Railroad Tracks

Does anyone know what the plans are for the tracks @ Whipple? I am hoping they will allow access under the tracks to El Camino when the project is completed. I know they are planning to upgrade that intersection to make it like the Jefferson crossing, but do not know when. Does anyone have any information on this? Thank you.

google searches indicate they spent $6,000 on the initial look-into-it phase in 2002, and nothing since; so I'd guess "not for a long while".

I'd head down to City Hall if you get a few free minutes and ask around. they seem very nice and have lots of information accessible about planning that is maybe a bit trickier to find on the Web.

"Grade separation" is mentioned in the Downtown Precise Plan that city officials are trying to get approved. Details of this plan are at:

From what I can tell, this is something that the city would like to do, but can't afford. I think everyone is hoping that Southern Pacific / Caltrain decides to raise the tracks in order to get faster and safer train service.

A search for "Whipple" on the city site doesn't return any info about a change to the intersection:

What's the general feeling about raising the tracks through Redwood City? Do you think that this is something that people in our neighborhood would support?

I think it's a very bad idea: the raised tracks in San Carlos feel like a fortified wall. In that case there's not a whole lot on the other side, but the tracks go right through Redwood City--imagine how Broadway and the train station would feel with a 15-foot embankment there. And on the east side are several areas of town that already feel separated from the rest of the city. Imagine the disruption to all the properties that abut the tracks.

Doing a Jefferson-style underpass at Whipple would be okay, but the idea of raising the tracks makes me twitch. =) I'm not too worried, though, since I don't think there's either money or incentive to do it, even if it's possible.
