In this immersion you will experience Jill’s technique drills, stylization, philosophies, musicality, improvisation, coaching for creating original combinations, as well as the importance of understanding classic belly dance and folkloric styles. This is a great opportunity to learn, grow, immerse, have fun, meet new people, expand your community, bond, and get to know Jill.

Who:
JILL PARKER is an international, award winning instructor, choreographer and director. Jill is the "Mama of the modern tribal fusion bellydance movement", an original member of Fat Chance Belly Dance, director of The San Francisco Foxglove Sweethearts, Ultra Gypsy, Djun Djun, and a frequent collaborator with Theater Flamenco. With 20 years of experience, she has trained many top dancers in the genre. Jill's big heart and deep love for this form shine through in her inspiring classes and intoxicating performances. She is an exceptional teacher with a knack for demystifying this sensuous dance making its techniques accessible to new dancers, while offering tremendous insight for refinement and breakthrough to advanced dancers. She has an amazing wealth of knowledge, is a warm teacher, has a very giving nature, and an easy to understand approach. Jill is exceptionally gifted in breaking down information for optimal learning, and great at honing in and giving you what you need to grow.

Why, yes! Yes you are!!!

I am one of the members of 4 Wench Productions and we produce an event called “Tribal Alchemy”. Now I know many of you think because of the word “tribal”, this event has nothing to offer to YOU. This would be incorrect.

What is Alchemy? By definition, alchemy is “ A medieval chemical philosophy having as its asserted aims the transmutation of base metals into gold, the discovery of the panacea, and the preparation of the elixir of longevity. “ How this translates to US is the mixture of different elements of dance and music to create something entirely new.

We offer affordable workshops, 36.00 each (which are approximately one week’s worth of fast food for most) and these workshops are instructed by some of the most sought after teachers around.

For the musicians, we have with us this year Mr. Dave Hall, who has toured with Solace Live and himself has been a drumming instructor for over 15 years. He has a vast knowledge base and much to offer.

For dancers who are not primarily of the “tribal” persuasion, one of our most requested an instructor (returning for a THIRD year) is Mira Betz. Her knowledge base is SO vast; it would fill this page to list every workshop topic she works with. She has taught workshops on Moroccan folkloric dance with us and this year is offering TWO very different workshops (one on improvisation skills and the other is all about the Taxeem!)

We have SOOZ, who is Fat Chance certified coming to share the ATS goodness. We have Theatrical bellydance, we have Belladonna bringing her unbelievable SWORD skills to teach. The list goes on and on!

The fact is, most bellydancers (no matter what style they fall into) use the same dance vocabulary. Our event offers the chance to learn some new ways to USE those moves, perhaps give you a FRESH view of your dance, and maybe turn you on to something you might not have previously been willing to try.

For 36.00 and a few short hours of your time, you can get a glimpse of something new and maybe start to figure out how some dancers “do that stuff”.

Most importantly, this event is NON PROFIT and benefits Safe Haven of Tarrant County. This center is a shelter and provides assistance for women and children who are affected by domestic violence. Silvia Salamanca is a life-long dancer from Mallorca, Spain. She started her career as a belly dancer in 2001, when realizing the enormous benefits that this art-form brings to women in both body and spirit (something that she felt truly missing in other dance practices). From her first teachers, Tasnim Melendres and the acclaimed Nur Banu, two natural born-Egyptians, she realized how with the practice of belly dance that women can get closer to their self identity and discover oneself in a new level, increasing self-esteem, releasing stress and getting deeply in touch with the feminine essence in their soul.

With her work in the field of Zambra Mora (Spanish gypsy-oriental dance fusion) Silvia has gained international recognition and is currently invited to teach workshops and perform in major festivals in Europe and across the USA, and will be part next November of the international Jury of the Contest for the Belly Dancer of the World hosted in Germany.

Silvia is also the co-director of Shunyata Belly Dance, the tribal-style company that captivates audiences at the Texas Renaissance Festival and has recently launched its first instructional DVD.

Passionate about teaching and performing, Angela Nations is a professional belly dancer with over 19 years of formal dance training. She studied the Erick Hawkins Modern Dance technique at Texas State University, in addition to jazz and ballet. She has over 9 years Middle Eastern dance experience in the Cabaret, ITS (Improvisational Tribal Style) and Tribal Fusion styles. She is currently an instructor, choreographer, and performer in Austin, TX and performs at workshops, faires, and events throughout Texas. Her expressive and fluid style, layered upon precise, controlled movements is a blend of various dance techniques combined with a dynamic presence that captivates and entertains.

Lauren Checchio attended the Ali Akbar College of Music in California, and has studied with some of the best percussionists in the world, including Swapan Chaudhuri, Zakir Hussain, Anindo Chatterjee, Glen Velez, and Ty Burhoe. Lauren traveled to the Middle East to study the art of the doumbek, and to Hawaii, to study tabla under Daniel Paul, one of the world’s few tabla tarang players.

Lauren is the director of percussion of the UT Middle Eastern Ensemble. She has played and recorded with 1001 Nights Orchestra, Oliver Rajamani, The Gypsies, Teye & Viva Flamenco, Govinda, Anita Jung, Ojala, among others, in Austin, TX. Lauren is also in demand as a teacher of percussion, giving both private lessons and group workshops.

Join Valori Jenne, an experienced yoga instructor, for a short ½ hour yoga warm up to prepare you for the rest of the day!

9:30 am – 12:30 pm: Tribal Belly Dance Meets Flamenco! with Silvia Salamanca
A gypsy Spanish twist to tribal movements and combinations. Combine the precision and sharpness of tribal with the fire of flamenco expression and you get a series of exciting steps, combinations and short routine to take home and leave everybody speechless! Emphasis will be put on posture, arms and spins. Bring a skirt and your best ole!

1:30 – 4:30 pm: Flamenco Style Skirt Dance with Angela Nations

Join us for a celebration of belly dance in all its forms (including cabaret and tribal) in this evening show from to be held in the grand ballroom at the Blue Bubble Ballroom. The first part of the evening (from 7:30 to 9:30) will include performances by belly dance solists and groups. Special guests will include the ladies of Shunyata Belly Dance (Silvia and Angela), and drummer Lauren Checchio.

Join Lauren in an exploration of drum rhythms, starting with basic drum rhythms and then expanding and building on basic rhythms. Both the beginner and experienced drummer will learn something from Lauren.

1:30 – 4:30: Hands, Hips and Spins, Elements of the Fire of the Spanish Gypsies with Silvia
In this workshop we will learn the art of the beautiful hands and arms from flamenco and how to combine it with your oriental dance to add spark to it. Plus, we will get you spinning like a passionate gitana too! Can we ask for more? Yes! A modern time routine based on this ancient art! Ole!

Vagabond Cirque- Call for Drummers and Musicians!

Woo hoo! We're doing it again this year! Vagabond Cirque will be on September 19, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. to midnight (or thereafter) at Avant Garden. Last year over 200 people attended this event to support HAWC.

This year, we will be raising money for Texas Children's Hospital to honor Caitlyn Bibeau, daughter of Bonnie and Brian Bibeau. Caitlyn passed away after only eleven hours after her birth due to a tumor almost 12-inches in size.

So we need to make this year even bigger and better than last year. And that means we need more MUSIC!
If you are a drummer or Middle Eastern/ East Indian/Jazz/ Vaudeville/ something else really awesome musician, please contact me either here on Tribe or at naribellydance@yahoo.com

We already have five musical acts, but with four areas offering some form of entertainment throughout the night, we need a few more. We would like musicians who are interested in performing at least two sets and can perform with dancers and/or alone.
We especially need drummers to play throughout the night and lead a drum jam at the end of the event.

You will receive a goodie bag, free food, acccess to a green room, and LOTS of exposure. The event is certain to be larger than it was last year and it is TONS of fun!

I hope to share the big top with some of you at this year's Vagabond Cirque!

About Low Lives ::
(Brooklyn, Miami, Houston)- Low Lives is a one-night exhibition of live performance-based works transmitted via the internet and projected in real time at three venues throughout the U.S.-- labotanica, Houston at Project Row Houses; FiveMyles, Brooklyn; and Diaspora Vibe Gallery, Miami. Low Lives examines works that explore the potential of performance practice presented live through online broadcasting networks. These networks, though seldom utilized for performance art, provide a new alternative and efficient medium for presenting and viewing performances.

Curated by Brooklyn-based artist and curator, Jorge Rojas, Low Lives embraces works with a lo-fi aesthetic such as low pixel image and sound quality, contributing to a raw, DIY and sometimes voyeuristic quality in the transmission and reception of the work. The artists and artist collectives participating in this exhibition will transmit their performances from countries including Argentina, Austria, Canada, England, France, Germany, Macedonia, Mexico, United States, Vietnam and Wales. Houston artists include Y. E. Torres (ms.YET) & Sandy Ewen.

“Low Lives is about not simply the presentation of performative gestures at a particular place and time but also about the transmission of these moments and what gets lost, conveyed, blurred, and reconfigured when utilizing this medium,” states Curator Jorge Rojas. Rojas, whose artwork has increasingly involved performative elements, proposed this exhibition to FiveMyles, Diaspora Vibe Gallery, and labotanica because of their commitment to experimental art and framing local and international art-making.

Join Shakra for an extensive dissection of high impact movement to discover empowerment through power moves. This workshop will also observe ways we lose physical and mental energy that affects endurance and performance. ~Stage flooring: 3/4" plywood raised on 1x4 slats. Covered by 1/8" tempered hardboard. (As soon as we get the seating configuration we will let you know of the stage area. Don't worry you will not have a little stage in the middle of the room as shown in the picture )
~Dressing rooms are availabe but please come prepared as much as possible because space is limited.
~No fire or animals are allowed in the show.

Join Shakra for an extensive dissection of high impact movement to discover empowerment through power moves. Using action-packed movements from specimens such as West African Dance, Bhangra, and their own Transfusion Style, Shakra will show you how to harness personal power and channel that energy to areas of the body where it is needed most. This workshop will also observe ways we lose physical and mental energy that affects endurance and performance. Be prepared to be worked from head to toe so bring Schmatorade (half water, half Gatorade) or your favorite thirst quencher.

Finger cymbals are an integral part of American Tribal Style bellydance, and can be a lovely accompaniment to a solo performance. However, many dancers often feel daunted by cymbal playing and have been using them less and less… Finger cymbals aren’t scary, and this workshop will help you approach cymbals as an instrument and as a way to enhance your performance. With the right exercises, anyone can play cymbals and dance! Asharah will lead you through an intense warm up, teach drills that layer movements and cymbal playing, introduce common cymbal patterns found in Middle Eastern music, and teach a short dance combination focusing on the playing of your cymbals with the music and your movements.

Tribal Alchemy is a NON PROFIT event that benefits SAFE HAVEN of TARRANT COUNTY. SafeHaven of Tarrant County is a non-profit organization created to help victims of domestic violence. They provide shelters, meal, clothing, education, counseling, medical and dental care and other services that really benefit the community. Last year Tribal Alchemy was able to give a van load of donations to SafeHaven along with some money. Thank you to all that donated! This year, their services have been taxed more than ever so lets show them how much we appreciate what they do for others!

~Ceiling height: 16' from floor to bottom of truss
~Stage flooring: 3/4" plywood raised on 1x4 slats. Covered by 1/8" tempered hardboard. (As soon as we get the seating configuration we will let you know of the stage area. Don't worry you will not have a little stage in the middle of the room as shown in the picture )
~Dressing rooms are availabe but please come prepared as much as possible because space is limited.
~No fire or animals are allowed in the show.
There are limited spaces so please send in your application as soon as possible

Sooooo, I'm living in San Antonio again, i finally feel at home again and settled in... but i'm going through shimmy withdrawals.
I have had the pleasure of meeting a few wonderfull dancers when i first arived in june, but events and haflas seem to be very few around san antonio, or maybe i'm just not well informed?

Well i'd like to meet some more of you lovely ladies and maybe stop by for a few of your classes...
After splitting with my troupe Neohips from the UK, it's taken me a while to feel ready to start a new one
but i'm ready again... but first i'd like to see how you guys shake it down here :)

BTW if anyone is going to the Suhaila workshops in austin let me know... i plan on going!

I work Friday-Sunday.
And Monday and Wednesday I'm at school from 1 to 7:40 p.m.
Those two days seem to be the popular days for belly dance lessons in San Antonio.
On Tuesday and Thursday I have class 5:30-6:45.

POINT BEING: I'm having a hard time finding classes that could fit into my schedule. (And that I can afford.)
I'm dying to learn tribal fusion.
Is there hope for me?

Hello to all you beautiful San Antonio artists and like minded people! My name is Nathan and my girl friend and I are on a journey driving around the country experiencing as much as possible. We just pulled in to San Antonio and will be here until the wind pulls us else where, lol! Anyways, we would love to meet with some people here and get to experience what I like to refer to as the 'extreme artist' community, aka: fire dancers, belly dancers, yogis, circus artists, drummers, ect. I personally am a fire dancer and a modern dancer and my girl friend Rachel is a singer, actress, dancer, and yoga instructor (just back from india!). So I hope to hear from some of you soon. I don't know when I'll be able to check into this tribe again but if you send me a personal message I'll hopefully get it before I leave town. I hope all goes beautifully well in your lives!

New Member Hello!!

Howdy all! I am thrilled to have found the informational motherload that is known as tribe.com!! I am a young winter Texas that was desperately looking for anyone or anything belly dance last winter. Fast forward to this winter and I'm getting closer! My husband and I decided to leave the corporate world and live in our RV full time. We are from Kansas so we spend our summers there working at a lake, where I am able to keep in touch and perform with fellow dancers. We head to Port Isabel the 2nd week of October and will be there until the second week of April. I am lucky enough to work at our RV park teaching aerobics, line dancing and even a belly dance workout to the other Winter Texans. I am really desperate to find some other dancers in the area (Brownsville, Harlingen) so that we can get together to dance and learn from each other. Thanks so much!!

Hello fellow fire fanatics!
This is an automated reply. Please join our tribe and stay tuned for updates on the upcoming NFPL Championship and tubing campout to be held Sept 26-28th on the beautiful Guadalupe River in New Braunfels ,Texas.

We are currently seeking DJs who may wish to promote themselves by providing music for the competition in exchange for the spotlight. We will need a link to review their music and their contact info. If you intend to use an independent DJ or band for your music, weather live or recorded, that may wish to be promoted and entered as an independent , there will be professional scouts attending the event who will be seeking musicians for future gigs. Pass the wordand help your musician friends get promoted!

We are also seeking judges for the duration of the event. If you or someone you know would be a good , unbiased, and fair judge,and may have expertise in performance art, martial arts, staging events, and especially the fire arts, let us know. We would like to receive a bio about them and why they would be a good judge. Entrants will be scored on technicality, form, costuming, stage presence, originality, musical accompaniment, and professionalism. Judges will not be allowed to perform in categories they will be judging.

Prices are $40 per person/per night and includes Membership to the NFPL for one year, entry into the championship, camping ,and tubing and shuttle service on the river. For Spectators, $30 per person/per night includes Membership to the NFPL for one year,camping ,and tubing and shuttle service on the river.Its gonna be a great time, so come out and enjoy what is sure to be a great time and great show.

For Championship entrants, there will be many male , female , pair, and troupe, categories to choose from, dependent on what fire tools you exhibit and number of performers in each routine. If you have a fire tool that is original or not listed , let us know and we will include it/them. If you use props such as structures or pyrotechnics, let us know the nature of these features and any space requirements.Please read our profile and be practicing your routines. You may enter as many categories as you wish.If you have your own music you wish to use in performance, please have it on CD or Ipod and ready to go. We will post entrant forms to bring with you to the show, so stay tuned!

Thank-you all for the amazing number of responses we have gotten. Space is limited to 2500 people at the event , so RSVP ASAP! We will try to answer all your questions in our updates. Tickets will be sold at the gate and it is recommended to let us know how many in your group , both performers and spectators, will be attending.

I just wanted to say thank you to each and every dancer that joined us at the Hafla at the Blue Bubble Ballroom on June 19th. Karen Barbee was amazing (but of course) and there were so many other beautiful dancers... it took my breath away. I think we had about 22 performances in all (and does that include the freestyles? because I saw a few faces from the crowd up there!!!) I am sure I speak for Sirocco when I say it was an incredible night, and it wouldn't have been possible without you, you, YOU!!! Who opened your hearts and performed with passion and grace. Hello All!
I'll be coming home to SA for about a month and was hoping to join in on a performance or hafla or possibly just meet some local troupes or dancers! I'm not sure if i'll be moving back here but if I am I would like to get to know some of you in the meantime! If there isn't anything going on, I'm thinking of possibly throwing my own hafla, it would be outdoors with a small stage area for performances! It would be a great opportunity to see what you all can do, just send me a message if you know of anything going on or are at all interested in a belly dance fiasco!

SATURDAY 10:00a WORKSHOP: "UNMATA au naturel"
This multi-level workshop will outline two tribal fusion combinations emphasizing technique and isolation. The first
combination will incorporate the building blocks of UNMATA's modern bellydance style. The second combination will focus primarily on the Hula Fusion nuance.Each movement will be outlined within a tribal cueing system so that it may be added to any troupe's choreography or tribal vocabulary. Amy will describe and drill each individual movement,then fasten them together into an accessible tribal combo that will be practiced in useful group and duet formations.
This workshop will be fun, fast, and furious. UNMATA believes in beat-your-butt technical practice, so bring water and come prepared to sweat.

This intense workshop focuses on fast! Amy's Art of Overlay is at the heart of this intermediate toadvanced bellydance workshop aimed to add expressive layers and distinction to your dance style. Although controlled simultaneous movement is a complex idea, this class provides a simple approach certain to bring impressive results.Beginning with a thorough breakdown of basic isolation technique, Amy will expand such elements as core strength and relaxed tension, and then demonstrate helpful exercises that are necessary to develop an awareness needed to isolate key muscle groups. Then she will teach and drill an isolation combo that incorporates the artistic flare unique to Amy Sigil and UNMATA.

Because this class is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer, a sufficient understanding of balance and timing is prerequisite.

hey all,
am coming down from michigan for a long and long time to stay in san an and was wondering what the dance scene has kickin down there.
i may be looking for some practice space at the very least, or learning or teaching opportunities if the spirit moves me.
anyone have the skinny?

i can tell there's not quite as much going on as in michigan just from the scant number of current posts, but i hope for the best.

I'm traveling to Florida and currently in San Antonio. On the way here I had a flat tire and had to call a tow tuck to repair and replace it – total cost took a huge bite of my travel budget since I was in the middle of 54 and a long ways off from any service station -- because of the unexpected expense I really need to sell some of my merchandise here in San Antonio instead of Florida.

I have beautiful matching faux fur skirts with bikini tops – I also have a beautiful pink & black satin outfit as well. These are hand made by a friend of mine. The outfits normally sell for $60 per outfit but I need the money so I am selling them for $40. The sizes are appx size 6 to size 9.

I also have a variety of re-constructed clothing ($10) and gently used clothing. Gently used clothing is only $10 (both normally $20 -- but again I really need the money for gas and food.

The Chandra Workshop KICKED ASS!!

What a great workshop!!!!

Talk about a fabulous time.....the studio was just beautiful, with brand new polished wood floors and TONS of space to move around. Chandra was amazing, of course.....she started us out with a short but effective warmup. I learned a few new stretches that I am already feeling the results of! Then we jumped right in to a complex choreography that was simplified enough for the beginner students to keep up with but challenging enough that those of us who have some dance experience were kept on our toes. It was slinky, playfully mischievious, and devilishly fun! A good time was had by all!

I had a great time doing henna designs for those that wanted.....I was in a swirly, fantastical mood and peacocks, swirls, and floral motifs did abound. Thank you everyone who provided a body-canvas.....I hope to be able to do this again, it was fun!

Many many thanks to Anaid and her troupe of hard workers and everone at Dancing the Rainbow dance studio for arranging the workshop and making it such a great day. For those that couldn't make it.......YOU GUYS MISSED OUT!! When another 'Mystique' workshop rolls around, you gotta go!!

Sooo glad I got to enjoy this experience and thrilled to have a choreography to take home,

Chandra, the director, was available to make it down here to promote her new "A Darker Groove" workshop this Summer, featuring new choreography and combos! I'm from there originally but I didn't start dancing until after my husband and I moved to East Texas. I've been dancing for about 9 months and we're going to be moving back to SA by the end of the year, so I'm looking for a school to continue dancing with at a beginner/intermedite level. Thanks!!
