Hi!
I'm thinking about studying with Saida's school in Argentina. Has anyone been there? What was your experience and where did you stay? I'd appreciate some tips on designing my trip. It will be in 2009 after I get back from India.

Hey, I got her instructional dvd II yesterday, straight from Musimundo (a friend brought it from Buenos Aires)! What a beautiful choreo! It looks difficult though. Who of you is in it? Any of you learnt it? What was the experience.

Of course one has to accept that it will look quite different. Saida's way of moving is quite unique and I could never match her ballet-skills or super elongated arms and neck. I was a little amused about her costume, it looked like her coming out of the shower in a towel! But pretty as she is she can wear it, too.

Saida the role model

Hi folks. I feel like a little controversy. Saida has had an impact - globally, most notably on América Latina, though. Saida inspiration or sheer copyism? I think she is a really exciting dancer but when I see the odd videoclip of another girl having gone Saida-ic I have the same reaction as seeing the odd Rachel-Brice-replicant. I love to think that Orit Maftsir has been inspired not only by Dina but also by Saida and has taken and interpreted the music of Mario Kirlis - but she remains recognizable of herself. I also like to watch Shanan as a Saida student that has emancipated from mummy. You see that the temperamental thing isn't a sole property of Saida when you watch Maiada. Hey, I have learnt Saida's little baladi choreo and I think it is fine, the abruptness of a lot of moves is fabulous there and it feels fine to me because I did flamenco and I like the changes between hard and soft also in modern bellydance. But when I see many clips of girls that seem to have gone so Saida-like I start thinking: why? Because the wilful play of Saida with her rough head flips or her delicate hands is her personal choice as a dancer. When imitated it becomes a dead thing, a formalism.
Now, I also heard that Saida really shapes her students down to every detail...

I'm proud to announce that breathtaking SAIDA & Orchestre MARIO KIRLIS from Buenos Aires / Argentina will come to Germany for the first time!

Shows & workshops will be January 17/18th 2009 in Offenbach/Frankfurt, and of couse there will be more excellent dancers like Sefirah from Hungary, Schachlo, Apsara Habibi, Said el Amir and many more.

I am always thinking that I wish that Mario Kirlis would play accordeon instead of keyboard because of the sound...I love his music but often the keyboard sounds so synthie-like...He should have the same possibilities with the accordeon!

Ok this is Saida's tribe but as Mario Kirlis always works with her he may be a topic, too. On the first dvd I though Mario Kirlis was sooo funny and old-fashioned the way he explained the rhythms in front of his blackboard, but I appreciate his music more and more, above all the New Balady. I have some music of his in my ear but I can't remember from which clip it was so: which are your favourite Kirlis-songs (or classics interpreted by his orchestra) - post a youtube link so I can listen to it, please!

News from the younger generation of Saida fans. Liva again, soon to be 4 years old: I had to stick on the Monte Carlo Solos for her. Amar Gamal with veil and silver shoes - yes please. Then the "princess in the blue dress" - we are afraid of the Isis wings and the strange sounding music. Of Rachel Brice with her bizarre make-up we are afraid anyway. And Sonya we don't want neither. When Saida is on: yes, ok mummy you go in the kitchen and make dinner and I watch the princess dancing (that is this not wanting to share, what a kind daughter I have) - as soon as I am there, Saida must have finished her floorwork there and gotten up, Liva comes to make a reclamation : no, I want another one. SHE HAS ONLY PANTS!

(that is: dresses are required, pants are only half as good. I tried to tell her that Saida has pants + half a skirt, but that didn't convince her)

I hope I am not boring you with these silly little stories, they just make me laugh so much.

I finally got the DVD with Saida and Mario (the first one) and I'm very happy about it. The first dvd is well explained, but I don't like the dance coreography in the 2nd one (with veil)
I have learned alot of new moves as well, and together with the ones of the Jillina dvd's, Sadie drum solo, Sonia drum solo and the instructional bellydance dvd with Saida, sonia, amar and bozenka I see that my bellydance skills are better. I also learn a lot more from those dvd's then from my bellydance classes her in Belgium...

I was also wondering if Saida does other 'sports' than bellydance, and if bellydance is her main profession?
What did she use to do as a job?

This is just for fun. My daughter, 3 years old, demanded imperiously to watch bellydance yesterday. I said: what about Vceli Medvici, a czech childrens programme. No, she wanted dancing. So while I made dinner I had her watching the BDSS-Solos from Monte Carlo dvd. She is a bit scared by the Tribal-Fusion girls (before she liked RB and tried to imitate her laybacks, but her taste has changed) and by Adoré because that one makes passionate-pain-mimikry, it looks as if she was angry. But all the classical raks sharqi, hey ho! When I came in she said: that one is good - it was the new baladi by Saida. She added: she is peautiful!
I wanted to have a look then she cried: no you may not look! Only me!

Figure the cheek of her! She thought she saw something nice and didn't want to share. She wanted Saida all to herself!

Rhythms on Saida's DVD

I never heard about the rhythms sherk and tawil Saida and Mario Kirlis are explaining on the DVD. Neither conga masri but I guess that is some blend with afro-latin-american music.
I have a rhythms-cd and another DVD where rhythms are explained and a website with rhythms - but sherk and tawil are mentioned nowhere. Do they have another name for it?
I understood that wada saghier is the same as maqsum. So there is also wada kebir and wada nus that I never "met" yet. Any knowledgeable danceresses around?

I love the Solos of Monte-Carlo performances. Right now I'm watching the saidi with cane more. I love the variety of the way she handle's the cane, the many ideas, the dress, her lively face. before I mainly watched the new baladi.

Domina y perfecciona el arte de tocar los cròtalos ( saggat, chinchines ) con el comprensivo DVD instructivo del renombrado percusionista y profesor de ritmo Tobias Roberson.
En la primera sección, Tobias te muestra paso por paso la técnica básica para las distintas posibilidades de sacarle distintos sonidos a tus crotalos. Una variedad de ritmos y secuencias son introducidas y desglosadas para entregarte un material extensivo con el cual puedes luego crear tu propio repertorio., desde las mas simples hasta las secuencias rítmicas mas complejas.
En la segunda sección, Tobias te enseña dos dinámicas composiciones para tu crotalos. La primera composición es un dúo interactivo entre la darbuka ( derbake ) y los crótalos. Esta composición muestra como practicar y crear una pieza musical con el material enseñado anteriormente en la primera sección. Rachel Brice y Mardi Love muestran una coreografía juntas que acompaña la composición, que puede ser usada o puede inspirar tu propia creatividad.
En la segunda composición se enseñan posibilidades mas avanzadas con técnica mas rápida y sincopada. En esta composición, Rachel y Mardi danzan separadas para mostrarte distintas posibilidades de interpretación.
Este DVD esta filmado en distintos ángulos con la posibilidad de apreciar y comprender mejor el material enseñado.
Tobias Roberson es un conocido percusionista y profesor de música especializado en ritmologia del Medio Oriente y los Balcanes. H a trabajado con FatChance Bellydance, Suhaila Salimpour, Habhi’Ru y Bellydance Superstars. Fue director musical de UltraGypsy y actualmente trabaja con la compañía de danza The Indigo.

I am looking for a certain Saida picture...

I saw this beautiful image of a belly dancer. She had beautiful long brown hair, a pretty red belly dance outfit, doing a little hair toss, and the background was amazing. So, I have been trying to find this said image for over a year. I don't remember how i came upon it. I had just googled belly dancer/dance/dancing etc and I was looking at the images. Today, I found out that it's an actual picture of Saida but I guess with some photoshop filters of some sort and add a nice background and it's the photo I'm looking for. Here is the link to the picture that is on a flyer, but it's super small. So, if you have it or now of where I can see it...lemme know. Thanks.

hair tossing and tribal

hey guys,

i've never seen tribal girls incorporate the hair toss and hair spinning moves into their floor work. i guess its bc in ATS the hair is usually wrapped in a turban and in tribal fusion you see a lot of heavy silver head gear making hair tosses impractical/impossible.

but i still think its a super exotic move and a signature of the iraqi/persian gulf/khaleeji area. I'd like to bring it into my dance but my hairs not long enough yet.

in this clip at 4:45, the dancer does the hair toss/spin i'm talking about

any thought on how this would look in tribal and whether its been done before?

I'm feeling a nagging itch to fly down to Argentina and enroll in Saida's school, but her website doesn't offer enough information about classes offered, teaching structure, or fees. I would really appreciate any knowledge about the school you can share. If there's a thread already covering this topic, much apologies. I searched around and didn't find it, though.

Why to study with Saida

Hello girls, I was thinking about posting WHY study with Saida.

reason 1: She is the best in Argentina and 1 of the best in the world (I assume this is personal because each of us have a different view and taste about belly dance).

reason 2: she explains so good, SO good...that u sooner or later end up doing everything she is teaching. All years at her school have an excelent level, not seen in any other big school here in ARgentina (I keep names because some may be offended...he!).

reason 3: she doesnt yell at u while explaining, isnt that an important reason...??! i´ve been throug hell while trying to learn...and u are paying for classes not for getting yelled!

reason 4: she is as cute in person as she is in pics. Is one of those cases where ppl are outside what they are inside.

reason 5: she has patience!

and so on :) the very best for me!
