Temple of the Sacred Mother
Vision of Manifestation

Vision
The vision for the Temple of the Sacred Mother came from a shamanic journey to the Spirit of the Earth asking how her spirit could be honored through the creation of an Intentional Sacred Space.

Intention
The Temple is the embodiment of the Spirit of the Earth’s vision for a new world, where divinity is re-envisioned as flowing through each of us, through all life on the planet, and through to the Earth and Universe as a Sacred Whole; where we consciously co-create the world we wish to share with our brothers and sisters in humanity and all the creatures, plants, and spirits of the earth, through the visioning and manifestation of a world in harmony and balance.

The Structure
The structure of this sacred space is envisioned as an Ancient Old Growth Tree embodying the Tree of Life that links us with the rest of the Universe. The Tree carries the spirit of the Pacific Northwest with us as a gift to the Playa. From outside the Temple, the Tree helps us remember our connection with nature, seeing it as sacred space unto itself even as we are sheltered by human-made structures. From within the Temple, we are embraced in a womb of branches, encircling us to create an inner enclosed sanctuary where participants can reconnect with the Earth on a spiritual level and find a peaceful place to reintegrate their experiences of the Green Man Burn.

Around the inside of the Temple, visionary art and altars will encircle participants, representing the cycles that flow through our lives and nature. Elemental and directional altars will connect us with the East/Air, South/Fire, West/Water, and North/Earth, with each altar reflecting aspects of our human experience, possibly including such themes as Intuition, Transformation, Emotion, and Nourishment. The design of each altar is intended to be highly interactive, so that participants can add their own words, poems, art, music, dance, tokens, and expressions as they are moved to share them. In this way, the altars will create a living journal of human and spiritual inspirations connecting people across the land as the message of the Temple travels the country and the world.

Nature photography and video will give devotees a means of connecting with the Earth through visual Meditation, while the music, chant, druming, and the natural symphony of the Earth will reconnect us on an auditory level. Additionally, a ground mandala and to-scale representation of a timeline of the Earth will offer other means of finding connection and perspective. Representations of the celestial cycles will encircle the upper portions of the inner branches, reframing our visions of time in the unfolding of the seasons and the transitions of the moon. And in keeping with the theme of reconnecting with our place in the Universe, a solar-powered starscape will illuminate the temple by night, and shine through a model of our solar system.

In the center of the Tree, a fabric trunk will descend down to a plaster or paper mache base that flows into roots on the ground. When lowered the trunk will form a full tree. However, a rope pulley system will allow the fabric portion of the trunk to be lifted up through the inside of itself as a Venetian blind, creating an open visual space in the center of the Temple for rituals, Tree dances, and Spiral dances. When lifted, the trunk will reveal it’s base to contain a manifestation cauldron, a vessel into which people can add their visions of the New World we wish to create in community together, flowing from our collective consciousness into our future reality; a Collective Vision spiraling into the Earth and up through the Heavens as it nourishes the growth of the Tree of Life. In this way, the Tree of Life creates an unbroken lineage through time, connecting us with the future we wish to create for our Descendants through the oldest traditions of our Ancestors.

Growing the Tree of Life
The branches of the tree will be formed from ropes draped in strips of reclaimed green fabric cascading from a central trunk, which hangs from a single ceiling anchor point. In the months leading up to Burning Man, these fabric strips will be taken to festivals, events, and locations all over the West and beyond, where individuals can add their Visions, Prayers, and Promises for the Earth and the New World they wish to bring to Birth. As the message of the Temple travels the country and the World, the Seedling of the Tree will grow alongside an ever-expanding Collective Consciousness of a New World. Through community vision and love, the Spirit of the Earth will be Honored by thousands of people coming together to create a giant Visionary Prayer Flag for the Earth.

The Tree will be made up of seven layers of branches, representing the expanding Chakras from root to crown, with an emphasis on the green of the Heart Chakra as the Tree is born through Love and the expansion of Community. In this way, the Tree is the Being, just as the alignment and balance of the Divine Individual is the vital step in returning health and balance to the Earth as a Sacred Whole. Additionally, the colors of the chakras, represented with glowing orbs or colored “fairy tinsel” moss, will honor the Spirit of the Rainbow Tribe; the people of All Races who are prophecied to come together to bring the Vision of a New World into Being – a Vision which the Tree itself Embodies.

Throughout the weeklong celebration of Burningman, the Temple will house ceremonies, performances, and workshops taking us on a Journey through the Chakras. From Monday, where we will honor and bless the Earth and the Playa which support the very root of our survival, through Sunday when our final ceremony culminates in honoring our highest Connection with the Divine, each day will be devoted to a single Chakra, as its Teachings are Remembered and its Energies are brought back into Harmony and Alignment.

Creating a Mental Framework
The name of the Temple of the Sacred Mother is envisioned as a means of rekindling the soul’s vision of the Earth as Gaia – the dynamic embodiment of sacred life, a living Spirit that gives us birth while enfolding us within her. The hope is to help us remember that divinity is not simply above and beyond us, but deeply inherent within each of us and all that surrounds us, as we spring from a living whole. Thus we are given a framework in which to ask ourselves such questions as, “What is our relationship with the Earth?,” “How do we honor (or dishonor) our Mother and our family of siblings in the elemental, plant, animal, and human world?” and “How can we reconnect with the highest vision of our own Spirits to bring our thoughts and actions back into alignment, returning healing and harmony to the Sacred Whole?”

In keeping with this last question, the Temple will invite participants to enter “Portals to the Goddess and God,” encircling the Tree. These passageways will carry us through a series of curtains, greeting us with questions and images leading to a final portal, where we are prepared to commune directly with the Divine. As we open the last curtain we discover our own image reflecting back at us. And here we are given a devotional space to remember, worship, confess, and honor the Goddess/God within each of Us. As participants exit the final portal, they will reenter the Temple, finding their place within the Whole of Divinity.

Design Logistics
The entire design of the Tree is intended to be as space-efficient, resource-efficient, and cost-efficient as possible. Once completed, the structure should be entirely collapsible like an umbrella, allowing it to be easily assembled, disassembled, and transported. As the branches extend outward, they will be tied off to a series of anchor ropes weighted down around the radius of the tree. This design will give the branches stability, while allowing them to interact and dance with the wind, giving the Tree natural movement and life. Additionally, by using weighted anchors rather than ground anchors, the Temple can be assembled anywhere it can be hung, allowing it to rest on pavement or indoor flooring while minimizing its impact on the Earth.

Manifestation
The Temple of the Sacred Mother represents a Vision that, at its very root, is intended to be born through Community and Collaboration. Visionary Web-Spinners are needed to manifest each aspect of the Temple, with the possibilities and beauty of the project growing with the contributions and inspirations of the people who feel called to help the Tree grow. Each artistic aspect of the project will need people to manifest it, adding art, multimedia, ceremony, and intention. There is plentiful room for inspiration. In addition, the Temple needs web-spinners to carry branches of the Temple to events, gatherings, and likeminded groups to collect vision strips to build the Tree. Finally, the Temple cannot grow without the funds needed to make it all happen! As it currently stands, the estimated budget for the Temple is $2000, with various elements being more or less costly depending on the ability to resource materials within the community. A list of needed items will soon be posted to the Temple of the Sacred Mother Tribe (tribes.tribe.net/sacredmother) along with directions for sending donations. Anyone with a knack or network for fundraising would be especially appreciated at this time! All those interested in getting involved with the Temple in any way can get plugged in by contacting Violet via Tribe.net.
