This is a forum for residents of the Redwood City Centennial neighborhood to connect and share information. It's an easy and free way for us to make announcements, share concerns, and otherwise communicate with each other. Once we get some of our neighbors subscribed, I'm sure we'll be able to come up with other good uses for this tribe.

Getting the word out.
Sat, July 9, 2005 - 12:54 AMSo... to get people involved, I finally got off my butt, wrote a letter, and printed some copies at Kinkos. Now I just need to deliver them.
This evening I walked A & B streets dropping off letters in people's mailboxes. Canvasing is harder work than I thought. I tried not to disturb people in their homes, but I did bump into a few people as they came home or were working in their yards. When I ran into people, I explained what I was up to and tried not to seem like a solicitor. Most people I chatted with were really nice and were apethetic to what I was trying to do. There was one guy, however, who was pretty upset that I put a letter in his mailbox. He stormed out of his house and ran after me to give it back (without looking at it, of course). I tried to introduce myself as his neighbor and told him what I was doing, but he didn't hear a word I said. He just angrily shouted that he didn't want any part of it. Oh well. Guess there are bound to be a few people like that among us. I'm guessing that I went through about 50 letters. If a handful of few people actually read it and sign up here, I will be happy.

Re: Getting the word out.
Sat, July 9, 2005 - 4:40 PMThanks for putting this together, Gadget. We are B St residents as well, though I think at the opposite end of you (if yours is the house near Old County REALLY torn up but looking much better I must say!).
I have been wondering about something like this since we just moved in late last year. There is supposed to be a fruit exchange somehow going on, but I can't get anyone to answer my questions on the email about this. This is something I'd be interested in, since we have an apricot, apple, peach, lemon and orange tree all in our backyard. Now that the garden is going pretty well, we should have tomatoes, beans, and squash to share soon!
Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with one of our neighbors, but I guess there's one in every bunch. Come on by and say hello if you are down our way. We are the 3rd house in from Industrial and would like to meet you & your wife. There are 5 in our house, including our dog Mo, who of course is part of the family.
Thanks again, and looking forward to meeting more neighbors and hearing about referrals. Both my husband Todd and myself grew up in San Carlos, so we are locals and know of a few places (kinda been out of the loop lately having kids and all.....)

Re: Getting the word out.
Sun, July 10, 2005 - 10:04 AMHi Lynn,
Glad to see that I found someone else who is into this.
Yes, my house is the one near old county. It's been a mess for a few months, but it's starting to take shape now. It's really exciting and we hope to have a little open house once we're done to thank everyone for putting up with the noise, mess, and workers. Stay tuned for details on that.
The fruit exchange was something I tried to start a year or two ago, without much luck. I wasn't very successful at getting the word out. I'm hoping that I can cast a wider net by promoting this tribe, and once people are connected, we can get the fruit exchange going. I'll start a new discussion thread for that.
(I think I meant empathetic not "apethetic" on my last post. It's not only a typo, but it means the opposite. Oops)

Re: Getting the word out.
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 4:58 PMOk... I finally managed to get some flyers out to C Street, and Nick distributed flyers on E Street so we're getting there.
I appoligize for wasting so much paper and filling people's mailboxes (I hate all the ads and pizza flyers that I get stuffed in my door), but it seemed like the best way to get the word out.

Re: Getting the word out.
Fri, September 23, 2005 - 10:25 AMGadget,
I got your letter and I think the online forum is a great idea!
It's illegal to open people's mailboxes. That's why you find things hanging from your doorknob or stuck between the door and the doorframe. That man who got so mad may have had a check stolen from his mailbox or something. Some people are very territorial, too.
I'd love to know who your recommended tradespeople are.
