So it seems appropriate to tell the story of last night's first gathering.
Feel free to add, correct, or comment on bits of the story as you see fit....
Our Fearless Leaders reported considerable difficulties in launching; so I was the first one at the beach at around 7PM. I pulled in--and the parking lots were F-U-L-L. So were the fire rings. Oh--and it was extremely windy down there, the worst I've seen it thus far. And of course, Tribe was down, so Adam couldn't even cancel the event.
After communications with F.L. (that would be Adam) it was decided that I was delegated to scrounge around and beg for space at someone else's ring. Now, I had stuffed an entire Christmas tree into the back of my car, just for fun. So I figured I had a bargaining chip. I passed by several rings, describing my firewood as well as the particular charms of our gang. Who could resist a free fire spinning show? I thought.
"No thanks."
"No, we'll pass."
Shot down again and again. I'm not a good salesperson, especially when I feel like I'm invading others' boundaries (or asking to do so).
Then the last people I asked came running to find me and they said, "We're sorry. You could stay with us after all."
Hurrah!!
It wasn't sober; they were enjoying their beer quite a bit. But at least we were on!
It was a group of about ten young-ish folks who were speaking both in Spanish and English. Luckily, this posed no language barrier for me. I told them about the fire spinners. I noted that they had a generator--!! which was wonderful since ours had apparently fried itself. They were enthusiastic about the DJ, the fire spinning and the extra firewood, since they apparently didn't have enough. I entertained them with my hula hoops for a while.
Finally, backup arrived. Our little party zone began to take shape.
And you know what?
This turned into a rockin' party!!
We even had folks wandering over from another nearby ring. I taught three women how to hoop. It definitely had the feel of they'll be drifting over into our community real soon. (They looked wistful when I mentioned Burning Man, too.) There was a big dance zone in front of the DJ area. The fire spinners were excellent as usual even despite the high winds. Fortunately, the ring we were sharing was right next to a lifeguard tower, which afforded some wind shelter.
The Christmas tree burned brightly, sending out showers of sparks. Lulie showed up with her darling little girl, Bella (aptly named; it means Beautiful, at least in Spanish). Bella wasn't afraid to hula hoop even despite the cold, until she smacked herself on the lip with the hoop, after which sad pouty face indicated it was bed time. Sooooo cute!
Suggestions for next time:
* We need to designate a reliable crew to go down to the beach early and hold the fire ring! As summer approaches this task will become more desirable. Heck, maybe we could just start the party earlier, kind of a dinner-barbeque gathering before the fire show.
* Everyone who is intending to show up, should provide us with their phone number. That way if we get hung up in any way, for example have to cancel or else move the event to anoher fire ring than what was posted--we can call and let you know.
* If anyone has a wind/shade shelter we might consider bringing that.
* As an addtion (not instead of the beach burns) we should consider doing a sober house party with DJ. I volunteer my house. Good points: Huge yard, great party house. Bad points: it's in Long Beach (for some reason people think that's too far, but they'll go to the Valley or downtown). Also the fire spinning would have to occur in the street in front since I hae mulch, dried wood chips as ground cover.
Anything else, guys?
I will be posting the photos I took sometime today or this evening. So stay tuned.

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Tue, April 17, 2007 - 1:38 PMI am definitely in agreeance with all points you touched on. It seems the most important part is to get there early enough to secure that northern pit. Also, communications muct be established prior to the event, if Tribe ever goes down again we need a backup.
What about having the event on a weekday? -
-
Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Tue, April 17, 2007 - 2:43 PMA mailing list might be quite helpful! I also think that rather than having attendees provide their phone numbers, i think you should just provide the phone numbers of the pit sitters/event organizers.
You might also consider using flash mob tactics, so you can, with one email, send a text message to dozens/hundreds of people at once. It works like this. Collect people's cell numbers and carriers. Every cell phone number has an email address associated with it, such as 3235551234@my.cingular.com or 323551234@verizonmail.net or something like that... i don't have the exacts in my head. When you email that address, it shows up as a text message on that cell. So, set up the list ahead of time and then when something changes, you find a pit, etc, you can call someone at a computer and have them blast the list, letting all the attendees know exactly where you are with a click. Technology rocks. -

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Tue, April 17, 2007 - 5:03 PMthere is also a service called textmob which you can text information to 100's of people at once. I will look into the logistics. You're right Lauren we should make use of the technology at hand.

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Tue, April 17, 2007 - 2:59 PMI'd like to voice, that I don't think having it on a weekday is the best idea. I always find weekday events to be less exciting.
Traffic will be rough for people in the valley and afar.
And personally I'm never and excited to rock out on weeknights.
Since the beach closes at 10; us 9-5ers (actually 10:??-6:??er) don't have much time to get ready to get down there.
Also I recall you saying one of the reasons for the sober events was to provide a sober alternative for people who don't want to be around substances but still wanna jam. And I think that alternative would be best offered on weekends were most of the substance friendly parties are happening. So someone who prefers to be in a substance free envirment can still go out of saturday night without comprimise.

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Tue, April 17, 2007 - 3:26 PMFor me, doesn't matter if it's during the week or weekends but I just wanted to add, not sure if you guys have gone out to Dockweiler during the weekends in the summer months... it gets really crazy. Beyond crazy to be honest and fire pits will be next to impossible to get unless it's done extremely early and even then it's not a guarantee. Not sure how we can counter this... if we can. But what's going on there now is nothing compared to how it's going to be when it gets warmer. Imagine it as it is now and increase it ten-fold. I guess we need to start thinking about this as well. -

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Tue, April 17, 2007 - 4:59 PMSeriously... the people we ended up hanging with had been there since 2 or 3 in the afternoon. We should just get someone each weekend who wants to hang out at the beach all day Saturday post up there, because this whole 'show up at 7' thing just ain't gonna cut it.

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Tue, April 17, 2007 - 5:00 PMmaybe another location will be in order? I don't know what that would mean. The size of the crowds seem to be increasing exponentially week in and week out. Perhaps there would be a way to control the influx of people to our portion of the event. Some ideas we have is to have roving "spotters" who are equipped with walky-talkies.
Angel seems to be very knowledgeable about what the scene is like during the summer months so I will direct this question towards her. Do you think that hosting a sober event at Dockweiler is even possible? Let's take Saturday night. If we have sufficient people monitoring the perimeter to discourage people from contaminating the event with drugs and booze. I think we should approach this realistically, we can start scouting for another location that is more friendly to our needs and at which we can go on past 10:30
We will be starting another tribe that is going to be closed to the public. The purpose of this tribe is to discuss this event as well as two other events that are coming up in the immediate future. If you would like to be a part of planning (as an advisor or actual participant) please indicate your willingness on this thread and I will send and invite as soon as it is created. Otherwise, I will just send the invites to those who have already showed an interest in making these events a success.
Thanks for all of your advice and help, keep it coming. -

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Tue, April 17, 2007 - 5:38 PMit occurs to me that as it gets warmer, the fire pit may not be entirely necessary. While it's certainly nice, we could do the luminere (sic, i'm sure) ring and dj table on beach just a bit north, south or closer to the water than the fire pits, maybe even bring our own portable fire pit. A bit of isolation might make us easier to find and keep the intoxicated away as well. We do inhabit a temporary city for a week, why are we so tied to a stationary object? -
-
Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Wed, April 18, 2007 - 6:19 PMYeah, I would say that a sober burn is possible during the summer months. If THEY can get a pit, why can't we? I'd suggested above that we consider making it an all-day or part of the day event.
I totally agree about providing a sober alternative to Saturday night parties. Also, I do volunteer my house. I have a no-drugs policy at my house as well as minimal to no alcohol use (would be none on that night). However I also have a no-meat policy so that would have to be considered.
Yeah, the idea of just bringing our own fire ring slightly farther north might be good. We may have to check with the beach rangers ahead of time to make sure they don't see it and come to kick us off.
Fire is arguably necessary for....I dunno, it's kinda primal, tribal. It draws people together. Ya know, when we just sit there and stare into it...never goes outta style! Plus we can roast (vegan/regular) marshmallows & all. -

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Wed, April 18, 2007 - 6:20 PMOh yeah, and definitely send me the planners invite.
and I like your idea of finding a venue where we can go on past 10:30.
Perhaps one a bit more wind-sheltered as well...? -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Wed, April 18, 2007 - 6:30 PMI sent you an invite, it is a private tribe entitled "Soul Attraction Advisory Board" I think I miffed it up since it is a private tribe the introductory email is not very revealing.
I will resend, also when I have some more time I will take the highlights from this discussion and we can discuss them with all the active and passive planners now on board with these events.

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Fri, April 20, 2007 - 10:31 AMI live close to Dockweiler and might be able to steak out the pit earlier in the day.
I bet that we could organize a few people at a time (more than one, to relieve one another for rest breaks and such) to do earlier 'shift's' to hold down the area. -

Fri, April 20, 2007 - 11:15 AMThere's gon' be steak? -

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Fri, April 20, 2007 - 11:30 AMCool JZ.. we will do all the planning as the week progresses. I am working with some Yoga folks to have yoga, pranayama and maybe some Tai Chi gatherings throughout the day so maybe you will have some company. -

Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Fri, April 20, 2007 - 12:30 PMas for not using a pit in the warmer months... someone may want to research the rules/regulations for dockweiler regarding "fire". i am assuming that at least if we have a pit... it would be considered a legal burn but if we moved away from a pit... could be considered a "illegal" burn. sorry to be such a kill joy and all paranoid lol. I'm just trying to keep the even safe but also thinking about the reactions from the rangers esp if we pulled it out from around one of the pits. As far as i know it's the only beach we can burn on legally around these parts and i dont want to jeopardize it tis all... -
-
Re: Last night's inaugural burn
Fri, April 20, 2007 - 12:34 PMgood point. Better to err on the side of caution. I will get the rules and regulations as they pertain to burning at Dockweiler. The last thing we would want to do is ruin this spot for future events.
