Anyone been to this spot on the Lower Haight? (www.uvaenoteca.com/)
I've been curious about it, but also scared... seems like a weird addition to the dive bars and quirky shops in this area.

Re: Uvo Enoteca
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 7:18 PMI went last week. Really good food that's very wine-centric. The wine list is really unique and quite good. The server we had made sure we were able to try the wines before committing to them. This is a good thing, as the list is full of quirky wines that I'm not particularly familiar with.
The price is certainly steep, but it's a pretty fun wine bar with good food. I really like the fact that they serve wine by the quartino, which means you can try a few different wines even if you're in a small group. The food menu can be equally as daunting as they have a wide selection of cured meats and cheeses, but most of it is pretty good and they've been carefully selected.
It gets pretty crowded pretty early right now. Not sure if that's going to change as the shine of a new place in the neighborhood fades, but be prepared to wait quite a while if you don't arrive earlier or later than normal dining hours. Also, the noise level is pretty high due to the current popularity of the place.
All in all, a great addition to the area. The only good food late at night prior to Uva was Nopa. While Nopa is great, it's certainly good to have options. Not sure how often I'll be going to Uva, but it's definitely worth checking out.

Re: Uvo Enoteca
Wed, May 21, 2008 - 8:10 AMOk, so I went last night and wasn't very impressed.
The wine was the exception to that - the 8oz carafes are great for sharing and allow you to try a bunch of different things. The self-described "wine guy" made excellent recommendations. Our waitress was also great.
However, the portion sizes are ridiculously small, though reasonable priced for the size. While everything was tasty, when did 1 piece of bruchette become an acceptable serving size? The "red carrots and apples" were literally, 2 baby carrots sliced in half with the equivalent of one quarter of a small apple grated on top. It was such a small serving it looked laughable on the plate. Again, tasty and only $4, but it just seemed so silly!
The bread is not good at all - dry, room temperature, bland. And they only give you two pieces at a time - we had 5 different cheeses sitting in front of us, most of them soft, with nothing to put it on. We had to repeatedly request bread, even though I didn't really want to eat it. The cheese condiments (balsamic cherries, truffled honey, and pear and black pepper compote) were all fantastic and went a long way to saving the bread. I am a bit of a cheese snob, though, and didn't especially care for the selection. If you like Italian cheeses, you'll love it, but I prefer harder, aged cheeses and milder creamy ones, so it wasn't my favourite cheese plate. (For the record, Cav hass the best cheese selection in my book.)
The strawberry sorbet was delicious, but I paid an extra $4 for some fancy balsamic drizzled on top, which works out to be about $1 a drop. It just seemed like a very small serving of balsamic compared to what I paid for.
All in all, everything was tasty, but just seemed overpriced for what we received... I probably won't be going back other than to sip wine at the bar...
