Tonight I sing in Alameda!

Hey Friends and Fans,

Sorry for the last minute notice but I'll be performing tonight with Chuck and Sylvia and a few others at Julie's!

If your in the area drop on by :)

Heidi/Kizzy

Details below from Sylvia:

Hi there!

This Tuesday at Julie's we'll be joined by Paul Kotapish and the legendary Mayne Smith on dobro. Mayne has been around the local music scene for ages. He writes funny songs and also sings a mean country blues.

And, for our second surprise: It turns out that the manager of Julie's, Heidi Miller, has a bee-yoo-ti-ful voice. (You've probably seen her at the shop. She's the congenial red-head who works behind the counter.) She and I have worked out a couple of country duets that we'll trot out tonight. We may get her to sing a song or two on her own as well.

It will be a good night to stop in at Julie's friendly tea shop. We hope you can join us.

Love,
Sylvia

Sylvia Herold, Chuck Ervin & Friends

Every Tuesday night from 7 to 9

Heidi Miller

Hey Tribe-friends,

I will be hitting the Eagle's Hall in Alameda (two blocks from my house) Friday June 3rd to check out:

http://www.bigredzydeco.com/

The show is $15.00 and if you show up early you can learn a few dance steps too. I've heard that this is a lively and fun group and I'm really looking forward to dancing my ass off. In case you're not aware, they have a live Zydeco band every Friday and I'm looking to make this a regular thing.

Also, feel free to invite your friends...I'm always up for meeting new people!

Please let me know if you'll be joining me and if not this time...perhaps another time?

We showed up for the Park Show & met the headlining band Mercy Me, a really nice group of folks that know how to shake that thang.

As we started the set the crowd quickly went from 500 to 700 and just kept getting bigger!

All the songs went off without a hitch and everywere I looked I'd see friends and new fans bumpin' and clapping.

Brian & my step-mom Flo were working the crowd, handing out fliers for the Joey B's show and getting folks on the mailing list. Bob of bobsphotoshow.com was snappin' pics and people were cutting loose and dancing all over the place.

After our set we hob-nobbed a bit then bailed to get ready for the main event.

Joey B's is a new club in town so we weren't sure what to expect. When we got there at 8:30 the group at the bar told me that they'd seen us at the park and changed their plans to come see us instead of going to another show. What a way to start!

The sound in there was great and the staff were friendly and really cool. We started our first set at about 10:30 and by 11:00 the place was filling up fast.

The guys from Snubnose showed up after their band pracice and started whipping the girls around the dance floor. More people from the park were their, and all my friends brought even more friends!

By the end of the night I'd danced with most everyone in the crowd and had my share of drinkies.

Thanks especially to Amy Eff, Bob-o, Wes, Randy, Sherrie, Steph, Dave, Steph, Mike, Jim, Michelle, Amy & Robin, Jess, Joshua & Genie and the whole 4th of July crew!

Thanks to the band and Brian.......I had the best time ever!

Luv,

Kizzy

Hey Pleasure Pals,

Just got off the phone with Danny and he said that pracice with the guys went great last night. I'm still in Alameda but take off for Sac. tomorrow morning. I'm so excited about the new songs we're debuting. A Cold Blood tune, a song Ned wrote, Memphis Train by Rufas Thomas and a Freddy King song too.

I'm really looking forward to playing a new venue and having a drink with my pals between sets.

OK, I'm off to do laundry (glamorous rockstar life) and then back home to pack for Sac. See ya'll Friday.

There are a handful of 70s and 80s soul artists who I am not very familiar with. Could anyone recommend an album or two for me?

Luther Vandross

Teddy Pendergrass

The Whispers

If there isn't a good album (or comp.) available, that's cool. Thanks!

Who, in your opinion, is the best blue-eyed soul singer?

I vote for Van Morrison, although Elvis certainly got down with his bad self in the late 60s/early 70s (see his cover of J. Butler's "Only the Strong Survive" on From Elvis in Memphis).

Dusty Springfield had her moments as well.

Also, is anyone familiar with Eddie Hinton? I've heard some good things about him.

Hey Guys, My band has been writing some killer tunes but we are always looking for songs to cover as well. Any ideas for '60s era dance, shimmy & shakin' tunes?

Good cd's to get or artists to check out? I can sing most anything from Etta James to Ray Charles.
All quiet on the Fishy front....

Hey y'all funky Fish Fry Peeps. I've been super swamped at work and big changes have been happening in my personal life....all good stuff!

I'm moving to Alameda in May. So for anyone in that area wish should definately get together this summer for BBQs & Music listening. I'm moving to be with my boyfriend & to pursue the music thing full time so if anyone has suggestions of clubs to check out or contact, let me know!

Anyone see any good shows lately? Pick up any smokin' CD's?

One of My all time favorites is the 2cd set LEGACY by Art & Aaron Neville.

If you are only familiar w/ Modern Aaron & "Meters" Art, this cd is full of singles by both brothers individually from the '50,'60s &'70s that I'd NEVER heard before. Most of the Meters singles are there too. I'm not a Neville Brother's (the band) fan..... but this is fantastic. I was just trying to look it up on line but wasn't able to find it. I got it at a Tower Clearance Center as an Import.

Wow, this little tibe is growing by leaps & bounds..Yay!

My wish came true (sort of) DJ Larry Rodriguez has stopped plaing on Sundays at the Distillery & will start playing THURSDAYS in April at the BLUE LAMP here in Sacramento!

Thanks to all who have given such great song suggestions for me & the Pleasure Seekers... I'll be seeking them out for sure!

In April I'll be inviting those in the area to check out DJ Larry on Thursdays and see who wants to meet up at Old I on Tuesdays.

BREAKING NEWS!! This summer I'll be moving to Alameda to live with my boyfriend & traveling back to Sac. to practice & perform w/ the band. I'll be working on my connections in Alameda & the Bay area to get us gigs over that-a-way too!

Anyone know of a fun place to go dance or check out bands over Alameda way?

Anything else to say there people? How 'bout you new members... What do you all do for funky-soulful fun?
We are Non-smoking, no drugs, light alcohol use, mellow guys looking for a guy or girl around our age, student or professional. You get your own bedroom, and share bathroom with one person.

Must be kid friendly, 17 month old boy in the house 15hours a week. Hes fun to be around and not bratty at all. We are cool with having overnight guests as long as they are considerate. Our girlsfriends visit on weekends... Will consider pets, maybe a cat or a small dog (extra $$$).

Rent is $445 +1/3 utilities. Deposit of $200 Drop us a line on my cell (858) 945 - 1465 or email me to come check it out!!!
Aaron

PS - Check out the complex webite at www.homecominglife.com and look up the Carlton floor plan in the "Creekside" complex. It would be bedroom #3

Mardi Gras w/ Zigaboo

Hey Funky Fish Fry People,

DAMN...anyone else at GAMH last night for SF Mardi Gras with Zigaboo Modelsite and his Ahkestra?
They really tore it up. Although less than 1/2 of the crowd was dressed for the part (personally, I dress for every party/occaision) there was planty of great vibes and Zig kept such a steady funk for the rest of the band to groove.
They took a break around midnight, and cleared out half the room, which left lots of dance space for the late night freaks to really funk it up~~~
Just wanting to share my experience...and if/when there are other live funk shows...let's have a fish fry first!

I miss dancing on Fridays w/ DJ Larry Rodriguez!

Anyone who knows me, knows I'm a fool for twistin' & shakin' to the good stuff, old James Brown the Meters, Toots & the Maytals, and all that great Soul & R&B from the 1960s.

Sacramento's DJ Larry Rodriguez plays the best mix but for now anyway, only plays on Sundays at the Distillery in mid-town Sac. I miss when he used to play The Press Club on Friday nights & the joint would be jumpin'! No disco, no crap, just all of the above mentioned killer funk plus Big Maybelle, Grant Green, little Stevie Wonder & who knows what else!

Anyone have ideas of a venue that would work well for Larry? I wanna go dancing on the weekends!

Kizzy - PS - Welcome to Saturday Night Fish Fry!
