Melusina Wkshops

Hello everyone.

I have just had the absolute privilege of attending one of the wkshops organised by Eleni of Araby BD Academy on the Gold Coast, featuring Melusina of 'Underbelly' from Melbourne.

I could only afford the time, focus & $$s to do the 'Tribal Fusion' wkshop, but there were also 'Intro to Sword' & 'Contemporary Veil'.

Yes, it was a choreo wkshop, but a fun, (often hilarious) sequence that linked original moves & combinations & made you think totally differently about your dance & dramatic expression.

Melusina was clear, thorough & did not expect to drill everyone into perfecting a whole choreo in one session...it was more about 'thinking outside the box'! which was certainly happening when you turned around & saw a whole room of (usually spangly cabaret type women) pretending to be spiders to the tune of 'Lullaby' by The Cure! :-)

If you didn't come away from the wkshop actually learning some new moves (tho I'm sure many did), you certainly came away thinking differently about what can be done under the banner of 'Belly Dance'!
I have now learnt a move called 'The Jellyfish!' :-)

The two performances by Melusina at the concert that night left the audience actually speechless with her dramatic imagination & grace. Yes, I am gushing, but I have just had the very rare experience of witnessing a truly rare talent, who is happily & with absolute technical quality, pushing the boundaries of the whole dance form, from 'Traditional Cabaret' thru the Fusion & Gothic forms.

All I can say is that anyone, ANYONE who wants to improve as a dancer, learn to involve expression, passion & drama in their dance, & witness a truly unique & emotive performer, should try their utmost to attend any wkshop or performance by this beautiful & gifted dancer.

Thankyou Mel :-)

I sadly couldnt attend this time round because lack of money ( husband has changed jobs).
But I did do her sword workshop about a year ago and Im being taught that very same sword dance by Sharon or Princess Shahara of the academy. Its a brilliant dance so different to all the other sword routines around and I love learning a good meaty challenging sword dance. Mel is a fantastic teacher - truly invested in her students and happy to share so much of herself.
I would have loved to do the contempory veil - eventhough I dont like choro based workshops usually prefering technique. Because I am a fusion dancer myself I look up to Melusina as a shining star of inspiration and source of learning. I often watch her performances on the Underbelly DVDS. Last year I wanted to do the Black Sheep workshop but it was too early in the day. Quite a number of workshops Ive wanted to do this year have been on rediculously early in the day. Whats with that? I cant make them because I cant drive for a certain while after taking my medication. There were some as early as 8am at the Raks festival eek!
Elenie said she is getting Mel back next year so I have started saving.

Oh I must comment too - that once in a while a truly gifted dancer graces us with their presence and leaves us in awe. There are so many talented dancers around but every so often someone special appears ;)

        Hi Gurlz!

I'm so glad that my post was able to express some of what I witnessed & especially felt from Mel. Yes, she is someone special.
        :-)

Eleni has just announced that Melusina will be returning next year for another wkend wkshop.
If you can't wait that long (as I can't!) then not only is she teaching at The Aust Tribal & Trance Fest in Sydney, but check Melusina's/Underbelly's website & she is teaching at a Contemporary Dance Festival in Byron Bay in only a couple of months.

        Hello Ravyn :-)
Sorry haven't made it to ur Monday classes yet...Ooops... but soon! :-)
Just over an hour to get there but Uni semester over now so.....
