WORKSHOP 1: "Introduction to the Hoop Path":
WHEN/WHERE: Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13th. From 1-4pm both days at The Santa Cruz Dance Company, 2800 Porter Street, Soquel, CA 95073

This two-part workshop will introduce you to the physical challenge and meditative bliss of hoopdance: the energetic flow art of dancing with the sacred circle, the hoop. Hooping can be an exercise, a dance, a meditation. On the Hoop Path, we approach our hoop Practice with shared intentions not only to improve our hooping skill, but also to develop the skills to go Within, as we believe that Inner and Outer strength are inextricably and intimately intertwined. The introductory workshop will be divided into two sections, both taught by master teacher and Hoop Path founder Jonathan Baxter. Together we will focus on building core hooping skills, introducing students to Hoop Path terms such as pe*A*ce, Ritmo, One Tree/Two Tree Hooping, and Two Birds. Depending on where we find our rhythm as a group, we may well get into some of the more physically challenging techniques like Reversing, Breaking, Paddling, Lifts, and Angle Hooping .

WORKSHOP 2: "The Hoop Path Intensive":

WHEN/WHERE: 6:30pm-8:30pm, MONDAY, APRIL 14 The Santa Cruz Dance Company, 2800 Porter Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95073

This workshop is designed for seasoned hoopers who seek to deepen their personal Hoop Practice. We will move into some of the more complex aspects of Hooping, which will definitely include challenges to the Body, but also to the Mind and Spirit. Off-body techniques that require additional concentration, such as Rolling, Point, and Samurai, will be explored, as well as core exercises designed to help you discover reservoirs of Strength you might as yet be unaware of.

Aren't familiar with The Hoop Path yet? Check out this youtube of Baxter and the Hoop Path DVD Trailer.

THE HOOP PATH BIO
Jonathan Baxter picked up a hoop for the first time six years ago, thinking it would help him rehabilitate some injured shoulder muscles. He never dreamed it would develop into a daily meditation that totally transformed him, inside and out. Over the years he has logged in thousands and thousands of hooping hours--what we on the HoopPath call "flight time." Baxter's commitment to his Practice has revealed to him many of the profound subtleties to be found this ecstatic movement. This extensive and direct involvement with "hoopgnosis," coupled with Baxter's unique gifts as a storyteller and guide, make him an extraordinary teacher.

Baxter's longtime student and partner, Ann Humphreys, demonstrates and assists in HoopPath workshops. Ann attended her first HoopPath class in the summer of '05 and became a committed hooper a year later. An insatiable and eager student, she rapidly absorbed the HoopPath teachings and quickly developed her own distinctive hoopstyle. She brings eight years of yoga experience, as well as high energy and an infectious enthusiasm, to HoopPath classes.
Watch Ann Hooping on youtube
Ann Hooping

Bax's course, The Hoop Path, equally emphasizes both the spiritual and the technical dimensions of hoopdance. Through personal story and myth, Baxter deepens the student's metaphorical and physical understanding of a wide variety of hoop moves and dynamics. His connection to his students is genuine and distinctive--as much as help you become skilled and graceful hooper, Bax wants to help you connect to your inner rhythm, and know yourself from that place.

Registration Links to HoopPath Workshops in California 4/12-4/21

Howdy!

We've finally got these registration links a-goin' for all our California workshops next month. We will present the following workshops:

Saturday April 12th and Sunday April 13th: HoopPath Santa Cruz
Monday April 14th: HoopPath Intensive, Santa Cruz
Wednesday April 16th: HoopPath LA
Thursday April 17th: HoopPath Ojai
Saturday April 19th and Sunday April 20th: HoopPath San Francisco
Monday April 21st: HoopPath Intensive, San Francisco

Things to bear in mind: All of the workshops except for the two intensives are suitable for hoopers of ANY SKILL LEVEL, total beginners and hoop professionals alike. Because the HoopPath is a unique approach with its own language and specific imagery that we share and learn from together, even a highly advanced hooper will need to become familiar with our terms and concepts to be able to fully benefit from the exercises.

The workshops will all be quite rigorous. You will need to pace yourself, particularly if you are a beginning hooper, and please remember to bring some water to stay refreshed and hydrated. We do a lot of talkin', but we do a LOT of hoopin' too!

Finally, in Santa Cruz and San Francisco, the Saturday-Sunday workshops are a prerequisite for the Monday intensives.

Even though I seem to have gotten caught in some kind of yokel persona above (yee-haw!) I can still answer any of your questions if you write to me here or at ann@hooppath.com

Here's the links! All of 'em!

Howdy happy hoopers!

How ya feeling today? So over in the hooping videos tribe we had a discussion about vimeo - a video sharing site. http://tribes.tribe.net/hoopingvideos/thread/48766ad5-4396-469a-8f72-1a038a5374f7

It's a wonderful site. So I've created a new channel on vimeo for hooping videos. Right now I'll be moderating if but if anyone wants to moderate it just let me know! Hoop hoop away!

www.vimeo.com/channel6649

So if you want your hooping video on the channel you can add a link in the "Shout Out" box on the right hand side of the page.

Hooray! I can't wait to see all the crazy fun hooping videos to come!

1-love,

I typically hoop up here in SF with the bay area hoopers on Sundays, but work is taking me down to Monterey for the next two Sundays, fingers crossed for sun as I would love some fresh air hooping and meeting new folks.

Santa Cruz Last Night DIY Celebration Returns for the Third Year

Come express yourself and join the fun in Downtown Santa Cruz for a New Year’s Eve parade and street party crammed with jugglers, fire dancers, samba drums, pirates, freak bikes, art cars, marching bands, do-it-yourself art projects and lots of music. All your favorite local performers will be there - will you?

Last Night DIY is a spontaneous people’s parade, a do-it-yourself celebration organized at a grassroots level. This family-friendly, all ages, all-inclusive event will take place on New Year’s Eve starting at sunset (around 5pm) behind the Saturn Cafe. The parade will march down Pacific Avenue, followed by a rollicking party in the street as we celebrate the New Year together.

To learn more about it, add your own creative ideas, or help un-organize this year’s parade and street party, visit the Last Night DIY website at www.lastnightdiy.org.

There are no spectators-only participants!

spin jam - Fri Sept 28 7-9PM - UCSC east field house

I have made a reservation for use of the big beautiful dance studio at UCSC's East Field House Friday, Sept 28 7-9 PM. It costs $5 for the general public to officially enter the field house, $3 for alumni and UCSC students are free. The dance studio is on the upper level near the parking lot and features a full length mirror and wood floors. There is an entrance there (for students with id cards), and the dance studio is adjacent to it, but you can pay for entrance only at the main entrance by the swimming pool and then walk back over. All are welcome for poi, staff and hoop but staves need to have ends padded so not to damage the wood floors. Anyone want to bring a sound system?

Hope to see you there and if this works out, I might try a few more spin jams. The reservation is tentative as we could get bumped out but it doesn't seem likely this time around. By the way, once you are in, you have access to all facilities including pool and gym if that is of any interest to anyone.

I would if I had mastered any real tricks yet. This might be a fun way to get this group going. Any volunteers?? Much Love!

Join us at Santa Cruz lighthouse Sundays starting about 6:30-7:00 PM for ongoing hoop jams. This week some folks say they're bringing psi hoops for a little night time fun. I might bring my fire hoop (which I make and sell through Renegade Juggling) and light up at dusk for some practice transitioning my regular dance hoop moves into the blazing kind. Check in and find out about our next beach bonfire/fire performer gathering. Hope to see you there...

July 18, 8:30 PM - Meet at the Santa Cruz Harbor beach in front of Crow's Nest restaurant between the Hobie cats and the water near the east jetty. We will be fire hooping and have a small campfire in a fire pan. Join us for some fun. No glass (our only rule to use the beach) but beverages and items to share are great. Bring a beach chair or blanket. Poi and staff are also welcome.

Let's form a hoop dance community in Santa Cruz

I know you're all out there spinning hoops in various places around in our local Santa Cruz area - it's time to come out and introduce yourself to the community! Once we get this tribe going, we can get classes and workshops going, make meeting times and have fun together.

So let's get on to the introductions, I'll go first:
I'm Blaze and I am like a kid who has just discovered a new passion with these larger and heavier circus hoops. Right now I am a sponge who wants to learn all, do all and of course share what I know with you. Building on my experience building props for over twenty years as a co-founder of Renegade Juggling, I build my own circus hoops and experiment with different sizes, weights and decoration styles. I can see us getting together and having fun sharing moves, having hoop building parties, and inviting workshop leaders to come and teach us stuff and sell us their professional quality hoops.

So let's come out, join and post an introduction of yourself to this tribe, make ourselves known to each other, and build our local hoop dance community. I'm excited, and I hope you are too!

Hey guys,

I thought it may be helpful to open a "where and when" thread for Santa Cruz hoopers. Basicially, if you are planning on hooping at a certain place and time, you can post it here and hope for other hoopers to join in. i'll start off:

Today (Tuesday, 6/26/07) I will be hooping in Laurel Park (on Laurel, just behing the Nelson Center) at 4:30 or so. I'm working on a hoop headstand, so watch for the flying disc :)

Congratulations to the winners of the HoopGirl Hot Moves contest! This was our way of giving some love back to the community for sharing all your beautiful inspiration. So thank you! Since there were only 4 applicants, everyone won something!!!

While all the entries were wonderful, I really felt called to award Sharna first place because of the unusual creativity of her moves. Beautiful!!! And Erica was a close contender, not only for the beauty and diversity of all her moves, but because of her fun and thoughtful presentation style. Congratulations everyone!

FIRST PLACE WINNER: Sharna Rose. Awarded a FREE Teacher Training valued at $700
SECOND PLACE WINNER: Erica Edelman. A $50 gift certificate for redeemable in the HoopGirl online store
THIRD PLACE WINNER: Natasha Young A copy of HoopDance for Beginners Instructional DVD, by HoopGirl

So Erica, You got the super duper prize of both a gift certificate AND a free teacher training! Instead, Sharna has agreed to recieve a complete outfit from the upcoming HoopGirl clothing line, available in April.

Winners, contact Annie at HoopGirl HQ for info on recieving your award! 415-661-4667

Watch the entries here!

FIRST PLACE: SHARNA ROSE
Please find attached my enteries to the Hot Hoop Move contest. I had big problems uploading my my footage (youtube mashed its quality so I had to send dv quality images - they took nearly an hour for 20 seconds worth of film - this is why the clips are so short.) So I apologise for the unglamourous way that I have presented the films - I hope you can see the moves enough to get the general idea.

Move 1. Flipper (A Reversal) - Start this move from hooping around the knees. Can be done either side but for the purposes of the demonstration I have done it clockwise. You will need to remove your right leg from the hoop when the gap occurs (if you were doing a kick out you would move the other leg) and then you use the foot to reverse the hoop using the knee as a pivot. Reverse the instructions to do this the other way - Its really hard either way and I cant always get it - the music has to be just right - or I don't practice it enough.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ym_P8__DRq0

Move 2. Back around the Summit - Start this move standing upright and lean forward as if you were going to take the hoop behind your back and pop in. If you take the hoop with your left hand then as you come around the right side of your body you need to put your right elbow up and into the hoop, using your body as a pivot push with this elbow and pull back with the left hand. Reverse the instructions for the other side.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ekDuhjQQEE

Move 3. Jack in the Box - Start this move by doing a Reversed Summit. In this clip I start by taking the hoop around my back with my left hand - Instead of reversing the move with the elbow behind the back pop back into the hoop and use your right hand to swing the hoop onto your body (tip - use your left hand to stall the hoop and help with momentum when reversing and turn the direction the hoop is now going in). I find it more difficult to go the other way. You reverse the instructions but somehow my body gets in the way - I think more practice is required by me or it needs more swing.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ7fVdbGQVU

Move 4. Back Heel Flick - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop infront and behind the body horizontally at about knee hight. On passing the hoop in front of the body with left hand use the right heel to scoop the hoop behind and up as high as you can behind your back - use your left hand to push the hoop back on your body as you pop back in. This only works this way because if you reverse the instructions the hoop is passed infront of the body.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSlfQeLDsYw

Move 5. Wind up - Start by standing upright, hooping clockwise, and pass the hoop around the body horizontally in front and behind you. As the hoop comes back around your left side to the front, place your right foot on the far of the hoop and push the hoop around so that it comes over your right side, over your head and release your left foot (you can either hold the hoop with both hands or just your right). Twist the hoop over your body again using right hand and jump out backward from the hoop - take the hoop back around to the right behind you, using right hand, and pop in. Turn. Reverse the instructions for going the other way.

SECOND PLACE: Erica Edelman
YouTube Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P90mutX0tUg
Moves:
Move 1: Celeste / Luna
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: This is a fun move that even brand new hoopers can do. The challenge is keeping your balance at the end without hopping, but if you only do a half-turn, then it is much easier (but less fun!) I asked my beginner students to name it, and they came up with either Celeste or Luna, because the end pose looks like those pictures of a lady in the moon.

Move 2: Fun Start
Difficulty: Beginner
Notes: Both this move and the previous move can be done by brand new hoopers. I was trying to figure out the "circus start" move (which I can't do) when I stumbled upon this little gem. Newbie Hoopers love it, because it is a fun and easy way to start hooping, instead of just pushing it around the waist.

Move 3: One Shoulder Duckout from Waist Hooping
Difficulty: High Intermediate
Notes: For a while I was exploring with One Shoulder Duckout variations. I put this move on a video on my website showing those variations but no one ever seemed to pick it, or the other variations, up. This one is pretty fun, but not too pretty. I generally don't do it in performances, because it does not have a high enough success ratio. (i.e. it ocassionally goes flying)

Move 4: Isolation with Turn
Difficulty: Advanced
Notes: This is a new one for me. Lots of hoopers do isolations, but I don't think I have ever seen any add a turn to it. It is difficult, but definitely do-able for anyone who already has a one-handed isolation down.

Move 5: "Not the Matrix"
Difficulty: High Advanced
The base of this move is from last year for me, but the end of it is new. It starts out going from a left shoulder duck-out to a right shoulder duck-out WITHOUT putting your head in the hoop. Now, the new part for me: THEN it goes in front of you (without your head inside, again) to a left arm duck-out. If I can get that last piece to a left SHOULDER duck-out, then I can make the move continous.

SECOND PLACE: JESSICA SPARKS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ScregYQ55to
The move: SCISSOR SWITCH
accomplished by stepping out of the hoop while hooping on your knees, and using your outside knee to change currents/directions.

THIRD PLACE: NATASHA YOUNG
I call this move the spin cycle. It's swish into a toss with a spin.
My sister used to do this move when she was a baton twirler. A lot of
off body hoopdancing is similar to baton (warrior, for example) so I
thought I would give this trick a try. It's called a one spin in
baton, but I've seen them do three spins and four spins! What I
learned from watching the baton twirlers are the following:
(1) the higher you toss, the more time you have to spin around before
catching the hoop
(2) you need to throw the hoop as straight up into the air as possible
(3) always spot the hoop so that you are always aware of where it is

Hello Hoop-Friends!

I live in Los Gatos and am looking for other hoopers. I just started hooping about 2 months ago and am TOTALLY addicted! So much that I'm now teaching a regular hooping class at Courtside Club, and doing a beginning workshop at Yoga Center Los Gatos on June 17th. I'd love to PLAY with anyone who wants to!

Peace and Light,
Yelapa workshop

Here's the update...

A few non-tribe folks have been causally gathering at a new club downtown called E3 that, although small, is hooper friendly (management even providing a few hoops). A small group of us has been coming down on Mondays for a reconfiguation of a former SC band called Special Fun now known as Soul Circle that is still performing to small audiences (so there's actually room to hoop). The band I believe is going to be doing every other Monday for a while longer and while crowds remain small, it's a hoopable space. Anyways, we're all pretty dedicated hoopers (there's four of us) who look likely to hop on board Christebel and Alison's Yelapa, Mexico hooping in paradise workshop. If anyone else is interested, the deadline is approaching so here's the skinny on the workshop which sounds pretty fun to me:

Join Christabel at a Beachside Hooping Paradise!

The registration deadline is almost here!!! January 17-21. Join HoopGirl™ and guest Nia instructor, Alison Weeks, for a retreat on the beautiful coast of Jalisco, Mexico! enjoy a long weekend of sun, sand, hooping, dance and fun! Flying into Puerto Vallarta, we will take an exhilarating boat ride to magical Yelapa.Day times will have time to hike, snorkel, swim in the ocean, or sit in a hammock and chill. $695 includes two hoop classes daily, spontaneous hoop jams, lodging at an eco-resort with the largest waterfall in the Americas, and three healthy meals a day prepared by a local chef. The resort has 4 lush acres bursting with topical flowers and fruits...space is very limited! To register, email Alison immediately for more information: alison_weeks@yahoo.com.

What kind of hooping?

Well, I see this is a small group so far, but I'm positive it's gonna grow. Anyway, I thought I'd just throw this out there, see if anyone wants to play along...

What kind of hooper are you? (Not that I'm asking you to label yourself or place yourself in a little box...not where I'm going with this)

I just started hooping this past summer at Bonnaroo (music festival in TN) and can't get enough. So basically, I'm just a recreational hooper but I love, love, love it and I'm eager to learn more and more.

How to get/make a hoop in Santa Cruz

I thought I'd post what I know about buying a hoop or getting hoop making supplies in our area.

I have some for sale at my business, Renegade Juggling. You can stop by and choose from what we have there - call first 831-426-7343 and make an appointment. We also have a DVD on beginning hooping. There are also many online vendors including us: www.renegadejuggling.com. See http://www.hooping.org for a listing other vendors.

Alternately, to make your own, here's where you get the poly tubing:
3/4 inch tubing - use 160 psi tubing available at Scotts Valley Sprinkler and Pipe. Spools only.
1 inch tubing - use 100 psi tubing available at San Lorenzo Lumber. Sometimes spools only sometimes not - look in the yard for cut lengths. You can also get 100 psi 3/4 inch tubing there (but I think it make a hoop too lightweight).
Both place have the straight couplings you'll need to join the tubing.

Next you'll need tapes - mail order from: http://www.identi-tape.com

For instructions and other supplies go to: http://www.hooping.org

Here's a link to hoop making step by step instructions:
http://www.jasonunbound.com/hoops.html

Good luck and please introduce yourself on this tribe under the post, 'lets form a hoop dance community in santa cruz', especially if you're a local to our area.
