RWC Centenial Neighborhood Association - Call for Chairperson(s)!

After many years of service Jan and Judy have refocused their time and
we need to find a new Chairperson to guide the Centennial Neighborhood
association.

First I'd like to give a huge THANKS to Jan and Judy who have spent
countless (and sometimes thankless) hours protecting and improving the
quality of life in our neighborhood. Their accomplishments include
keeping busses servicing our kids and managing the size and span of
the Circle-Star project.

Now we need a new Chairperson. I'd like to communicate this beyond
this on-line community to all the residents of the Centennial
Neighborhood.

Railroad Tracks

Does anyone know what the plans are for the tracks @ Whipple? I am hoping they will allow access under the tracks to El Camino when the project is completed. I know they are planning to upgrade that intersection to make it like the Jefferson crossing, but do not know when. Does anyone have any information on this? Thank you.

Downtown

Anyone have any thoughts on the new theater and efforts to revitalize downtown Redwood City?

There's a street fair to celebrate the recent changes down there on Oct 15th.

What's the best local taqueria?

Ok... There must be 100 Taqueria's within a 5 mile radius of our neighborhood. What's you favorite and why?

My favorite is Nikko's Cafe which is on El Camino near Whipple. They are a bit more expensive than most, but their grilled burritos are the best in town. Their ingredients are always fresh and their meat is top quality. Their chicken and mushroom burrito is my favorite.

Robberies in our neighborhood

Just an FYI, there has been a rash of robberies in the neighborhood (I think at least 4 in ours and more around RWC). They are after small electronics (digital cameras, ipods, laptops, portable cd players), jewlery, and credit cards. They have broken windows to get in and also come in through open windows. PLEASE let your nieghbors know if they are not members of the tribe, so everyone can be aware and stay safe.

Centenial Neighborhood Fruit Exchange

What is it?

The Centennial Fruit Exchange is a program which helps people in the Redwood City Centennial neighborhood share thier excess homegrown fruit and vegitables. It is easy to participate and works entirely through the participation of neighbors.

Why do we need it?

I don't know about you, but when my fruit trees ripen, they drop all of their fruit within a week. My fruit is delicious and I love it, but there are only so many plums, lemons, and oranges I can eat in a week. I tend to offer fruit to my friends, coworkers, and neighbors across the street, but a lot of it still goes to waste. At the same time, I walk around our neighborhood and see different kinds of fruit trees in people's yards and wonder if they, too, have more fruit than they use.

How does it work?

The Centennial Fruit Exchange works via this "Centennial Neighborhood Tribe". When you have extra fruit, simply put it in a box, drop it on your front porch, and post a message to this fruit exchange discussion. Others in the neighborhood will see that you have fruit available and they can come by and pick it up. Likewise, when you ready postings from others in the neighborhood with fruit to share, you can go and help yourself.

How do I join?

All you need to do is sign up for a free account on tribe.net and then join this tribe.

Details

The Centennial Fruit Exchange works out of respect for your neighbors. The following details are fairly obvious, but we'll list them anyway:

o Please include all relevant information in your email including what fruit/vegitable you have available, your address, and any other special instructions or concerns.
o Unless otherwise stated in the email, fruit announcements are only good for the day that they are sent. Please do visit people's homes for pickup after 9pm at night.
o Be respectful of people's homes, pets, family, and privacy when picking up the fruit.

The Centenial Fruit Exchange works because we make it work. Please tell your neighbors about it. Thanks for participating.

Birds in the neighborhood

Has anyone noticed all the bird activity in our neighborhood lately? I'm not a birdwatcher by any means, but since the baby arrived, I have been walking around the neighborhood quite a bit (and at all hours). I regularly see owls (which perch on the 100 block of D street) , hawks (dog fighting with other birds), and ducks (a mating pair flying down E street). I know we're just a short distance from Bair Island (especially by air), but I'm still surprised at how much interesting bird activity we have right in our backyards.

Redwood City PACT Program

I don't know if any of you have heard about the Redwood City PACT program, but I'm currently attending the sessions and they're great.

If you are interested in seeing how the city works, learning about the history of Redwood City, getting to know the city employees, finding out where your tax money is being spent, or just getting a free catered meal once a week, I highly recommend signing up. I've only been to three sessions so far and I can't say enough good things about the program.

Hi! I'm currently a stay-at-home Mommy with two bambinos - a 3 year old and a 6 month old. I live on C Street and was wondering if there were other parents out there who might be interested in getting together during the week for play date(s). I was thinking we could have a regular day/time that we could make as a neighborhood play date time (e.g. Fridays at 12:30 pm) and that we could take turns having people over/hosting. It could be totally casual and just kind of a time to let the kids play and the parents 'hang out' and chat and such. Lemme know if that sounds like fun! I'd be happy to host any time :)
