4 other ways to describe it… You might be a Ren Geek, or you might be on Tribe.

If your daily conversation during the week use words like “Gramercy” and “Privy”…

If you catch yourself at work saying “anon” to people as you hang up the phone…

If you consider dirt a food additive…

If you have attempted to collect as many food cards as you can…

If all your non faire friends know to plan their time with you outside of these months…

If that last one made you go “non-faire friends? What are they?”…

If you were excited that World of Warcraft was partnering with Faire so you could lure your WoW guild to Faire…

If you have a World of Warcraft character named after your Faire Character…

If your Faire character is based off anything in World of Warcraft… seek help…

If your first thought upon seeing an item of clothing at the mall is “would Freida approve?”…

If you can do impressions of any of the management staff…

If these impressions are complimentary, you might be a kiss ass.

If you can identify the era a bodice comes from just by looking at it…

If you can untie a bodice without the use of your hands… I know some people that would love to meet you!

If a Sunday night shower feels almost orgasmic…

If you have trouble sleeping without the sounds of moaning in a nearby tent…

If you have trouble sleeping without the sounds of moaning in your own tent… you are DEFINITELY a Ren Geek!

And if you laughed at any of these, or turned to explain them to anyone new…

and yes, i admit, many of these apply to me as well! I had more, but we had a time limit... Feel free to add!

Sunday evening, my GPS was taken from my car in the participant lot...

If someone has it, please return it to the Puritan hooch, no questions asked... or mail it to the "home" address programmed into the device. I really need it, I am lost without it (literally)....

Thanks :(

So whats the deal with these guys? Last year they would show up at the back end of faire and like a lot of other 'street performing groups' ..... I havent seen hide nor hair of them. It's not like I cant see the street. We have a very narrow spot in front of the Inn at St. Mikes. If groups come by doing something, I see them.

Again .... there IS a back area to this faire.....

Oh AND! .....

Hooray for the Puritans for wandering to the back to harass the crowds in Horse Tourney!!!!

Stolen Steins!

Hey guys-
Just letting you know that two Fellowship Foundry steins have been stolen recently. (not lost- stolen.) One was a smooth-finished mermaid stein with bite marks around the lip, taken this weekend from Javelins, and the other was stolen last weekend from off of our very own cart- a hammered dragon stein with a red stone (this is an unusual feature, the stones are usually blue) with the word "MACDADDY" engraved on the bottom, with a blue ribbon and bell attached.

The dragon-stein thief actually had the nerve to come buy our booth with it and say he bought it! Sadly, word had not reached from cart to booth about this yet, and he got away.

If either is found, please return to Fellowship Foundry, no questions asked. If the dragon-stein guy is found, and Foundry is too far, please take him and the stein to Sword and the Rose- they'll know what to do with him. *teehee*

I chide about S+R for the most part, but really, these steins both meant a lot to their owners and if you see them walking around the faire, we'd like to know. Thanks!

Hey Everyone,

Just a quick note...Our town is a port town. Which means the Stewes were perfectly acceptable at that time. The Bell, is not a BAKERY! The Bell was called a bakery the first year we had it, back in 2001, to sort of test the waters, and see how the general faire populace would accept such a place. True, now it's a very tongue in cheek thing, or faire lore, to call it a Bakery....but please....let's call a Stewe a Stewe.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming...

And I am one of the 2008 Mr. Ren Faire Contestants!
do any of these phrases sound odd to you? then let me explain:

WHAT IS RESCU? (from their website~ www.rescufoundation.com):
"The RESCU Foundation is a non-profit organization established to promote and maintain the health and medical well-being of the participants of Renaissance Faires, historical performances and other artistic events through financial assistance, education, advocacy, and preventative programs."

WHAT IS 'MR. REN FAIRE'?:
it is a good fun competition between certain Faire personalities to gather support in the form of donations. The contestant with the most money to hand over at 10 PM on Sunday is declared Mr Ren Faire and gets the privilege of carrying the golden turkey leg (a high honor!).

I will be accepting donations toward my chances all week (paypal info below) and all day Saturday. I am also accepting suggestions as to what my performance/act should be on Saturday night at the rally.

Please allow me to be the channel with which you donate money to this fantastic cause that has helped and is helping many members of my family that is the Faire community. But, If not through me, then through the Mr. Ren Faire contestant of your choice. It is more important to me that you give, than that you give to me!

The details from the Foundation:
"It's that time again! Support the RESCU Foundation and our community by attending the RESCU Rally at the Fool's Stage after faire closes on Saturday, May 3rd!

-2nd Annual Mr. Ren Faire Competition began Saturday, April 26 and will run until Rally Night. Show support for you favorite contestant by sponsoring him as Mr. Ren Faire 2008.

-Silent Auction began Saturday, April 26 and will run weekend days until Rally Night in the Friends of Faire Garden. Item donations are tax deductible and can be submitted to a RESCU Representative, or to the Friends of Faire Garden. Come on by before faire, or during faire for three days of bidding.

-Get involved by purchasing raffle tickets. Raffle tickets are $1 and you can get them at FOF.

If you put your name and phone number or booth number on the ticket, you don't even have to be there to win!

-Commencing event at the Fool's Stage, after faire, Saturday, May 3rd. There will be free food (thank you Marta!), drink, entertainment, fun and support of a great cause.
