Belly Dance in Buffalo, NY: 2 Workshops and a Gala Show in September!!

Hey everybody!
The Buffalo Middle Eastern Dance Festival & Gala is taking place on September 26th 2009!

The festival includes two workshops: "Rhythm in our Dance" and "Balancing Basics and Flow." These workshops are taught by the awesome Sabra and Devra of Rochester, NY! The workshops also include LIVE MUSIC by Layali El Sharq Band, a very unique opportunity!

The Gala show is the same day, 7PM-Midnight and includes an awesome belly dance show to live music, and open dancing after the show!

Pgh Bellies Weather!

I've heard from our Pittsburgh Bellies and it looks like everyone is still going to give it a go!

Some out of towners are coming in to the hotel tonight to have the trip done and over with as there seems to be a break in the weather here now! The hotel has rooms available tonight and can put you under the Pittsburgh Bellies room rate if you want to come in early...

So, we're still on, but please travel safe, and know that Erie understands if you can't make it! We sure will miss you though and will plan another event for like, summer!

Bodacious Belly Dance Moves, Combos and Unique Layers for Tribal Fusion Belly Dance
Join us to spice up your solos or troupe numbers with these most excellent moves and combinations. Narah's original ideas will keep you moving through improvisation, add dynamics to any choreography and bring out the best in Improvisational Choreography.
Also... Keep your Belly Dance prowess fresh with these unique layers. It is doubtful that you have seen them in other workshops... (you'll have to come to find out ;) ). We will break them down so you can drill properly. You'll have great party tricks after this workshop! Be sure to practice those foundational movements beforehand! You can use the Narah and Jala Tribal Fusion Belly Dance Technical Foundation Instructional DVD, available in the market place. Beginners welcome, but it is going to be an advanced paced workshop, so enjoy the challenge!

Workshop with Kari:
Flamenco Elements for Belly Dancers
In this workshop, Kari of Sadiqa will touch on the core elements for lovely Flamenco arms and hands with a little bit of movement to spice up your Belly Dance style. She will finish off the workshop with a short choreography to help the dancer understand how to apply the technique properly. This workshop is suitable for all levels. This workshop will start off with a brief warm up. Yoga mats are encouraged, but not required.

Moria Chappell in St. Albans, WV October 11

Join Jenna Brooke Smith Saturday, October 11 as she brings Moria Chappell to St. Albans, WV for a workshop and show!

Moria will be teaching her intense Tribal Belly Dance Boot Camp in which students will learn the drills and exercises for intense muscular isolation, 4 different shaped shimmies, and conditioning to develop the glutes for crisp hip work. Hip, head, belly, chest and shoulder isolations will be drilled as well as fluid transition from move to move and traveling with isolation. Fundamental spinning technique will also be covered such as spot turns, paddle turns and cross-step turns. Combos, posture, fluid arms and creative poses will be highlighted as the days' workshop culminates in a tribal fusion choreography. Students will learn the tribal technique of stretching, toning, and drilling to gain muscular technique that places the dancer in control of their body as well as variations on classic tribal combinations. Also, students will learn costuming secrets for the stage! All levels are encouraged to attend! 

Workshop Location: Ayash Sports Complex, 2400 Kanawha Terrace, St. Albans, WV 25177
Time: Registration 9:00-10:00, Workshop begins 10:00 am - 12:00 pm, 1 hour break for lunch, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Cost: Early Bird Special - $75 (includes price of show) by September 8, $80 (includes price of show) Sept. 9 - Oct. 10, $85 at the door.

Saturday night there will be a show! For those of you interested in performing, let me know (dancers must attend workshop in order to perform).

After hours of preparation in classes, practice in front of the mirror, and rehearsal, how are you presenting yourself as a professional performer? This workshop offers the tools both practical and theoretical to break into or enhance your professional appearance. It will provide insight into job seeking, costuming, make-up tips, promotional packages, as well as explore the illusive notions of stage presence, charisma, "handling" the audience and much more. This workshop is tailored to the participants present. Bring any promotional material you have on yourself, dance photos, your make-up, a costume you are working on, and dress in comfortable clothing.

Don't forget......Sterling Painton will start off the April 12th event with Yoga Stretches for Belly Dancers from 8:30 to 9:30. Also, we will have an on-site buffet lunch for $5. Taxeem (April 12, 2008 - 9:45 to 11:45am):
An articulate workshop designed to enhance the poise and fluidity of the taxeem, with an emphasis on arms and hands, introducing dancers to movement vocabulary beyond the “Tribal Frame” as well as polishing transitions. We will address such issues as timing, musical and personal interpretation, illusions of the boneless dancer, and sensual vs sexual.

Hot and Spicy (April 12, 2008 - 1:00 to 3:00pm):
An exhilarating and inspirational workshop, designed to be accessible to all levels, with a playful array of drills, combos and hot new moves. Through a series of technical drills and improvised combos students will engage in such topics as dynamic phrasing, musicality, personal expression and the art of creating your own combos.

The Art of Professional Performance (April 13, 2008 - 12:00 to 2:00pm):
This innovative workshop is open to dancers of all levels and backgrounds. After hours of preparation in classes, practice in front of the mirror, and rehearsal, how are you presenting yourself as a professional performer? This workshop offers the tools both practical and theoretical to break into or enhance your professional appearance. It will provide insight into job seeking, costuming, make-up tips, promotional packages, as well as explore the illusive notions of stage presence, charisma, "handling" the audience and much more. This workshop is tailored to the participants present. Bring any promotional material you have on yourself, dance photos, your make-up, a costume you are working on, and dress in comfortable clothing.

Don't forget......Sterling Painton will start off the April 12th event with Yoga Stretches for Belly Dancers from 8:30 to 9:30. Also, we will have an on-site buffet lunch for $5. And lastly......Mira Betz and Sadiqa (formerly PurpleMatilda) will perform at Zafira Dance Company's Speakeasy Cabaret Evening Show on April 12th. For more info and tickets: www.zafiradance.com

About Mira Betz:
The multi-faceted career of Mira Betz is a testament to her passionate artistry and desire to for continual growth. Mira began her training in Middle Eastern dance as a young teen studying primarily with Katarina Burda for over 10 years, where she developed a solid foundation of contemporary, traditional, as well as ritualistic dance forms. In 1996 she studied with Jamila Salimpour and Suhaila Salimpour. In 1998 Mira went abroad to live and study in Morocco. Active in theater, dance and the performing arts for 25 years, Mira Betz has become a sought after dancer, choreographer, costumer, and teacher—confirmed by her nomination of "Instructor of the Year" by Zaghareet Magazine 2006. Mira Betz received her B.F.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts. Her dance background includes training in Salsa, Modern, Jazz, and Flamenco.
