Fireside Chant at Inspirit Common

Inspired by Ritual Arts' Friday Drum and Dance in South Amherst, Inspirit Common will offer a summertime softer-side-of-the-drum-circle.

Using our voices, percussion, and fire we will create a friendly, familial atmosphere. Come enjoy and participate in drumming, fire spinning, hooping, hang out space and snacks with your community.

Evening Schedule
6:30 - 8:30 pm Women's Drum Circle with August Eve (Irene Baird)
9 pm Open Circle, Firelighting
9 pm - 1 am Sing & Spin, Dance & Drum, Hoop & Hobnob!
1 am Close Circle

Like all good things, this evening will be what you make it. Participate by bringing your drum, voice, hoop, dancing shoes or fire gear.

Snacks and monetary donations warmly appreciated. Bring lawn chairs if you have them. Firewood & kindling for the brazier is helpful!

Special thanks to everyone who attended last year's events. They were some of the sweetest fires of the summer. We look forward to seeing you around the fire again this year.

This is a rain or starshine event! The yoga room will host the evening in case of bad weather. Set your intention to "dry and warm". :-)

Ours is not a caravan of despair.
Join us, even if you have broken your vow
a thousand times
Join us, yet again, draw near, come close..."

Join us for this year's Free Fall Fest Harvest Homecoming weekend in Las Vegas, from October 23rd to the 26th!. Fall Fest is our annual free four day long event, held in and around Las Vegas, and is a community celebration of Harvest and Gratitude....

Thursday October 23rd, join us for a community potluck Harvest Feast of Friends, here at our home, 3132 Shadowridge Ave, Las Vegas, at 7pm. Please RSVP to me at 702-450-0021 if you plan to attend. Please bring your own plates and utensils as we're getting more and more environmentally friendly. Bring your friends, your well-behaved children, your musical instruments, your stories, and other magical surprises to delight and enchant us all!
Come re-connect the strands of our community web as we share the stories of our summers and our plans for the rest of the year. There is no charge for this evening, but please do bring a delicious dish to share with friends as we nurture and nourish each other. No fast food, no meat, please.

Friday evening, October 24th, at the Sound Traxx show room at Palace Station, we will go, en masse, to see JEFF MCBRIDE: MAGIC AT THE EDGE, our full length magic show, followed by The WITCHES AND WIZARD'S BALL! Doors will open at 7pm. We will have special two for one tickets to the show, and entrance to the Ball will be free with your ticket stub! Live dj music from Master Leo Diaz, special midnight ritual, and lots of astonishing wonders await! Creative and festive costumes and masks are encouraged but not required.

Saturday, October 25th from dusk til sunrise, we will gather at the Goddess Temple in Cactus Springs, forty minutes away from Las Vegas. The evening will commence with Desert Moon Circle facilitating the opening ritual, a ceremony of honoring the shifting seasons of the year, and honoring our intentions for the rest of the night's magick... Special altars will be created by Kaya, contact her at moonshadow2@cox.net if you'd like to help create the visual, artistic magic of the night. After the ceremony, we will go straight on into our all-night sacred fire circle, drumming, dancing and singing up the sun.

If you'd like to make a donation of firewood or money to the Goddess Temple, please feel free to do so, but there is no fee for this evening's event. Please remember to bring warm clothes- (the desert gets chilly this time of year), plenty of water to drink and to share, finger food snacks for the food altar, drums and instruments, chants and poetry, chairs and a flashlight. No pets, drugs or alcohol, please.

Sunday evening, October 26th, starting at 7pm, we will gather here at the House of Mystery, for an enchanted evening of Community Relaxation and Re-Integration. There will likely be time for sharing music, magic or other mysteries. Please bring food and drink to share, as well as your plates and utensils, and whatever you need to serve your offering. Please RSVP to me at 702 450 0021 and let me know if you'll be joining us....

We want to send out a huge and special thank-you to Morganne Baum and Rae Schwartz for doing such an excellent job of maintaining the Vegas Vortex site, and to Erin Doleshall for all her help with our graphics and printing needs. If you have special skills that you'd like to donate to the Vegas Vortex, please let us know; many hands make light work for all! It is likely we'll have out of town guests coming to Las Vegas for this incredible weekend; please keep an eye on the Vegas Vortex discussion list and consider opening your homes to friends from far away!

Registration for Fall Fest will be open soon at http://www.vegasvortex.com There is no registration fee for this year's Fall Fest Weekend, but please do register so we can make sure to have enough surprises and goodies for everyone!

We look forward to seeing you all for an incredible weekend of gratitude, celebration and homecoming!

In love,
Spinner, Jeff & all your friends in the Vegas Vortex

Two fire events in two weeks- August 14-17

There are two all night fire events that begin soon -- register now before it's too late.

If you can get to California, Phoenix Fire begins in two weeks (August 14-17). Registration closes in a couple days, so if you're sitting on the fence, it's time to comit!

If Billings, Montana is closer for you, check out Mountain Moon SummerFest, on August 14-17 also. I don't know when registration closes, but it's likely to be soon since the gathering is coming up fast.

Phoenix Fire: Less than a month away!

Dear friends,

It’s less than a month until we gather together to drum, dance, sing,
and journey to transformation! The Council and Staff have been working
hard to prepare for our gathering, and we are very excited to see many
of you soon.

There is a wonderful program of workshops being planned, offered by
talented members of our community including drumming with Bright Hawk,
and dance with Robin Sol. (A complete workshop list will be posted
soon.) Our three opening rituals will be organized by our local clans:
Bay Area Spark Collective, Redwood Nights, and SoCal Sacred Fire
Community – in conjunction with gathering attendees like you, who’ll
participate in ritual planning on site. We’re expecting some fantastic
vendors in the Merchant Village, including an excellent food vendor. And
remember that our reasonable registration price includes three dinners
and a community breakfast on the last morning!

Please tell your friends to have a look at the fabulous slide show of
the gathering by our own Shimmering Wolf, which is now posted on the
firefamilygathering.org web site (look on the top banner for the link).

The next price cutoff is this Sunday, July 20. To help your cash flow,
we will extend the balance due date for new registrations to accept a
50% deposit by July 20 with the balance due by August 4, the end of
registration for this year. We hope that this will help you decide to
make a commitment now if you haven’t already. [Note: if you’ve already
registered, your balance is still due by July 21.]

We’re looking forward to being with you in August!

The Fire Family Council

p.s. Despite the 1700+ lightning fires raging in California, the nearest
to our gathering site are the fires in Big Sur that are over 80 miles
from our camp. Rangers on site tell us there is no smoke or atmospheric
appearance of there being a fire, aside from the magnificent sunsets.

Are there more people out there who will like Fire?

Do you think there might be more people like US out there? People that are perfectly ready to find out about the fire? For whom the time is ripe?

What would it be like if the organizers of gatherings didn't have to work their buns off to get enough registrations for their gatherings? What if the community was so bursting for more fire, that events were truly selling out within weeks of registration opening up?

I believe that there are LOTS of people like us out there, and if they knew about what we were doing, they would get pretty excited about coming Home.

How will they find us? Modern technology!

So the widget has been installed 33 times so far -- and we're just getting started!
Get yours here:

http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/sacred-all-night-fire-circle

You can customize it, make it any size you like, even change the background to fuzzy leopard print.
It's yours to share - put it on Facebook, Blogger, MySpace, LiveJournal, TypePad, iGoogle, Wordpress, or your website! If we all share the fire with our networks, then more cool people can connect in.

Help support the health of our fire circle community. All events with an all night intentional fire circle are welcome to be promoted, live via the widget. Every fire, every flavor, every location on earth. It takes YOU.

Fire is now a widget!

Dear friends, I am pleased to present the first ever

Widget-O-Fire!

The widget is a cool little box that can live on any website, any blog, any MySpace or Facebook page. Inside the box, via a constant RSS "feed", all the latest news, reviews, and dialogue about sacred all night fire circles will magically appear. Once you install it, it updates itself. No maintenance required!

Please feed the fire! You can look at, download, and share the widget here -- it's easy to add to your Facebook or MySpace page:

http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/sacred-all-night-fire-circle

The content in the widget feeds from THIS tribe.net group, Sacred All Night Fire Circle, where all fire events of all flavors are welcome to cross-promote the fire, wherever it may be.

Yes, the content here is public. It always has been!
We're just making it a little more convenient for people to get to it, and feed it right to their fire circle event websites.

But how can I get my fire event to appear on this feed? You can either log on to the Sacred All Night Fire Circle tribe and post it as a topic or listing, or ask someone else who uses tribe.net to do it for you. As the kindly moderator, I do my best to make sure fires get mentioned on the tribe if the organizers don't get around to it. [Especially when folks ask nicely!]

Webmasters of fire gatherings: please support all the fires!
Install the widget, perhaps on your community links page.
If you want to use your own format, the RSS feed is here:
http://tribes.tribe.net/sacredfire/threads/rss
PHOENIX FIRE Rebates now available!

Dear friends,

We are excited! to offer a rebate to those who refer new registrants to the Phoenix Fire Gathering.

While we have spent some money on ads, we'd mostly like to give the money to you - while at the same time encouraging you to spread the word to your circles of friends and family.

We know that in these times of rising gas and food prices, and economic uncertainly, a gathering like Phoenix Fire might seem like a luxury. We also know what a necessity it is to spend quality time with like-minded others, to see the best of ourselves reflected back to ourselves in community. Thus, we are always looking for ways to make it more affordable, to save money, and pass that savings directly back to you.

DETAILS:
For each new person that you refer to register for Phoenix Fire you will receive a rebate of $20. Each new Phoenix Fire attend! e will be asked who referred them. If that person (say, you) is already registered, you will receive a $20 rebate. This will be deducted from your balance due if you've made a deposit, or returned to you as a check at the gathering. You can get multiple rebates for multiple referrals.

REQUIREMENTS:
- You must be registered and have a deposit (or full fee) paid before the qualifying registration comes in. No retroactive rebates.
- The registrant qualifying you for a rebate must be someone who has never attended Phoenix Fire before.

We hope that you will become partners with us in spreading the word about Phoenix Fire. See you around the fire in August!

Hi, We just found this tribe. We've been at this for a while. Anybody else remember the nights of many congas in Gruple Dome, before the Djembes appeared?
Just wondering if anyone here will be at Sirius/Starwood this year. We always go, as we set up the Faerie Garden there.
Blessings all, Beth & Zeeb

SoCal Sacred Fire - San Diego area fire circles!

I am trying to make SoCal Sacred Fire work for my schedule but not sure if I can do it so soon after moving, especially considering that I am already going to be on the road for half of June . . . time will tell. If YOU can be in Southern California during the last week of June, a delightful fire awaits.

www.socalsacredfire.com

If I read the schedule right, there will be two juicy all night fire circles. The site is not far from San Diego and LA!

From Rumi: A poem that reminds me of YOU!

I found this poem last year after I came home from Fires Rising. It's so perfectly appropriate for how I feel. And considering how hot it was this time at Four Quarters (burning sun and heat in the 90s every day!), even the lines I didn't understand last year (the midle ones) suddenly make a lot more sense... Without further ado:

BONFIRE AT MIDNIGHT

A shout comes out of my room
where I've been cooped up.
After all my lust and dead living I can still live with you.
You want me to.
You fix and bring me food.
You forget the way I've been.

The ocean moves and surges in the heat
of the middle of the day,
in the heat of this thought I'm having.
Why aren't all human resistances burning up with this thought?

It's a drum and arms waving.
It's a bonfire at midnight on the top edge of a hill,
this meeting again with you.

(Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks)

Transformation Chant

This is a cross-post from the Vegas Vortex Tribe
For all who are interested:

Here is a link to the three-part chant that I taught at Mayfire 2008.

www.box.net/shared/92vbkyqsk0

I know that it stretches the musical boundaries of what many of us are used to in circle, but when you hear it all together I hope that you'll see that it is not really all that difficult.

It was co-written by myself and by the Lovely (and Talented) Samina Oshun (May her joy be unending!)
It is free to download and share, though I retain all rights for the lyrics, music, and recording.

I look forward to seeing some of you at Fires Rising!

Jay

The lyrics are:

Now is the time for transformation
Here is the place for transformation
Fire is the power of transformation
Bring it to the Fire!

We transform our lead to purest gold.
Transform our lead to purest gold!

Surrender to the fire
Surrender to the flow
Release into the mystery
Feel your spirit start to glow!

Surrender to the fire
It hold the golden key
Unlock the chains that bind you
Dance and set your spirit free!

I've been to several of these before, and always look forward to going back. I just love the energy - the intimate size - the wind-carved red earth - the fine music - the gorgeous chants - the good friends - the spoken word offerings - the expressive dancing - the high level of engagement.

Hello My Lovelies!

My partner in audio engineering/ recording crime has definitely turned me on to something... Check out the you-tube site quoted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5SaFTm2bcac) where you can actually hear this break.

It 's gonna be a hot time in the fire circles this summer, as those of us who WANT TO come to understand the science of what we are dancing, singing, drumming, and loving!
> The Amen Break
> and the
> Golden Ratio
>
>
> by Michael S. Schneider
> M.Ed. Mathematics
> Author of A Beginner's Guide To Constructing The Universe
>
> A student recently asked if I had any insights into why the "Amen Break" is so popular in some modern music. "What's that?" I had to admit that I hadn't heard of it. But when we listened to it, a drum break beat, I recognized the rhythm right away. I'd heard it in television commercials and the music of James Brown, and elsewhere. You probably have too. I became intrigued when I saw an image of the audio waves themselves because I immediately recognized the Golden Ratio in the structure of its timing. And I was surprised to find an even deeper relationship to the structure of the human body.
>
> Click on this picture of its audio waves to hear the Amen Break in a work.
>
> The "Amen Break" is 5.20 seconds long in four bars. It was created and performed by Gregory Cylvester Coleman in the 1960's funk-and-soul band The Winstons in their song "Amen, Brother". (They've never received royalties from the hundreds of bands which have sampled and used their creation.)
>
> A history of the Amen Break can be found here, and the term googled here and here.
>
> A video explaining the Amen Break can be found here.
>
> What I first noticed in the wave picture are the distinct peaks representing the beat. I considered the biggest peaks near each end as the limits of a whole.
>
> Having looked at the geometry of the Golden Ratio a great deal, and its expressions in worldwide art, I have a decent sense of its place along a line. The Amen Break had that feel. For a quick check I used homemade Golden Ratio calipers to examine the peaks. Indeed, peaks pop up at Golden Ratio intervals, as do smaller peaks within them, reminsicent of the fractal structures in nature.
>
> For more exact visual analysis I examined the wave image in my computer, in which I have a palatte of geometric forms and proportions for quickly identifying an object's ratios. Sure enough, Golden Ratio relationships were indicated among the different peaks. Am I seeing things? You decide. But the appearance of the Golden Ratio may help explain its popularity.
>
> To appreciate this relationship between the Golden Ratio and sound, it's worthwhile to consider some of the ideal, eternal, unchanging principles of Golden relationships which can only be approximated in nature, and byartists, architects and musicians. I'm not going to re-teach here everything there is to know about this wonderful ratio since some great websites already tell you everything you want to know, such as this and this. Most pertinently, information about the appearance of the Golden Ratio in worldwide music, such as in the work of the classical composers Mozart, Beethoven, Bartok, Debussy and Satie can be found here.
>
> For our interests, the main principle to appreciate about the Golden Ratio is this: A whole line may be divided in such a way that the length of the whole relates to its large part in the same way that the large part relates to the small part. In other words, the same relationship appears on different scales, comprehending a mathematically balanced whole.
>
>
> This visual linear relationship has only one solution, when the large and small parts are in the numerical relationship of 1.6180339... to 1 (symbolized by the Greek letter Phi). Simultaneously, the whole relates to the large part this same way. Our wrist divides our forearm and hand at the point of the Golden Ratio, and our finger bones form an expanding Golden Ratio sequence. It extends through the entire body (as I've illustrated in A Beginner's Guide To Constructing The Universe and the Constructing The Universe Activity Books). What the Golden Ratio does is provide balance among the parts and whole, allowing a harmonious elegance to emerge among the changing relationships among the parts, maintaining a balanced whole, whether in the motions of a dancer or the growth of a tree.
>
>
> Another relevant point to help us understand the Amen Break is how this Golden Ratio balance expands to maintain its balance. It's a remarkable mathematical truth that when unity is added to the Golden Ratio, the result is the Golden Ratio squared! This occurs among no other ratios. (Try it on a calculator to see that 1.6180339 times itself is the same as adding one to it!)
>
>
> This process can continue to produce an expanding sequence of powers of the Golden Ratio, each power always equaling the sum of its two previous powers. (All this is expanded upon in Constructing The Universe Activity Book Volume 3). So on the computer I simply laid down lengths divided at the Golden Ratio (yellow and blue lengths are in Golden Ratio), and Golden Proportion expansions, to see how many peaks appear simultaneously at Golden divisions. Here's what I saw:
>
>
> Further dividing the whole length (between extreme beat peaks) and subdividing those parts in Golden Ratio relationships results in these images. They don't account for all minor peaks, although in their approximation of the ideal many are very close. But the timing betwen the major peaks show clear correspondence. Investigators of the Golden Ratio in art have remarked that even without "knowing" anything about this ratio, it is what creative people intuitively discover and aim for and express in many media anyway. Its harmonious wholeness and balance satisfies something deep within us.
>
>
> When I saw the divisions and subdivisions of the whole indicate Golden Ratios in an expanding sequence, I immediately thought of the expanding Golden Ratio seen in the dimensions of the ideal human body as discovered and used in art and architecture by the ancient Greeks. Here are pictures taken from my books (Golden Ratio Man drawn by Libby Reid) showing a few of the Golden Ratio relationships in the harmonious whole called our body.
>
>
> Because the ideal body's parts are in Golden Ratio relationships (everyone is stretched or compressed) each two levels (beginning at the brow downward) add to equal the length of the next level. I've turned the Amen Beat's waves vertically and put them next to the levels of the human body. It seems to me that the popularity of the Amen Break must have something to do with this appearance of the Golden Ratio in its timing structure. And furthermore, its expanding (and subdividing) Golden Ratios resemble the Golden divisions of the human body but in audible form. I suppose it might appear in music most conducive to dancing. And also singing and chanting, since a great deal of sacred architecture around the world had been consciously designed in the Golden Ratio to make such use of it's self-reflecting internal harmonious relationships.
>
>
> Human bodies and created sounds, like flowers, crystals and galaxies, can never exactly equal any ideal mathematical template. But the major wave peaks of the Amen Break, and many of its smaller ones, seem reasonably close to being an expression of the fractal nature of the wonderful Golden Ratio. I wonder what it would sound like if it was more precisely proportioned to the ideal, but I also know that slight differences are what make it human and alive.

The Current Evolution of the Alchemical Fire Circle

Aloha Friends and Family!
As we prepare for a summer full of ecstatic exploration, sacred engagement and re-union around the Fire, I'm dropping in to share some writing I've been working on, in partnership with Spinner, Magnus and Joshua. As many of you know, we have been collaborating on a unique experiment called "Fires Rising" in Pennsylvania for the last 4 years, that has focused on delving deeply into traditional and modern alchemical metaphors and processes. We're aware that many stories have been told about the magic and mysteries of those fires - and that some of what you have heard may not have made sense. When new visions unfold and new experiments are run, they are often challenging to understand from outside the laboratory in question.

The document; "The Current Evolution of the Alchemical Fire Circle", is a summation of the goals the four of us have had, the learnings we gained over the last three summers, and is an indicator of the direction toward which our collective highest vision has us aimed. The document was written primarily for the purpose of coming to consensus with each other on what our current understandings and agreements are of this particular version of "The Work" going into Summer 2008.

If we haven't played together for a while, this is a way for you to at least get a glimpse into what the four of us have been brewing.

Many of the principles detailed also inform the Vegas Vortex Mayfire and Hawaii Fire Tribe Gatherings, and will be foundational to two new laboratories we are beginning to work in this year as we seed the Alchemical Fire Circle into the Free Spirit Gathering in Maryland ( http://freespiritgathering.org/fsg/index.html ), and the Wisteria Corn Stalk Festival in Ohio ( http://www.wisteria.org/cornstalk.htm ). Of course, we'd love to see you at Mayfire ( http://www.vegasvortex.com ), Fire Tribe Hawaii ( http://www.firetribehawaii.org/ ), or Fires Rising ( http://4qf.org/_FiresRising/index.htm ) as well!
Please visit http://vegasvortex.com/pages/evolutionfirecircle for a .pdf of the article.

Thank you for your interest :)

The four of us remain deeply curious about what learnings are happening among the other diverging and converging events in the Family of Fire, and we hope to read similar reports in the future.

May we all grow our Oneness through Diversity!
Costa Rica photos and appreciation

hi friends

So the fire tribe now has deep family rooted in Costa Rica. The gathering there was a fantastic success in every way imaginable. I've posted a couple of photos on this tribe, of our sacred circle. You can see lots of shots of friends and waterfalls and flowers posted on the Forestdance tribe site.
It is difficult to put into words the magic and love we experienced there together. There is so much life, so much prana in everything there. We will be returning next February, so if it is your will, put an intention on your altars or put us in your calendar, and come down and join us next year. I have been so deeply moved by the land and people there, that I am hoping to spend time each and every year there for as long as I walk in this world.

blessings,
SoulFire Props, a community finding its way HOME.

Greetings!

I hope you are all well.

The DC local SoulFire crew has developed a most harmonious relationship with each other surrounding the concepts of intentional music making, sacred space defining and transmutational shamanic healing, thru esctatic dance, art, rhythm and community. The ease and the grace with which we set our events up and take them down is truly a blessing in my life. This is mostly true cuz it is clear that there is effort and attention to detail by all of us, and that means that there is sustainability in this model. The content that shows up, with invitation is amazing. The Potlucks are more and more delicious, and the take downs are being done in under an hour! There are children, adults, "tweens", teens, folks from a plethora of different paths, and joy in the eyes of all.

i wanted to send a shout out to this collective of fire circle folks to announce that we have found a local site for Sacred SoulFire! YEAHHHHHH.

For the past 3 years we have been doing SoulFire Inside at Seekers Church in DC, developing the experience and intentional community based values of a sacred fire circle. We have wafted around looking for the right place for us to develop a longterm home for our outdoor Fire Circle work and play. While we have been told we "should" go to the same place and "should" be at the same time of year, we have not been able to deliver on that. In principle we agree with the suggestions, but previously we have not found the right spot for us that will enable and support our longterm growth and viability, as one of the many styles of fire circle magic available to those who seek it for themselves.

A few months ago, i sent out some requests to friends in the Frederick area, looking for sites for Sacred SoulFire. I got a couple interesting leads, but it took me a minute to follow thru on them. Recently Bellavia, Leah and myself took a ride up to Hawkwood Farm, and as soon as we arrived on the land, we all felt how things were beginning to fall into alignment. By the time we rode around on the land (it was cold and wet that day) and were sipping on a beverage in the farmhouse, with Erin (the guardian of the land) it was very clear to each of us, that it is well worth running the experiment of Sacred SoulFire at Hawkwood Farm, this summer.

There are so many synchronicities, they are too many to reflect here, but the 2 biggest are the name similarity of our home in the Southeast (Hawkwind Earth Renewal, Alabama) and the fact that Hawkwood is in HARMONY, MD.

It is our hope that Hawkwood Farm will provide the stability we desire. Yet we know that we have to follow our hearts, with no attachment to the outcome. Whatever happens, we have entered into this communal experiment, by accepting Hawkwood Farm invitation for us to come there. Clearly, Hawkwood Farm is supporting the sacred all night fire circle movement and appears to becoming a sanctuary for surburban and urban folks like me. This land calls out to us to bring our music, motion and mojo to work with the spirits of the place, the nature, community, self, other with a focus of helping to bring more light to the world. It is a place that will welcome you with open hands and encouragement for who you are.

Details on presenters, cost and offerings to come soon, but here is what i know now.
Sacred SoulFire-Maryland
Dates: Thursday July 3rd to Sunday July 6th, (Core Collaborator Days are Weds and Monday)
CONTENT: 5 Elemental Groups (teaching & sharing circles) that will focus on deepening our relationship with self, other, spirit & the Fire Circle Itself. Community Ritual, Community Art Projects, Gratitude Tree, Ceremonial Tattoo work with SMS, All Night Fires & more.
FOOD: We will have an AMAZING Meal Plan headed up by Darriel Park (just ask anyone who was at SSF-WV how the food was)
CHILDREN: Child Centered Programing will be instigated by Tammy (Darriel's wife)
LAND DETAILS: 91 acres to find the perfect spot for camping, woods and open fields, a pond to swim and fish in, a barn to have an inside circle if we get rain, or have a movie night in. Several Fire Circles already developed, an hour from Baltimore, and hour and a half from DC, with plenty of parking.
COST: as low as we can make it.

Hawkwood Farm is home to Erin Aylor, an amazing artist and kind person. He has welcomed us with open arms and an open heart, and all involved feel a resonance of sustainability and growth. With our (Owen and myself) plans to develop a space in Baltimore, and Erin's plans to develop his land for events like SoulFire, it seems that the universe is presenting us with an opportunity to work with the Urban/Rural model of collaboration.

FUTURE NEWS:
Long Term Event Horizons include the possiblity that we will begin Full Moon Drum and Dance events, with the colder months being at our space in Baltimore and the warmer months being at Hawkwood Farm. Time will tell us, and as soon as we have a plan for that phase, we will let you all know.

Here is a link for Erin's myspace page so you can see some images of the farm and his art.
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=334983196

We hope you will join us, especially if you are a local to DC/Baltimore on July 4th weekend.
With that said, we all know it is difficult to schedule without conflicting other fire circle dates. My "polling of peeps" reflected that 99% of us felt that this is a good weekend for Sacred SoulFire, as the content of our work is so different from each of the other events (we know of) being offered on that weekend. We recognize the good work that each crew of folks delivers, Earth Drum Council (AHO) and 4QF (Drum and Splash). We trust the process of the interconnected, diverse Fire Circle community members being able to choose the event that most supports their personal preference of Fire Circle style.

If we do not see each other at SSF-Maryland, may the spirits weave our paths together at some other juicy event, and very soon!
Brightest of Blessings!!!

Peace Matters,
Mz. imani

Warm greetings to the Fire Family out there. I recently moved to Sydney Australia from Santa Cruz California and I am deeply missing the connection of the fire circle. Does anyone know of any local Sydney fire circle groups or events? Or better yet, if you live in the Sydney area please message me, I would love to connect with you.
Darlington, MD

hi friends,

We still have space for another 25 people for the Costa Rica Forestdance.
Who is thinking about coming?
Let me know if you have any questions as well.
I'm adding some info below

be well

Jason

Forestdance Costa Rica-Feb. 19th-23rd, Tropical Sacred Fire Circle

Hi folks. Happy New Year.

Forestdance Costa Rica is happening and we would love to see you
there with us.
It is hard to believe that this will be the 10th Forestdance.

Come join us at the foot of Costa Rica’s largest waterfall, the
Diamante Falls. The Diamante Sanctuary is the land stewarded by our
hosts. They call it H.O.M.E. So who is ready to experience a sacred
fire circle at a place called Heaven On Mother Earth.?
Our facilitators will include Una Gallagher, Rabin Sol, Billy Woods,
Jacob Sirois, and Tenasi Rama from Costa Rica. This gathering will
have a focus on holistic health. The food will be pure and fantastic
and we will hold space for transformation, healing and happiness.
There will be a lot of stretching and various forms of yoga offered
for beginners and adepts alike.

Come and experience a connection with the plants, the water, the sun,
the night, and with a voice within yourself that will be expressive
and powerful. Come and get what you need in late February, so you
can return with the energy and grace that we all need to continue
shaping and lighting up our communities. Drink sacred teas from
plants intentionally harvested from the tropical forest and brewed
right in our circle. Know what it is to feel gratitude to your
core. Learn about shaping your own reality and developing long
lasting change. Reclaim your inspiration.

We can arrange shuttle service to and from the San Jose, CR airport,
or you can take a $3 bus ride and a $12 cab ride. This is mostly a
camping event, and there are beds available in the Casitas for around
20 people. You are also welcome to join us before the gathering and
stay for a couple of days afterwards. The best prices for flights were found through Travel Zoo's suggested site search.

Please check our web site and the Art of Union website as well, and
if you have any questions, I can be reached at
Jason@heARTbeatCollective dot org.

Hope to see you around the fire,

Convocation

Convocation is an awesome Pagan Convention that happens in Michigan. It is a four day convention from Thursday evening to Sunday afternoon. This year it is February 21-24. Registration is $60 which is a bargain; hotel rooms are $89. I've gone to this convention the past three years and had an excellent time. The website is www.convocation.org. The schedule is up so you can see what kind of classes they are offering this year. Friday and Saturday night they hold the biggest drum circle I've ever taken part in (Drumming to Spiritual Ecstasy). There is a Masquerade Ball on Saturday night that everyone dresses up for; they have DJ spinning dance music. Mateyo Empie is an excellent teacher; she does the Pervuian Fire Ceremony and the Cone of Power both of which are very powerful rituals. I've always heard the Gnostic Mass is well done but never had a chance to go. They hold a men's and women's ritual at the same time. I've attended the women's ritual the past two years and have had very moving experiences. They choose a different theme each year by pulling a random card out of a tarot deck. This year's theme is the Temperance card.

I know that some are going to Hawaii; what are others doing?

I'm going to visit grandma in the Massachusets,
returning to see My Fair Lady at the Kennedy Center on 12/29.
(Hey, did you ever notice the cockney accent rendition of Mayfair Lady)

What are you doing to celebrate the season?

Sacred Fire Works!

I'm new to this tribe, but a firecircle junkie for many years...

Please hold space for me, as I launch myself into the second half of my life with a "Coming Out Party".

I'm coming out of being a beleagured and persecuted M.D. I have let go of the idea of conventional medical practice, after over twenty years, "In The Belly Of The Beast"..

I am announcing myself as a Witch (coming out of the broom closet), an intrepid explorer of alternative relationships (coming out of the monogamy closet), bisexual (going beyond my heterosexual comfort zone), and an artist (coming out of the science vs. art schizophrenia of the Dominator Culture).

This all happens next Sunday, 9/30.I will hostess a FIRE CIRCLE designed to allow All My Relations to attend.

For my 80 year old aunt, my 76 year old dad, and my straighter friends, we will call it a "performance piece", and the ritual/ceremony that I lead "audience participation"...

How's that for cultural creativity?

So, New Tribe With Similar Loves, please think of me, from 6 to 8 p.m. next Sunday.

Words of support and encouragement appreciated! This is a BIG piece of work, several years in the making...

Also, is anyone from the DC area planning on going up for it? We're putting together a potential caravan so I'm interested to find out who else in the neighborhood will be making the trip.

To imani and all the hard working organizers and core collaborators who visioned and labored to bring it into being;
To the land and her stewards for being oh so hospitable;

For the local area community pulling together and taking risks; and

To the musicians, ritualists, drummers, dancers, witnesses, and walkers, for doing it all night,

I am sitting here in the afterglow of a radiantly successful event!

major props being sent out from my heart to all of the folks that staffed CoSM Fire! There were moments of amazing grace and beauty, some temporary, some firery, some fluid, some static...all carved deeply into my psyche and sensory memory bank. images i will be depositing and withdrawing for years to come!

we began this merger of "acoustons and electrons" at SSF-NY last year and over the last year i have invested major amounts of time and energy so that i could educate myself about the electronic music scene in NYC (Freek Factory, Sub Swara, CoSM, Grand Space events, etc). my goal has been to be in service to the dance and to discover the similarities and diversities of our scenes that are dedicated to expression, dance and entrainment. I have found that the best DJ's i have come in contact with always read the energy of the dance floor. This is very similar to my experience of the folks in our fire circle scene who read the energy of the circle, before offering some piece of music or poetry or art in action.

we had 150 folks participate at CoSM Fire and i have heard that we met most people's needs of entrainment, entertainment , art and expression. For those folks that did not get their needs met, i hope we can dialogue and learn from your experiences on how to make it better event. i do feel that we have found a sustainable model for CoSM Fire, at CSS, as we were able to make music all night (even tho i had to remind all the drummers "playing with one finger means we get to play all night" over and over)....

The Rhythm Shamans next go to starwood for an all night fire on Thursday and a performance on mainstage Saturday night. we will run the SoulFire Electrique model for our all night fire there, so if you missed CoSM Fire and want to check out the blending model of sacred fire circle work and play, please join us there...

and if you wanna check out the acoustic experience of SoulFire, we are gathering august 9-12 at Abrams Creek Campground, near Elk Garden, WV. ping me off list, or check consciouscollaborations for more info...

would love to hear feedback from any and all who showed up at CoSM Fire, as we are sincerely committed to this work and play and defining avenues of expression that bridge the worlds of the "acoustons and electrons"

peace matters,
Mz.imani

PS: posting some fotos next...
Forestdance Massachusetts and Costa Rica Updates

Forestdance Mass. and Costa Rica Updates

Hi folks,

Registration for Forestdance Costa Rica is officially open. Come and do the sacred at the foot of Costa Rica’s largest waterfall, the Diamante Falls. Our hosts there from the Art of Union came to the very first Forestdance in Georgia during the Harmonic Concordance in 2003. The gathering in Costa Rica will be the 10th Forestdance since that magical week. This gathering will be Feb. 19th-23rd. Registration includes meals, and people are welcome to come a couple of days early and stay late for a small fee for lodging and food.

To check availability and rates for flights I suggest trying Spirit Air. You will need to fly into San Jose, and from there either rent a car, take a $3 bus to Musoc and a $12 cab ride to the town of San Salvador, or book a space on a shuttle van from the airport. The retreat at Diamante Sanctuary is called Heaven on Mother Earth, or H.O.M.E., and it is indeed a lush and immaculate taste of paradise. We will be truly blessed to be together on that sacred land, doing what we love to do.

Forestdance Massachusetts is just around the corner over the week surrounding Labor Day. There will be 8 seed groups to choose from. Read more about what the seed groups are about on the main site. The gathering runs from Aug. 29th- Sept. 4th. Wednesday and Thursday we will be settling in together, with a short fire on Thursday night. We will do all night fires for three night in a row from Friday to Monday morning. Monday and Tuesday will be integration days with connecting, heart sharing, entertainment, and community building exercises. Seed groups will run every day, and will run at different times, so each attendee can be part of more than one. Here are your choices with the name of the hub facilitator:

Vocal Magic: Billy Bardo
Herbalism & the Root Fire: Una Gallagher
Yoga: Lotus
Sustainability: Joel Sindelar & Orion Kriegman
Spoken Work/Speak your World: Travis Bowman
Percussion Around the Fire: Jon Holland and Lisa Bouchie
Body Workers/Healers Group: Missy Wilreker
Sacred Movement and Dance: Shakti Rowan

For descriptions, bios, other class information and tons of additional info, check out www.Forestdance.net.

This year our gathering is being brought to you by the heARTbeatcollective: Healing and Expressive ARTists for Balance, Ecology, Awareness, and Transformation. Find out more about this new group at www.heARTbeatcollective.org.

Looking forward to seeing you around the fire,
Salaries and Fire Slaves

Shakerman Bilhelm brought up another topic that is sometimes challenging to discuss -- money.

I like to believe that there can be many, many different models for how fires can be produced and organized, and how organizers and contributers can be compensated for their gifts of time and talent. I choose to believe that these models can all be ethical in their various expressions. None may be immune to abuse since any model will be populated and run by fallible humans. None of the models are inherently unethical, even a nontransparent model where the financials are not open to the public.

This are my thoughts, now what are yours?

I would love to open this new thread to hold space for listening and dialogue (er, poly-logue?) on this subject. I request that we maintain reasonably safe space, and that we discuss models and concepts, and not individuals. It should not be necessary to name names or specific events/organizations in this discussion, unless you want to name yourself or your organization. As long as we speak only for ourselves I think we'll be in excellent shape!
Examples can be genericized.

So there are free fires. This model can be sustained either by some other source of income that an organization has (such as other sustaining events during the year). They can be achieved through the complete donation of space, materials, and talent. Or they can be achieved through the use of free public lands such as a national parks combined with collaborative donation of time and materials, although the legality of such gatherings in park land (if done without requisite permits) could be problematic.

There are non-profit organization fires. These could be free fires if there are other sustaining revenues, or they could be of comparable registration donation to any other fire.

There are glossy and high-production-value fires, with nice cabins and yummy food showing up, hot showers and cabins, blockbuster workshops with faciliators flying in from the four quarters of the earth.

There are people who have prosperous careers which leave them enough time on the side to donate their time and talent (and frequent flyer miles) to offer themselves to organize and facilitate at fires.

There are people who make it work by running fires as a small supplemental income or taking in just enough stipends or honoraria to cover their costs of being there and participating as a collaborator.

There is also an option that someone could run fires like a sole proprietor, with the fires being their sole or primary income. They might still donate the rest of their free time to promoting and juicing up others' events. Their fire events might not cost any different from the admission fees of gatherings from the other models, and the energy of the gathering could fall anywhere along the spectrum, from no frills to glamour glitz.

Here's a hypothetical discussion. If Sarah Spark makes a prosperous living as a business person, but she really wants to bring really great fire events into the world, would it be okay for her to quit her job and run fire events for a living?

Would it be ok if she drew for herself a sustainable salary from those activities to maintain her former income level?

What if Sarah Spark only makes $30k a year making fires, when she could be making double that as a business person. Wow, someone is basically donating net $30k a year to our community fires. I think that's cool.

But what if Sarah Spark is a shrewd business woman, she's organized and knows how to stretch her pennies and negotiate with camp owners, and eventually she finds she can actually pull in an income equal to, or greater than, her potential corporate world salary?

Well, obviously the fires are still comparatively affordable -- that is, they are successful events that people like and are able to register for. Is there anything wrong about that? The community still benefits as there is a really cool fire event to participate in, and it wouldn't be there if Sarah was a full time stockbroker or lawyer.

What do you think?

Would it change your opinion if she drove a BMW?
Or if she has the most well-funded scholarship program around?

I encourage thoughts from anyone who has been to an all-night fire gathering before.

Spam spam spam and thoughts on how to promote your fire!!

Just a friendly notice from your moderator -- please consider carefully before reposting an event in the listings for this tribe. Limitless conversation about the various all night fire events is welcome (and encouraged!) . . . AND . . . I'd like to try to keep the events page view really clean and eliminate duplication.

If I see the same event reposted in this tribe, I will just delete older versions of your listing, ok? If you've already put the event on the board, I'd recommend you post topics and tell us what's going on. Give us some good news!

Some of the things that make me excited about going to an event (enough to register!) are:

* hearing about some of my friends who are planning to be there

* reading about some workshops or teachers who will be sharing their arts and wisdom

* knowing that there are work weekends and craft weekends happening, building up to an event (even if I can't attend the work weekend or craft day, I know the energy is building!) This can be as simple as hearing about Trish making some new costume for the fire in Hawaii, or Joss talking about getting her rattle muscles in shape for SpiritFire!

* finding out more about your plans for the fires and the intentions and ritual frame that will support them. How many all night fires? What will I smell, hear, and see? what kind of music can I look forward to? Spinner always offers such a wonderful sensory tour of anticipation, using the craft of words to presage the event. I can feel like I am there already at MayFire or BoneDance.

* knowing more about the site, especially if I am not familiar with it. What are the land keepers like? What kind of nature and landscape and flora and fauna are there? What is the fire circle site like? What kind of food is cooking?

So . . . I look forward to learning more about each of the fires this season has to offer us!

I will also try to cut the spam when I see it. Postings related to all night fire events or the related arts (movement, meditation, percussion, vocal music, various spiritual practices) are all welcome. Flat out commercial postings (buy my stuff) may be removed if it seems really spammy. If you see something you would like me to delete, just let me know and I'll check it out.

Love, and lots of hot burning sparky fire,

Liz

Competition?

Are we [whoever WE are, anyway] committed to a movement and a culture, to promote the vitality and sustainability of the fire, and the broader firecircle community?

Or are we interested in tending our own garden, and promoting our own event?

[I don't think there's a wrong answer to this, by the way, the answer could be 'yes to both' and I hope people who care feel really safe to weigh in candidly on this discussion, especially fire organizers. Anyone putting on an event and taking the emotional and financial risk deserves SERIOUS support and props.]

Are other fires to be seen as competition?
[those are My Dates or that event is in My Region, that's My Site!]

Or happy proliferation (thank heaven I have more fires to go to, and the people in my region are finally Getting It!)?

Is there a scarcity of attendees? Or an abundance?

How does our garden grow? Through more fires, or less? Or only with more fires spaced appropriately apart?

If there is competition (I have to decide between this or that event and can't do both between the time off work and the money invested), is that competition a healthy force that stimulates growth/evolution and reduces waste?

Does it force a higher quality of planning, support, infrastructure, cost control, site selection, and programming/ritual? Or does it put unhealthy pressure on fledgling artists just trying to eke out a gathering? Or both?

Or should we regulate or self-regulate the incidences of fire to hold the "market" steady, like a cartel, and set intentions on 'who gets' a certain territory at a certain season?

Should this somehow be a limited franchise with planned growth? I know it sounds funny, but I've heard some people speak with language that sounds a lot like this -- just not using the business lingo.

How are those 'franchise rights' determined -- grandfathered in (ie, we've been here for 10 years, respect the foundations we have laid and worked for) or by the Vote of the attendees (we want the new gathering's energy, or we want both gatherings and we'll support both)?

I am sketching this out like a B&W issue and it's not, so just a disclaimer that this may sound a little harsh. I am hoping to spark conversation and 'safe' postings rarely do that!

In reality the organizers cross pollinate and lend their love and energy to other fires, and many of the newer fires have been the fruits of fires that came before.

AND we keep bumping into this, and we hear tales . . .

So what does 'competition' mean, anyway?

Last fall in my region [and I won't name names ] there were three fall events of a similar nature and in the same 2 week window, all intending fires. I think the people running them were aligned enough in intention and platform where it could have been one, larger event with several all night fires. Or two events. For various and sundry reasons, political and personal, they were however separate events. Each about 1-2 hours from DC in different cardinal directions.

From what I understand, one of the gatherings had to fold , and quietly faded away after it became clear that only a handful of people were registered and they were really just the organizers and people lined up to present workshops. Another gathering had very low attendance, lower than expected even for an intimate gathering, and had some difficulty meeting costs -- luckily they had other revenue streams so I don't think there was any serious damage. The fires were sweet, we heard, but there was stress on the part of those taking the risks. As for the third gathering, I don't think I heard how it went or whether they had all night fires in the end . . . I think I heard attendance was low but don't quote me.

What happened there, and what can we learn about competition from it?
If the "attendee pool" of a certain region has only 100 candidates, is it wrong to try to split that pool into three buckets?

Or is this scarcity thinking?

Should not we believe that the DC area has thousands of people who would love the fire and take to it readily?

From what intention should a separate firecircle gathering arise?

When is it better to support an existing event rather than making a new one? What circumstances make it totally appropriate to create a different event?

And will the People vote in the end -- with their registrations and volunteer juice -- to indicate whether those decisions were best?

If a firecircle gathering falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it fall, what does it mean?

Summer of Fire -- What's your schedule?

FINALLY -- Scott and I got our summer schedule worked out.

Most of you already know we had a really fantastic Fires Rising at Four Quarters Farm:
www.4qf.org. This was a really wonderful event, the fires were a great balance of intensity and gentleness from where I walked.

SpiritFire, alas, is out for us. Their schedule is specific: you can only arrive Wednesday, which means taking 3-4 days off work in our case once we factor in the travel time. Scott will be at the Polygon that week so he can't get the vacation, and I'm already negative on both vacation time and sick time. SpiritFire does allow some Friday arrivals by special permission, but you have to pay extra and as far as I can tell from looking at the schedule, there is only one all night fire left at that point. (Please enlighten if you're in the know on this matter). So with flights and registration, we were faced with $1500 -- not the most responsible choice when we've got credit cards debt to pay from all this moving we've done in the last two years. I REALLY hope to attend SpiritFire some day soon, but each year so far, no matter how strongly I set the intention, I can't get the stars to align for me. The universe must have other plans!

So we reoriented the schedule:

Weekend after July 4th (July 6-8) we will be doing an all night fire at the Chesapeake Pagan Gathering in Darlington, MD, in collaboration with mz imani and friends. This group is new to our style of sacred all night fire, from what I can tell. Should be interesting and fun. The website says "facilitated bonfire drumming." Ha ha. Right.

Next up, Sacred Soul Fire in WV August 9-12.
www.consciouscollaborations.com/SSF
I look forward to seeing many beloveds at this fire. If anyone wants to come out to the east coast for this, we have house space and car space for you -- come join us! The gathering itself is very affordable, close to DC, and the site looks beautiful. Bravo!

September 8th is the first Soul Fire Inside of the new fall season in DC.

After that is the International Alchemy Conference in Las Vegas, October 5-7. Jeff and Spinner will be hosting an all night fire indoors at this conference, and I'm excited to join them at that event. My flight was under $300 from DC, and I needed a pretty specific itinerary. So check it out -- Vegas may be closer than you realize if you're on the east coast.

and finally:

*tentative*
Scott and I hope to attend Fall Fest and BoneDance in Vegas October. I've attended many years in a row for this event and hope to be there once again! Missing MayFire was tough after having it a part of my spring for so many years. Fall Fest includes a Masquerade Ball and an all night fire out at the Sekhmet Goddess Temple in the Nevada desert.

Where will you be this summer? Will I see you around the fire?

a bit of SHAMELESS self-promotion

Well...I did it. I added a Paypal shopping cart to my long neglected drum and shekere website. With some changes happening in my life it has become necessary for me to get back to it and pay attention to promoting my craft. What an interesting and lovely turn! The website itself is just ... well, gaudy is one word that comes to mind - the next is functional. A gaudy, but functional website. It needs a good revamp but I don't have the time to change the look and feel of it right now. So here is the url.... browse about, enjoy, pass the url to someone else - and I hope it doesn't sting your eyes too much to look at it ;-)
