My first cup of tea - nausea and stomach ache

Last night, after 10 days of dieting and 20 hours of fasting on water and fruits, I decided to drink some of the Pachanoi tea for a test.
I smudged the space with white sage and put on some Huachuma music.
Having heard 30 g would be a good serving, I only poured 18 g into a cup, in case it turned out stronger than expected.
I drank half of it with the intention to drink the other half 1-2h later.

The taste wasn't too bad, it was much better than Caapi. However, I washed down the aftertaste with some chocolate milkshake, which apparently was a very bad idea. I could really have gone without it.

An hour later nausea set in, which lasted 5-6 hours. Eating an apple (which, BTW, took a lot of will to get to) alleviated the nausea greatly, but my stomach still ached for another 6 hours. Needless to say, I never drank the other half. I spent most of the time lying down in bed, as even sitting up was too hard a task.

I wonder if it's normal with the cactus, or is the milkshake to blame?

  • Dzikus man, I mean, 10 days of dietine, 20 hours of fasting, and then you put a chocolate milkshake in your stomach? Come on buddy, you know better than that. The medicine tastes how it tastes, let it stay in your mouth tasting that way. End of story. And drink the entire glass at once, don't wait. Or else all you'll get is nausea (especially with the milkshake there, I mean, come on dude!?!?!)

Seriously though, next time drink the whole glass, and another half a glass just to be sure. Don't wait, and don't put in something so crazy heavy into your stomach right after. Hell, don't consume anything for at least the next 8 to 10 hours would be my opinion. And then something light. Maybe just a little water throughout the process.

But yes, small doses will only produce the physical symptoms with none of the reasons why we drink medicine in the first place.

Now you know, next time, drink up, and stay pure, especially after 10 days of dieta and 20 hours fasting. Even if you're not drinking Huachuma a chocolate milkshake is an insane way to come off of a fast.....

    :)
    • Thanks Jav, that dispels my doubts. The milkshake was not much, but yes, it's heavy stuff. The apple was a blessing though.
Next time I'll stay pure :)

really honestly you dont need to fast, and deit with sanpedro... they dont do that traditionally... so why should you?
ive seen don caldrone drink beer while preparing sanpedro and then drink it after dinner...
its strong stuff that will bring out toxins and make ya puke end of story thats what it does, and you need to get used to that, and not only used to that but love it... purging is cleansing and its not the sanpedro thats making you sick its all the shit in you the sanpedro is drawing out...
you have to be strong to be able to deal with that... not weakened by fasting and deiting... thats a different path... not the path that sanpedro requires you to walk...
sanpedro is harsh stuff to put in your tummy after fasting and deiting for a long time... let alone an apple and a milkshake...
you dont have to do the dieta with sanpedro.. ayahuasca and sanpedro are different paths completely...
what is the purpose of fasting and deiting any way? why do some traditions do it with ayahuasca and others dont? the clearestad most amazing aya session i ever had was some home job eaten with sourdough bread which kicked it in...
ends up that the gall bladder has something to do with digesting and your bodies assimilation of the tryptamines and a little food will kick in a dud brew... who knew... well we did and from that point on we ate sough dough bread every time and it made our stomaches hurt less too...

eat light and eat foods you dont mind vomiting up. thats my advice. thats what actually works. you need your strength... if you want to make your body and mind weak so that the entheogen of choice can have a totally destablizing ego death inducing effect ok then fast diet and take a bunch... that'll do it...

but really i would have just drank it... mescaline is pretty safe... so is sanpedro... you can take alot and your going to be just fine.
        • 'really honestly you dont need to fast, and deit with sanpedro... they dont do that traditionally... so why should you?'

I think this is good advice although I usually do fast for a day before taking medicine and avoid certain foods (sugar, meat, oily things). But that has to do with my particular relationship with the plant and not traditional, that's true. When I do ceremony with others I often purge for others. I can't explain it. It' s just part of the job for me. So that's the real reason i prefer to fast. Just makes the whole evening easier a bit for me. If i'm working with the medicine alone fasting often isn't necessary--except for the ban on sugar.

thats interesting you purge for others...
do you find you absorb others sickness quite a bit as well?
for me not eating 4 hours before i take medicine is great. all i need really.
i dont often follow alot of the abstinence rules from other traditions... but then again i am a contrary...
            • well yeah...takin' out the trash, I guess. and it's funny you ask because yes, I do find that I absorb others' sicknesses. I've always been very empathic and this has gone to a whole new level of subtlety this last year. It caught me off guard the first time it happened and I was sick for two weeks. I'm now learning to do a better job holding space for myself!

'but then again i am a contrary...' you keep right on being contrary brother!!
              • Hey Cynthia, this one woman I usually drink with in Aya ceremonies has that same knack for purging for other people. It's pretty crazy to see really, if I want to purge on my own I usually talk to her about it (no words) and I purge, but she'll end up cleansing and absorbing for everyone in the room who's not ready to do their own work per se.....it's a really beautiful attribute really.....
                • Unsu...

my fiance has the nack for that... so do i as well... but i can work with it so that within t he process of healing. i can suck it out of you draw it out of you but we deal with it together... i dont do it for them... but in one sanpedro ceremony i worked with some florida water a amazonian man had put an icaro in and it drew it to my throat and i would absorb it and purge it out when i went past some peoples prayerr banners... it was interesting. the icaro had really made the florida water a magnet for it.

my fiance has had this issue of being very sensitive to others sicknesses... especially brujeria. i told her today shes kinda like a kuy in that way, today she woke up with pain in her eyes... and then when we went to another shamans house that was having problems and may have put brujeria on some one she got belly sick pretty bad... when we got home i gave her my protection from mal ojo and did some work on her with some "anti" brujeria things i got on the mesa, and it all went away... the first time this happened was because of the same person haveing brujeria against her and she absorbed it as well... she got mal aire and i used palo santo on her and it went away like that. shes super receptive to spiritual energy. i thought today that she really needs to build up her defences. and i would say cynthia that that would be a good idea for you as well... you pick up the wrong thing at the wrong time and you could get terribly ill. but im sure you know that and have a good arcana.

but at any rate the purge from sanpedro is a good thing a very good thing... and if you try to resist it and hold it back to keep from vomiting, then you are doing your self and the medicine a great disservice. because your just holding on to your sickness. it just really important to realize that its not the sanpedro making you feel nauseaus of giving you a stomach ache its the things inside of you that are harming you that the sanpedro is removing that is making you sick... its a really important thing to see...
if you dont need to purge and your system is fine then the sanpedro will not make you feel sick to your stomach at all. its how it works.
                  • This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.

good advice llb, thanks, i do know but apparently I need to be reminded often! And tell your fiancee, I commiserate about the brujería business. I am hypersensitive to it as well. I took a trip to Huancabamba with my man a couple of months ago. I never experienced a blatant energetic attack like I experienced while there. I thought I was imagining it but knew enough to treat is as real (and, among other things, promptly filled our hotel room with palo santo smoke--great stuff palo santo!) Shortly afterwards a curandero friend who traveled with us returned from dinner and came to find me because he suddenly had become concerned about me. I thought I was alright but sure enough the next day I started to get sick. I wasn't having any of it and somehow managed to kick it out of me by the next day. I told Mick the next time he wants to go on a 'bruja vacation' he'd have to go alone--lol!!

I am wearing a piece of blue kyanite crystal these days. A great protector that doesn't absorb energy, and doesn't need to be cleared. It acts sort of like the smudge fan of crystals. It seems to be helping.

yeah sounds like you might have gotten caught in some cross fire... sounds like you beat it though thats good...
i have LOTS of protection... shit working in a psyche ward you fucking need it...
SPEAKING OF WHICH!!! OMG!!! my boss came up to me the other day a christian woman that wouldnt let me read a book on the religious history of paganism at work, while bibles were all over the place... pulled me aside and asked me if my HUAYRURO beads were religious and i said yes not wanting to explain my take on all that too her and she said i couldnt wear them to work or allow them to be showing.
                      talk about inauspicious omens!
good god, i kinda feel that thats against my religious rights and i need to fight it.
they make me feel pretty damn safe though... so does my ruda and well damn ive got quite the collection of things that protect me from other peoples crap, mostly because i am around it all day long... just crazy toxic spiritual energy... yikes...

Spiritual and Healing Properties of Kyanite:
                      Meditation Stone
Kyanite will help you understand lesson as they appear in your life and to be better able to learn from your teachers, human, animal, mineral, bird, plant, insect, fish, or spirit. This stone can be used to help you connect to these teachers, one way is by placing it on your forehead as you meditate or putting at the head of your bead as you sleep or my favorite sticking it inside of your pillow case on the down side as you sleep above it.

                      Aligns Throat Chakra
Kyanite aids in creative expressions such as art, dance, writing, etc. It strengthens the truth in a person and makes one more reliable. It brings to one serenity. Kyanite is wonderful when used as a shield. It does not retain negative vibes and they bounce off. A good stone for aligning all of the energy centers but is particularly good for the 5th chakra or throat chakra. It is a powerful stone to access the Universal Energy during healing. Blue (color) relates to your spiritual side. It helps you to attune while searching for inner peace.

this stone sounds great sounds just perfect for her... she thinks she needs some florite as well which i think is a good idea.
i have an arcana of florite.
                      • '...asked me if my HUAYRURO beads were religious and i said yes not wanting to explain my take on all that too her and she said i couldnt wear them to work or allow them to be showing. '

good grief that is inauspicious, however I'm guessing if anyone can turn that one around into something positive it's you.

Ruda--yeah really wonderful plant. nice info on kyanite. It really is an intense and powerful stone, and balances one's energy almost immediately. I do feel quite protected when I wear mine--which is almost everyday now. It would be a lovely gift for your fiancee. Fluorite is another good one--helps in making order from chaos.

Black tourmaline and pyrite are also great protective crystals.
                • That's interesting Jav. I've had similar experiences with people although it often works in 'reverse' for me. I'll know who is about to purge before they do or who needs to and can't. You know I have been able to come to see this as beautiful attribute, and i'm glad to be able to be of service...not very glamorous perhaps but then taking out the trash often isn't!
        • > what is the purpose of fasting and deiting any way?

I do that with all medicines and had presumed it wouldn't hurt with San Pedro.

          > the clearestad most amazing aya session i ever had was some home job eaten with sourdough bread which kicked it in...

That's another story. It is well known that food, especially fat, facilitates the absorption of Aya. People usually eat a bit of buttered bread, cream, yogurt or an apple wedge after Aya to bring on the visions, and that's not considered breaking the fast or dieta. It's just another step of the ceremony.

I know the cactus won't hurt me if I drink too much, and they say it's quite forgiving. But it never hurts to approach a new ally with caution.

I attended a Huachuma ceremony last July that was led by a man who has a very good reputation for being trained in authentic Northern Coast curanderismo, and no one in the group purged. I didn't even experience any nausea, even though the brew was quite potent. To be honest, I wasn't even aware that purging was an expected outcome of working with San Pedro...
          • Purging isn't necessarily an expected outcome of working with SP, but the medicine always gives you what you need. Some people tend to feel nausea for a brief period of time shortly after they ingest and that's the end of it. That's how it was for me at first. But as my relationship with the SP deepened, I was working alone one night and suddenly, several hours after taking the medicine, I found myself on all fours and heard my inner voice saying 'relax, surrender to it, you're receiving a very deep healing so let it happen, try not to resist.' Somehow I did. What happened after that was that I was able to receive some very profound teaching from the maestro. And right after that I began to purge for others when in ceremony. Not a gift I would have ever asked for but often those unasked for gifts are the best ones.

I'm late coming in on this discussion, but would like to chime in on personal perspectives involving the pedro experience.and nausea. While I have read up on some of the traditional uses of pedro, my comments come from almost totally my personal experience. To me, if there is no nausea or purge, the cactus does not come to me. I have never used ayahuasca and can not speak for it, but just about every experience I have read on the purging effect for aya is very, very similar to what I get from the cactus. Fasting for the day of the journy is essential. Too much bad food will just make the journey rough. I have unwittingly trained myself to dispise the taste of the tea, so I use the beloved resin balls. These go down OK, but about three hours later, the shaking starts and shortly after, so does the vomiting which can go for a couple of hours. Because time becomes so distorted, it has been hard to explain it in a conventional timeline. Perhaps it is because I am a person of conflict, but the sickness and shaking seem to be a process that eventually shakes the impurities out and than results in a balance. The greatest visions come about the same moments of the nausea. Any spirits that are contacted are usually at that time as well. So as hard as it seems, the nausea can be an essential part of the experience!
