WHY TWO RICHMOND HOOP TRIBES????

I'm glad you bring that up....I think Richmond does need two hoop tribes.

Here's the reason Joe and I decided to keep the tribes both active and separate....

Joes has spent the past two years working with Citizens Against Crime, the Boys and Girls Club and others to provide community awareness by using the hoop to bring people together. The primary focus of Richmond Hoopers will always be around charitable and volunteer efforts. RVA Hoop Lovers and the MeetUp group I started, will hopefully feed more ideas and volunteers into Richmond Hoopers.

RVA HOop LOvers is more focused on the individual Hooper. The Hooper that wants to improve hoop skills, needs help from other experienced hoopers, wants to meet up and share flight time, etc.... We might even take a road trip from time to time to meet up with other hoop groups...RVA HOop LOves is more for the performer. It's new and it's open for all sorts of creative ideas for advancing hoop skills.

The separation is clear to me today....but who's to say it might not change tomorrow. At this time, my goal is to build a community of hoopers that just want to be involved in "something"..... the overlap is good, but the separation is necessary for now.

Hope that clears things up for anyone that's been wondering about WHY.....

I'll try to do a better job of making things more clear going forward.

Thanks for bringing this up, Danny

Perhaps it would help clarify things if the other group, Richmond Hoopers, had a different name. Perhaps something that reflected the service aspect of that Tribe. It might help distinguish between them so that people could tell at a glance which tribe they were checking on. It might also help if there were less cross-posts so that the reader didn't see the same posts in each tribe. I'm not sure how to make that happen but perhaps clarifying the purposes via the Tribe title would resolve the issue organically.

Thanks for your input, Caroleeena. I agree I tend to cross post a bit, mainly because this is so new and I'm trying to get the word out about everything as best I can. I'm going to get better about that and also keep event planning comments off both sites. That's been a recent problem and I feel like it causes all sorts of confusion.

I couldn't possibly change the name of Richmond Hoopers. Richmond Hoopers has been around for two years and it's a known name here in Richmond....not just on tribe. I think just keeping the two tribes a little cleaner and more separate, might help. I'm going to work on that.

Some things should certainly be cross-posted, like the hoop making workshops, etc. Those things make sense to have in both tribes. Other things are trickier. For example, do you want new hoopers introducing themselves on the service site or would it be better to direct them to this tribe instead? It sounds like those folks might be better served on this tribe where people are discussing hooping and tricks and workshops.

For me the real issue is the confusion between the names. I often can't tell which tribe I'm actually accessing til I'm in it. It's hard to remember when you belong to 100 tribes, about 40 of them related to hooping. Since I can't tell from the name unless I remember (yeah, good luck with that!?! Caroleeena is not known for her photographic memory!), I end up opening one or both of them to figure out which one I want. I think that might have been what prompted the other writer to chime in also. But I see why you'd want keep the name Richmond Hoopers and I also see why you'd want to keep the two tribes separate, so perhaps there's a way to edit the tribe title without changing it really, a way that would indicate the service purposes of the tribe at a glance, like maybe Richmond Hoopers Service Projects or Richmond Hoopers Serve or something like that. Then you could still call it Richmond Hoopers and that's what people would see first here on Tribe as well but folks looking at their homepage navigation site or new users looking for tribes to join could tell at a glance the purpose of each. You could even start a thread about it and seek naming input from others in the tribe if you're interested in this idea.

It's your decision of course. I'm just throwing out suggestions because, as you know, I was confused also (I had just written to our lovely moderator asking the same question someone brought up on the tribe like, what, two days before it was brought up here?) Anyway, I know it would help YOU if there was less confusion also. Like you, I moderate a few tribes and I find myself shuffling things between them regularly. (e.g., This question about shoes belongs in the Hooping Costumes tribe, not the Hooping Videos tribe.) That can take up a lot of my time and is not one of my favorite parts of moderating. I bet it's not yours either. So know that I'm just trying to problem-solve with you to help out because I fear that, as the tribes grow, the confusion will grow also and you'll find yourself encountering this quandry more and more often. And that just takes time away from your hooping!!!

Good luck girl. Know that I'll support you whatever you decide. Just trying to help! Love love love...
