Hello all - I was hoping to get a recommended reading list from anyone who cares to share. What has resonated with you recently? In the past? What are you reading now? What about it do you love? Dislike?

I just finished 'American Gods' by Neil Gaiman. It is a fictional book, but a really great story... made me want to put a saucer of cream out for the piskies, and shout out that I believe in all the gods/goddesses, whatever their form, so as not to lose them. If anyone else has read this book, what did you think?

Blessings and Namaste

    • Truth Seeker -

I just finished reading 'Living in the Light' and it was really great. I'm still digesting, and I think it's something that I'll go back to often to work with the meditations and exercises in it; all in all, a very practical guide, and many good insights for me. Thank you so much!! I will definitely check out 'A Woman's Worth' soon, I think.

      Thanks again...

I read it and it was a hoot. Such a creative take on gods and goddesses. And a nail biter to the end, I didn't know what was going to be done with the sledgehammer...

    Lately, fiction:

Olympos, by Dan Simmons. A sequel to Ilium. It is an alternative take on gods and goddesses in a sci-fi and fantasy setting. It is set on earth and mars but during different time periods. A lot of the action takes place in Troy, and is a riff on Homer's Illiad and Odyssey. It really makes you think that since we are all gods and goddess in truth, how would we act if given incredible powers? Dan Simmons is a must read if you like sci-fi. His Hyperion series is awesome.

    Non-fiction:

Diamond in Your Pocket, by Gangaji. She is a teacher/sage in the advaita vendanta tradition. The book is wonderful and calls for us to end the search and realize what we truly are NOW.

Facing Love Addiction, by Pia Meloddy. I have read this three times. She really nails one of the biggest problems people have in relationships and addictive behaviors.

  • Rita Mae Brown's Venus Envy. She's a popular novelist, but once in a while writers like that really get the soul of a goddess, in this case Venus. That one gets overlooked, you think she's just a sexpot. Well, she's a divine force, the force of the happy alignment of more or less opposing forces, alignment which can also dislodge the brakes to better self-knowledge and examination and evolution of the soul. Venus is every bit the divine force Mars is, whose job it is to make sure those whose natures really do collide acknowledge this and duke it out even though they don't want to be impolite.

The sex scenes don't hurt, either.
  • At the moment, I'm engrossed in two books, one is fiction and the other is not.

I'm enjoying Francesca De Grandis' "Goddess Initiation". It isn't really my path, but I feel that all knowledge helps me to become more of myself, and this is a nicely-written book. The subtitle is "A Practical Celtic Program for Soul-Healing, Self-Fulfillment & Wild Wisdom". Wisdom I'm always up for. She's a shamanic guide, and this is quite good.

The other book, the fiction one, is a rarity for me, as I usually stay quite clear of fiction. But this is by Morgan Llywelyn and Michael Scott, titled "Etruscans". I'm trying to research whatever I can about my own ancestry, which isn't Etruscan but Sabine. However, there isn't anything I've found in print about the Sabines, so I'm playing with this. I've emailed the author (Llywelyn) to ask about her depth of research, but to no avail. I'm just a hopeless non-fiction reader, I suppose.

  • Recommended Books List
This is a list of books that I believe to be very valuable in content. These are books that I use almost everyday as references, resources, words of enlightenment and knowledge. They never get old or outdated. I list them here for you because I know how hard it is too find good books these days from reputable authors who know what they are talking about. I have always believed that If you want to know the truth, you need to go as far back to the source as possible. That is why each of these books and authors listed here, I have screened to see that solid research, sound intuition, archeological/historical accuracy, and balanced understanding has gone into them. It seems anyone can write a book based on their opinion but it is best to balance that opinion with wisdom and research so as not to lead seekers astray. That is why I feel very good recommending the following to you. I run a Priest/ess training in California and these are books I recommend to those who train with me. I hope it helps.

    NATIVE AMERICAN RESOURCES

*Animal-Speak by Ted Andrew The spiritual and magical powers of creatures great and small. (I highly recommend you each get a copy it will serve you well, always)

Voices of our Ancestors by Dhyani Ywahoo Cherokee teachings from the wisdom fire.
( a lovely, moving book on the Cherokee spirit path and crystal knowledge)

***The Cherokee Herbal by J.T. Garrett Native Plant Medicine from the four Directions.
(a wonderful resource for herbal healing both magical and Medicinal)

Sacred Earth by Arthur Versluis The spiritual Landscape of Native America
(A quick read and very well expressed, I find it very helpful in comparative studies of the indigenous tribes)

California Indian Shamanism edited by Lowell John Bean, a Ballena Press Publication.
(I highly recommend this wonderful and educational book for all of you when it comes to getting to know the sacred of California. I was very pleasantly surprised to find this book after putting together the course I teach. It confirmed and strengthened my intuitions and beliefs about this land and the wheel of the year. I think you would find it amazing too. )

    AVALONIAN/BRITISH/CELTIC RESOURCES:

    The Encyclopedia of Celtic Wisdom
The Arthurian Tarot/and The Arthurian Tarot course (Best for learning Tarot on and Arthurian legend as it pertains to the four directions. However it places the elements in different direction from the Kalifornia wheel of Place, it is still Really great.)

***Ladies of the Lake (Goddess archetypes in Arthurian legend, a rather advanced read I suggest reading it AFTER becoming familiar with some of the Arthurian archetypes and legends.).)
All the above are by John and Caitlin Mathews

Legend, The arthurian Tarot and A Keeper of words accompany book by Anna-Marie Ferguson
(really great for learning about the different tales in Arthurian legend and its individual characters)

Faery Wicca books one and two by Kisma Stepanich ( The definitive work in my opinion concerning Ireland and its spiritual relationship with the Faery folk regarding the folk magick, traditions and faery-shamanistic practices.)

Spinning the wheel of Anna by Kathy Jones and also
The ancient British Goddess. (Kathy is the lady who trained me and all the other Priests and Priestesses of Avalon and these two books are a valuable treasure trove of wisdom and truth of that training and the land of Bridget's Isles)

The Druid Animal Oracle (cards and book)by Philip and Stephanie Carr-Gomm "working with the sacred animals of the Druid Tradition." (great for totems and their relationship to the Goddesses and Gods of the Druidic/celtoi-Britain pantheon.)

    OTHER RESOURCES ON THE GODDESS

The Goddess Oracle (goddess cards and accompany book) by Amy Sophia Marashinsky and Hrana Janto (great for getting to know the Goddess archetypes around the world in all traditions, very beautiful. I use mine everyday, even on my altar, interchanging them to match what energy I am working with.)

The Hebrew Goddess by Raphael Patai (Also a great book for those who want to know more about the Goddess as she originated in Mesopotamia, Babylon and the lands that Judaism sprang from. )
